Tertiary Hierarchical Complexity in Assemblies of Sulfur-Bridged Metal Chiral Clusters

Supramolecularly Dimeric Assemble of Planar Cu13 Clusters Controlled by the Length of Spacers of Diphosphine

The controlled formation of dimeric clusters is challenging. Three copper(I) clusters, labeled as {Cu13[o-Ph(C≡C)2]6(L)4}(ClO4), were synthesized by using three different ligands, including 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)butane (dppb), 1,5-bis(diphenylphosphino)pentane (dpppe), and bis(diphenylphosphino)hexane (dpph). By increasing the flexibility of alkyl spacers in the diphosphine ligands, the relative positions of the phenyl rings could be optimized to achieve efficient packing with maximized intercluster interactions. In the crystal structures, cluster 1 with dppb ligands did not display interlocked structures. In contrast, cluster 2 with dpppe ligands formed supramolecularly interlocked polymers through weak π-π interactions and C-H···π interactions, while cluster 3 employing dpph ligands formed supramolecularly interlocked dimers with strong π-π interactions and C-H···π interactions. The supramolecular dimer of 3 was also evidenced by analyses through electrospray ionization mass spectrometry and transmission electron microscopy. Density functional theory calculation was used to understand the electronic structure and transitions. Supramolecularly interlocked polymers/dimers with rigid structures exhibited higher quantum efficiency. The solution of these clusters demonstrated remarkable aggregation-induced emission enhancements. This study presents unique examples of planar luminescent copper clusters, featuring the first serial dialkynyl-protected cluster. It underlines the importance of ligand flexibility in creating supramolecular cluster dimers.

A High-Nuclearity Copper Sulfide Nanocluster [S-Cu50] Featuring a Double-Shell Structure Configuration with Cu(II)/Cu(I) Valences

This work represents an important step in the quest for creating atomically precise binary semiconductor nanoclusters (BS-NCs). Compared with coinage metal NCs, the preparation of BS-NCs requires strict control of the reaction kinetics to guarantee the formation of an atomically precise single phase under mild conditions, which otherwise could lead to the generation of multiple phases. Herein, we developed an acid-assisted thiolate dissociation approach that employs suitable acid to induce cleavage of the S-C bonds in the Cu-S-R (R = alkyl) precursor, spontaneously fostering the formation of the [Cu-S-Cu] skeleton upon the addition of extra Cu sources. Through this method, a high-nuclearity copper sulfide nanocluster, Cu50S12(SC(CH3)3)20(CF3COO)12 (abbreviated as [S-Cu50] hereafter), has been successfully prepared in high yield, and its atomic structure was accurately modeled through single-crystal X-ray diffraction. It was revealed that [S-Cu50] exhibits a unique double-shell structural configuration of [Cu14S12]@[Cu36S20], and the innermost [Cu14] moiety displays a rhombic dodecahedron geometry, which has never been observed in previously synthesized Cu metal, hydride, or chalcogenide NCs. Importantly, [S-Cu50] represents the first example incorporating mixed Cu(II)/Cu(I) valences in reported atomically precise copper sulfide NCs, which was unambiguously confirmed by XPS, EPR, and XANES. In addition, the electronic structure of [S-Cu50] was established by a variety of optical investigations, including absorption, photoluminescence, and ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopies, as well as theoretical calculations. Moreover, [S-Cu50] is air-stable and demonstrates electrocatalytic activity in ORR with a four-electron pathway.

Cu(I)-thioether coordination complexes based on a chiral cyclic β-amino acid ligand

Coordination complexes, particularly metalloproteins, highlight the significance of metal-sulfur bonds in biological processes. Their unique attributes inspire efforts to synthetically reproduce these intricate metal-sulfur motifs. Here, we investigate the synthesis and characterization of copper(I)-thioether coordination complexes derived from copper(I) halides and the chiral cyclic β-amino acid trans-4-aminotetrahydrothiophene-3-carboxylic acid (ATTC), which present distinctive structural properties and ligand-to-metal ratios. By incorporating ATTC as the ligand, we generated complexes that feature a unique chiral conformation and the capacity for hydrogen bonding, facilitating the formation of distinct geometric structures. Through spectroscopic analyses and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we studied the complexes' optical properties, including their emission bands and variable second-harmonic generation (SHG) efficiencies, which vary based on the halide used. Our findings underscore the potential of the ATTC ligand in creating unusual coordination complexes and pave the way for further investigations into their potential applications, particularly within materials science.

Advances in Cu nanocluster catalyst design: recent progress and promising applications

The quest for cleaner pathways to the production of fuels and chemicals from non-fossil feedstock, efficient transformation of raw materials to value-added chemicals under mild conditions, and control over the activity and selectivity of chemical processes are driving the state-of-the-art approaches to the construction and precise chemical modification of sustainable nanocatalysts. As a burgeoning category of atomically precise noble metal nanoclusters, copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) benefitting from their exclusive structural architecture, ingenious designability of active sites and high surface-to-volume ratio qualify as potential rationally-designed catalysts. In this Minireview, we present a detailed coverage of the optimal design strategies and controlled synthesis of Cu NC catalysts with a focus on tuning of active sites at the atomic level, the implications of cluster size, shape and structure, the ligands and heteroatom doping on catalytic activity, and reaction scope ranging from chemical catalysis to emerging photocatalysis and electrocatalysis.

Total Structure, Electronic Structure and Catalytic Hydrogenation Activity of Metal-Deficient Chiral Polyhydride Cu57 Nanoclusters

Accurate identifying and in-depth understanding of the defect sites in a working nanomaterial could hinge on establishing specific defect-activity relationships. Yet, atomically precise coinage-metal nanoclusters (NCs) possessing surface vacancy defects are scarce primarily owing to challenges in the synthesis and isolation of such defective NCs. Herein we report a mixed-ligand strategy to synthesizing an intrinsically chiral and metal-deficient copper hydride-rich NC [Cu57 H20 (PET)36 (TPP)4 ]+ (Cu57 H20 ). Its total structure (including hydrides) and electronic structure are well established by combined experimental and computational results. Crystal structure reveals Cu57 H20 features a cube-like Cu8 kernel embedded in a corner-missing metal-ligand shell of Cu49 (PET)36 (TPP)4 . Single Cu vacancy defect site occurs at one corner of the shell, evocative of mono-lacunary polyoxometalates. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the above-mentioned point vacancy causes one surface hydride exposed as an interfacial capping μ3 -H- , which is accessible in chemical reaction, as proved by deuterated experiment. Moreover, Cu57 H20 shows catalytic activity in the hydrogenation of nitroarene. The success of this work opens the way for the research on well-defined chiral metal-deficient Cu and other metal NCs, including exploring their application in asymmetrical catalysis.

An atomically precise Ag18Cu8 nanocluster with rich alkynyl-metal coordination structures and unique SbF6- assembling modes

Elucidating the coordination structures and assembling modes of atomically precise metal nanoclusters (NCs) remains a hot topic as it gives answers to the underlying mechanism of nanomaterials and bulk materials in terms of structure-property relationships. Here we report a novel silver-copper alloy NC featuring rich alkynyl-metal coordination modes and unique SbF₆^- assembling structures. The NC, with the composition of [Ag₁₈Cu₈(dppp)₄(^tBu-C₆H₄CC)₂₂](SbF₆)₄ (dppp = 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)-propane), was prepared by a stepwise synthetic approach. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that such a NC featured a staircase-like Ag₁₈Cu₈ kernel, which was protected by hybrid alkynyl and dppp ligands in diverse coordination structures and multiple environments. The structural analysis also revealed the unique function of SbF₆^- in inducing the assembly of cluster moieties, highlighting the importance of counterions in assembling nanomolecules. The diverse coordination structures of the protective ligands with metal ions and the indispensable roles of counterions in assembling the cluster moieties have also been supported by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) studies, making it a model system to showcase the uniqueness of atomically precise metal NCs in illustrating the coordination chemistry of nanomaterials and bulk materials at the molecular level.

Bicarbonate insertion triggered self-assembly of chiral octa-gold nanoclusters into helical superstructures in the crystalline state

Constructing atomically precise helical superstructures of high order is an extensively pursued subject for unique aesthetic features and underlying applications. However, the construction of cluster-based helixes of well-defined architectures comes with a huge challenge owing to their intrinsic complexity in geometric structures and synthetic processes. Herein, we report a pair of unique P- and M-single stranded helical superstructures spontaneously assembled from R- and S-Au8c individual nanoclusters, respectively, upon selecting chiral BINAP (2,2′-bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1′-binaphthalene) and hydrophilic o-H₂MBA (o-mercaptobenzoic acid) as protective ligands to induce chirality and facilitate the formation of helixes. Structural analysis reveals that the chirality of the Au8c individual nanoclusters is derived from the homochiral ligands and the inherently chiral Au₈ metallic kernel, which was further corroborated by experimental and computational investigations. More importantly, driven by the O–H⋯O interactions between (HCO₃⁻)₂ dimers and achiral o-HMBA⁻ ligands, R/S-Au8c individual nanoclusters can assemble into helical superstructures in a highly ordered crystal packing. Electrospray ionization (ESI) and collision-induced dissociation (CID) mass spectrometry of Au8c confirm the hydrogen-bonded dimer of Au8c individual nanoclusters in solution, illustrating that the insertion of (HCO₃⁻)₂ dimers plays a crucial role in the assembly of helical superstructures in the crystalline state. This work not only demonstrates an effective strategy to construct cluster-based helical superstructures at the atomic level, but also provides visual and reliable experimental evidence for understanding the formation mechanism of helical superstructures.

A pair of unprecedented helical superstructures via self-assembly of inherently homochiral Au₈ nanoclusters, [Au₈(R/S-BINAP)₃(o-HMBA)₂]·2(HCO₃), is obtained in the crystalline state, in which the HCO₃⁻ ions act as the bridge.

A double helical 4H assembly pattern with secondary hierarchical complexity in an Ag70 nanocluster crystal

The hierarchical assemblies of well-defined structural nanoclusters can help to better understand those of biologically important molecules such as DNA and proteins. Herein, we disclose the synthesis and characterization of a new silver nanocluster, that is Ag₇₀(SR)₄₂(PPh₃)₅ (Ag70-TPP). Directed by the ligands, Ag70-TPP nanoclusters undergo self-hierarchical assembly into a highly space-efficient complex secondary structure of a double helical 4H (DH4H) close packing pattern. The chirality of Ag70-TPP, and the van der Waals forces interactions between the ligands are believed to drive its DH4H arrangement, and the observed interlocking of the phosphine ligands of adjacent Ag70-TPP nanoclusters also contributed. Overall, this work has yielded important and unprecedented insights into the internal structure and crystallographic arrangement of nanoclusters.

Tertiary Chiral Nanostructures from C-H⋅⋅⋅F Directed Assembly of Chiroptical Superatoms

We report the synthesis and structure of tertiary chiral nanostructures with 100 % optical purity. A novel synthetic strategy, using chiral reducing agent, R and S-BINAPCuBH₄ (BINAP is 2,2'-Bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1'-binaphthyl), is developed to access to atomically precise, intrinsically chiral [Au₇ Ag₆ Cu₂ (R- or S-BINAP)₃ (SCH₂ Ph)₆ ]SbF₆ nanoclusters in one-pot synthesis. The clusters represent the first tri-metallic superatoms with inherent chirality and fair stability. Both metal distribution (primary) and ligand arrangement (secondary) of the enantiomers exhibited perfect mirror images, and unprecedentedly, the self-assembly driven by the C-H⋅⋅⋅F interaction between the phenyl groups of the superatom moieties and SbF₆ ^- anions induced the formation of bio-mimic left- and right-handed helices, achieving the tertiary chiral nanostructures. DFT calculations revealed the connections between the molecular details and chiral optical activity.

Alkynyl-Stabilized Superatomic Silver Clusters Showing Circularly Polarized Luminescence

We report a new enantiomeric pair of superatomic silver clusters, R/S-Ag₁₇, prepared from chiral alkynyl ligands. R-Ag₁₇ and S-Ag₁₇ possess C₃ symmetry and emit near-infrared (NIR) light with a quantum yield (QY) of 8.0% under ambient condition as well as NIR circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) as a result of the chirality of the excited states. Both experiments and theoretical calculations indicate for the first time that the CPL originates from transitions between superatomic 1P_z (along the C₃ axis) and 1S orbitals. This work opens a new avenue for CPL-active metal nanoclusters by utilizing chiral alkynyl ligands and enlightens the chirality transfer from chiral protecting ligands to superatomic states in metal clusters.

Multiscale Assembly of [AgS4 ] Tetrahedrons into Hierarchical Ag-S Networks for Robust Photonic Water

There is an urgent need to assemble ultrasmall metal chalcogenides (with atomic precision) into functional materials with the required anisotropy and uniformity, on a micro- or even macroscale. Here, a delicate yet simple chemistry is developed to produce a silver-sulfur network microplate with a high monodispersity in size and morphology. Spanning from the atomic, molecular, to nanometer, to micrometer scale, the key structural evolution of the obtained microplates includes 2D confinement growth, edge-sharing growth mode, and thermodynamically driven layer-by-layer stacking, all of which are derived from the [AgS₄ ] tetrahedron unit. The key to such a high hierarchical, complex, and accurate assembly is the dense deprotonated ligand layer on the surface of the microplates, forming an infinite surface with high negative charge density. This feature operates at an orderly distance to allow further hierarchical self-assembly on the microscale to generate columnar assemblies composed of microplate components, thereby endowing the feature of the 1D photonic reflector to water (i.e., photonic water). The reflective color of the resulting photonic water is highly dependent on the thickness of the building blocks (i.e., silver-sulfur microplates), and the coexistent order and fluidity help to form robust photonic water.
