Near-Unity Singlet Fission on a Quantum Dot Initiated by Resonant Energy Transfer

Triplet-triplet annihilation-based photon upconversion using nanoparticles and nanoclusters

The phenomenon of photon upconversion (UC), generating high-energy photons from low-energy photons, has attracted significant attention. In particular, triplet-triplet annihilation-based UC (TTA-UC) has been achieved by combining the excitation states of two types of molecules, called the sensitizer and emitter (or annihilator). With TTA-UC, it is possible to convert weak, incoherent near-infrared (NIR) light, which constitutes half of the solar radiation intensity, into ultraviolet and visible light that are suitable for the operation of light-responsive functional materials or devices such as solar cells and photocatalysts. Research on TTA-UC is being conducted worldwide, often employing materials with high intersystem crossing rates, such as metal porphyrins, as sensitizers. This review summarizes recent research and trends in triplet energy transfer and TTA-UC for semiconductor nanoparticles or nanocrystals with diameters in the nanometer range, also known as quantum dots, and for ligand-protected metal nanoclusters, which have even smaller well-defined sub-nanostructures. Concerning nanoparticles, transmitter ligands have been applied on the surface of the nanoparticles to efficiently transfer triplet excitons formed inside the nanoparticles to emitters. Applications are expanding to solid-state UC devices that convert NIR light to visible light. Additionally, there is active research in the development of sensitizers using more cost-effective and environmentally friendly elements. Regarding metal nanoclusters, methods have been established for the evaluation of excited states, deepening the understanding of luminescent properties and excited relaxation processes.

Unveiling the Impact of Light-Induced Acceptor-Generated ROS on Device Stability in Organic Photovoltaics

The intrinsic stability of the acceptor is a crucial component of the photovoltaic device stability. In this study, we investigated the efficiency and stability of the nonfused-ring acceptors LC8 and BC8 under indoor light conditions. Interestingly, we found that devices based on BC8 with terminal side chains exhibited a higher indoor efficiency and stability. Through accelerated aging experiments, we discovered that the acceptors generate singlet oxygen under light exposure with BC8 demonstrating lower levels of ROS compared to LC8. We attribute this difference to the modulation of the acceptor aggregation orientation. Furthermore, the generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) further deteriorate the acceptor structure, and this phenomenon is also observed in high-efficiency acceptor structures, such as Y6. Our research reveals important mechanisms of acceptor photo-oxidation processes, providing a theoretical basis for enhancing the intrinsic stability of acceptors.

On-Demand Assembly of Nanocrystals into a Superstructure Library in Co(OH)2 Single-Walled Nanotubes

The hierarchical self-assembly of colloidal particles facilitates the bottom-up manufacturing of metamaterials with synergistically integrated functionalities. Here, we define a modular assembly methodology that enables multinary co-assembly of nanoparticles in one-dimensional confined space. A series of isotropic and anisotropic nanocrystals such as plasmonic, metallic, visible, and near-infrared responsive nanoparticles as well as transition-metal phosphides can be selectively assembled within the single-walled Co(OH)2 nanotubes to achieve various increasingly sophisticated assembly systems, including unary, binary, ternary, and quaternary superstructures. Moreover, the selective assembly of distinct functional nanoparticles produces different integrated functional superstructures. This generalizable methodology provides predictable pathways to complex architectures with structural programming and customization that are otherwise inaccessible.

Controlling Electronic Coupling of Acene Chromophores on Quantum Dot Surfaces through Variable-Concentration Ligand Exchange

Controlling the binding of functional organic molecules on quantum dot (QD) surfaces and the resulting ligand/QD interfacial structure determines the resulting organic-inorganic hybrid behavior. In this study, we vary the binding of tetracenedicarboxylate ligands bound to PbS QDs cast in thin films by performing solid-state ligand exchange of as-produced bound oleate ligands. We employ comprehensive Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) analysis coupled with ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectrophotometric measurements, transient absorption, and Density Functional Theory (DFT) simulations to study the QD/ligand surface structure and resulting optoelectronic properties. We find that there are three primary QD/diacid structures, each with a distinct binding mode dictated by the QD-ligand and ligand-ligand intermolecular and steric interactions. They can be accessed nearly independently of one another via different input ligand concentrations. Low concentrations produce mixed oleate/tetracene ligand structures where the tetracene carboxylates tilt toward QD surfaces. Intermediate concentrations produce mixed oleate/tetracene ligand structures with ligand-ligand interactions through intramolecular hydrogen bonding with the ligands perpendicular to the QD surface and weaker QD/ligand electronic interactions. High concentrations result in full ligand exchange, and the ligands tilt toward the surface while the QD film compacts. When the tetracene ligands tilt or lie flat on the QD surface, the benzene ring π-system interacts strongly with the p-orbitals at the PbS surface and produces strong QD-ligand interactions evidenced through QD/ligand state mixing, with a coupling energy of ≈700 meV.

Unveiling upsurge of photogenerated ROS: control of intersystem crossing through tuning aggregation patterns

Photo-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation by organic photosensitizers (PSs), which show potential in significant fields such as photodynamic therapy (PDT), are highly dependent on the formation of the excited triplet state through intersystem crossing (ISC). The current research on ISC of organic PSs generally focuses on molecular structure optimization. In this manuscript, the influence of aggregation patterns on ISC was investigated by constructing homologous monomers (S-TPA-PI and L-TPA-PI) and their homologous dimers (S-2TPA-2PI and L-2TPA-2PI). In contrast to J-aggregated S-TPA-PI, S-2TPA-2PI-aggregate forming "end-to-end" stacking through π-π interaction could generate ROS more efficiently, due to a prolonged exciton lifetime and enhanced ISC rate constant (k _ISC), which were revealed by femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. This finding was further validated by the regulation of aggregation patterns induced by host-guest interaction. Moreover, S-2TPA-2PI could target mitochondria and achieve rapid mitophagy to cause more significant cancer cell suppression. Overall, the delicate supramolecular dimerization tactics not only revealed the structure-property relationship of organic PSs but also shed light on the development of a universal strategy in future PDT and photocatalysis fields.

Singlet Fission Materials for Photovoltaics: from Small Molecules to Macromolecules

Singlet fission (SF) is a spin-allowed process in which a singlet state splits into two triplet states. Materials that enable SF have attracted great attention in the last decade, mainly stemming from the potential of overcoming the Shockley-Queisser (SQ) limit in photoenergy conversion. In the past decade, a large number of new molecules exhibiting SF have been explored and many devices based on SF materials have been studied, though the mechanistic understanding is still obscure. This review focuses on the recent developments of SF materials, including small molecules, oligomers and polymers. The molecular design strategies and related mechanisms of SF are discussed. Then the dynamics of charge transfer and energy transfer between SF materials and other materials are introduced. Further, we discuss the progresses of implementing SF in photovoltaics. It is hoped that a comprehensive understanding to the SF materials, devices and mechanism may pave a new way for the design of next generation photovoltaics. This article is protected by copyright.
