Block-Random Copolymer-Micellization-Mediated Formation of Polymeric Patches on Gold Nanoparticles

Surface Orthogonal Patterning and Bidirectional Self-Assembly of Nanoparticles Tethered by V-Shaped Diblock Copolymers

We investigated the surface orthogonal patterning and bidirectional self-assembly of binary hairy nanoparticles (NPs) constructed by uniformly tethering a single NP with multiple V-shaped AB diblock copolymers using Brownian dynamics simulations in a poor solvent. At low concentration, the chain collapse and microphase separation of binary polymer brushes can lead to the patterning of the NP surface into A- and B-type orthogonal patches with various numbers of domains (valency), n = 1-6, that adopt spherical, linear, triangular, tetrahedral, square pyramidal, and pentagonal pyramidal configurations. There is a linear relationship between the valency and the average ratio of NP diameter to the polymers' unperturbed root-mean-square end-to-end distance for the corresponding valency. The linear slope depends on the grafting density and is independent of the interaction parameters between polymers. At high concentration, the orthogonal patch NPs serve as building blocks and exhibit directional attractions by overlapping the same type of domains, resulting in self-assembly into a series of fascinating architectures depending on the valency and polymer length. Notably, the 2-valent orthogonal patch NPs have the bidirectional bonding ability to form the two-dimensional (2D) square NP arrays by two distinct pathways. Simultaneously patching A and B blocks enables the one-step formation of 2D square arrays via bidirectional growth, whereas step-by-step patching causes the directional formation of 1D chains followed by 2D square arrays. Moreover, the gap between NPs in the 2D square arrays is related to the polymer length but independent of the NP diameter. These 2D square NP arrays are of significant value in practical applications such as integrated circuit manufacturing and nanotechnology.

Local Confinement Effects of Block Copolymers Driving Self-Assembly of Nanoparticles into Discrete Pancake-Shaped Superlattices

The utilization of polymer conformations to construct a variety of superlattices is a common method within the field. However, this technique often results in only long-range ordering rather than the formation of distinct superlattices. In this study, a well-organized array of discrete pancake-shaped superlattices (DPSs) is successfully obtained through the utilization of air-liquid interface self-assembly, facilitated by the confined environment created by a block copolymer. It is crucial to note that both the self-assembly behavior and resulting morphologies of the DPSs can be precisely tuned by adjusting several experimental parameters, most notably the concentration and molecular architecture of the block copolymers. Furthermore, this work provides valuable insights into the formation processes and mechanisms underpinning the DPSs. The approach described here is both straightforward and efficacious, establishing a strong foundation for subsequent research and the development of non-close-packed superlattice structures.

Symmetry-Breaking of Nanoparticle Surface Function Via Conformal DNA Design

Asymmetric surface functionalization of complex nanoparticles to control their directional self-assembly remains a considerable challenge. Here, we demonstrated a conformal DNA design strategy for flexible remodeling of the surface of complex nanoparticles, taking Au nanobipyramids (AuNBPs) as a model. We sheathed one or both tips of AuNBPs into conformal DNA origami with an exceptionally accurate orientation control. Such asymmetrically and symmetrically distributed surface patches possess regioselective, sequence, and site-specific DNA binding capabilities. As a result, we realized a series of prototypical multicomponent "colloidal molecules" made of AuNBPs and Au nanospheres (AuNSs) with defined directionality and number of "bonding valence" as well as 1D and 3D hierarchical assemblies, e.g., inverse core-satellites of AuNBPs and AuNSs, side-by-side and tip-to-tip linear assemblies of AuNBPs, and 3D helical superstructures of AuNBPs with tunable twists. These findings inspire new opportunities for nanoparticle surface engineering and the high-order self-assembly of nanoarchitectures with higher complexity and broadened functionalities.

Anisotropic Multitentacle Janus Particles Synthesized by Selective Asymmetric Growth

Anisotropic colloidal particles with asymmetric morphology possess functionally rich heterogeneous structures, thus offering potential for intricate superstructures or nanodevices. However, it is a challenge to achieve controlled asymmetric surface partitioned growth. In this work, an innovative strategy is developed based on the selective adsorption and growth of emulsion droplets onto different regions of object which is controlled by wettability. It is found that the emulsion droplets can selectively adsorb on the hydrophilic surface but not the hydrophobic one, and further form asymmetric tentacle by the interfacial sol-gel process along its trajectory. Janus particles with an anisotropic shape and multitentacle structure are achieved via integration of emulsion droplet (soft) and seed (hard) templates. The size and number of tentacles exhibit tunability mediated by soft and hard templates, respectively. This general strategy can be expanded to a variety of planar substrates or curved particles, further confirming the correlation between tentacle growth and Brownian motion. Most interestingly, it can be employed to selectively modify one region of surface partitioned particles to achieve an ABC three-component Janus structure.

Photo-Induced Self-assembly of Copolymer-Capped Nanoparticles into Colloidal Molecules

Colloidal molecules (CMs) are precisely defined assemblies of nanoparticles (NPs) that mimic the structure of real molecules, but externally programming the precise self-assembly of CMs is still challenging. In this work, we show that the photo-induced self-assembly of complementary copolymer-capped binary NPs can be precisely controlled to form clustered ABx or linear (AB)y CMs at high yield (x is the coordination number of NP-Bs, and y is the repeating unit number of AB clusters). Under UV light irradiation, photolabile p-methoxyphenacyl groups of copolymers on NP-A*s are converted to carboxyl groups (NP-A), which react with tertiary amines of copolymers on NP-B to trigger the directional NP bonding. The x value of ABx can be precisely controlled between 1 and 3 by varying the irradiation duration and hence the amount of carboxyl groups generated on NP-As. Moreover, when NP-A* and NP-B are irradiated after mixing, the assembly process generates AB clusters or linear (AB)y structures with alternating sequence of the binary NPs. This assembly approach offers a simple yet non-invasive way to externally regulate the formation of various CMs on demand without the need of redesigning the surface chemistry of NPs for use in drug delivery, diagnostics, optoelectronics, and plasmonic devices.

Molecular Engineering of Colloidal Atoms

Creation of architectures with exquisite hierarchies actuates the germination of revolutionized functions and applications across a wide range of fields. Hierarchical self-assembly of colloidal particles holds the promise for materialized realization of structural programing and customizing. This review outlines the general approaches to organize atom-like micro- and nanoparticles into prescribed colloidal analogs of molecules by exploiting diverse interparticle driving motifs involving confining templates, interactive surface ligands, and flexible shape/surface anisotropy. Furthermore, the self-regulated/adaptive co-assembly of simple unvarnished building blocks is discussed to inspire new designs of colloidal assembly strategies.

Polymer N-Heterocyclic Carbene (NHC) Ligands for Silver Nanoparticles

Polymer N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are a class of robust surface ligands to provide superior colloidal stability for metal nanoparticles (NPs) under various harsh conditions. We report a general method to prepare polymeric NHCs and demonstrate that these polymer NHC-AgNPs are stable against oxidative etching and show high peroxidase activity. We prepared three imidazolium-terminated poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), polystyrene (PS), and poly(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethyl methacrylate) (PMEO₂MA) through atom-transfer radical polymerization with an imidazole-containing initiator. The imidazolium end group was further converted to NHC-Ag(I) in the presence of Ag₂O at room temperature. Polymer NHC-Ag(I) can transmetalate to AgNPs through ligand exchange at the interface of oil/water within 2 min. All the three polymers can modify metal NPs, such as AgNPs, Ag nanowires, and AuNPs, providing excellent thermal, oxidative, and chemical stabilities for AgNPs. As an example, in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, AgNPs modified by polymer NHCs were resistant against oxidative etching with a rate of ∼700 times slower than those grafted with thiolates. AgNPs modified by polymer NHCs also showed higher peroxidase activity, 4 times more active than those capped by citrate and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and 2 times more active than those with polymer thiolate. Our studies demonstrate a great potential of using polymer NHCs to stabilize metallic NPs for various applications.

Symmetry-breaking in patch formation on triangular gold nanoparticles by asymmetric polymer grafting

Synthesizing patchy particles with predictive control over patch size, shape, placement and number has been highly sought-after for nanoparticle assembly research, but is fraught with challenges. Here we show that polymers can be designed to selectively adsorb onto nanoparticle surfaces already partially coated by other chains to drive the formation of patchy nanoparticles with broken symmetry. In our model system of triangular gold nanoparticles and polystyrene-b-polyacrylic acid patch, single- and double-patch nanoparticles are produced at high yield. These asymmetric single-patch nanoparticles are shown to assemble into self-limited patch‒patch connected bowties exhibiting intriguing plasmonic properties. To unveil the mechanism of symmetry-breaking patch formation, we develop a theory that accurately predicts our experimental observations at all scales—from patch patterning on nanoparticles, to the size/shape of the patches, to the particle assemblies driven by patch‒patch interactions. Both the experimental strategy and theoretical prediction extend to nanoparticles of other shapes such as octahedra and bipyramids. Our work provides an approach to leverage polymer interactions with nanoscale curved surfaces for asymmetric grafting in nanomaterials engineering.

Synthesis of Patchy Nanoparticles with Symmetry Resembling Polar Small Molecules

Patchy nanoparticles (NPs) show many important applications, especially for constructing structurally complex colloidal materials, but existing synthetic strategies generate patchy NPs with limited types of symmetry. This article describes a versatile copolymer ligand-based strategy for the scalable synthesis of uniform Au-(SiO₂ )_x patchy NPs (x is the patch number and 1 ≤ x ≤ 5) with unusual symmetry at high yield. The hydrolysis and condensation of tetraethyl orthosilicate on block-random copolymer ligands induces the segregation of copolymers on gold NPs (AuNPs) and hence governs the structure and distribution of silica patches formed on the AuNPs. The resulting patchy NPs possess unique configurations where the silica patches are symmetrically arranged at one side of the core NP, resembling the geometry of polar small molecules. The number, size, and morphology of silica patches, as well as the spacing between the patches and the AuNP can be precisely tuned by tailoring copolymer architectures, grafting density of copolymers, and the size of AuNPs. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the Au-(SiO₂ )_x patchy NPs can assemble into more complex superstructures through directional interaction between the exposed Au surfaces. This work offers new opportunities of designing next-generation complex patchy NPs for applications in such as biomedicines, self-assembly, and catalysis.

Recent developments in the use of gold and silver nanoparticles in biomedicine

Gold and silver nanoparticles (NPs) are widely used in the biomedical research both in the therapeutic and the sensing/diagnostics fronts. Both metals share some common optical properties with surface plasmon resonance being the most widely exploited property in therapeutics and diagnostics. Au NPs exhibit excellent light‐to‐heat conversion efficiencies and hence have found applications primarily in precision oncology, while Ag NPs have excellent antibacterial properties which can be harnessed in biomaterials' design. Both metals constitute excellent biosensing platforms owing to their plasmonic properties and are now routinely used in various optical platforms. The utilization of Au and Ag NPs in the COVID‐19 pandemic was rapidly expanded mostly in biosensing and point‐of‐care platforms and to some extent in therapeutics. In this review article, the main physicochemical properties of Au and Ag NPs are discussed with selective examples from the recent literature.

Polymer brush-based nanostructures: from surface self-assembly to surface co-assembly

Surface structures play an important role in the practical applications of materials. The synthesis of polymer brushes on a solid surface has emerged as an effective tool for tuning surface properties. The fabrication of polymer brush-based surface nanostructures has greatly facilitated the development of materials with unique surface properties. In this review article, synthetic methods used in the synthesis of polymer brushes, and self-assembly approaches applied in the fabrication of surface nanostructures including self-assembly of polymer brushes, co-assembly of polymer brushes and "free" block copolymer chains, and polymerization induced surface self-assembly, are reviewed. It is demonstrated that polymer brush-based surface nanostructures, including spherical surface micelles, wormlike surface structures, layered structures and surface vesicles, can be fabricated. Meanwhile, the challenges in the synthesis and applications of the surface nanostructures are discussed. This review is expected to be helpful for understanding the principles, methods and applications of polymer brush-based surface nanostructures.

Polymer-Tethered Nanoparticles: From Surface Engineering to Directional Self-Assembly

ConspectusCurrent interest in nanoparticle ensembles is motivated by their collective synergetic properties that are distinct from or better than those of individual nanoparticles and their bulk counterparts. These new advanced optical, electronic, magnetic, and catalytic properties can find applications in advanced nanomaterials and functional devices, if control is achieved over nanoparticle organization. Self-assembly offers a cost-efficient approach to produce ensembles of nanoparticles with well-defined and predictable structures. Nanoparticles functionalized with polymer molecules are promising building blocks for self-assembled nanostructures, due to the comparable dimensions of macromolecules and nanoparticles, the ability to synthesize polymers with various compositions, degrees of polymerization, and structures, and the ability of polymers to self-assemble in their own right. Moreover, polymer ligands can endow additional functionalities to nanoparticle assemblies, thus broadening the range of their applications.In this Account, we describe recent progress of our research groups in the development of new strategies for the self-assembly of nanoparticles tethered to macromolecules. At the beginning of our journey, we developed a new approach to patchy nanoparticles and their self-assembly. In a thermodynamically driven strategy, we used poor solvency conditions to induce homopolymer surface segregation in pinned micelles (patches). Patchy nanoparticles underwent self-assembly in a well-defined and controlled manner. Following this work, we overcame the limitation of low yield of the generation of patchy nanoparticles, by using block copolymer ligands. For block copolymer-capped nanoparticles, patch formation and self-assembly were "staged" by using distinct stimuli for each process. We expanded this work to the generation of patchy nanoparticles via dynamic exchange of block copolymer molecules between the nanoparticle surface and micelles in the solution. The scope of our work was further extended to a series of strategies that utilized the change in the configuration of block copolymer ligands during nanoparticle interactions. To this end, we explored the amphiphilicity of block copolymer-tethered nanoparticles and complementary interactions between reactive block copolymer ligands. Both approaches enabled exquisite control over directional and self-limiting self-assembly of complex hierarchical nanostructures. Next, we focused on the self-assembly of chiral nanostructures. To enable this goal, we attached chiral molecules to the surface of nanoparticles and organized these hybrid building blocks in ensembles with excellent chiroptical properties. In summary, our work enables surface engineering of polymer-capped nanoparticles and their controllable and predictable self-assembly. Future research in the field of nanoparticle self-assembly will include the development of effective characterization techniques, the synthesis of new functional polymers, and the development of environmentally responsive self-assembly of polymer-capped nanoparticles for the fabrication of nanomaterials with tailored functionalities.

Patchy metal nanoparticles with polymers: controllable growth and two-way self-assembly

We report a new design of polymer-patched gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with controllable interparticle interactions in terms of their direction and strength. Patchy AuNPs (pAuNPs) are prepared through hydrophobicity-driven surface dewetting under deficient ligand exchange conditions. Using the exposed surface on pAuNPs as seeds, a highly controllable growth of AuNPs is carried out via seed-mediated growth while retaining the size of polymer domains. As guided by ligands, these pAuNPs can self-assemble directionally in two ways along the exposed surface (head-to-head) or the polymer-patched surface of pAuNPs (tail-to-tail). Control of the surface asymmetry/coverage on pAuNPs provides an important tool in balancing interparticle interactions (attraction vs. repulsion) that further tunes assembled nanostructures as clusters and nanochains. The self-assembly pathway plays a key role in determining the interparticle distance and therefore plasmon coupling of pAuNPs. Our results demonstrate a new paradigm in the directional self-assembly of anisotropic building blocks for hierarchical nanomaterials with interesting optical properties.

Electrostatic Adsorption Behaviors of Charged Polymer-tethered Nanoparticles on Oppositely Charged Surfaces

Polymer-grafted hairy nanoparticles (HNPs) that combine the unique properties of inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) and polymers are attractive building blocks for the layer-by-layer assembly of functional hybrid materials, but the adsorption behaviors of HNPs on substrates remain unclear. This article describes a systematic study on the adsorption behavior of charged polymer-grafted HNPs on oppositely charged substrates in different solvent media via a combination of experiments and simulations. We show in simulations that the adsorption process of HNPs is associated with the release of counterions around charged polymers on HNPs, thus resulting in a higher energy barrier of NP adsorption than bare NPs without charged polymer tethers. This energy barrier decreases with decreasing the dielectricity of solvents or ionization degree of grafted polymers or increasing ionic strength of the solution. Furthermore, we confirmed our theoretical prediction in experiments by using a model system of poly(acrylic acid)-grafted silica NPs and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride)-modified wafers. The work provides guidance for the electrostatic assembly of HNPs into functional hybrid composites with applications in membranes, optical devices, and biomedicines. Soft Patch Interface-Oriented Superassembly of Complex Hollow Nanoarchitectures for Smart Dual-Responsive Nanospacecrafts

Meticulous surface patterning of nanoparticles with anisotropic patches as analogs of functional groups offers fascinating potential in many fields, particularly in controllable materials assembly. However, patchy colloids generally evolve into high-symmetry solid structures, mainly because the assembly interactions arise between patches via patch-to-patch recognition. Here, we report an assembly concept, that is, a soft patch, which enables selective and directional fusion of liquid droplets for producing highly asymmetrical hollow nanospacecrafts. Our approach enables precise control of hollow nanoparticle diameters by manipulating droplet fusion regions. By controlling the patch number, more orientations are accessible to droplet fusion, allowing for increased degrees of complexity of hollow self-assemblies. The versatility and curvature-selective growth of this strategy are demonstrated on three nonspherical nanoparticles, enabling the creation of highly asymmetric nanospacecrafts. By patterning Au-core Ag-shell nanorods, the nanospacecraft can be programmed in response to either H₂O₂ or near-infrared light, exhibiting dual-mode response behavior with a 208% increase in the diffusion coefficient in both modes compared with other nanoscale low-asymmetry active materials. Overall, these findings are a significant step toward designing new patch interactions for materials self-assembly for creating complex hollow colloids and functional nanodevices that are otherwise inaccessible.

CD44/Folate Dual Targeting Receptor Reductive Response PLGA-Based Micelles for Cancer Therapy

In this study, a novel poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA)-based micelle was synthesized, which could improve the therapeutic effect of the antitumor drug doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) and reduce its toxic and side effects. The efficient delivery of DOX was achieved by active targeting mediated by double receptors and stimulating the reduction potential in tumor cells. FA-HA-SS-PLGA polymer was synthesized by amidation reaction, and then DOX-loaded micelles were prepared by dialysis method. The corresponding surface method was used to optimize the experimental design. DOX/FA-HA-SS-PLGA micelles with high drug loading rate and encapsulation efficiency were prepared. The results of hydrophilic experiment, critical micelle concentration determination, and hemolysis test all showed that DOX/FA-HA-SS-PLGA micelles had good physicochemical properties and biocompatibility. In addition, both in vitro reduction stimulus response experiment and in vitro release experiment showed that DOX/FA-HA-SS-PLGA micelles had reduction sensitivity. Molecular docking experiments showed that it can bind to the target protein. More importantly, in vitro cytology studies, human breast cancer cells (MCF-7), human non-small cell lung cancer cells (A549), and mouse colon cancer cells (CT26) were used to demonstrate that the dual receptor-mediated endocytosis pathway resulted in stronger cytotoxicity to tumor cells and more significant apoptosis. In and in vivo antitumor experiment, tumor-bearing nude mice were used to further confirm that the micelles with double targeting ligands had better antitumor effect and lower toxicity. These experimental results showed that DOX/FA-HA-SS-PLGA micelles have the potential to be used as chemotherapeutic drugs for precise tumor treatment.

Confinement Assembly in Polymeric Micelles Enables Nanoparticle Superstructures with Tunable Molecular-Like Geometries

The self-assembly of a small number of nanoparticles into superstructures that mimic the geometry of molecules provides an unprecedented route for creating materials with precisely defined structures and potentially programmable functionalities. Such nanoparticle clusters (NPCs), also known as colloidal molecules, have a wide range of applications due to the decisive ensemble effect. Here, a universal and straightforward strategy is developed to construct NPCs with tunable molecular-like geometries by confining the self-assembly of hydrophobic nanoparticles within micelles formed by amphiphilic copolymers. It is found that confinement assembly of both spherical and anisotropic nanoparticles can lead to NPCs, the molecular-like conformation of which is widely tunable by adjusting the ratio between copolymers and nanoparticles. Mechanistic studies reveal the formation of large-vesicle intermediates along the path toward forming NPCs. This work establishes a facile and general strategy of assembling finite nanoparticles with precisely tunable geometries without introducing any directional interactions, which can accelerate the exploration of clustered superstructures toward broad applications.

Advances in design and applications of polymer brush modified anisotropic particles

Current advancements in the creation of anisotropy in particles and their surface modification with polymer brushes have established a new class of hybrid materials termed polymer brush modified anisotropic particles (PBMAP). PBMAPs display unique property combinations, e.g., multi-functionality in multiple directions along with smart behavior, which is not easily achievable in traditional hybrid materials. Typically, anisotropic particles can be categorized based on three different factors, such as shape anisotropy (geometry driven), compositional anisotropy (functionality driven), and surface anisotropy (spatio-selective surface modification driven). In this review, we have particularly focused on the synthetic strategies to construct the various type of PBMAPs based on inorganic or organic core which may or may not be isotropic in nature, and their applications in various fields ranging from drug delivery to catalysis. In addition, superior performances and fascinating properties of PBMAPs over their isotropic analogues are also highlighted. A brief overview of their future developments and associated challenges have been discussed at the end.

Adaptable Multivalent Hairy Inorganic Nanoparticles

We report a polymer brush-based approach for fabricating multivalent patchy nanoparticles (NPs) with the number of nanodomains (valency) from 6 to 10, potentially from 1 to 10, by exploiting the lateral microphase separation of binary mixed homopolymer brushes grafted on NPs with a radius comparable to the polymer sizes. Well-defined mixed brushes were grown on 20.4 nm silica NPs by two-step surface-initiated reversible deactivation radical polymerizations and microphase separated laterally upon casting from a good solvent, producing multivalent NPs on 2D surfaces. A linear relationship between valency and average core size for the corresponding valency was observed. The mixed brush NPs exhibited abilities to form "bonds" through the overlap of nanodomains and to change the valency when interacting with adjacent NPs. This method could open up a new avenue for studying patchy NPs.

Solvent-Evaporation Induced and Mechanistic Entropy-Enthalpy-Balance Controlled Polymer Patch Formation on Nanoparticle Surfaces

The formation of polymer-patch nanoparticles (PNPs) involves a condensation process of grafted chains on a nanoparticle (NP) surface, which is conventionally achieved via a fine-tuning of the solvent quality. However, such a critical solvent condition differs dramatically between polymers, and the formation mechanism of different patchy structures remains under debate. In this study, we demonstrate by a combined simulation and experimental study that such a surface-patterning process can be easily achieved via a simple solvent evaporation process, which creates a natural nonsolvent condition and is, in principle, adaptable for all polymers. More importantly, we find that patchy structures are controlled by a delicate balance between enthalpic interaction and the entropy penalty of grafted chains. A small variation of cohesive energy density can lead to a dramatic change in patch structure. This work offers a robust yet easy approach for the fabrication of PNPs and provides new insights into polymer segregation on spherical surfaces.

Symmetry-Broken Patches on Gold Nanoparticles through Deficient Ligand Exchange

Symmetry-broken nanoparticles (NPs) are important building blocks with directional interparticle interaction as a key to access the precise organization of NPs macroscopically. We report a facile, one-pot synthetic approach to prepare high-quality symmetry-broken plasmonic gold NPs (AuNPs). Symmetry-broken patterning is achieved through deficient ligand exchange of isotropic AuNPs with thiol-terminated polystyrene (PS-SH) in the presence of an amphiphilic polymer surfactant. The concentration of PS-SH plays a dominant role in tuning surface patterning and coverage of AuNPs. The formation of asymmetric surface patches arises from the interplay between the conformational entropy of polymer ligands and the interfacial energy between polymer-grafted AuNPs and the solvent. Our method illustrates new paradises to design asymmetric NPs with directional interparticle interactions to access the precise organization of NPs.

Stereoselective Growth of Small Molecule Patches on Nanoparticles

Patchy nanoparticles featuring tunable surface domains with spatial and chemical specificity are of fundamental interest, especially for creating three-dimensional (3D) colloidal structures. Guided assembly and regioselective conjugation of polymers have been widely used to manipulate such topography on nanoparticles; however, the processes require presynthesized specialized polymer chains and elaborate assembly conditions. Here, we show how small molecules can form 3D patches in aqueous environments in a single step. The patch features (e.g., size, number, conformation, and stereoselectivity) are modulated by a self-polymerizable aromatic dithiol and comixed ligands, which indicates an autonomous assembly mechanism involving covalent polymerization and supramolecular assembly. Moreover, this method is independent of the underlying nanoparticle material and dimension, offering a streamlined and powerful toolset to design heterogeneous patches on the nanoscale.
