Ordered Water Layer on the Macroscopically Hydrophobic Fluorinated Polymer Surface and Its Ultrafast Vibrational Dynamics

High-Performance Nanofiltration Membrane with Dual Resistance to Gypsum Scaling and Biofouling for Enhanced Water Purification

Nanofiltration (NF) technology is pivotal for ensuring a sustainable and reliable supply of clean water. To address the critical need for advanced thin-film composite (TFC) polyamide (PA) membranes with exceptional permselectivity and fouling resistance for emerging contaminant purification, we introduce a novel high-performance NF membrane. This membrane features a selective polypiperazine (PIP) layer functionalized with amino-containing quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) through an in situ interfacial polycondensation reaction. Our investigation demonstrated that precise QAC functionalization enabled the construction of the selective PA layer with increased surface area, enhanced microporosity, stronger electronegativity, and reduced thickness compared to the control PIP membrane. As a result, the QAC NF membrane exhibited an approximately 51% increase in water permeance compared to the control PIP membrane, while achieving superior retention capabilities for divalent salts (>99%) and emerging organic contaminants (>90%). Furthermore, the incorporation of QACs into the PIP selective layer was proved to be effective in mitigating mineral scaling by allowing selective passage of scale-forming cations, while simultaneously exhibiting strong antimicrobial properties to combat biofouling. The in situ QAC incorporation strategy presented in this study provides valuable guidelines for the fit-for-purpose design of the selective PA layer, which is crucial for the development of high-performance NF membranes for efficient water purification.

Close Packing in Trans Conformers Promotes the Formation of Supramolecular Structures with C1 Symmetry

Assemblies with C1 symmetry exhibit important applications in many fields such as enantioselective catalysis. However, their formation is challenging due to their large entropic disadvantage, and molecular information on their formation dynamics is limited because of the lack of effective characterization techniques. Here, using achiral amphiphilic molecules such as N-oleoyl ethanolamide (OEA) and its analogues as modeling assembly units, we demonstrated that the sss polarization signals, generated by femtosecond sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy (SFG-VS), provide a powerful tool to monitor the formation dynamics of the C1 symmetric supramolecular structures at the interfaces. The trans conformation of the assembly units can provide strong π-π interactions and thus produce enough enthalpy to drive the formation of C1 symmetric supramolecular structures. However, the cis conformation impedes the assembly of C1 symmetric structures and cannot generate sss and chiral polarization SFG signals. These findings may aid in rationally constructing ordered and functional superstructures and understanding the mechanism of chirality formation.

High throughput production of a self-floating MIL-88A(Fe)@polyurethane sponge for efficient oil/water separation

A durable and efficient hydrophobic/superoleophilic MIL-88A(Fe)@sponge (MS) with high throughput was fabricated via the dip-coating technique. Its adsorption capacities for pump oil, peanut oil, and CCl4 were 32.13 g g-1, 34.85 g g-1, and 34.25 g g-1, respectively. The hydrophobic surface of MS has excellent chemical resistance and physical stability in harsh environments.

Probing the Local Near-Field Intensity of Plasmonic Nanoparticles in the Mid-infrared Spectral Region

The enhanced local field of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in mid-infrared spectral regions is essential for improving the detection sensitivity of vibrational spectroscopy and mediating photochemical reactions. However, it is still challenging to measure its intensity at subnanometer scales. Here, using the NO2 symmetric stretching mode (νNO2) of self-assembled 4-nitrothiophenol (4-NTP) monolayers on AuNPs as a model, we demonstrated that the percentage of excited νNO2 mode, determined by femtosecond time-resolved sum-frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy, allows us to directly detect the local field intensity of the AuNP surface in subnanometer ranges. The local-field intensity is tuned by AuNP diameters. An approximate 17-fold enhancement was observed for the local field on 80 nm AuNPs compared to the Au film. Additionally, the local field can regulate the anharmonicity of the νNO2 mode by synergistic effect with molecular orientation. This work offers a promising approach to probe the local field intensity distribution around plasmonic NP surfaces at subnanometer scales.

Understanding the active role of water in laboratory chamber studies of reactions of the OH radical with alcohols of atmospheric relevance

In this work, we studied the reactions of three cyclic aliphatic alcohols with OH at room temperature, atmospheric pressure and different humidities in a Teflon reaction chamber. It was determined that the lower the solubility of the alcohol in water, the larger the effect of the humidity on the acceleration of the reaction. This experimental evidence allows suggesting that the acceleration is due to the reaction of the co-adsorbed reactants at the air-water interface of a thin water film deposited on the Teflon walls of the reaction chamber, instead of between co-reactants dissolved in the water film or due to gas phase catalysis as previously suggested. Therefore, formation of thin water films on different surfaces could have some implications on the tropospheric chemistry of these alcohols in the tropical regions of the planet with high humidity.

Tunable Surface Wettability via Terahertz Electrowave Controlled Vicinal Subnanoscale Water Layer

Achieving timely, reversible, and long-range remote tunability over surface wettability is highly demanded across diverse fields, including nanofluidic systems, drug delivery, and heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, using molecular dynamic simulations, we show, for the first time, a theoretical design of electrowetting to achieve remotely controllable surface wettability via using a terahertz wave. The key idea driving the design is the unique terahertz collective vibration identified in the vicinal subnanoscale water layer, which is absent in bulk water, enabling efficient energy transfer from the terahertz wave to the rotational motion of the vicinal subnanoscale water layer. Consequently, a frequency-specific alternating terahertz electric field near the critical strength can significantly affect the local hydrogen-bonding network of the contact water layer on the solid surface, thereby achieving tunable surface wettability.

Determination of the Thickness of Interfacial Water by Time-Resolved Sum-Frequency Generation Vibrational Spectroscopy

The physics and chemistry of a charged interface are governed by the structure of the electrical double layer (EDL). Determination of the interfacial water thickness (diw) of the charged interface is crucial to quantitatively describe the EDL structure, but it can be utilized with very scarce experimental methods. Here, we propose and verify that the vibrational relaxation time (T1) of the OH stretching mode at 3200 cm-1, obtained by time-resolved sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy with ssp polarizations, provides an effective tool to determine diw. By investigating the T1 values at the SiO2/NaCl solution interface, we established a time-space (T1-diw) relationship. We find that water has a T1 lifetime of ≥0.5 ps for diw ≤ 3 Å, while it displays bulk-like dynamics with T1 ≤ 0.2 ps for diw ≥ 9 Å. T1 decreases as diw increases from ∼3 Å to 9 Å. The hydration water at the DPPG lipid bilayer and LK15β protein interfaces has a thickness of ≥9 Å and shows a bulk-like feature. The time-space relationship will provide a novel tool to pattern the interfacial topography and heterogeneity in Ångstrom-depth resolution by imaging the T1 values.

Visualizing Water Monomers and Chiral OH-(H2O) Complexes Infiltrated in a Macroscopic Hydrophobic Teflon Matrix

Insights into the interaction of fluoroalkyl groups with water are crucial to understanding the polar hydrophobicity of fluorinated compounds, such as Teflon. While an ordered hydrophobic-like 2D water layer has been demonstrated to be present on the surface of macroscopically hydrophobic fluorinated polymers, little is known about how the water infiltrates into the Teflon and what is the molecular structure of the water infiltrated into the Teflon. Using highly sensitive femtosecond sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy (SFG-VS), we observe for the first time that monomeric H2O and chiral OH-(H2O) complexes are present in macroscopically hydrophobic Teflon. The species are inhomogeneously distributed inside the Teflon matrix and at the Teflon surface. No water clusters or single-file water "wires" are observed in the matrix. SFG free induction decay (SFG-FID) experiments demonstrate that the OH oscillators of physically absorbed molecular water at the surface dephase on the time scale of <230 fs, whereas the water monomers and hydrated hydroxide ions infiltrated in the Teflon matrix dephase much more slowly (680-830 fs), indicating that the embedded monomeric H2O and OH-(H2O) complexes are decoupled from the outer environment. Our findings can well interpret ultrafast water permeation through fluorous nanochannels and the charging mechanism of Teflon, which may tailor the desired applications of organofluorines.

Pumping and sliding of droplets steered by a hydrogel pattern for atmospheric water harvesting

Atmospheric water harvesting is an emerging strategy for decentralized and potable water supplies. However, water nucleation and microdroplet coalescence on condensing surfaces often result in surface flooding owing to the lack of a sufficient directional driving force for shedding. Herein, inspired by the fascinating properties of lizards and catfish, we present a condensing surface with engineered hydrogel patterns that enable rapid and sustainable water harvesting through the directional pumping and drag-reduced sliding of water droplets. The movement of microscale condensed droplets is synergistically driven by the surface energy gradient and difference in Laplace pressure induced by the arch hydrogel patterns. Meanwhile, the superhydrophilic hydrogel surface can strongly bond inner-layer water molecules to form a lubricant film that reduces drag and facilitates the sliding of droplets off the condensing surface. Thus, this strategy is promising for various water purification techniques based on liquid-vapor phase-change processes.

Enhancing Textile Water Repellency with Octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) and Hollow Silica Nanoparticles

Superhydrophobic coatings have attracted substantial attention owing to their potential application in various industries. Conventional textiles used in daily life are prone to staining with water and household liquids, necessitating the development of water-repellent and stain-resistant coatings. In this study, we fabricated a highly water-repellent superhydrophobic PET fabric by using an eco-friendly water-based coating process. Fluorine-free octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) solutions with various wt.% of hollow silica (HS) nanoparticles were used to produce a superhydrophobic surface via a facile dip coating method. Our findings revealed that the incorporation of HS nanoparticles substantially increased the water contact angle, with higher concentrations resulting in enhanced water repellency and increased surface roughness. The treated fabrics had a remarkable water contact angle of 152.4° ± 0.8°, demonstrating their superhydrophobic fiber surface. In addition, the durability of these superhydrophobic properties was investigated via a laundry procedure, which showed that the fabrics maintained their water repellency even after 20 laundering cycles. EDX and XRD analyses confirmed that the morphological evaluations did not reveal any substantial structural alterations. Significantly, the fibers maintained their strength and durability throughout the testing, enduring only minor hollow SiO2 nanoparticle loss. This eco-friendly and cost-effective method holds great potential for application in apparel and other industries, offering an effective solution to resist water stains and improve performance in various contexts.

Origin of the Hydrophobic Behaviour of Hydrophilic CeO2

The nature of the hydrophobicity found in rare-earth oxides is intriguing. The CeO2 (100) surface, despite its strongly hydrophilic nature, exhibits hydrophobic behaviour when immersed in water. In order to understand this puzzling and counter-intuitive effect we performed a detailed analysis of the confined water structure and dynamics. We report here an ab-initio molecular dynamics simulation (AIMD) study which demonstrates that the first adsorbed water layer, in immediate contact with the hydroxylated CeO2 surface, generates a hydrophobic interface with respect to the rest of the liquid water. The hydrophobicity is manifested in several ways: a considerable diffusion enhancement of the confined liquid water as compared with bulk water at the same thermodynamic condition, a weak adhesion energy and few H-bonds above the hydrophobic water layer, which may also sustain a water droplet. These findings introduce a new concept in water/rare-earth oxide interfaces: hydrophobicity mediated by specific water patterns on a hydrophilic surface.

Boosting Catalytic Selectivity through a Precise Spatial Control of Catalysts at Pickering Droplet Interfaces

Exploration of new methodologies to tune catalytic selectivity is a long-sought goal in catalytic community. In this work, oil-water interfaces of Pickering emulsions are developed to effectively regulate catalytic selectivity of hydrogenation reactions, which was achieved via a precise control of the spatial distribution of metal nanoparticles at the droplet interfaces. It was found that Pd nanoparticles located in the inner interfacial layer of Pickering droplets exhibited a significantly enhanced selectivity for p-chloroaniline (up to 99.6%) in the hydrogenation of p-chloronitrobenzene in comparison to those in the outer interfacial layer (63.6%) in pure water (68.5%) or in pure organic solvents (46.8%). Experimental and theoretical investigations indicated that such a remarkable interfacial microregion-dependent catalytic selectivity was attributed to the microenvironments of the coexistence of water and organic solvent at the droplet interfaces, which could provide unique interfacial hydrogen-bonding interactions and solvation effects so as to alter the adsorption patterns of p-chloronitrobenzene and p-chloroaniline on the Pd nanoparticles, thereby avoiding the unwanted contact of C-Cl bonds with the metal surfaces. Our strategy of precise spatial control of catalysts at liquid-liquid interfaces and the unprecedented interfacial effect reported here not only provide new insights into the liquid-liquid interfacial reactions but also open an avenue to boost catalytic selectivity.

Enhanced Sum Frequency Generation for Monolayers on Au Relative to Silica: Local Field Factors and SPR Effect

Using metals as signal magnified substrates, surface plasmon-enhanced sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy is a promising technique to probe weak molecular-level signals at surfaces and interfaces. In this study, the vibrational signals of the n-alkane monolayer on the gold (Au) and silica substrates are investigated using the broadband femtosecond SFG. The enhancement factors are discovered to be up to ∼1076 and ∼31 for the methyl symmetric and asymmetric stretching (ss and as) modes of the monolayer, respectively. By systematically analyzing the second-order nonlinear susceptibility tensor components (χ_ijks), the Fresnel coefficients (F_ijks), and the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect, we find that the interplay between F_ijk and χ_ijk terms and the SPR effect dominate the SFG signal enhancement. Our study reveals that the relative contributions of different influencing factors (i.e., Fresnel coefficients and SPR) to the SFG signal enhancement provide an approach to interpreting enhanced SFG vibrational signals detected from probe molecules on distinct substrates and may finally guide the design of the experimental methodology to improve the detection sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio.

Evidence for a Local Field Effect in Surface Plasmon-Enhanced Sum Frequency Generation Vibrational Spectra

Surface plasmon-enhanced vibrational spectroscopy has been demonstrated to be an important highly sensitive diagnostic technique, but its enhanced mechanism is yet to be explored. In this study, we couple femtosecond sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy (SFG-VS) with surface plasmon generated by the excitation of localized gold nanorods/nanoparticles and investigate the plasmonically enhanced factors (EFs) of SFG signals from poly(methyl methacrylate) films. Through monitoring the SFG intensity of carbonyl and ester methyl groups, we have established a correlation between EFs and the coupling of localized surface plasmon resonance with SFG and visible beams. It is found that the total enhanced factor is approximately proportional to the square of an enhanced factor of the SFG electromagnetic field and the fourth power of the enhanced factor of the visible electromagnetic field. The local field effect is roughly expressed to be the square of an enhanced factor of the visible electromagnetic field. This finding will help to guide the experimental design of plasmon-enhanced SFG to drastically improve the detection sensitivity and thus provide greater insight into the ultrafast dynamics near plasmonic surfaces.

The Dynamic Behaviour of Multi-Phase Flow on a Polymeric Surface with Various Hydrophobicity and Electric Field Strength

The dynamic behaviour of rain droplets on the insulator surface is a key measure to its reliability and performance. This is due to the fact that the presence and motion of rain droplets cause intensive discharge activities, such as corona and low current arcing, which accelerate the ageing process and flashovers. This article aims to investigate and characterize the movement of a rain droplet placed on an inclined insulator surface subject to an intensive electric field. The rain droplets’ movement on hydrophobic surfaces in the absence of an electric field is investigated. A high speed camera is used to capture the footage and finite element method (FEM) is used to simulate the multi-physics phenomenon on two polymeric surfaces, namely, silicon rubber (SiR) and PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene). A ‘creepage’ motion was observed. The inception of motion and the movement speed are analysed in correlation with various surface conditions. Models are established to estimate the moisture and potential discharge characteristics on the inclined polymeric surfaces. They are further utilized to analyse the actual insulators subject to wet conditions.

Evidence for Entropically Controlled Interfacial Hydration in Mesoporous Organosilicas

At aqueous interfaces, the distribution and dynamics of adsorbates are modulated by the behavior of interfacial water. Hydration of a hydrophobic surface can store entropy via the ordering of interfacial water, which contributes to the Gibbs energy of solute binding. However, there is little experimental evidence for the existence of such entropic reservoirs, and virtually no precedent for their rational design in systems involving extended interfaces. In this study, two series of mesoporous silicas were modified in distinct ways: (1) progressively deeper thermal dehydroxylation, via condensation of surface silanols, and (2) increasing incorporation of nonpolar organic linkers into the silica framework. Both approaches result in decreasing average surface polarity, manifested in a blue-shift in the fluorescence of an adsorbed dye. For the inorganic silicas, hydrogen-bonding of water becomes less extensive as the number of surface silanols decreases. Overhauser dynamic nuclear polarization (ODNP) relaxometry indicates enhanced surface water diffusivity, reflecting a loss of enthalpic hydration. In contrast, organosilicas show a monotonic decrease in surface water diffusivity with decreasing polarity, reflecting enhanced hydrophobic hydration. Molecular dynamics simulations predict increased tetrahedrality of interfacial water for the organosilicas, implying increased ordering near the nm-size organic domains (relative to inorganic silicas, which necessarily lack such domains). These findings validate the prediction that hydrophobic hydration at interfaces is controlled by the microscopic length scale of the hydrophobic regions. They further suggest that the hydration thermodynamics of structurally heterogeneous silica surfaces can be tuned to promote adsorption, which in turn tunes the selectivity in catalytic reactions.

Water Capture Mechanisms at Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework Interfaces

Water capture mechanisms of zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-90 are revealed by differentiating the water clustering and the center pore filling step, using vibrational sum-frequency generation spectroscopy (VSFG) at a one-micron spatial resolution and state-of-the-art molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Through spectral line shape comparison between VSFG and IR spectra, the relative humidity dependence of VSFG intensity, and MD simulations, based on MB-pol, we found water clustering and center pore filling happen nearly simultaneously within each pore, with water filling the other pores sequentially. The integration of nonlinear optics with MD simulations provides critical mechanistic insights into the pore filling mechanism and suggests that the relative strength of the hydrogen bonds governs the water uptake mechanisms. This molecular-level detailed mechanism can inform the rational optimization of metal-organic frameworks for water harvesting.

Perfluoroalkanes remain on water surface even after volatilization: Affinity analysis of fluorinated solvent with water surface

Perfluoroalkyl (R_f) compounds are known to have a poor solubility for most solvents except fluorinated solvents, which is known as a fluorous property. In Langmuir (L) film studies of R_f compounds, fluorinated solvents such as perfluoro-n-alkanes are generally used as a good solvent for depositing a sample monolayer on the water surface. On the other hand, a single R_f chain with a short length such as C₆F₁₃- is known to exhibit a totally different character from a condensed matter to have a strong affinity to a water molecule on the water surface via the dipole-dipole interaction, which is known as the dipole interactive (DI) property. On considering the DI property, the solvents of perfluoro-n-alkanes would remain on water for a long time, which may disturb the formation of L film on water. In the present study, details of a liquid layer of perfluoro-n-alkanes on water are investigated by using infrared external reflection (IR ER) spectrometry. Although the perfluoro-n-alkanes are highly volatile, the relevant vibration bands did not disappear even after two hours, which means that they remain on the water surface. Fortunately, however, the remained solvent, C₆F₁₄, has been found no disturbing factor for preparation of L films.
