Controlled Cyclopolymerization of 1,5-Hexadiynes to Give Narrow Band Gap Conjugated Polyacetylenes Containing Highly Strained Cyclobutenes

A Versatile Reversible, Degenerative Chain Transfer Mechanism for the Catalytic Living Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization

Most metathesis polymers based on norbornene derivatives carry a vinyl end group. Here we show that these vinyl end groups readily undergo a degenerative exchange of the terminal methylene unit in the presence of sub-stoichiometric amounts of a propagating metathesis polymer carrying a Grubbs ruthenium complex. We show that this degenerative exchange can be exploited in synthesizing ROMP polymers in a catalytic living fashion. Chain transfer agents based on styrene, or monosubstituted conjugated 1,3 diene derivatives are used as initiating sites for the catalytic living polymerization. Suitable derivatives of these chain transfer agents not only allow the linear living growth of polymers but also the synthesis of block copolymers from macro-initiators or star polymers from multi-functional chain transfer agents. This reversible exchange mechanism offers a cheaper, greener, and more sustainable alternative for the synthesis of living ROMP polymers compared to the classical synthetic route.

Designing Degradable Polymers from Tricycloalkenes via Complete Cascade Metathesis Polymerization

Cascade metathesis polymerization has been developed as a promising method to synthesize complex but well-defined polymers from monomers containing multiple reactive functional groups. However, this approach has been limited to the monomers involving simple alkene/alkyne moieties or produced mainly non-degradable polymers. In this study, we demonstrate a complete cascade ring-opening/ring-closing metathesis polymerization (RORCMP) using various tricycloalkenes and two strategies for the efficient degradation. Through rational design of tricycloalkene monomers, the structure and reactivity relationship was explored. For example, tricycloalkenes with trans configuration in the central ring enabled faster and better selective cascade RORCMP than the corresponding cis isomers. Also, a 4-substituted cyclopentene moiety in the monomers significantly enhanced the overall cascade RORCMP performance, with the maximum turnover number (TON) reaching almost 10,000 and molecular weight up to 170 kg/mol using an amide-containing monomer. Furthermore, we achieved one-shot cascade multiple olefin metathesis polymerization using tricycloalkenes and a diacrylate, to produce new highly A,B-alternating copolymers with full degradability. Lastly, we successfully designed xylose-based tricycloalkenes to give well-defined polymers that underwent ultra-fast and complete degradation under mild conditions.

Lead-free europium and ytterbium perovskites

Halide perovskite is a material with fantastic properties that could substantially impact next-generation optoelectronics. However, toxic Pb cations in the most excellent and stable perovskites have raised environmental concerns and hindered their commercialization. A new lead-free perovskite material needs to be discovered and address this issue. This research predicts that MAEuCl₃ and MAYbCl₃ are dynamic stable structures with wide band gap properties, making them promising lead-free perovskites. The study discusses these two new perovskites' XRD, electrical conductivity, and carrier mobility. Based on the properties of Eu²⁺ and Yb²⁺ perovskites, the iodide-based variant is suitable for device operation within the temperature range of 400 K to 600 K. The bromide-based perovskite is appropriate for temperatures ranging from 500 K to 700 K. In comparison, the chloride-based perovskite can be used for device operation in the higher temperature range of 800 K to 1100 K. Additionally, this research identifies the dynamic stability issue of lanthanide cations in halide perovskites, providing a reference for future lead-free perovskite applications.

Practical Route for Catalytic Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization

Norbornene derivatives are typical monomers for ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) for synthesizing highly functional polymers. However, the lack of catalytic methods, that is, the lack of readily available chain transfer agents (CTAs) for these monomers has been a significant cost limitation when large-scale syntheses are required. Here, we report commercially available styrene and its derivatives as efficient regioselective CTAs for the catalytic synthesis of metathesis polymers requiring up to 1000 times less ruthenium than in classical ROMP experiments. The molecular weight of the synthesized polymers was controlled by the monomer-to-CTA ratio. Low molecular weight ROMP polymers known for their antimicrobial properties were also synthesized on a gram scale in this report. Polymers were characterized by SEC, ¹H NMR spectroscopy, and isotopically resolved MALDI-TOF MS. This approach describes a greener, more cost-effective, and eco-friendly methodology for the preparation of metathesis-based materials on the multigram scale.

Photostable NIR-II Pigments from Extended Rylenecarboximides

A series of near-infrared (NIR) organic absorbers, named FNs and FPs, have been obtained with absorption maxima from 870 nm to 1100 nm and thus falling into the attractive second near-infrared region (NIR-II). The synthesis of their extended aromatic cores utilized an initial aryl-amination between 4-aminonaphthalene-1,8-dicarboximide (NMI-NH2 ) or 9-aminoperylene-3,4-dicarboximide (PMI-NH2 ) with chloro-substituted 9,10-anthraquinones followed by a novel base-induced cyclodehydrogenation. A NIR-II pigment, compound FPP, was obtained through de-alkylation of a soluble precursor. The synthesis of this photostable pigment is high-yielding and avoids column chromatographic purification which is important for many applications.

Controlled Alternating Metathesis Copolymerization of Terminal Alkynes

Terminal alkynes display high reactivity toward Ru-carbene metathesis catalysts. However, the formation of a less reactive bulky carbene hinders their homopolymerization. Simultaneously, the higher reactivity of alkynes does not allow efficient cross propagation with sterically less-hindered cycloalkene monomers, resulting in inefficient copolymerization. Nonetheless, terminal alkynes undergo rapid cross-metathesis with vinyl ethers. Therefore, an efficient cross propagation can be achieved with terminal alkynes and cyclic enol ether monomers. Here, we show that terminal alkyne derivatives can be copolymerized in an alternating fashion with 2,3-dihydrofuran using Grubbs' third generation catalyst (G3). A linear relationship of the number-average molecular weight versus monomer to initiator ratio and block copolymer synthesis confirmed a controlled copolymerization. The SEC and NMR analyses of the synthesized copolymers confirmed the excellent control over molecular weight and exclusive alternating nature of the copolymer. The regioselective chain transfer of G3 to vinyl ether and the high reactivity of the Fischer-type Ru carbene toward terminal alkynes was also exploited for polymer conjugation. Finally, the presence of an acid labile backbone functionality in the synthesized alternating copolymers allowed complete degradation of the copolymer within a short time interval which was confirmed by SEC analyses.

Functional polydiynes prepared by metathesis cyclopolymerization of 1,7-dihalogen-1,6-heptadiyne derivatives

The MCP route used for the polymerization of 1,6-heptadiynes was successfully applied to the polymerization of 1,7-dihalogen-1,6-heptadiynes, and the target polymers were obtained in high yield with high molecular weight and unique UCST behavior.

Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization of a Macrobicyclic Olefin Bearing a Sacrificial Silyloxide Bridge

Ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) has been regarded as a powerful tool for sequence-controlled polymerization. However, the traditional entropy-driven ROMP of macrocyclic olefins suffers from the lack of ring strain and poor regioselectivity, whereas the relay-ring-closing metathesis polymerization inevitably brings some unnecessary auxiliary structure into each monomeric unit. We developed a macrobicyclic olefin system bearing a sacrificial silyloxide bridge on the α,β'-positions of the double bond as a new class of sequence-defined monomer for regioselective ROMP. The monomeric sequence information is implanted in the macro-ring, while the small ring, a 3-substituted cyclooctene structure with substantial ring tension, can provide not only narrow polydispersity, but also high regio-/stereospecificity. Besides, the silyloxide bridge can be sacrificially cleaved by desilylation and deoxygenation reactions to provide clean-structured, non-auxiliaried polymers.

Polyacetylene Revisited: A Computational Study of the Molecular Engineering of N-type Polyacetylene

The development of stable and highly conductive polymers, particularly n-type materials, remains an outstanding challenge in organic electronics. N-doped polyacetylene has long been studied as a highly conductive organic n-type material but suffers from extremely poor stability. Herein, we use DFT to model a series of n-doped polyacetylene derivatives, which have been functionalized with a range of electron-withdrawing substituents, with the goal of identifying attractive candidates for synthesis. We analyze the predicted molecular orbital energies, polymer planarity, and delocalization of charge carriers along the polymer backbone. In so doing, we develop key insights about the ideal substituents for both stable and highly conductive polyacetylene derivatives. This work will inform the modern synthesis and development of new polyacetylene derivatives. Beyond this, the work identifies a variety of new materials that have not yet been synthesized and should be good candidates for emerging optoelectronic applications including soft thermoelectrics, bioelectronics, and flexible device technologies.

Cyclic polyacetylene

Here we demonstrate the synthesis of cyclic polyacetylene (c-PA), or [∞]annulene, via homogeneous tungsten-catalysed polymerization of acetylene. Unique to the cyclic structure and evidence for its topology, the c-PA contains >99% trans double bonds, even when synthesized at -94 °C. High activity with low catalyst loadings allows for the synthesis of temporarily soluble c-PA, thus opening the opportunity to derivatize the polymer in solution. Absolute evidence for the cyclic topology comes from atomic force microscopy images of bottlebrush derivatives generated from soluble c-PA. Now available in its cyclic form, initial characterization studies are presented to elucidate the topological differences compared with traditionally synthesized linear polyacetylene. One advantage to the synthesis of c-PA is the direct synthesis of the trans-transoid isomer. Low defect concentrations, low soliton concentration, and relatively high conjugation lengths are characteristics of c-PA. Efficient catalysis permits the rapid synthesis of lustrous flexible thin films of c-PA, and when doped with I₂, they are highly conductive (398 (±76) Ω^-1 cm^-1).

Selective Ring-Opening Allene Metathesis: Polymerization or Ruthenium Vinylidene Formation

Selective ring-opening allene metathesis polymerization (ROAlMP) and ruthenium vinylidene formation from 1,2-cyclononadiene (1) by simple catalyst selection are discussed. Grubbs second-generation catalyst (G2) favors the formation of an alkylidene leading to the ROAlMP of (1). Grubbs first-generation catalyst (G1) favors vinylidene formation and prevents the homopolymerization of (1) even at elevated temperatures. Isolation and characterization of poly(1) by NMR analysis and MALDI-TOF confirms the generation of a well-defined polyallene that exhibits good thermal stability (T_D ca. 390 °C) and fluorescent properties. Ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of a highly strained norbornene derivative (NBE-ⁱPr) at 80 °C using the ruthenium vinylidene generated from (1) is also investigated. The discovery of ROAlMP allows for the simple access of well-defined polyallenes from commercially available catalysts and will ultimately guide structure-property determinations of polyallenes.

Ionic polyacetylene with a unique nanostructure and high stability by metathesis cyclopolymerization-induced self-assembly

Conjugated ionic polyacetylene was synthesized by metathesis cyclopolymerization, and self-assembled into various nanostructures, which exhibited high thermal and oxidative stability.
