Abstract
We investigate the structures and properties of Ge4C-/0 and Ge4CH-/0 clusters using anion photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. Our calculations show that the first two low-lying isomers coexist in the experiments of Ge4C- and Ge4CH-. The first two low-lying isomers of Ge4C- have trigonal bipyramidal structures with the C atom on the equatorial plane and the top vertex, respectively. It is found that the first two low-lying isomers of Ge4CH- can be obtained by adding an H atom to the top and equatorial C atoms of Ge4C-, respectively. The AdNDP analyses reveal that the C atom in Ge4C forms one 4c-2e σ bond, two 4c-2e π bonds, and one 5c-2e σ bond with Ge atoms. The C atom in Ge4C interacts with an H- forming a C-H σ bond in Ge4CH-. AIMD simulation results indicate high dynamic stabilities of Ge4C and Ge4CH- at 300 and 500 K. Our results show that the structures and chemical bonding of Ge4B- and Ge4N+ are similar to those of Ge4C, while those of Ge4BH2- and Ge4NH resemble those of Ge4CH-.

Abstract
More than 40 new 4- to 12-membered ring heterocycles containing various combinations of Group 14 and 16 elements Si, Sn, S, Se, and Te have been synthesized and fully characterized. Synthesis of these small-ring as well as medium-ring (mesocyclic) heterocycles from alpha,omega-dihalides is facilitated by the presence of gem-dialkylsilyl and gem-dialkylstannyl groups in the precursors. Conformations of several of the new ring systems in the solid state have been determined by X-ray crystal structure analysis. Oxidation of mixed S(Se, Te)/Si eight-membered ring mesocycles with NOPF6 or Br2 gives dications or a bicyclic dibromide, respectively, which can be characterized by NMR methods. On treatment with nucleophiles, mesocyclic dications, or the corresponding radical cations undergo ring contraction, giving five- or six-membered ring heterocycles. Photolysis of a S/Se four-membered ring heterocycle gives selenoformaldehyde, trapped in 80% yield with 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene.

Abstract
Experimental and theoretical studies of a novel family of germanium-carbon clusters (Ge(n)C(m)) that were initiated with our earlier identification of the GeC(3)Ge cluster have now been extended to the GeC(7) and GeC(9) chains. The new clusters, which were formed by laser ablation and trapped in solid Ar at approximately 10 K, have been identified using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) measurements coupled with density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. The nu(1)(sigma) vibrational fundamental of linear GeC(7) has been identified at 2063.6 cm(-1), and an absorption at 1928.3 cm(-1) has been assigned to the nu(4)(sigma) fundamental of linear GeC(9). FTIR measurements of the isotopic shifts for the assignments are in good agreement with the DFT predictions.
