A 6Li−13C REDOR Study of the TMEDA Complex of Solid Fluorenyllithium

Phase-modulated LA-REDOR: a robust, accurate and efficient solid-state NMR technique for distance measurements between a spin-1/2 and a quadrupole spin

Distances between a spin-1/2 and a spin>1/2 can be efficiently measured by a variety of magic-angle spinning solid state NMR methods such as Rotational Echo Adiabatic Passage Double Resonance (REAPDOR), Low-Alpha/Low-Amplitude REDOR (LA-REDOR) and Rotational-Echo Saturation-Pulse Double-Resonance (R/S-RESPDOR). In this manuscript we show that the incorporation of a phase modulation into a long quadrupolar recoupling pulse, lasting 10 rotor periods that are sandwiched between rotor-synchronized pairs of dipolar recoupling π pulses, extends significantly the range of the values of the quadrupole moments that can be accessed by the experiment. We show by a combination of simulations and experiments that the new method, phase-modulated LA-REDOR, is very weakly dependent on the actual value of the radio-frequency field, and is highly robust with respect to off-resonance irradiation. The experimental results can be fitted by numerical simulations or using a universal formula corresponding to an equal-transition-probability model. Phase-modulated LA-REDOR (13)C{(11)B} and (15)N{(51)V} dipolar recoupling experiments confirm the accuracy and applicability of this new method.

DRAMAtic transforms in magic angle spinning recoupling NMR: The Bessel function pathway

In magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR recoupling experiments, the extraction of multiple couplings or a coupling distribution from the observed dephasing signals remains a challenging problem. At least for REDOR experiments, the REDOR transform solves this problem, enabling the simultaneous measurement of multiple dipolar couplings. Focusing on the quadrupolar dephasing observed in QUADRAMA experiments as a representative example, we demonstrate that the same analytical form used for the mathematical description of REDOR dephasing also describes the dephasing observed in a wide variety of MAS NMR recoupling experiments. This fact immediately extends REDOR transform techniques to a much broader suite of recoupling experiments than had previously been realized, including those of DRAMA, MELODRAMA and QUADRAMA. As an illustration, we use the DRAMAtic transform to provide the first inversion of a QUADRAMA dephasing signal to extract the quadrupole coupling distribution. Using a complete elliptic integral of the first kind, we further develop a novel expression for the Pake-spun powder patterns of the corresponding recoupled lineshapes. Our methods and results reinforce the central role that Bessel functions can play in simplifying the integrals that define both the dephasing signals in the time domain, and their Fourier transforms in the frequency domain.

13C Solid-state NMR chemical shift anisotropy analysis of the anomeric carbon in carbohydrates

(13)C NMR solid-state structural analysis of the anomeric center in carbohydrates was performed on six monosaccharides: glucose (Glc), mannose (Man), galactose (Gal), galactosamine hydrochloride (GalN), glucosamine hydrochloride (GlcN), and N-acetyl-glucosamine (GlcNAc). In the 1D (13)C cross-polarization/magic-angle spinning (CP/MAS) spectrum, the anomeric center C-1 of these carbohydrates revealed two well resolved resonances shifted by 3-5ppm, which were readily assigned to the anomeric alpha and beta forms. From this experiment, we also extracted the (13)C chemical shift anisotropy (CSA) tensor elements of the two forms from their spinning sideband intensities, respectively. It was found out that the chemical shift tensor for the alpha anomer was more axially symmetrical than that of the beta form. A strong linear correlation was obtained when the ratio of the axial asymmetry of the (13)C chemical shift tensors of the two anomeric forms was plotted in a semilogarithmic plot against the relative population of the two anomers. Finally, we applied REDOR spectroscopy to discern whether or not there were any differences in the sugar ring conformation between the anomers. Identical two-bond distances of 2.57A (2.48A) were deduced for both the alpha and beta forms in GlcNAc (GlcN), suggesting that the two anomers have essentially identical sugar ring scaffolds in these sugars. In light of these REDOR distance measurements and the strong correlation observed between the ratio of the axial asymmetry parameters of the (13)C chemical shift tensors and the relative population between the two anomeric forms, we concluded that the anomeric effect arises principally from interaction of the electron charge clouds between the C-1-O-5 and the C-1-O-1 bonds in these monosaccharides.

Measurement of internuclear distances in solid-state NMR by a background-filtered REDOR experiment

A background-filtered version of the rotational-echo double resonance (REDOR) experiment is demonstrated. The experiment combines a traditional REDOR pulse sequence with a double-cross-polarization (DCP) sequence to select only those signals coming from spin pairs of interest. The relatively inefficient DCP sequence, which transfers polarization from (1)H to (15)N and subsequently to (13)C, is improved by the use of adiabatic passages through the (-1) sideband of the Hartmann-Hahn matching condition. The result is an efficient 2D-REDOR pulse sequence that does not require a reference experiment for removal of background signals. The data produced by the experiment are ideally suited to analysis by newly developed dipolar transform methods, such as the REDOR transform. The relevant features of the experiment are demonstrated on simple labeled amino acids. Relative efficiencies of several other potential filtering methods are also compared.
