Bifunctional Carbenium Dications as Metal-Free Catalysts for the Reduction of Oxygen

Triaryl Carbenium Ion Pair Mediated Electrocatalytic Benzylic C-H Oxygenation in Air

The selective oxidation of benzylic C-H bonds is a pivotal transformation in organic synthesis. Undoubtedly, achieving efficient and highly selective aerobic oxidation of methylarenes to benzaldehydes has been highly challenging due to the propensity of benzaldehyde to undergo overoxidation under typical aerobic conditions. Herein, we propose an innovative approach to address this issue by leveraging electrocatalytic processes, facilitated by ion-pair mediators [Ph3C]+[B(C6F5)4]-. By harnessing the power of electrochemistry, we successfully demonstrated the effectiveness of our strategy, which enables the selective oxidation of benzylic C-H bonds in benzylic molecules and toluene derivatives. Notably, our approach exhibited high efficiency, excellent selectivity, and compatibility with various functional groups, underscoring the broad applicability of our methodology.

Metal-Free Homogeneous O2 Reduction by an Iminium-Based Electrocatalyst

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is important for alternative energy and industrial oxidation processes. Herein, an iminium-based organoelectrocatalyst (im+) for the ORR with trifluoroacetic acid as a proton source in acetonitrile solution under both electrochemical and spectrochemical conditions using decamethylferrocene as a chemical reductant is reported. Under spectrochemical conditions, H2O2 is the primary reaction product, while under electrochemical conditions H2O is produced. This difference in selectivity is attributed to the interception of the free superoxide intermediate under electrochemical conditions by the reduced catalyst, accessing an alternate inner-sphere pathway.

Double axial stabilization of a carbenium ion via convergent PO → C+ tetrel bonding

Our efforts in carbocation chemistry have led us to target examples of such species stabilized intramolecularly by tetrel bonding. Described here is an example of such a compound in which a triaryl carbenium is stabilized intramolecularly by two convergent PO → Ccarbenium interactions, as confirmed by structural studies. The formation of this new motif favorably impacts the reversibility of the first and second reduction of the carbenium center. It also has profound influence on the Lewis acidity of the carbenium center which is lower than that of the unsubstituted parent carbenium by seven orders of magnitude.

Redox-active carborane clusters in bond activation chemistry and ligand design

Icosahedral closo-dodecaboranes have the ability to accept two electrons, opening into a dianionic nido-cluster. This transformation can be utilized to store electrons, drive bond activation, or alter coordination to metal cations. In this feature article, we present cases for each of these applications, wherein the redox activity of carborane facilitates the generation of unique products. We highlight the effects of exohedral substituents on reactivity and the stability of the products through conjugation between the cluster and exohedral substituents. Futher, the utilization of the redox properties and geometry of carborane clusters in the ligand design is detailed, both in the stabilization of low-valent complexes and in the tuning of ligand geometry.

Four-Electron Reduction of O2 Using Distibines in the Presence of ortho-Quinones

This study, which aims to identify atypical platforms for the reduction of dioxygen, describes the reaction of O2 with two distibines, namely, 4,5-bis(diphenylstibino)-2,7-di-tert-butyl-9,9-dimethylxanthene and 4,5-bis(diphenylstibino)-2,7-di-tert-butyl-9,9-dimethyldihydroacridine, in the presence of an ortho-quinone such as phenanthraquinone. The reaction proceeds by oxidation of the two antimony atoms to the + V state in concert with reductive cleavage of the O2 molecule. As confirmed by 18O labeling experiments, the two resulting oxo units combine with the ortho-quinone to form an α,α,β,β-tetraolate ligand that bridges the two antimony(V) centers. This process, which has been studied both experimentally and computationally, involves the formation of asymmetric, mixed-valent derivatives featuring a stibine as well as a catecholatostiborane formed by oxidative addition of the quinone to only one of the antimony centers. Under aerobic conditions, the catecholatostiborane moiety reacts with O2 to form a semiquinone/peroxoantimony intermediate, as supported by NMR spectroscopy in the case of the dimethyldihydroacridine derivative. These intermediates swiftly evolve into the symmetrical bis(antimony(V)) α,α,β,β-tetraolate complexes via low barrier processes. Finally, the controlled protonolysis and reduction of the bis(antimony(V)) α,α,β,β-tetraolate complex based on the 9,9-dimethylxanthene platform have been investigated and shown to regenerate the starting distibine and the ortho-quinone. More importantly, these last reactions also produce two equivalents of water as the product of O2 reduction.

Distance-Triggered Distinct Aryl Migrations on Azidodiboranes

Derived from structurally similar precursors, two different azidodiboranes went through distinct aryl migration reactions triggered by different boron-boron separation distances. Biphenylene based diborane with a shorter boron-boron distance underwent heterolateral aryl migration to form a seven-membered azadiborepin, while xanthrene based diborane with a longer boron-boron distance afforded a stable bis-azidoborane scaffold. The pyrolysis of such a bis-azidoborane led to eight-membered oxazadiborocine through homolateral aryl migration and subsequent [3+2] cycloaddition. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations unveiled that the boron-boron separation distances were the intrinsic factors for the distinct migrations.

Activation of O2 across a C(sp3)-C(sp3) bond

The activation of atmospheric molecular dioxygen (O₂) is reported, which occurred across a C(sp³)-C(sp³) bond of a piperazine derivative without any catalyst at ambient conditions under the formation of 1,2,4,7-dioxadiazoctane, an 8-membered (larger-ring) cyclic organic peroxide.

Metal-Free Bond Activation by Carboranyl Diphosphines

We report metal-free bond activation by the carboranyl diphosphine 1-P^tBu₂-2-PⁱPr₂-C₂B₁₀H₁₀. This main group element system contains basic binding sites and possesses the ability to cycle through two-electron redox states. The reported reactions with selected main group hydrides and alcohols occur via the formal oxidation of the phosphine groups and concomitant reduction of the boron cage. These transformations, which are driven by the cooperation between the electron-donating exohedral substituents and the electron-accepting cluster, differ from those of "regular" phosphines and are reminiscent of oxidative addition to transition metal centers, thus representing a new approach to metal-free bond activation.

α,α'-Diamino-p-tetrafluoroquinodimethane: Stability of One- and Two-Electron Oxidized Species and Fixation of Molecular Oxygen

Herein, we report the synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of α,α'-diamino-p-tetrafluoroquinodimethane, a p-tetrafluorophenylene-bridged monosubstituted carbene-based Thiele's hydrocarbon A. The compound exhibits a reversible two-step one-electron oxidation with a marginally stable radical cation state B. The in situ formation of the radical cation could be confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Interestingly, α,α'-diamino-p-tetrafluoroquinodimethane fixates atmospheric oxygen to form a 16-membered peroxide-bridged macrocyclic compound C.

Controlling Oxygen Reduction Selectivity through Steric Effects: Electrocatalytic Two-Electron and Four-Electron Oxygen Reduction with Cobalt Porphyrin Atropisomers

Achieving a selective 2 e^- or 4 e^- oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is critical but challenging. Herein, we report controlling ORR selectivity of Co porphyrins by tuning only steric effects. We designed Co porphyrin 1 with meso-phenyls each bearing a bulky ortho-amido group. Due to the resulted steric hinderance, 1 has four atropisomers with similar electronic structures but dissimilar steric effects. Isomers αβαβ and αααα catalyze ORR with n=2.10 and 3.75 (n is the electron number transferred per O₂ ), respectively, but ααββ and αααβ show poor selectivity with n=2.89-3.10. Isomer αβαβ catalyzes 2 e^- ORR by preventing a bimolecular O₂ activation path, while αααα improves 4 e^- ORR selectivity by improving O₂ binding at its pocket, a feature confirmed by spectroscopy methods, including O K-edge near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure. This work represents an unparalleled example to improve 2 e^- and 4 e^- ORR by tuning only steric effects without changing molecular and electronic structures.

Trioxatriangulenium (TOTA+) as a robust carbon-based Lewis acid in frustrated Lewis pair chemistry

We report the reactivity between the water stable Lewis acidic trioxatriangulenium ion (TOTA+) and a series of Lewis bases such as phosphines and N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC). The nature of the Lewis acid-base interaction was analyzed via variable temperature (VT) NMR spectroscopy, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, UV-visible spectroscopy, and DFT calculations. While small and strongly nucleophilic phosphines, such as PMe3, led to the formation of a Lewis acid-base adduct, frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) were observed for sterically hindered bases such as P( t Bu)3. The TOTA+-P( t Bu)3 FLP was characterized as an encounter complex, and found to promote the heterolytic cleavage of disulfide bonds, formaldehyde fixation, dehydrogenation of 1,4-cyclohexadiene, heterolytic cleavage of the C-Br bonds, and interception of Staudinger reaction intermediates. Moreover, TOTA+ and NHC were found to first undergo single-electron transfer (SET) to form [TOTA]·[NHC]˙+, which was confirmed via electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, and subsequently form a [TOTA-NHC]+ adduct or a mixture of products depending the reaction conditions used.

Amino-1H-tetrazole-regulated high-density nitrogen-doped hollow carbon nanospheres for long-life Zn-air batteries

High-density nitrogen-doped porous carbon catalysts have been regarded as promising alternatives to precious metals in proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) and metal-air batteries based on the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). We herein synthesized high-density pyridinic and graphitic N-doped hollow carbon nanospheres (G&P N-HCS) using a high-yield amino-1H-tetrazole (ATTZ) via a self-sacrificial-template method. The synthesized G&P N-HCS shows a high N content (15.2 at%), in which pyridinic (Pr) and graphitic (Gr) N are highly reactive for the ORR catalysis. We found that the half-wave potential and limiting current density of G&P N-HCS are comparable to the state-of-the-art Pt/C, whereas its cyclic durability is much superior to that of Pt/C. Experimental results indicate that an optimal ratio (1 : 1) between Gr N and Pr N in G&P N-HCS exhibits the highest ORR performances, rather than Gr N-dominated N-HCS or Pr N-dominated N-HCS. Notably, N-HCS containing only Gr N and Pr N has poor catalytic performance for ORR in alkaline electrolytes. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations untangle the catalytic nature of Pr and Gr N and decipher the relations between the N type(s) and total N content required for the ORR catalysis. This study provides a new way to design efficient N-doped porous carbon-enriched active sites, and solves the cathode catalyst in the commercialization of PEMFC and metal-air batteries.

Persistent, highly localized, and tunable [4]helicene radicals

Persistent organic radicals have gained considerable attention in the fields of catalysis and materials science. In particular, helical molecules are of great interest for the development and application of novel organic radicals in optoelectronic and spintronic materials. Here we report the syntheses of easily tunable and stable neutral quinolinoacridine radicals under anaerobic conditions by chemical reduction of their quinolinoacridinium cation analogs. The structures of these [4]helicene radicals were determined by X-ray crystallography. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations, supported by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements, indicate that over 40% of spin density is located at the central carbon of our [4]helicene radicals regardless of their structural modifications. The localization of the charge promotes a reversible oxidation to the cation upon exposure to air. This unusual reactivity toward molecular oxygen was monitored via UV-Vis spectroscopy.
