Buffered Coordination Modulation as a Means of Controlling Crystal Morphology and Molecular Diffusion in an Anisotropic Metal-Organic Framework

Isoreticular Curves: A Theory of Capillary Condensation To Model Water Sorption within Microporous Sorbents

Metal-organic frameworks have gained traction as leading materials for water sorption applications due to precise chemical tunability of their well-ordered pores. These applications include atmospheric water capture, heat pumps, desiccation, desalination, humidity control, and thermal batteries. However, the relationships between the framework pore structure and the measurable water sorption properties, namely critical relative humidity for condensation, maximal capacity, and pore size or temperature for the onset of hysteresis, have not been clearly delineated. Herein, we precisely formulate these relationships by application of the theory of capillary condensation and macroscopic thermodynamic models to a large data set of MOF water isotherms. These relationships include a concept termed isoreticular curves that relates the critical pressure for pore condensation (α), gravimetric capacity (Qmax), and hydrophilicity (the Gibbs free energy for binding water, ΔG) as Qmax = a1(ΔG/ln α)2 + a2(ΔG/ln α), with constants a1 and a2 dependent upon the density and volume occupied by the linker and secondary building unit, and framework topology. Through this analysis, we propose guidelines for the maximization of sorption capacity at a given relative humidity with minimal hysteresis and discuss the theoretical limits for capacity at low relative humidity. This model provides an explanation for the lack of high-capacity frameworks at low relative humidity, as increasing pore size also causes an increase in relative humidity. We propose a loose upper bound of Qmax = -0.25(1/ln α)2 - 1.75(1/ln α) for the limit of maximal capacity at a given relative humidity in the dry regime. These guidelines are consequential for the design of new materials for water sorption applications.

Superlong Metal-Organic Framework Micro-/Nanofibers for Selective Vitamin Absorption

Superlong MOF-74-type micro/nanofibers, which have aspect ratios much higher than 200, are synthesized via nanoparticulate MOF-mediated recrystallization. Co-MOF-74 microfibers have high crystallinity, whereas Co-MOF-74-II nanofibers are composed of nanocrystals and amorphous phases, even though they have nanofibrous morphology. Both MOFs consist of plenty of micropores with diameters in the range of 1.0 to 2.0 nm, and they exhibit high thermal stability with a decomposition temperature higher than 260.0 °C. The MOFs are demonstrated for selective absorption of some vitamins including riboflavin, folic acid, and 5-methyltetrahydrofolate. Co-MOF-74-II nanofibers can efficiently absorb riboflavin and folic acid from their aqueous solution with absorption percentages approaching 90.0%, and they have enhanced capability for absorbing tocopherol in methanol. The micro/nanofibrous morphology, together with the capability for selective vitamin absorption, makes the novel MOFs highly promising for applications in micro-solid-phase extraction.

Surfactant-Mediated Crystalline Structure Evolution Enabling the Ultrafast Green Synthesis of Bismuth-MOF in Aqueous Condition

Green synthesis of stable metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with permanent and highly ordered porosity at room temperature without needing toxic and harmful solvents and long-term high-temperature reactions is crucial for sustainable production. Herein, a rapid and environmentally friendly synthesis strategy is reported to synthesize the complex topological bismuth-based-MOFs (Bi-MOFs), [Bi9(C9H3O6)9(H2O)9] (denoted CAU-17), in water under ambient conditions by surfactant-mediated sonochemical approach, which could also be applicable to other MOFs. This strategy explores using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) amphiphilic molecules as structure-inducing agents to control the removal of non-coordinated water (dehydration) and enhance the degree of deprotonation of the ligands, thereby regulating the coordination and crystallization in aqueous solutions. In addition, another two new strategies for synthesizing CAU-17 by crystal reconstruction and one-step synthesis in binary solvents are provided, and the solvent-induced synthesis mechanism of CAU-17 is studied. The as-prepared CAU-17 presents a competitive iodine capture capability and effective delivery of the antiarrhythmic drug procainamide (PA) for enteropatia due to the broad pH tolerance and the unique phosphate-responsive destruction in the intestine. The findings will provide valuable ideas for the follow-up study of surfactant-assisted aqueous synthesis of MOFs and their potential applications.

Factors Controlling Complex Morphologies of Isomorphous Metal-Organic Frameworks

We demonstrate here how nitrate salts of bivalent copper, nickel, cobalt, and manganese, along with an achiral organic ligand, assemble into various structures such as symmetrical double-decker flowers, smooth elongated hexagonal bipyramids, and hexagonal prisms. Large morphological changes occur in these structures because of different metal cations, although they maintain isomorphous hexagonal crystallographic structures. Metal cations with stronger coordination to ligands (Cu and Ni) tend to form uniform crystals with unusual shapes, whereas weaker coordinating metal cations (Mn and Co) produce crystals with more regular hexagonal morphologies. The unusual flower-like crystals formed with copper nitrate have two pairs of six symmetrical petals with hexagonal convex centers. The texture of the petals indicates dendritic growth. Two different types of morphologies were formed by using different copper nitrate-to-ligand ratios. An excess of the metal salt results in uniform and hexagonal crystals having a narrow size distribution, whereas the use of an excess of ligand results in double-decker morphologies. Mechanistically, an intermediate structure was observed with slightly concave facets and a domed center. Such structures most likely play a key role in the formation of double-decker crystals that can be formed by fusion processes. The coordination chemistry results in isostructural chiral frameworks consisting of two types of continuous helical channels. Four pyridine units from four separate ligands are coordinated to the metal center in a plane having a chiral (propeller-type) arrangement. The individual double-decker flower crystals are homochiral and a batch consists of crystals having both handedness.

Structural Compromise Between Conflicted Spatial-Arrangements of Two Linkers in Metal-Organic Frameworks

The structural control of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is essential for the development of superlative MOFs because the structural features of MOFs and their components play a critical role in determining their properties, and ultimately, their applications. The best components to endow the desired properties for MOFs are available via the appropriate choice from many existing chemicals or synthesizing new ones. However, to date, considerably less information exists regarding fine-tuning the MOF structures. Herein, a strategy for tuning MOF structures by merging two MOF structures into a single MOF, is demonstrated. Depending on the incorporated amounts and relative contributions of the two coexisting organic linkers, benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate (BDC^2- ) and naphthalene-1,4-dicarboxylate (NDC^2- ), which have conflicting spatial-arrangement preferences within an MOF structure, MOFs are rationally designed to have a Kagomé or rhombic lattice. In particular, MOFs with rhombic lattices are constructed to have specific lattice angles by compromising the optimal structural arrangements between the two mixed linkers. The relative contributions of the two linkers during MOF construction determine the final MOF structures, and the competitive influence between BDC^2- and NDC^2- is effectively regulated to produce specific MOF structures with controlled lattices.

Effect of modulator ligands on the growth of Co2(dobdc) nanorods

Control over the size, shape, uniformity, and external surface chemistry of metal-organic framework nanocrystals is important for a wide range of applications. Here, we investigate how monotopic modulators that mimic the coordination mode of native bridging ligands affect the growth of anisotropic Co2(dobdc) (dobdc4- = 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid) nanorods. Through a combination of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) studies, nanorod diameter was found to be strongly correlated to the acidity of the modulator and to the degree of modulator incorporation into the nanorod structure. Notably, highly acidic modulators allowed for the preparation of sub-10 nm nanorods, a previously elusive size regime for the M2(dobdc) family. More broadly, this study provides new insights into the mechanism of modulated growth of metal-organic framework nanoparticles.

Crystal Face Dominated Fabrication of Prussian Blue Analogue with Oriented Growth and Naturally Nonpreferred Unsaturated Coordination Center

Defects, such as unsaturated coordination centers and vacancies, can fundamentally change materials' inherent properties and growth habits. The development of defect engineering has promoted the application of many technologies, but it is still a great challenge to selectively manufacture defect sites in existing material systems. It is shown here that in situ site-directed tailoring of metal sites in Prussian blue analogs (PBA) can be achieved according to the reducibility differences of different metal atoms, forming naturally nonpreferred unsaturated coordination centers. Meanwhile, the in situ capture of small reducing molecule can realize site-directed tailoring of crystal facets during crystal growth and results in oriented 1D growth. As an oxygen evolution reaction catalyst, the resulted PBA with the nonpreferred unsaturated coordination centers shows a low overpotential of 239 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 in alkali, superior to the original PBAs and the previously reported defective PBA derivatives, which can be ascribed to the unsaturated coordination active center and the unique 1D structure. This work opens up opportunities for producing naturally nonpreferred unsaturated coordination center in nanomaterials for broad applications.

Conceptual and Practical Aspects of Metal-Organic Frameworks for Solid-Gas Reactions

The presence of site-isolated and well-defined metal sites has enabled the use of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as catalysts that can be rationally modulated. Because MOFs can be addressed and manipulated through molecular synthetic pathways, they are chemically similar to molecular catalysts. They are, nevertheless, solid-state materials and therefore can be thought of as privileged solid molecular catalysts that excel in applications involving gas-phase reactions. This contrasts with homogeneous catalysts, which are overwhelmingly used in the solution phase. Herein, we review theories dictating gas phase reactivity within porous solids and discuss key catalytic gas-solid reactions. We further treat theoretical aspects of diffusion within confined pores, the enrichment of adsorbates, the types of solvation spheres that a MOF might impart on adsorbates, definitions of acidity/basicity in the absence of solvent, the stabilization of reactive intermediates, and the generation and characterization of defect sites. The key catalytic reactions we discuss broadly include reductive reactions (olefin hydrogenation, semihydrogenation, and selective catalytic reduction), oxidative reactions (oxygenation of hydrocarbons, oxidative dehydrogenation, and carbon monoxide oxidation), and C-C bond forming reactions (olefin dimerization/polymerization, isomerization, and carbonylation reactions).

Evaluating Solvothermal and Mechanochemical Routes towards the Metal-Organic Framework Mg2(m-dobdc)

Metal-organic frameworks bearing coordinatively unsaturated Mg(II) sites are promising materials for gas storage, chemical separations, and drug delivery due to their low molecular weights and lack of toxicity. However, there remains a limited number of such MOFs reported in the literature. Herein, we investigate the gas sorption properties of the understudied framework Mg₂(m-dobdc) (dobdc^4- = 4,6-dioxido-1,3-benzenedicarboxylate) synthesized under both solvothermal and mechanochemical conditions. Both materials are found to be permanently porous, as confirmed by 77 K N₂ adsorption measurements. In particular, Mg₂(m-dobdc) synthesized under mechanochemical conditions using exogenous organic base displays one of the highest capacities reported to date (6.14 mmol/g) for CO₂ capture in a porous solid under simulated coal flue gas conditions (150 mbar, 40 °C). As such, mechanochemically synthesized Mg₂(m-dobdc) represents a promising new framework for applications requiring high gas adsorption capacities in a porous solid.

Linker Scissoring Strategy Enables Precise Shaping of Metal-Organic Frameworks for Chromatographic Separation

Precise shaping of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is significant in both fundamental coordination chemistry and practical applications, such as catalysis, separation, and biomedicine. Herein, we demonstrated a linker scissoring strategy for precisely shaping MOFs through surface conformational pairing. In this strategy, the bidentate linkers which were designed according to the original tetratopic ligands and the coordination environment of MOF surfaces, were utilized as the covering agents. The shape of these covering agents and the surface conformation of metals onto MOFs restricted them to coordinate on specific MOF facets thus precisely controlling the shape of the MOFs. Different shapes of PCN-608 from nanoplate (PCN-NP) to nanorod (PCN-NR) have been targeted by adding different bidentate linkers. The universality of this strategy was demonstrated by controlling the shapes of the NU-MOFs from nanoplate to nanorod. This strategy provides a new guiding principle to synthesize MOF nanocrystals with controlled shapes.

Enhancing the energy storage performances of metal-organic frameworks by controlling microstructure

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are among the most promising materials for next-generation energy storage systems. However, the impact of particle morphology on the energy storage performances of these frameworks is poorly understood. To address this, here we use coordination modulation to synthesise three samples of the conductive MOF Cu₃(HHTP)₂ (HHTP = 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene) with distinct microstructures. Supercapacitors assembled with these samples conclusively demonstrate that sample microstructure and particle morphology have a significant impact on the energy storage performances of MOFs. Samples with 'flake-like' particles, with a pore network comprised of many short pores, display superior capacitive performances than samples with either 'rod-like' or strongly agglomerated particles. The results of this study provide a target microstructure for conductive MOFs for energy storage applications.

Straightforward Mechanosynthesis of a Phase-Pure Interpenetrated MOF-5 Bearing a Size-Matching Tetrazine-Based Linker

The archetypal metal-organic framework-5 (MOF-5 or IRMOF-1) has been explored as a benchmark sorbent material with untapped potential to be studied in the capture and storage of gases and chemical confinement. Several derivatives of this framework have been prepared using the multivariate (MTV) strategy through mixing size-matching linkers to isolate, for example, MIXMOFs that outperform same-linker congeners when employed as gas reservoirs. Herein, we describe a straightforward protocol that uses mechanosynthesis (solvent-free grinding) followed by mild activation in dimethylformamide (DMF)/CHCl₃ (40 °C and ambient pressure) to synthesize a functional phase-pure interpenetrated MOF-5 (int-MOF-5) bearing the size-matching 1,4-benzene dicarboxylate (BDC) and 1,2,4,5-tetrazine-3,6-dicarboxylate (TZDC) linkers in the backbone of the interpenetrated MIXMOF. We found that the grinding involving a mixture of H₂TZDC and H₂BDC in a 1:4 ratio (20% of H₂TZDC) in the presence of zinc(II) acetate yields a crystalline solid that upon activation forms a phase-pure int-MOF-5 herein referred to as 20%TZDC-MOF-5. The crystalline phase, thermal stability, and porous structure of 20%TZDC-MOF-5 were thoroughly characterized, and the gas adsorption performance of the MIXMOF was investigated through the isotherms of N₂ and H₂ at 77 K and CO₂ at 273 and 296 K. The pore size distribution for 20%TZDC-MOF-5 was found to be very similar to that determined using single crystals of the same-linker int-MOF-5. The presence of TZDC in the MIXMOF led to a slight increase in the uptake values for both H₂ and CO₂, suggesting that beneficial interactions take place. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report presenting a suitable protocol to yield a functionalized int-MOF-5 as a promising means of synergistically fine-tuning the confinement of small target molecules such as CO₂ and H₂.

Cooperative Assembly of 2D-MOF Nanoplatelets into Hierarchical Carpets and Tubular Superstructures for Advanced Air Filtration

Clean air is an indispensable prerequisite for human health. The capture of small toxic molecules requires the development of advanced materials for air filtration. Two-dimensional nanomaterials offer highly accessible surface areas but for real-world applications their assembly into well-defined hierarchical mesostructures is essential. DUT-134(Cu) ([Cu₂ (dttc)₂ ]_n , dttc=dithieno[3,2-b : 2',3'-d]thiophene-2,6-dicarboxylate]) is a metal-organic framework forming platelet-shaped particles, that can be organized into complex structures, such as millimeter large free-standing layers (carpets) and tubes. The structured material demonstrates enhanced accessibility of open metal sites and significantly enhanced H₂ S adsorption capacity in gas filtering tests compared with traditional bulk analogues.

Rapid Generation of Metal-Organic Framework Phase Diagrams by High-Throughput Transmission Electron Microscopy

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) constructed from Zr₆ nodes and tetratopic carboxylate linkers display high structural diversity and complexity in which various crystal topologies can result from identical building units. To determine correlations between MOF topologies and experimental parameters, such as solvent choice or modulator identity and concentration, we demonstrate the rapid generation of phase diagrams for Zr₆-MOFs with 1,4-dibromo-2,3,5,6-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)benzene linkers under a variety of conditions. We have developed a full set of methods for high-throughput transmission electron microscopy (TEM), including automated sample preparation and data acquisition, to accelerate MOF characterization. The use of acetic acid as a modulator yields amorphous, NU-906, NU-600, and mixed-phase structures depending on the ratio of N,N-dimethylformamide to N,N-diethylformamide solvent and the quantity of the modulator. Notably, the use of formic acid as a modulator enables direct control of crystal growth along the c direction through variation of the modulator quantity, thus realizing aspect ratio control of NU-1008 crystals with different catalytic hydrolysis performance toward a nerve agent simulant.

Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) Morphology Control by Design

Exerting morphological control over metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is critical for determining their catalytic performance and to optimize their packing behavior in areas from separations to fuel gas storage. A mechanism-based approach to tailor the morphology of MOFs is introduced and experimentally demonstrated for five cubic Zn₄ O-based MOFs. This methodology provides three key features: 1) computational screening for selection of appropriate additives to change crystal morphology based on knowledge of the crystal structure alone; 2) use of additive to metal cluster geometric relationships to achieve morphologies expressing desired crystallographic facets; 3) potential for suppression of interpenetration for certain phases.

Unsaturated NiII Centers Mediated the Coordination Activation of Benzylamine for Enhancing Photocatalytic Activity over Ultrathin Ni MOF-74 Nanosheets

Creating accessible unsaturated active sites in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) holds great promise for developing highly efficient catalysts. Herein, ultrathin Ni MOF-74 nanosheets (NMNs) with high-density coordinatively unsaturated Ni^II centers are prepared as a photocatalyst. The results of in situ ATR-IR, Raman, UV-vis DRS, and XPS suggest that abundant Ni^II centers can act as the active sites for boosting benzylamine (BA) activation via forming -Ni-NH₂- coordination intermediates. The generation of coordination intermediates assists the transfer of photo-generated holes to BA molecules for producing BA cation free radicals, better impelling the breaking of N-H bonds and the photooxidation of BA molecules. The photo-generated electrons further activate O₂ molecules to O₂^•- radicals for triggering the reaction. The experiments reveal that the coordination activation of BA molecules may be a rate-determining step on NMNs rather than the adsorption and activation of O₂ molecules. Moreover, NMNs possess a better ability for the separation of photo-generated carriers in comparison with bulk Ni MOF-74 (NMBs). As a result, NMNs achieve a kinetic rate constant of 0.538 h^-1 for the photocatalytic oxidative coupling of BA under visible light, about 50 times higher than that of NMBs (0.0011 h^-1). Finally, a probable synergetic catalytic mechanism with coordination activation and photocatalysis is discussed on a molecular level. This study not only highlights the importance of coordination activation for heterogeneous photocatalysis but also affords an inspiration for building ultrathin MOF nanosheets.

Pathway-Dependent Coordination Networks: Crystals versus Films

We demonstrate the formation of both metallo-organic crystals and nanoscale films that have entirely different compositions and structures despite using the same set of starting materials. This difference is the result of an unexpected cation exchange process. The reaction of an iron polypyridyl complex with a copper salt by diffusion of one solution into another resulted in iron-to-copper exchange, concurrent ligand rearrangement, and the formation of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). This observation shows that polypyridyl complexes can be used as expendable precursors for the growth of MOFs. In contrast, alternative depositions of the iron polypyridyl complex with a copper salt by automated spin coating on conductive metal oxides resulted in the formation of electrochromic coatings, and the structure and redox properties of the iron complex were retained. The possibility to form such different networks from the same set of molecular building blocks by “in solution” versus “on surface” coordination chemistry broadens the synthetic space to design functional materials.
