Activation of an Open Shell, Carbyne-Bridged Diiron Complex Toward Binding of Dinitrogen

Water-catalyzed iron-molybdenum carbyne formation in bimetallic acetylene transformation

Transition metal carbyne complexes are of fundamental importance in carbon-carbon bond formation, alkyne metathesis, and alkyne coupling reactions. Most reported iron carbyne complexes are stabilized by incorporating heteroatoms. Here we show the synthesis of bioinspired FeMo heterobimetallic carbyne complexes by the conversion of C2H2 through a diverse series of intermediates. Key reactions discovered include the reduction of a μ-η2:η2-C2H2 ligand with a hydride to produce a vinyl ligand (μ-η1:η2-CH = CH2), tautomerization of the vinyl ligand to a carbyne (μ-CCH3), and protonation of either the vinyl or the carbyne compound to form a hydrido carbyne heterobimetallic complex. Mechanistic studies unveil the pivotal role of H2O as a proton shuttle, facilitating the proton transfer that converts the vinyl group to a bridging carbyne.

High-Spin [FeI3] Cluster Capable of Pnictogen Atom Capture

Using a new hexanucleating anildophosphine ligand tBuLH3 (1,3,5-C6H9(NHC6H3-5-F-2-P(tBu)2)3), the all-monovalent [FeI3] compound (tBuL)Fe3 (1) was isolated and characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis, SQUID magnetometry, 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. The molecular structure of 1 reveals very close Fe-Fe distances of 2.3825(7), 2.4146(8), and 2.3913(8) Å which results in significant Fe-Fe interactions and a maximum high-spin S = 9/2 spin state as determined by SQUID magnetometry and further supported by quantum chemical calculations. Compound 1 mediates the multielectron, oxidative atom transfer from inorganic azide ([Bu4N][N3]), cyanate (Na[NCO]), and phosphonate (Na(dioxane)2.5[PCO]) to afford the [Fe3]-nitrido (N3-) and [Fe3]-phosphido (P3-) pnictides, (tBuL)Fe3(μ3-N) (2) and [(tBuL)Fe3(μ3-P)(CO)]- (3), respectively. Compounds 1-3 exhibit rich electrochemical behavior with three (for 1), four (for 2) and five (for 3) distinct redox events being observed in the cyclic voltammograms of these compounds. Finally, the all-monovalent 1 and the formally FeII/FeII/FeI compound 3, were investigated by alternating current (ac) SQUID magnetometry, revealing slow magnetic relaxation in both compounds, with 3 being found to be a unique example of a [Fe3]-phosphido single-molecule magnet having an energy barrier relaxation reversal of U = 30.7(6) cm-1 in the absence of an external magnetic field. This study demonstrates the utility of an all low-valent polynuclear cluster to perform multielectron redox chemistry and exemplifies the redox flexibility and unique physical properties that are present in the corresponding midvalent oxidation products.

Triplet carbenes with transition-metal substituents

The extraordinary advances in carbene (R1-C-R2) chemistry have been fuelled by strategies to stabilize the electronic singlet state via π interactions. In contrast, the lack of similarly efficient approaches to obtain authentic triplet carbenes with appreciable lifetimes beyond cryogenic temperatures hampers their exploitation in synthesis and catalysis. Transition-metal substitution represents a potential strategy, but metallocarbenes (M-C-R) usually represent high-lying excited electronic configurations of the well-established carbyne complexes (M≡C-R). Here we report the synthesis and characterization of triplet metallocarbenes (M-C-SiMe3, M = PdII, PtII) that are persistent beyond cryogenic conditions, and their selective reactivity towards carbene C-H insertion and carbonylation. Bond analysis reveals significant stabilization by spin-polarized push-pull interactions along both π-bonding planes, which fundamentally differs from bonding in push-pull singlet carbenes. This bonding model, thus, expands key strategies for stabilizing the open-shell carbene electromers and closes a conceptual gap towards carbyne complexes.

Iron(I) Complex Bearing an Open-Shell Diazenido Ligand

Low-valent transition-metal diazenido species are important intermediates in transition-metal-mediated dinitrogen reduction reactions. Isolable complexes of the type unanimously feature closed-shell diazenido ligands. Those bearing open-shell diazenido ligands have remained elusive. Herein, we report the synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of a d7 iron(I) complex featuring an open-shell silyldiazenido ligand, [(ICy)Fe(NNSiiPr3)(η2:η2-dvtms)] (1, ICy = 1,3-dicyclohexylimidazole-2-ylidene, dvtms = divinyltetramethyldisiloxane). Complex 1 is prepared in good yield by silylation of the iron(-I)-N2 complex [K(18-crown-6)][(ICy)Fe(N2)(η2:η2-dvtms)] with iPr3SiOTf and has been fully characterized by various spectroscopic methods. Theoretical studies, in combination with characterization data, established an S = 1/2 ground spin-state for 1 that can best be described as a quartet iron(I) center featuring an antiferromagnetically coupled triplet silyldiazenido ligand. The diazenido and alkene ligands in 1 are labile, as indicated by the facile disproportionation reaction of 1 at ambient temperature to transform into the iron(II) bis(diazenido) species [(ICy)(NNSiiPr3)2Fe(dvtms)Fe(NNSiiPr3)2(ICy)] (2) and the iron(0) species [(ICy)Fe(η2:η2-dvtms)] and also the alkene-exchange reaction of 1 with PhCH═CHBC8H14 to form [(ICy)Fe(NNSiiPr3)(η2-trans-PhCH═CHBC8H14)] (3). Complex 1 is light-sensitive. Upon photolysis, it undergoes a SiiPr3 radical-transfer reaction to yield [(ICy)Fe(σ:η2-MeCHSiMe2OSiMe2CH═CHSiiPr3)] (4) and N2. The reactions of 1 with the trityl radical and organic bromides yield iron(II) complexes, which indicates its reducing nature. Moreover, 1 is a weak hydrogen-atom abstractor, as indicated by its inertness toward HSi(SiMe3)3 and cyclohexa-1,4-diene and the low calculated N-H bond dissociation energy (48 kcal/mol) of its corresponding iron(II) iso-hydrazenido species.

Electronic isomerism in a heterometallic nickel-iron-sulfur cluster models substrate binding and cyanide inhibition of carbon monoxide dehydrogenase

The nickel-iron carbon monoxide dehydrogenase (CODH) enzyme uses a heterometallic nickel-iron-sulfur ([NiFe4S4]) cluster to catalyze the reversible interconversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) and carbon monoxide (CO). These reactions are essential for maintaining the global carbon cycle and offer a route towards sustainable greenhouse gas conversion but have not been successfully replicated in synthetic models, in part due to a poor understanding of the natural system. Though the general protein architecture of CODH is known, the electronic structure of the active site is not well-understood, and the mechanism of catalysis remains unresolved. To better understand the CODH enzyme, we have developed a protein-based model containing a heterometallic [NiFe3S4] cluster in the Pyrococcus furiosus (Pf) ferredoxin (Fd). This model binds small molecules such as carbon monoxide and cyanide, analogous to CODH. Multiple redox- and ligand-bound states of [NiFe3S4] Fd (NiFd) have been investigated using a suite of spectroscopic techniques, including resonance Raman, Ni and Fe K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance, to resolve charge and spin delocalization across the cluster, site-specific electron density, and ligand activation. The facile movement of charge through the cluster highlights the fluidity of electron density within iron-sulfur clusters and suggests an electronic basis by which CN- inhibits the native system while the CO-bound state continues to elude isolation in CODH. The detailed characterization of isolable states that are accessible in our CODH model system provides valuable insight into unresolved enzymatic intermediates and offers design principles towards developing functional mimics of CODH.

Highly Activated Terminal Carbon Monoxide Ligand in an Iron-Sulfur Cluster Model of FeMco with Intermediate Local Spin State at Fe

Nitrogenases, the enzymes that convert N2 to NH3, also catalyze the reductive coupling of CO to yield hydrocarbons. CO-coordinated species of nitrogenase clusters have been isolated and used to infer mechanistic information. However, synthetic FeS clusters displaying CO ligands remain rare, which limits benchmarking. Starting from a synthetic cluster that models a cubane portion of the FeMo cofactor (FeMoco), including a bridging carbyne ligand, we report a heterometallic tungsten-iron-sulfur cluster with a single terminal CO coordination in two oxidation states with a high level of CO activation (νCO = 1851 and 1751 cm-1). The local Fe coordination environment (2S, 1C, 1CO) is identical to that in the protein making this system a suitable benchmark. Computational studies find an unusual intermediate spin electronic configuration at the Fe sites promoted by the presence the carbyne ligand. This electronic feature is partly responsible for the high degree of CO activation in the reduced cluster.

Jellyfish-type Dinuclear Hafnium Azido Complexes: Synthesis and Reactivity

Di- and multinuclear hafnium complexes bridged by ligands have been rarely reported. In this article, a novel 3,5-disubstituted pyrazolate-bridged ligand LH5 with two [N2 N]2- -type chelating side arms was designed and synthesized, which supported a series of dinuclear hafnium complexes. Dinuclear hafnium azides [LHf2 (μ-1,1-N3 )2 (N3 )2 ][Na(THF)4 ] 3 and [LHf2 (μ-1,1-N3 )2 (N3 )2 ][Na(2,2,2-Kryptofix)] 4 were further synthesized and structurally characterized, featuring two sets of terminal and bridging azido ligands like jellyfishes. The reactivity of 3 under reduction conditions was conducted, leading to a formation of a tetranuclear hafnium imido complex [L1 Hf2 (μ1 -NH)(N3 ){μ2 -K}]2 5. DFT calculations revealed that the mixed imido azide 5 was generated via an intramolecular C-H insertion from a putative dinuclear HfIV -nitridyl intermediate.

Diiron Aminocarbyne Complexes with NCE− Ligands (E = O, S, Se)

Diiron μ-aminocarbyne complexes [Fe2Cp2(NCMe)(CO)(μ-CO){μ-CN(Me)(R)}]CF3SO3 (R = Xyl, [1aNCMe]CF3SO3; R = Me, [1bNCMe]CF3SO3; R = Cy, [1cNCMe]CF3SO3; R = CH2Ph, [1dNCMe]CF3SO3), freshly prepared from tricarbonyl precursors [1a–d]CF3SO3, reacted with NaOCN (in acetone) and NBu4SCN (in dichloromethane) to give [Fe2Cp2(kN-NCO)(CO)(μ-CO){μ-CN(Me)(R)}] (R = Xyl, 2a; Me, 2b; Cy, 2c) and [Fe2Cp2(kN-NCS)(CO)(μ-CO){μ-CN(Me)(CH2Ph)}], 3 in 67–81% yields via substitution of the acetonitrile ligand. The reaction of [1aNCMe–1cNCMe]CF3SO3 with KSeCN in THF at reflux temperature led to the cyanide complexes [Fe2Cp2(CN)(CO)(μ-CO){μ-CNMe(R)}], 6a–c (45–67%). When the reaction of [1aNCMe]CF3SO3 with KSeCN was performed in acetone at room temperature, subsequent careful chromatography allowed the separation of moderate amounts of [Fe2Cp2(kSe-SeCN)(CO)(μ-CO){μ-CN(Me)(Xyl)}], 4a, and [Fe2Cp2(kN-NCSe)(CO)(μ-CO){μ-CN(Me)(Xyl)}], 5a. All products were fully characterized by elemental analysis, IR, and multinuclear NMR spectroscopy; moreover, the molecular structure of trans-6b was ascertained by single crystal X-ray diffraction. DFT calculations were carried out to shed light on the coordination mode and stability of the {NCSe-} fragment.

Direct Incorporation of Dinitrogen into an Aliphatic C-H Bond

The activation of dinitrogen (N₂) and direct incorporation of its N atom into C-H bonds to create aliphatic C-N compounds remains unresolved. Incompatible conditions between dinitrogen reduction and C-H functionalization make this process extremely challenging. Herein, we report the first example of dinitrogen insertion into an aliphatic Csp³-H bond on the ligand scaffold of a 1,3-propane-bridged [N₂N]^2--type dititanium complex. Mechanistic investigations on the behaviors of dinuclear and mononuclear Ti complexes indicated the intramolecular synergistic effect of two Ti centers at a C-N bond-forming step. Computational studies revealed the critical isomerization between the inactive side-on N₂ complex and the active nitridyl complex, which is responsible for the Csp³-H amination. This strategy maps an efficient route toward the future synthesis of aliphatic amines directly from N₂.

Sulfur-Ligated [2Fe-2C] Clusters as Synthetic Model Systems for Nitrogenase

Metal clusters featuring carbon and sulfur donors have coordination environments comparable to the active site of nitrogenase enzymes. Here, we report a series of di-iron clusters supported by the dianionic yldiide ligands, in which the Fe sites are bridged by two μ2-C atoms and four pendant S donors.The [L2Fe2] (L = {[Ph2P(S)]2C}2-) cluster is isolable in two oxidation levels, all-ferrous Fe2II and mixed-valence FeIIFeIII. The mixed-valence cluster displays two peaks in the Mössbauer spectra, indicating slow electron transfer between the two sites. The addition of the Lewis base 4-dimethylaminopyridine to the Fe2II cluster results in coordination with only one of the two Fe sites, even in the presence of an excess base. Conversely, the cluster reacts with 8 equiv of isocyanide tBuNC to give a monometallic complex featuring a new C-C bond between the ligand backbone and the isocyanide. The electronic structure descriptions of these complexes are further supported by X-ray absorption and resonant X-ray emission spectroscopies.

Synthesis of a Fe3-Carbyne Motif by Oxidation of an Alkyl Ligated Iron-Sulfur (WFe3S3) Cluster

The presence of a carbide ligand in the active site of nitrogenases remains an unusual example of organometallic chemistry employed by a protein. Carbide incorporation into the MFe7S9C cluster involves complex biosynthesis, but analogous synthetic methodologies are limited. Herein, we present a new synthetic strategy for incorporating carbon based bridging ligands into iron-sulfur clusters. Starting from a halide precursor, a WFe3S3 cluster displaying three terminal alkyl ligands and an open Fe3 face was prepared. Oxidation results in loss of alkane and formation of a μ3-carbyne. Characterization of these clusters and mechanistic studies are presented.

Dinitrogen Binding and Activation: Bonding Analyses of Stable V(III/I)-N2-V(III/I) Complexes by the EDA-NOCV Method from the Perspective of Vanadium Nitrogenase

The FeVco cofactor of nitrogenase (VFe₇S₈(CO₃)C) is an alternative in the molybdenum (Mo)-deficient free soil living azotobacter vinelandii. The rate of N₂ reduction to NH₃ by FeVco is a few times higher than that by FeMoco (MoFe₇S₉C) at low temperature. It provides a N source in the form of ammonium ions to the soil. This biochemical NH₃ synthesis is an alternative to the industrial energy-demanding production of NH₃ by the Haber-Bosch process. The role of vanadium has not been clearly understood yet, which has led chemists to come up with several stable V-N₂ complexes which have been isolated and characterized in the laboratory over the past three decades. Herein, we report the EDA-NOCV analyses of dinitrogen-bonded stable complexes V(III/I)-N₂ (1-4) to provide deeper insights into the fundamental bonding aspects of V-N₂ bond, showing the interacting orbitals and corresponding pairwise orbital interaction energies (ΔE _orb(n)). The computed intrinsic interaction energy (ΔE _int) of V-N₂-V bonds is significantly higher than those of the previously reported Fe-N₂-Fe bonds. Covalent interaction energy (ΔE _orb) is more than double the electrostatic interaction energy (ΔE _elstat) of V-N₂-V bonds. ΔE _int values of V-N₂-V bonds are in the range of -172 to -204 kcal/mol. The V → N₂ ← V π-backdonation is four times stronger than V ← N₂ → V σ-donation. V-N₂ bonds are much more covalent in nature than Fe-N₂ bonds.

Macrocycle-Induced Modulation of Internuclear Interactions in Homobimetallic Complexes

A synthetic route has been developed for a series of 3d homobimetallic complexes of Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu using three different pyridyldiimine and pyridyldialdimine macrocyclic ligands with ring sizes of 18, 20, and 22 atoms. Crystallographic analyses indicate that while the distances between the metals can be modulated by the size of the macrocycle pocket, the flexibility in the alkyl linkers used to construct the macrocycles enables the ligand to adjust the orientation of the PD(A)I fragments in response to the geometry of the [M₂(μ-Cl)₂]²⁺ core, particularly with respect to Jahn-Teller distortions. Analyses by UV-vis spectroscopy and SQUID magnetometry revealed deviations in the properties [M₂(μ-Cl)₂]²⁺-containing complexes bound by standard mononucleating ligands, highlighting the ability of macrocycles to use ring size to control the magnetic interactions of pseudo-octahedral, high-spin metal centers.

EDA-NOCV analysis of carbene-borylene bonded dinitrogen complexes for deeper bonding insight: A fair comparison with a metal-dinitrogen system

Binding of dinitrogen (N₂ ) to a transition metal center (M) and followed by its activation under milder conditions is no longer impossible; rather, it is routinely studied in laboratories by transition metal complexes. In contrast, binding of N₂ by main group elements has been a challenge for decades, until very recently, an exotic cAAC-borylene (cAAC = cyclic alkyl(amino) carbene) species showed similar binding affinity to kinetically inert and non-polar dinitrogen (N₂ ) gas under ambient conditions. Since then, N₂ binding by short lived borylene species has made a captivating news in different journals for its unusual features and future prospects. Herein, we carried out different types of DFT calculations, including EDA-NOCV analysis of the relevant cAAC-boron-dinitrogen complexes and their precursors, to shed light on the deeper insight of the bonding secret (EDA-NOCV = energy decomposition analysis coupled with natural orbital for chemical valence). The hidden bonding aspects have been uncovered and are presented in details. Additionally, similar calculations have been carried out in comparison with a selected stable dinitrogen bridged-diiron(I) complex. Singlet cAAC ligand is known to be an exotic stable species which, combined with the BAr group, produces an intermediate singlet electron-deficient (cAAC)(BAr) species possessing a high lying HOMO suitable for overlapping with the high lying π*-orbital of N₂ via effective π-backdonation. The BN₂ interaction energy has been compared with that of the FeN₂ bond. Our thorough bonding analysis might answer the unasked questions of experimental chemists about how boron compounds could mimic the transition metal of dinitrogen binding and activation, uncovering hidden bonding aspects. Importantly, Pauling repulsion energy also plays a crucial role and decides the binding efficiency in terms of intrinsic interaction energy between the boron-center and the N₂ ligand.

Fragmentation and transferability in Hirshfeld atom refinement

Hirshfeld atom refinement (HAR) is one of the most effective methods for obtaining accurate structural parameters for hydrogen atoms from X-ray diffraction data. Unfortunately, it is also relatively computationally expensive, especially for larger molecules due to wavefunction calculations. Here, a fragmentation approach has been tested as a remedy for this problem. It gives an order of magnitude improvement in computation time for larger organic systems and is a few times faster for metal-organic systems at the cost of only minor differences in the calculated structural parameters when compared with the original HAR calculations. Fragmentation was also applied to polymeric and disordered systems where it provides a natural solution to problems that arise when HAR is applied. The concept of fragmentation is closely related to the transferable aspherical atom model (TAAM) and allows insight into possible ways to improve TAAM. Hybrid approaches combining fragmentation with the transfer of atomic densities between chemically similar atoms have been tested. An efficient handling of intermolecular interactions was also introduced for calculations involving fragmentation. When applied in fragHAR (a fragmentation approach for polypeptides) as a replacement for the original approach, it allowed for more efficient calculations. All of the calculations were performed with a locally modified version of Olex2 combined with a development version of discamb2tsc and ORCA. Care was taken to efficiently use the power of multicore processors by simple implementation of load-balancing, which was found to be very important for lowering computational time.

Probing Redox Non-Innocence in Iron-Carbene Complexes {Fe=C(H)Ar}10-11 by 1,2 H and 13 C Pulse Electron Paramagnetic Resonance

We report the synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of a series of iron-carbene complexes in redox states {Fe=C(H)Ar}^10-11 . Pulse EPR studies of the ^1,2 H and ¹³ C isotopologues of {Fe=C(H)Ar}¹¹ reveal the high covalency of the Fe-carbene bonding, leading to a more even spin distribution than commonly observed for reduced Fischer carbenes.

Partial synthetic models of FeMoco with sulfide and carbyne ligands: Effect of interstitial atom in nitrogenase active site

Nitrogen-fixing organisms perform dinitrogen reduction to ammonia at an Fe-M (M = Mo, Fe, or V) cofactor (FeMco) of nitrogenase. FeMco displays eight metal centers bridged by sulfides and a carbide having the MFe₇S₈C cluster composition. The role of the carbide ligand, a unique motif in protein active sites, remains poorly understood. Toward addressing how the carbon bridge affects the physical and chemical properties of the cluster, we isolated synthetic models of subsite MFe₃S₃C displaying sulfides and a chelating carbyne ligand. We developed synthetic protocols for structurally related clusters, [Tp*M'Fe₃S₃X]^n-, where M' = Mo or W, the bridging ligand X = CR, N, NR, S, and Tp* = Tris(3,5-dimethyl-1-pyrazolyl)hydroborate, to study the effects of the identity of the heterometal and the bridging X group on structure and electrochemistry. While the nature of M' results in minor changes, the chelating, μ₃-bridging carbyne has a large impact on reduction potentials, being up to 1 V more reducing compared to nonchelating N and S analogs.

Fixation of Dinitrogen at an Asymmetric Binuclear Titanium Complex

A new type of dititanium dinitrogen complex supported by a triphenolamine (TPA) ligand is reported. Analysis by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and Raman and NMR spectroscopy reveals different coordination geometries for the two titanium centers. Hence, coordination of TPA and a nitrogen ligand results in trigonal-bipyramidal geometry, while an octahedral titanium center is obtained upon additional coordination of an ethoxide generated upon C-O bond cleavage in a diethyl ether solvent molecule. The titanium complex successfully generates ammonia in the presence of an excess amount of PCy₃HI and KC₈ in 154% yield (per titanium atom). A titanium complex with a bulkier TPA does not form a dinitrogen complex, and mononuclear titanium dinitrogen complexes were not accessible, presumably because of the high tendency of early transition metals to form binuclear dinitrogen complexes.

Terminal, Open-Shell Mo Carbide and Carbyne Complexes: Spin Delocalization and Ligand Noninnocence

Open-shell compounds bearing metal-carbon triple bonds, such as carbides and carbynes, are of significant interest as plausible intermediates in the reductive catenation of C₁ oxygenates. Despite the abundance of closed-shell carbynes reported, open-shell variants are very limited, and an open-shell carbide has yet to be reported. Herein, we report the synthesis of the first terminal, open-shell carbide complexes, [K][1] and [1][BAr^F₄] (1 = P2Mo(≡C:)(CO), P2 = a terphenyl diphosphine ligand), which differ by two redox states, as well as a series of related open-shell carbyne complexes. The complexes are characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and NMR, EPR, and IR spectroscopies, while the electronic structures are probed by EPR studies and DFT calculations to assess spin delocalization. In the d₁ complexes, the spin is primarily localized on the metal (∼55-77% Mo d_xy) with delocalization on the triply bonded carbon of ∼0.05-0.09 e^-. In the reduced carbide [K][1], a direct metal-arene interaction enables ancillary ligand reduction, resulting in reduced radical character on the terminal carbide (⩽0.02 e^-). Reactivity studies with [K][1] reveal the formation of mixed-valent C-C coupled products at -40 °C, illustrating how productive reactivity manifolds can be engendered through the manipulation of redox states. Combined, the results inform on the electronic structure and reactivity of a new and underrepresented class of compounds with potential significance to a wide array of reactions involving open-shell species.

Structure, reactivity, and spectroscopy of nitrogenase-related synthetic and biological clusters

The reduction of dinitrogen (N2) is essential for its incorporation into nucleic acids and amino acids, which are vital to life on earth. Nitrogenases convert atmospheric dinitrogen to two ammonia molecules (NH3) under ambient conditions. The catalytic active sites of these enzymes (known as FeM-cofactor clusters, where M = Mo, V, Fe) are the sites of N2 binding and activation and have been a source of great interest for chemists for decades. In this review, recent studies on nitrogenase-related synthetic molecular complexes and biological clusters are discussed, with a focus on their reactivity and spectroscopic characterization. The molecular models that are discussed span from simple mononuclear iron complexes to multinuclear iron complexes and heterometallic iron complexes. In addition, recent work on the extracted biological cofactors is discussed. An emphasis is placed on how these studies have contributed towards our understanding of the electronic structure and mechanism of nitrogenases.

Access to and Reactivity of Fe0 , Fe-I , FeI , and FeII PCcarbene P Pincer Complexes

Despite their promising metal-ligand cooperative reactivity, PC_carbene P pincer ligands are rarely reported for first-row transition-metal centres. Using a dehydration methodology, we report access to an Fe⁰ PC_carbene P pincer complex (1) that proceeds via an isolated α-hydroxylalkyl hydrido complex (3). Reversible carbonyl migration to the carbene position in 1 is found to allow coordination chemistry and E-H bond addition (E=H, B, Cl) across the iron-carbene linkage, representing a unique mechanism for metal-ligand cooperativity. The PC_carbene P pincer ligand is also found to stabilize formal Fe^II , Fe^I , and Fe^-I oxidation states, as demonstrated with synthesis and characterization of the complexes [11-X][BAr^F ₂₀ ] (X=Br, I), 12, and K[13]. Compound K[13] is found to be highly reactive, and abstracts hydrogen from a range of aliphatic C-H sources. Computational analysis by DFT suggests that the formal Fe^I and Fe^-I complexes contain significant carbene radical character. The ability of the PC_carbene P ligand scaffold to partake in metal-ligand cooperativity and to support a range of iron oxidation states renders it as potentially useful in many catalytic applications.

A diazene-bridged diruthenium complex with structural restraint defined by single meta-diphosphinobenzene

Creation of confined coordination spaces with controlled flexibility is of importance in mimicking enzymatic reactions. We found that a simple, non-chelating 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)benzene (DPPBz) assembled two Cp*Ru units to give a dinuclear complex, wherein only one DPPBz supports an open framework without metal-metal bonding. Subsequent treatment with an excess of hydrazine resulted in formal 2e^-/2H⁺ transfer from hydrazine to afford a diazene-bridged complex featuring intramolecular NHCl hydrogen bonds. In constrast, a monophosphine failed to stabilize the diazene-bridged dinuclear structure due to the lack of the enforcement of the conformation.

Mixed-Valent Diiron μ-Carbyne, μ-Hydride Complexes: Implications for Nitrogenase

Binding of N₂ by the FeMo-cofactor of nitrogenase is believed to occur after transfer of 4 e^- and 4 H⁺ equivalents to the active site. Although pulse EPR studies indicate the presence of two Fe-(μ-H)-Fe moieties, the structural and electronic features of this mixed valent intermediate remain poorly understood. Toward an improved understanding of this bioorganometallic cluster, we report herein that diiron μ-carbyne complex (P₆ArC)Fe₂(μ-H) can be oxidized and reduced, allowing for the first time spectral characterization of two EPR-active Fe(μ-C)(μ-H)Fe model complexes linked by a 2 e^- transfer which bear some resemblance to a pair of E_n and E_n+2 states of nitrogenase. Both species populate S = 1/2 states at low temperatures, and the influence of valence (de)localization on the spectroscopic signature of the μ-hydride ligand was evaluated by pulse EPR studies. Compared to analogous data for the {Fe₂(μ-H)}₂ state of FeMoco (E₄(4H)), the data and analysis presented herein suggest that the hydride ligands in E₄(4H) bridge isovalent (most probably Fe^III) metal centers. Although electron transfer involves metal-localized orbitals, investigations of [(P₆ArC)Fe₂(μ-H)]⁺¹ and [(P₆ArC)Fe₂(μ-H)]^-1 by pulse EPR revealed that redox chemistry induces significant changes in Fe-C covalency (-50% upon 2 e^- reduction), a conclusion further supported by X-ray absorption spectroscopy, ⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer studies, and DFT calculations. Combined, our studies demonstrate that changes in covalency buffer against the accumulation of excess charge density on the metals by partially redistributing it to the bridging carbon, thereby facilitating multielectron transformations.

Pentanuclear Scaffold: A Molecular Platform for Small-Molecule Conversions

Small-molecule conversions involving multielectron transfer processes enable the conversion of earth-abundant materials into valuable chemicals and are regarded as a solution for environmental and energy shortage problems. In this context, the development of artificial catalysts that promote these reactions is an important research target. In nature, metalloenzymes that contain multinuclear metal complexes as active sites are known to efficiently catalyze reactions under mild conditions. Therefore, using multinuclear metal complexes as artificial catalysts can be an attractive strategy for small-molecule conversions involving multielectron transfer processes. However, multinuclear-metal-complex-based catalysts for these reactions have not been well established. In this Account, we describe our recent advances in the development of multinuclear metal complexes as catalysts for small-molecule conversion, mainly focusing on water oxidation. As small-molecule conversions involving multielectron transfer processes consists of two essential processes, (1) the transfer of multiple electrons and (2) the formation/cleavage of covalent bond(s), catalysts for these reactions should facilitate both steps. Therefore, we assumed that the assembly of redox-active metal ions and the cooperative effect of neighboring coordinatively unsaturated metal ions can promote these processes. On the basis of this assumption, we employed a pentanuclear metal complex as a molecular scaffold for the catalyst. The scaffold has a pentanuclear structure with quasi-D₃ symmetry and consists of a [M₃(μ₃-X)] core (X = O^2- or OH^-) wrapped by two [M(μ-bpp)₃] units (Hbpp = 3,5-bis(2-pyridyl)pyrazole). The metal ions in the triangular core are coordinatively unsaturated, whereas the metal ions at the apical positions are coordinatively saturated. In other words, the pentanuclear scaffold possesses multiple redox-active centers and coordinatively unsaturated sites. It should also be noted that the electron transfer ability of the complex changes dramatically depending on the identity of the constituent metal ions. The iron derivative of the pentanuclear scaffold was found to serve as an electrocatalyst for water oxidation (2H₂O → O₂ + 4e^- + 4H⁺) with a high reaction rate and excellent robustness. The substitution of metal ions in the pentanuclear scaffold to cobalt ions resulted in the development of a catalyst for CO₂ reduction. Furthermore, we investigated the effect of substituents on the ligands of the pentanuclear iron complex and succeeded in precisely manipulating the electron transfer possess. These results clearly demonstrate that the pentanuclear scaffold is an attractive platform for catalysts for small-molecule conversions. Additionally, the intrinsic features of the multinuclear catalytic system, which are totally different from those of conventional mononuclear-metal-complex-based catalysts, are disclosed. In reactions mediated by multinuclear complexes, the multinuclear core can initially accumulate the charge required for catalysis to reach the catalytically active state. Subsequently, the catalyst in the active state reacts with the substrate, initiating electron transfer to the substrate and rearrangement of covalent bonds in the substrate to afford the product. In such a mechanism, the desired number of electrons can be transferred to the substrates in an on-demand fashion, and the formation of undesired chemical species in the targeted catalysis may be prevented. This feature of multinuclear-metal-complex-based catalysts will achieve demanding small-molecule conversions with a high reaction rate, selectivity, and durability.

The influences of carbon donor ligands on biomimetic multi-iron complexes for N2 reduction

The active site clusters of nitrogenase enzymes possess the only examples of carbides in biology. These are the only biological FeS clusters that are capable of reducing N₂ to NH₄⁺, implicating the central carbon and its interaction with Fe as important in the mechanism of N₂ reduction. This biological question motivates study of the influence of carbon donors on the electronic structure and reactivity of unsaturated, high-spin iron centers. Here, we present functional and structural models that test the impacts of carbon donors and sulfide donors in simpler iron compounds. We report the first example of a diiron complex that is bridged by an alkylidene and a sulfide, which serves as a high-fidelity structural and spectroscopic model of a two-iron portion of the active-site cluster (FeMoco) in the resting state of Mo-nitrogenase. The model complexes have antiferromagnetically coupled pairs of high-spin iron centers, and sulfur K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy shows comparable covalency of the sulfide for C and S bridged species. The sulfur-bridged compound does not interact with N₂ even upon reduction, but upon removal of the sulfide it becomes capable of reducing N₂ to NH₄⁺ with the addition of protons and electrons. This provides synthetic support for sulfide extrusion in the activation of nitrogenase cofactors.
