Hydrogen-Intercalation-Induced Lattice Expansion of Pd@Pt Core-Shell Nanoparticles for Highly Efficient Electrocatalytic Alcohol Oxidation

Modelling the activity trend of the hydrogen oxidation reaction under constant potential conditions

A microkinetic model is constructed for the electrocatalytic alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction based on grand canonical density functional theory calculations and linear relationships with the adsorption energies of hydrogen and hydroxide as descriptors. Using this model, the activity trend suitable for efficient catalyst screening has been identified.

Insights into the roles of nitrogen and phosphorus co-doping for efficient methanol electrooxidation

Anchoring Pt onto multi-heteroatom doped carbon materials has been recognized as an effective approach to improve the performance of electrocatalytic methanol oxidation. However, distinct contributions and specific behavior mechanisms of different heteroatoms, notably N and P, the specific behavior mechanisms in synergistically promoting Pt NPs remain elusive. In this work, we construct 1D N and P co-doped carbon nanotube (N, P-CNTs) supports with abundant defect anchors for Pt. The as-prepared Pt/N, P-CNTs exhibit outstanding activity and exceptional stability in methanol oxidation reaction (MOR), achieving high mass activity up to 6481.3 mA mg-1Pt. Moreover, they can retain 90.5 % of their initial current density even after 800 cycles tests. Detailed characterizations and theoretical calculations indicate that the robust strong metal-support interactions (SMSI) effect caused by N doping within the unique N and P co-doped coordination structure controllably regulate the coordination environment of Pt, reduce the d-band center of Pt, thus promoting the adsorption and decomposition of CH3OH. However, P doping weakens the adsorption strength of CO on the Pt active site by sacrificing partial electron transfer, accelerating the oxidative conversion of the CO-like poisoning species (COads). Significantly, the synergistic mechanism of N and P species on the modification of Pt's electronic structure and its subsequent impact on the electrocatalytic methanol oxidation behaviors on the Pt surface was thoroughly elucidated, providing a constructive route for designing robust MOR electrocatalysts with high MOR activity and durability.

Biaxial strain induced OH engineer for accelerating alkaline hydrogen evolution

The sluggish kinetics of Volmer step in the alkaline hydrogen evolution results in large energy consumption. The challenge that has yet well resolved is to control the water adsorption and dissociation. Here, we develop biaxially strained MoSe2 three dimensional nanoshells that exhibit enhanced catalytic performance with a low overpotential of 58.2 mV at 10 mA cm-2 in base, and long-term stable activity in membrane-electrode-assembly based electrolyser at 1 A cm-2. Compared to the flat and uniaxial-strained MoSe2, we establish that the stably adsorbed OH engineer on biaxially strained MoSe2 changes the water adsorption configuration from O-down on Mo to O-horizontal on OH* via stronger hydrogen bonds. The favorable water dissociation on 3-coordinated Mo sites and hydrogen adsorption on 4-coordinated Mo sites constitute a tandem electrolysis, resulting in thermodynamically favorable hydrogen evolution. This work deepens our understanding to the impact of strain dimensions on water dissociation and inspires the design of nanostructured catalysts for accelerating the rate-determining step in multi-electron reactions.

Copper nanoclusters-doped novel carrier with synergistic adsorption-catalytic active sites to enable high-performance dye removal

Enhancing the synergistic interplay between adsorption and catalytic oxidation to amplify Fenton-like effects remains a pivotal challenge in advancing water pollution remediation strategies. In this study, a suite of novel carriers (SH) composed of silica (SiO2) and hydroxyapatite (HAp) in different ratios were synthesized through an amalgamation of the sol-gel and co-precipitation techniques. Notably, various forms of copper (Cu) species, including Cu2+ ions and Cu nanoclusters (Cu NCs), could be stably incorporated onto the SH surface via meticulous loading and doping techniques. This approach has engendered a new class of Fenton-like catalysts (Cu NCs-SH1-5) characterized by robust acid-base tolerance stability and remarkable recyclability. Compared with the previously reported Cu NCs-HAp, this catalyst with lower Cu species content could achieve better performance in adsorbing and degrading dyes under the aid of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The catalyst's dual action sites, specifically the adsorption sites (SiOH, POH, slit pores) and catalytic centers (multivalent Cu species), had clear division of labor and collaborate with each other. Further, reactive oxygen species (ROS) identification and astute electrochemical testing have unveiled the mechanism underpinning the cooperative degradation of dyes by three types of ROS, spawned through electron transfer between the Fenton-like catalyst (Cu NCs-SH) and H2O2. From these insights, the mechanism of synergistic adsorption-catalytic removal was proposed.

Strain engineering of PtMn alloy enclosed by high-indexed facets boost ethanol electrooxidation

Surface strain engineering has proven to be an efficient strategy to enhance catalytic properties of platinum (Pt)-based catalysts for electrooxidation reactions. Herein, the S-doped PtMn concave cubes (CNCs) enclosed with high index facets (HIFs) and regulatable surface strain are successfully fabricated by two steps hydrothermal method. The S element with electrophilic property can modify the near-surface of PtMn nanocrystals, altering the electronic structure of Pt to effectively regulate the adsorption/desorption of intermediates in the ethanol electrooxidation reaction (EOR). The PtMnS1.1 catalyst with optimal surface strain delivered extraordinary catalytic performance on EOR in acidic media, with a specific activity of 2.88 mA/cm2 and mass activity of 1.10 mA/μgPt, which is 4.1 and 2.2 times larger than that of state-of-the-art Pt/C catalyst, respectively. Additionally, the PtMnS1.1 catalyst also achieve excellent catalytic properties in alkaline electrolyte for EOR. The results of kinetic studies indicated that the surface strain and modified electronic structure can degrade the activation energy barrier during the process of EOR, which is beneficial for enhance the reaction rate. This work provides a promising approach to construct highly efficient electrocatalysts with tunable surface strain effects for clean energy electro-chemical reactions.

Balancing Pd-H Interactions: Thiolate-Protected Palladium Nanoclusters for Robust and Rapid Hydrogen Gas Sensing

The transition toward hydrogen gas (H2) as an eco-friendly and renewable energy source necessitates advanced safety technologies, particularly robust sensors for H2 leak detection and concentration monitoring. Although palladium (Pd)-based materials are preferred for their strong H2 affinity, intense palladium-hydrogen (Pd-H) interactions lead to phase transitions to palladium hydride (PdHx), compromising sensors' durability and detection speeds after multiple uses. In response, this study introduces a high-performance H2 sensor designed from thiolate-protected Pd nanoclusters (Pd8SR16), which leverages the synergistic effect between the metal and protective ligands to form an intermediate palladium-hydrogen-sulfur (Pd-H-S) state during H2 adsorption. Striking a balance, it preserves Pd-H binding affinity while preventing excessive interaction, thus lowering the energy required for H2 desorption. The dynamic adsorption-dissociation-recombination-desorption process is efficiently and highly reversible with Pd8SR16, ensuring robust and rapid H2 sensing at parts per million (ppm). The Pd8SR16-based sensor demonstrates exceptional stability (50 cycles; 0.11% standard deviation in response), prompt response/recovery (t90 = 0.95 s/6 s), low limit of detection (LoD, 1 ppm), and ambient temperature operability, ranking it among the most sensitive Pd-based H2 sensors. Furthermore, a multifunctional prototype demonstrates the practicality of real-world gas sensing using ligand-protected metal nanoclusters.

Facet-dependent synthesis of H2O2 from H2 and O2 over single Pt atom-modified Pd nanocrystal catalysts

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is one of the most valuable clean energy sources with a rapidly growing requirement in industry and daily life. The direct synthesis of H2O2 from hydrogen and oxygen is considered to be an economical and environmentally friendly manufacturing route to replace the traditional anthraquinone method, although it remains a formidable challenge owing to low H2O2 selectivity and production. Here, we report a catalyst consisting of Pd(111) nanocrystals on TiO2 modified with single Pt atoms (Pt1Pd(111)/TiO2), which displays outstanding reactivity, producing 1921.3 μmol of H2O2, a H2 conversion of 62.2% and H2O2 selectivity of 80.3% over 30 min. Kinetic and isotope experiments confirm that the extraordinary catalytic properties are due to stronger H2 activation (the rate-determining step). DFT calculations confirm that Pt1Pd(111) exhibits lower energy barriers for H2 dissociation and two-step O2 hydrogenation, but higher energy barriers for side reactions than Pt1Pd(100), demonstrating clear facet dependence and resulting in greater selectivity and amount of H2O2 produced.

Unlocking the Potential: Atomically Thin 2D Fluoritene from Exfoliated Fluorite Ore and Its Electrochemical Activity

Fluorite mineral holds significant importance because of its optoelectronic properties and wide range of applications. Here, we report the successful exfoliation of bulk fluorite ore (calcium fluoride, CaF2) crystals into atomically thin two-dimensional fluoritene (2D CaF2) using a highly scalable liquid-phase exfoliation method. The microscopic and spectroscopy characterizations show the formation of (111) plane-oriented 2D CaF2 sheets with exfoliation-induced material strain due to bond breaking, leading to the changes in lattice parameter. Its potential role in electrocatalysis is further explored for deeper insight, and a probable mechanism is also discussed. The 2D CaF2 with long-term stability shows overpotential values of 670 and 770 mV vs RHE for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), respectively, at 10 mA cm-2. Computational simulations demonstrate the unique "direct-indirect" band gap switching with odd and even numbers of layers. Current work offers new avenues for exploring the structural and electrochemical properties of 2D CaF2 and its potential applicability.

What Elements Really Intercalate into Pd Lattice When Heated in Dimethylformamide?

Palladium hydrides (PdHx) are pivotal in both fundamental research and practical applications across a wide spectrum. PdHx nanocrystals, synthesized by heating in dimethylformamide (DMF), exhibit remarkable stability, granting them widespread applications in the field of electrocatalysis. However, this stability appears inconsistent with their metastable nature. The substantial challenges in characterizing nanoscale structures contribute to the limited understanding of this anomalous phenomenon. Here, through a series of well-conceived experimental designs and advanced characterization techniques, including aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (AC-STEM), in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD), and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS), we have uncovered evidence that indicates the presence of C and N within the lattice of Pd (PdCxNy), rather than H (PdHx). By combining theoretical calculations, we have thoroughly studied the potential configurations and thermodynamic stability of PdCxNy, demonstrating a 2.5:1 ratio of C to N infiltration into the Pd lattice. Furthermore, we successfully modulated the electronic structure of Pd nanocrystals through C and N doping, enhancing their catalytic activity in methanol oxidation reactions. This breakthrough provides a new perspective on the structure and composition of Pd-based nanocrystals infused with light elements, paving the way for the development of advanced catalytic materials in the future.

Insight into the ordering process and ethanol oxidation performance of Au-Pt-Cu ternary alloys

Direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs), which have been widely recognized as nontoxic and green energy conversion devices, show attractive application prospects for liquid hydrogen-carriers, due to the higher specific energy and lower toxicity of ethanol. Pt-based catalysts are widely used in DEFCs, while their poor poisoning resistance highlights the importance of composition and structure optimization. Herein, we synthesized a series of reduced graphene oxide supported ternary alloy AuxPt1-xCu3/rGO (x = 0-1) catalysts with excellent ethanol oxidation performance and a composition-dependent volcano plot trend of the ordering degree was observed and rationalized. The highest Pt-normalized mass activity of Au0.8Pt0.2Cu3/rGO is attributed to the optimized CO binding energy according to DFT calculations. This work not only provides an efficient EOR catalyst based on ordered alloys AuxPt1-xCu3 (x = 0-1), but also offers valuable insight into the role of a third metal in tuning the structure and function of alloys.

Freestanding Penta-Twinned Palladium Nanosheets

Control over the morphology of nanomaterials to have a 2D structure and manipulating the surface strain of nanostructures through defect control have proved to be promising for developing efficient catalysts for sustainable chemical and energy conversion. Here a one-pot aqueous synthesis route of freestanding Pd nanosheets with a penta-twinned structure (PdPT NSs) is presented. The generation of the penta-twinned nanosheet structure can be succeeded by directing the anisotropic growth of Pd under the controlled reduction kinetics of Pd precursors. Experimental and computational investigations showed that the surface atoms of the PdPT NSs are effectively under a compressive environment due to the strain imposed by their twin boundary defects. Due to the twin boundary-induced surface strain as well as the 2D structure of the PdPT NSs, they exhibited highly enhanced electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction compared to Pd nanosheets without a twin boundary, 3D Pd nanocrystals, and commercial Pd/C and Pt/C catalysts.

Activating Inert Crystal Face via Facet-Dependent Quench-Engineering for Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation

Developing a facile strategy to activate the inert crystal face of an electrocatalyst is critical to full-facet utilization, yet still challenging. Herein, the electrocatalytic activity of the inert crystal face is activated by quenching Co3O4 cubes and hexagonal plates with different crystal faces in Fe(NO3)3 solution, and the regulation mechanism of facet-dependent quench-engineering is further revealed. Compared to the Co3O4 cube with exposed {100} facet, the Co3O4 hexagonal plate with exposed {111} facet is more responsive to quenching, accompanied by a rougher surface, richer defect, and more Fe doping. Theoretical calculations indicate that the {111} facet has a more open structure with lower defect formation energy and Fe doping energy, ensuring its electronic and coordination structure is easier to optimize. Therefore, quench-engineering largely increases the catalytic activity of {111) facet for oxygen evolution reaction by 13.2% (the overpotential at 10 mA cm-2 decreases from 380 to 330 mV), while {100} facet only increases by 7.6% (from 393 to 363 mV). The quenched Co3O4 hexagonal plate exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity and stability in both zinc-air battery and water-splitting. The work reveals the influence mechanism of crystal face on quench-engineering and inspires the activation of the inert crystal face.

Synthesis of Monodispersed Pd Nanoparticles and Ultrathin Twisty Pd Nanowire Networks for Electrooxidation of Ethanol

In recent years, preparing precious metal catalysts with a controllable morphology has become a hot research topic for researchers. In this study, monodispersed palladium (Pd) nanoparticles (NP) and ultrathin Pd twisty nanowire networks (TNN) were synthesized in a solvothermal system using N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and oleylamine (OAm) as solvents, Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images reveal the successful synthesis of nanoparticles and ultrathin TNN microstructures. Electrochemical data show that the current densities of Pd-NP and Pd-TNN for the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) reach 1878 mA mg-1 and 1765 mA mg-1, respectively. Compared to commercial Pd/C, Pd-TNN and Pd-NP exhibit better catalytic stability, lower electron transfer barriers, and more resistance to catalyst poisoning. Temperature, pH value, and ethanol concentration are all favorable for the EOR. According to the experimental data, the mechanism of enhanced electrocatalytic activity of Pd-NP and Pd-TNN catalysts for ethanol oxidation is discussed. This paper presents a method for preparing catalysts with stabilized structures to develop Pd-based catalysts for electrocatalytic oxidation reactions.

Lattice engineering of noble metal-based nanomaterials via metal-nonmetal interactions for catalytic applications

Noble metal-based nanomaterials possess outstanding catalytic properties in various chemical reactions. However, the increasing cost of noble metals severely hinders their large-scale applications. A cost-effective strategy is incorporating noble metals with light nonmetal elements (e.g., H, B, C, N, P and S) to form noble metal-based nanocompounds, which can not only reduce the noble metal content, but also promote their catalytic performances by tuning their crystal lattices and introducing additional active sites. In this review, we present a concise overview of the recent advancements in the preparation and application of various kinds of noble metal-light nonmetal binary nanocompounds. Besides introducing synthetic strategies, we focus on the effects of introducing light nonmetal elements on the lattice structures of noble metals and highlight notable progress in the lattice strain engineering of representative core-shell nanostructures derived from these nanocompounds. In the meantime, the catalytic applications of the light element-incorporated noble metal-based nanomaterials are discussed. Finally, we discuss current challenges and future perspectives in the development of noble metal-nonmetal based nanomaterials.

Photochemical engineering unsaturated Pt islands on supported Pd nanocrystals for a robust pH-universal hydrogen evolution reaction

The rational design of heterostructured nanocrystals (HNCs) is of great significance for developing highly efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts. However, a significant challenge still lies in realizing the controllable synthesis of desired HNCs directly onto a support and exploring their structure-activity-dependent HER performance. Herein, we reported various controllable Pd7@Ptx core-shell HNCs with optimal hybrid structures via a photochemical deposition strategy. The growth patterns of a Pt shell can be finely controlled by adjusting the growth kinetics, resulting in a varying deposition rate. In particular, the as-prepared Pd7@Pt3 HNCs with a Pt shell in the Stranski-Krastanov mode showed the best performances over a wide pH range media, delivering low overpotentials of 33, 18 and 49 mV, resulting in a catalytic current density of 10 mA cm-2 at a low effective catalyst loading of 0.021 mg cm-2. The resulting Tafel slopes were 23.1, 52.6 and 42.7 mV dec-1 in 0.5 M H2SO4, 1.0 M phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and 1.0 M KOH electrolyte, respectively. It was found that the increased fraction of unsaturated coordination of Pt islands in the resultant material is the key to the enhanced and robust HER activity, which has been confirmed through density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This strategy could be extended to the rational design and synthesis of other heterostructured catalysts for energy conversion and storage.

Epitaxial Ultrathin Pt Atomic Layers on CrN Nanoparticle Catalysts

The construction of platinum (Pt) atomic layers is an effective strategy to improve the utilization efficiency of Pt atoms in electrocatalysis, thus is important for reducing the capital costs of a wide range of energy storage and conversion devices. However, the substrates used to grow Pt atomic layers are largely limited to noble metals and their alloys, which is not conducive to reducing catalyst costs. Herein, low-cost chromium nitride (CrN) is utilized as a support for the loading of epitaxial ultrathin Pt atomic layers via a simple thermal ammonolysis method. Owing to the strong anchoring and electronic regulation of Pt atomic layers by CrN, the obtained Pt atomic layers catalyst (containing electron-deficient Pt sites) exhibits excellent activity and endurance for the formic acid oxidation reaction, with a mass activity of 5.17 A mgPt -1 that is 13.6 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C catalyst. This novel strategy demonstrates that CrN can replace noble metals as a low-cost substrate for constructing Pt atomic layers catalysts.

Monometallic Ultrasmall Nanocatalysts via Different Valence Atomic Interfaces Boost Hydrogen Evolution Catalysis

Synergistic monometallic nanocatalysts have attracted much attention due to their high intrinsic activity properties. However, current synergistic monometallic nanocatalysts tend to suffer from long reaction paths due to restricted nanoscale interfaces. In this paper, we synthesized the interstitial compound N-Pt/CNT with monometallic atomic interfaces. The catalysts are enriched with atomic interfaces between higher valence Ptδ+ and Pt0, allowing the reaction to proceed synergistically within the same component with an ideal reaction pathway. Through ratio optimization, N2.42-Pt/CNT with a suitable ratio of Ptδ+ and Pt0 is synthesized. And the calculated turnover frequency of N2.42-Pt/CNT is about 37.4 s-1 (-0.1 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)), six times higher than that of the commercial Pt/C (6.58 s-1), which is the most intrinsically active of the Pt-based catalysts. Moreover, prepared N2.42-Pt/CNT exhibits excellent stability during the chronoamperometry tests of 200 h. With insights from comprehensive experiments and theoretical calculations, Pt with different valence states in monometallic atomic interfaces synergistically accelerates the H2O dissociation step and optimizes the Gibbs free energy of H* adsorption. And the existence of desirable hydrogen transfer paths substantially facilitates hydrogen evolution reaction kinetics.

Strain and Shell Thickness Engineering in Pd3 Pb@Pt Bifunctional Electrocatalyst for Ethanol Upgrading Coupled with Hydrogen Production

The ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) is an attractive alternative to the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction in electrochemical hydrogen evolution cells. However, the development of high-performance bifunctional electrocatalysts for both EOR and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a major challenge. Herein, the synthesis of Pd3 Pb@Pt core-shell nanocubes with controlled shell thickness by Pt-seeded epitaxial growth on intermetallic Pd3 Pb cores is reported. The lattice mismatch between the Pd3 Pb core and the Pt shell leads to the expansion of the Pt lattice. The synergistic effects between the tensile strain and the core-shell structures result in excellent electrocatalytic performance of Pd3 Pb@Pt catalysts for both EOR and HER. In particular, Pd3 Pb@Pt with three Pt atomic layers shows a mass activity of 8.60 A mg-1 Pd+Pt for ethanol upgrading to acetic acid and close to 100% of Faradic efficiency for HER. An EOR/HER electrolysis system is assembled using Pd3 Pb@Pt for both the anode and cathode, and it is shown that low cell voltage of 0.75 V is required to reach a current density of 10 mA cm-2 . The present work offers a promising strategy for the development of bifunctional catalysts for hybrid electrocatalytic reactions and beyond.

Improving Alkaline Hydrogen Oxidation through Dynamic Lattice Hydrogen Migration in Pd@Pt Core-Shell Electrocatalysts

Tracking the trajectory of hydrogen intermediates during hydrogen electro-catalysis is beneficial for designing synergetic multi-component catalysts with division of chemical labor. Herein, we demonstrate a novel dynamic lattice hydrogen (LH) migration mechanism that leads to two orders of magnitude increase in the alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) activity on Pd@Pt over pure Pd, even ≈31.8 times mass activity enhancement than commercial Pt. Specifically, the polarization-driven electrochemical hydrogenation process from Pd@Pt to PdHx @Pt by incorporating LH allows more surface vacancy Pt sites to increase the surface H coverage. The inverse dehydrogenation process makes PdHx as an H reservoir, providing LH migrates to the surface of Pt and participates in the HOR. Meanwhile, the formation of PdHx induces electronic effect, lowering the energy barrier of rate-determining Volmer step, thus resulting in the HOR kinetics on Pd@Pt being proportional to the LH concentration in the in situ formed PdHx @Pt. Moreover, this dynamic catalysis mechanism would open up the catalysts scope for hydrogen electro-catalysis.

Constructing a CrCoNi medium entropy alloy coordinated Pt ultrathin film as durable electrocatalysts for methanol oxidation reaction

As high-efficiency anode methanol oxidation catalysts, platinum-based materials have always occupied a dominant place since the inception of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). However, because of the strong adsorption of intermediates, Pt-active centers are easily poisoned and induce serious activity loss. Here, we investigate the same commonality of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) mechanism in Pt/CrCoNi complex catalysts and establish a relationship between them to help screen appropriate synergistic materials and reduce activity loss. With this strategy, the OER activity of Pt/CrCoNi is modified via temperature and oxygen pressure control, and the OER overpotential and MOR durability show a positive correlation. The MOR performance of the final optimized Pt/CrCoNi (7.5-225 Torr oxygen pressure and 400 °C annealing, OA) film reaches an advanced level in the Pt-based MOR catalysts and shows a mass activity of 3785 A gPt-1, as well as a good durability of 50000 s in the alkaline solution.

Nanostructure engineering of Pt/Pd-based oxygen reduction reaction electrocatalysts

Increasing the atomic utilization of Pt and Pd elements is the key to the advancement and broad dissemination of fuel cells. Central to this task is the design and fabrication of highly active and stable Pt- or Pd-based electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which requires a comprehensive understanding of the ORR pathways and mechanism. Past endeavors have accumulated a wealth of knowledge about the Pt/Pd-based ORR electrocatalysts based on structure engineering, while a systematic review of the nanostructure engineering of Pt/Pd-based ORR electrocatalysts has been rarely reported. In this review, we provide a systematic discussion about the current status of Pt/Pd-based ORR electrocatalysts from the perspective of nanostructure engineering, and we highlight the ORR pathways, mechanisms and theories in order to understand the ORR in a more complex nanocatalyst. Particularly, the underlying structure-function relationship of Pt/Pd-based ORR electrocatalysts is specifically highlighted, which will guide the future synthesis of more efficient ORR electrocatalysts.

Origin and Formation Mechanism of Carbon Shell-Encapsulated Metal Nanoparticles for Powerful Fuel Cell Durability

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) face technical issues of performance degradation due to catalyst dissolution and agglomeration in real-world operations. To address these challenges, intensive research has been recently conducted to introduce additional structural units on the catalyst surface. Among various concepts for surface modification, carbon shell encapsulation is known to be a promising strategy since the carbon shell can act as a protective layer for metal nanoparticles. As an interesting approach to form carbon shells on catalyst surfaces, the precursor ligand-induced formation is preferred due to its facile synthesis and tunable control over the carbon shell porosity. However, the origin of the carbon source and the carbon shell formation mechanism have not been studied in depth yet. Herein, this study aims to investigate carbon sources through the use of different precursors and the introduction of new methodologies related to the ligand exchange phenomenon. Subsequently, we provide new insights into the carbon shell formation mechanism using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Finally, the thermal stability and electrochemical durability of carbon shells are thoroughly investigated through in situ transmission electron microscopy (in situ TEM) and accelerated durability tests.

Unraveling the Dynamic Processes of Methanol Electrooxidation at Isolated Rhodium Sites by In Situ Electrochemical Scanning Tunneling Microscopy

Materials with isolated single-atom Rh-N4 sites are emerging as promising and compelling catalysts for methanol electrooxidation. Herein, we carried out an in situ electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (ECSTM) investigation of the dynamic processes of methanol absorption and catalytic conversion in the rhodium octaethylporphyrin (RhOEP)-catalyzed methanol oxidation reaction at the molecular scale. The high-contrast RhOEP-CH3OH complex formed by methanol adsorption was visualized distinctly in the STM images. The Rh-C adsorption configuration of methanol on isolated rhodium sites was identified on the basis of a series of control experiments and theoretical simulation. The adsorption energy of methanol on RhOEP was obtained from quantitative analysis. In situ ECSTM experiments present an explicit description of the transformation of the intermediate species in the catalytic process. By qualitatively evaluating the rate constants of different stages in the reaction at the microscopic level, we considered the CO transformation/desorption as the critical step for determining the reaction dynamics. Methanol adsorption was found to be correlated with RhOEP oxidation in the initial stage of the reaction, and the dynamic information was revealed unambiguously by in situ potential step experiments. This work provides microscopic results for the catalytic mechanism of Rh-N4 sites for methanol electrooxidation, which is instructive for the rational design of the high-performance catalyst.

Atomically Dispersed CrOX on Pd Metallene for CO-Resistant Methanol Oxidation

The effective design and construction of high-performance methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) electrocatalysts are significant for the development of direct methanol fuel cells. But the active sites of the MOR electrocatalysts are susceptible to being poisoned by CO, resulting in poor durability. Herein, we report an atomically dispersed CrOX species anchored on Pd metallene through bridging O atoms. This catalyst shows an outstanding MOR performance with 7 times higher mass activity and 100 mV lower CO electrooxidation potential than commercial Pd/C. The results of operando electrochemical Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy demonstrate the rapid removal of CO* on CrOX-Pd metallene. Theoretical calculations reveal that atomically dispersed CrOX can lower the adsorption energy of CO* on Pd sites and enhance that of OH* through the formation of a hydrogen bond, decreasing the formation energy of COOH*. This work provides a new strategy for improving MOR performance via atomically engineering oxide/metal interfaces.

Recent advances of H-intercalated Pd-based nanocatalysts for electrocatalytic reactions

The intercalation of H into Pd-based nanocatalysts plays a crucial role in optimizing the catalytic performance by tailoring the structural and electronic properties. We herein present a comprehensive review about the recent progress of interstitial hydrogen atom modified Pd-based nanocatalysts for various energy-related electrocatalytic reactions. Before systematically manifesting the great potential of Pd-based hydrides for electrocatalytic applications, we have briefly illustrated the synthesis strategies and corresponding mechanisms for the Pd-based hydrides. This is followed by a comprehensive discussion about the fundamentals and functions of H intercalation in tailoring their physicochemical and electrochemical properties. Subsequently, we focus on the widespread application of Pd-based hydrides for electrocatalytic reactions, with the emphasis on the role of H intercalation played in determining electrocatalytic performance. Finally, the future direction and perspectives regarding the development of more efficient Pd-based hydrides are also manifested.

Defect Rich Structure Activated 3D Palladium Catalyst for Methanol Oxidation Reaction

Controlling the structure and properties of catalysts through atomic arrangement is the source of producing a new generation of advanced catalysts. A highly active and stable catalyst in catalytic reactions strongly depends on an ideal arrangement structure of metal atoms. We demonstrated that the introduction of the defect-rich structures, low coordination number (CN), and tensile strain in three-dimensional (3D) urchin-like palladium nanoparticles through chlorine bonded with sp-C in graphdiyne (Pd-UNs/Cl-GDY) can regulate the arrangement of metal atoms in the palladium nanoparticles to form a special structure. In situ Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and theoretical calculation results show that Pd-UNs/Cl-GDY catalyst is beneficial to the oxidation and removal of CO intermediates. The Pd-UNs/Cl-GDY for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) that display high current density (363.6 mA cm-2 ) and mass activity (3.6 A mgPd -1 ), 12.0 and 10.9 times higher than Pd nanoparticles, respectively. The Pd-UNs/Cl-GDY catalyst also exhibited robust stability with still retained 95 % activity after 2000 cycles. A defects libraries of the face-centered cubic and hexagonal close-packed crystal catalysts (FH-NPs) were synthesized by introducing chlorine in graphdiyne. Such defect-rich structures, low CN, and tensile strain tailoring methods have opened up a new way for the catalytic reaction of MOR.

Low-Dimensional High-Entropy Alloys for Advanced Electrocatalytic Reactions

Low-dimensional high-entropy alloy (HEA) nanomaterials are widely employed as electrocatalysts for energy conversion reactions, due to their inherent advantages, including high electron mobility, rich catalytically active site, optimal electronic structure. Moreover, the high-entropy, lattice distortion, and sluggish diffusion effects also enable them to be promising electrocatalysts. A thorough understanding on the structure-activity relationships of low-dimensional HEA catalyst play a huge role in the future pursuit of more efficient electrocatalysts. In this review, we summarize the recent progress of low-dimensional HEA nanomaterials for efficient catalytic energy conversion. By systematically discussing the fundamentals of HEA and properties of low-dimensional nanostructures, we highlight the advantages of low-dimensional HEAs. Subsequently, we also present many low-dimensional HEA catalysts for electrocatalytic reactions, aiming to gain a better understanding on the structure-activity relationship. Finally, a series of upcoming challenges and issues are also thoroughly proposed as well as their future directions.

Lattice Compression Revealed at the ≈1 nm Scale

Lattice tuning at the ≈1 nm scale is fascinating and challenging; for instance, lattice compression at such a minuscule scale has not been observed. The lattice compression might also bring about some unusual properties, which waits to be verified. Through ligand induction, we herein achieve the lattice compression in a ≈1 nm gold nanocluster for the first time, as detected by the single-crystal X-ray crystallography. In a freshly synthesized Au52 (CHT)28 (CHT=S-c-C6 H11 ) nanocluster, the lattice distance of the (110) facet is found to be compressed from 4.51 to 3.58 Å at the near end. However, the lattice distances of the (111) and (100) facets show no change in different positions. The lattice-compressed nanocluster exhibits superior electrocatalytic activity for the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2 RR) compared to that exhibited by the same-sized Au52 (TBBT)32 (TBBT=4-tert-butyl-benzenethiolate) nanocluster and larger Au nanocrystals without lattice variation, indicating that lattice tuning is an efficient method for tailoring the properties of metal nanoclusters. Further theoretical calculations explain the high CO2 RR performance of the lattice-compressed Au52 (CHT)28 and provide a correlation between its structure and catalytic activity.

Nitrogen-intercalated Pd metallene nanoribbons with optimized electronic structure for oxygen reduction catalysis

Herein, we propose nitrogen (N)-intercalated Pd metallene nanoribbons (N-Pd MNRs), which exhibit favorable and stable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance in alkaline media. The ultrathin configuration of the N-Pd MNRs exposes more atoms, thus acting as active sites. More importantly, N intercalation triggers electronic interaction between Pd and N to establish Pd-N bonds and induces lattice strain, which optimizes the electronic structure of the metallene nanoribbons, thereby modulating the binding strength between the intermediates and active sites. This work offers new insights into the rational design of N intercalated metallene nanoribbons for efficient ORR catalysis.

Length-tunable Pd2Sn@Pt core-shell nanorods for enhanced ethanol electrooxidation with concurrent hydrogen production

The electrooxidation of ethanol as an alternative to the oxygen evolution reaction presents a promising approach for low-cost hydrogen production. However, the design and synthesis of efficient ethanol oxidation electrocatalysts remain key challenges. Here, a colloidal procedure is developed to prepare Pd2Sn@Pt core-shell nanorods with an expanded Pt lattice and tunable length. The obtained Pd2Sn@Pt catalysts exhibit superior activity and stability for ethanol electrooxidation compared to Pd2Sn and commercial Pt/C catalysts. By tuning the length of the Pd2Sn@Pt nanorods, remarkable mass activity of up to 4.75 A mgPd+Pt-1 and specific activity of 20.14 mA cm-2 are achieved for the short nanorods owing to their large specific surface area. A hybrid electrolysis system for ethanol oxidation and hydrogen evolution is constructed using Pd2Sn@Pt as the anodic catalyst and Pt mesh as the cathode. The system requires a low cell voltage of 0.59 V for the simultaneous production of acetic acid and hydrogen at a current density of 10 mA cm-2. Density functional theory calculations further reveal that the strained Pt shell reduces energy barriers in the ethanol electrooxidation pathway, facilitating the conversion of ethanol to acetic acid. This work provides valuable guidance for developing highly efficient ethanol electrooxidation catalysts for integrated hydrogen production systems.

Abundant Exterior/Interior Active Sites Enable Three-Dimensional PdPtBiTe Dumbbells C-C Cleavage Electrocatalysts for Actual Alcohol Fuel Cells

Developing high-activity electrocatalysts is of great significance for the commercialization of direct alcohol fuel cells (DAFCs), but it still faces challenges. Herein, three-dimensional (3D) porous PdPtBiTe dumbbells (DBs) were successfully fabricated via the visible photoassisted method. The alloying effect, defect-rich surface/interface and nanoscale cavity, and open pores make the 3D PdPtBiTe DBs a comprehensive and remarkable electrocatalyst for the C1-C3 alcohol (ethanol, ethylene glycol, glycerol, and methanol) oxidation reaction (EOR, EGOR, GOR, and MOR, respectively) in an alkaline electrolyte, and the results of in situ Fourier transform infrared spectra revealed a superior C-C bond cleavage ability. The 3D PdPtBiTe DBs exhibit ultrahigh EOR, EGOR, GOR, and MOR mass activities of 25.4, 23.2, 16.8, and 18.3 A mgPd + Pt-1, respectively, considerably surpassing those of the commercial Pt/C and Pd/C. Moreover, the mass peak power densities of 3D PdPtBiTe DBs in actual ethanol, ethylene glycol, glycerol, or methanol fuel cells increase to 409.5, 501.5, 558.0, or 601.3 mW mgPd + Pt-1 in O2, respectively. This study provides a new class of multimetallic nanomaterials as state-of-the-art multifunctional anode electrocatalysts for actual DAFCs.

Bismuth Incorporation in Palladium Hydride for the Electrocatalytic Ethanol Oxidation with Enhanced CO Tolerance

Introducing nonmetal and oxophilic metal into palladium (Pd)-based catalysts is beneficial for boosting electrocatalysis, especially regarding the improvement of mass activity (MA) and CO tolerance. Herein, the stable bismuth-doped palladium hydride (Bi/PdH) networks have been successfully fabricated through a simple one-step method. The intercalation of interstitial H atoms expands the lattice of Pd, and the doping of oxophilic metal Bi restrains the adsorption of poisonous intermediates on the surface of Pd, thereby improving the activity and durability of the as-prepared catalysts in the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR). The obtained Bi/PdH networks manifest a remarkable MA of 8.51 A·mgPd-1, which is 11.18 times higher than that of commercial Pd/C (0.76 A·mgPd-1). The CO-stripping analysis results indicate that Bi doping can significantly prohibit CO adsorption on the surface of the Bi/PdH networks. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations also reveal that Bi doping enhances the OH* adsorption on the catalyst surface and mitigates the interaction between Pd and CO* intermediates, providing deeper insights into the origin of the enhanced EOR activity and CO tolerance. This work describes an impactful path for producing high-performance and durable PdH-based nanocatalysts.

Lattice-Strain Engineering for Heterogenous Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution Reaction

The energy efficiency of metal-air batteries and water-splitting techniques is severely constrained by multiple electronic transfers in the heterogenous oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and the high overpotential induced by the sluggish kinetics has become an uppermost scientific challenge. Numerous attempts are devoted to enabling high activity, selectivity, and stability via tailoring the surface physicochemical properties of nanocatalysts. Lattice-strain engineering as a cutting-edge method for tuning the electronic and geometric configuration of metal sites plays a pivotal role in regulating the interaction of catalytic surfaces with adsorbate molecules. By defining the d-band center as a descriptor of the structure-activity relationship, the individual contribution of strain effects within state-of-the-art electrocatalysts can be systematically elucidated in the OER optimization mechanism. In this review, the fundamentals of the OER and the advancements of strain-catalysts are showcased and the innovative trigger strategies are enumerated, with particular emphasis on the feedback mechanism between the precise regulation of lattice-strain and optimal activity. Subsequently, the modulation of electrocatalysts with various attributes is categorized and the impediments encountered in the practicalization of strained effect are discussed, ending with an outlook on future research directions for this burgeoning field.

Engineering metallenes for boosting electrocatalytic biomass-oxidation-assisted hydrogen evolution reaction

Metallenes exhibit great potential for catalytic reaction, particularly for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and biomass oxidation reaction, due to their favorable electronic configurations, ultrahigh specific surface areas, and highly accessible surface atoms. Therefore, metallenes can function as bifunctional electrocatalysts to boost the energy-saving biomass-oxidation-assisted HER, and have attracted great interest. Given the growing importance of green hydrogen as an alternative energy source in recent years, it is timely and imperative to summarize the recent progress and current status of metallene-based catalysts for the biomass-oxidation-assisted HER. Here, we review the recent advances in metallenes in terms of composition and structural regulations including alloying, nonmetal doping, defect engineering, surface functionalization, and heterostructure engineering strategies and their applications in driving electrocatalytic HER, with special focus on biomass-oxidation-assisted hydrogen production. The underlying structure-activity relationship and mechanisms are also comprehensively discussed. Finally, we also propose the challenges and future directions of metallene-based catalysts for the applications in biomass-oxidation-assisted HER.

Pt-functionalized Amorphous RuOx as Excellent Stability and High-activity Catalysts for Low Temperature MEMS Sensors

The unsaturated coordination and abundant active sites endow amorphous metals with tremendous potential in improving metal oxide semiconductors' gas-sensing properties. However, the amorphous materials maintain the metastable status and easily transfer into the lower-active crystals during the gas-sensing process at high working temperatures, significantly limiting their further applications. Here, a bimetal amorphous PtRu catalyst is developed by accurately regulating the introduction of Pt species into amorphous RuOx supports to realize the highly active and stable H2 S gas-sensing detection. It is found that incorporation of low-concentration Pt species can effectively maintain the amorphous state of initial RuOx and delay the crystallization temperature as high as 100 °C. Further, ex situ XPS and in situ Raman spectroscopy analysis confirm that active Pt species can facilitate H2 S adsorption by strong Pt-S coordination and dissociate the sulfur species to the surrounding support, which contribute to the chemisorption and sensitization of H2 S. Meanwhile, electron transport at the interface between Pt, RuOx and ZnO further activates the reaction process at the surface of the gas-sensitive material. The final PtRu-modified ZnO (PtRu/ZnO) sensor enables the detection of H2 S in the ultra-low concentration range of 15-2000 ppb with remarkable stability.

Precise Strain Tuning Boosts Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Generation

Strain engineering has been utilized as an effective approach to regulate the binding of reaction intermediates and modify catalytic behavior on noble metal nanocatalysts. However, the continuous, precise control of strain for a depiction of strain-activity correlation remains a challenge. Herein, Pd-based nanooctahedrons coated with two Ir overlayers are constructed, and subject to different postsynthetic treatments to alter the amount of H intercalated into Pd core for achieving three different surface strains (o-Pd/Ir-1.2%, o-Pd/Ir-1.7%, and o-Pd/Ir-2.1% NPs). It is demonstrated that the catalytic performances of o-Pd/Ir NPs display a volcano-shaped curve against strains toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Specifically, o-Pd/Ir-1.7% NPs exhibit superior catalytic performance with a mass activity of 9.38 A mgIr -1 at -0.02 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode, 10.8- and 18.8-fold higher than those of commercial Pt/C and Ir/C, respectively, making it one of the most active HER electrocatalysts reported to date. Density function theory calculations verify that the moderate tensile strain on Ir(111) surfaces plays a pivotal role in optimizing the H binding energy. This work highlights a new strategy for precise control over the surface strain of nanocrystals for more efficient electrocatalysis.

Preventing the Galvanic Replacement Reaction toward Unconventional Bimetallic Core-Shell Nanostructures

A bimetallic core-shell nanostructure is a versatile platform for achieving intriguing optical and catalytic properties. For a long time, this core-shell nanostructure has been limited to ones with noble metal cores. Otherwise, a galvanic replacement reaction easily occurs, leading to hollow nanostructures or completely disintegrated ones. In the past few years, great efforts have been devoted to preventing the galvanic replacement reaction, thus creating an unconventional class of core-shell nanostructures, each containing a less-stable-metal core and a noble metal shell. These new nanostructures have been demonstrated to show unique optical and catalytic properties. In this work, we first briefly summarize the strategies for synthesizing this type of unconventional core-shell nanostructures, such as the delicately designed thermodynamic control and kinetic control methods. Then, we discuss the effects of the core-shell nanostructure on the stabilization of the core nanocrystals and the emerging optical and catalytic properties. The use of the nanostructure for creating hollow/porous nanostructures is also discussed. At the end of this review, we discuss the remaining challenges associated with this unique core-shell nanostructure and provide our perspectives on the future development of the field.

A Surfactant-Free and General Strategy for the Synthesis of Bimetallic Core-Shell Nanocrystals on Reduced Graphene Oxide through Targeted Photodeposition

Tunable physicochemical properties of bimetallic core-shell heterostructured nanocrystals (HNCs) have shown enormous potential in electrocatalytic reactions. In many cases, HNCs are required to load on supports to inhibit catalyst aggregation. However, the introduction of supports during the process of growing core-shell HNCs makes the synthesis much more complicated and difficult to control precisely. Herein, we reported a universal photochemical synthetic strategy for the controlled synthesis of well-defined surfactant-free core-shell metal HNCs on a reduced graphene oxide (rGO) support, which was assisted by the fine control of photogenerated electrons directly transferring to the targeted metal seeds via rGO and the precisely tuned adsorption capacity of the added second metal precursors. The surface photovoltage microscopy (SPVM) platform proved that photogenerated electrons flowed through rGO to Pd particles under illumination. We have successfully synthesized 24 different core-shell metal HNCs, i.,e., M_A@M_B (M_A = Pd, Au, and Pt; M_B = Au, Ag, Pt, Pd, Ir, Ru, Rh, Ni and Cu), on the rGO supports. The as-prepared Pd@Cu core-shell HNCs showed outstanding performance in the electrocatalytic reduction of CO₂ to CH₄. This work could shed light on the controlled synthesis of more functional bimetallic nanostructured materials on diverse supports for various applications.

Engineering a Heterophase Interface by Tailoring the Pt Coverage Density on an Amorphous Ru Surface for Ultrasensitive H2S Detection

Amorphous/crystalline heterophase engineering is emerging as an attractive strategy to adjust the properties and functions of nanomaterials. Here, we reveal a heterophase interface role by precisely tailoring the crystalline Pt coverage density on an amorphous Ru surface (cPt/aRu) for ultrasensitive H2S detection. We found that when the atomic ratio of Pt/Ru increased from 10 to 50%, the loading modes of Pt changed from island coverage (1cPt/aRu) to cross-linkable coverage (3cPt/aRu) and further to dense coverage (5cPt/aRu). The differences in coverage models further regulate the chemical adsorption of H2S on Pt and the electronic transformation process on Ru, which can be proved by ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy experiments. Notably, a special cross-linkable coverage 3cPt/aRu on ZnO shows the best gas-sensitive performance, in which the operating temperature reduces from 240 to 160 °C compared with pristine ZnO and the selectivity coefficient for H2S gas improves from ∼1.2 to ∼4.6. This is mainly benefit from the maximized exposure of the amorphous/crystalline heterophase interface. Our work thus provides a new platform for future applications of amorphous/crystalline heterogeneous nanostructures in gas sensors and catalysis.

Palladium metallene confined on MXene with increased hydroxyl binding strength for highly efficient ethanol electrooxidation

Rational design and synthesis of high-performance electrocatalysts for ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) is crucial to large-scale commercialization of direct ethanol fuel cells, but it is still an incredible challenge. Herein, a unique Pd metallene/Ti3C2Tx MXene (Pdene/Ti3C2Tx)-supported electrocatalyst is constructed via an in-situ growth approach for high-efficiency EOR. The resulting Pdene/Ti3C2Tx catalyst achieves an ultrahigh mass activity of 7.47 A mgPd-1 under alkaline condition, as well as high tolerance to CO poisoning. In situ attenuated total reflection-infrared spectroscopy studies combined with density functional theory calculations reveal that the excellent EOR activity of Pdene/Ti3C2Tx catalyst is attributed to the unique and stable interfaces which reduce the reaction energy barrier of *CH3CO intermediate oxidation and facilitate oxidative removal of CO poisonous species by increasing the Pd-OH binding strength.

Improving the Hydrogen Oxidation Reaction Rate of Ru by Active Hydrogen in the Ultrathin Pd Interlayer

Enhancing the catalytic activity of Ru metal in the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) potential range, improving the insufficient activity of Ru caused by its oxophilicity, is of great significance for reducing the cost of anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). Here, we use Ru grown on Au@Pd as a model system to understand the underlying mechanism for activity improvement by combining direct in situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) evidence of the catalytic reaction intermediate (OH_ad) with in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD), electrochemical characterization, as well as DFT calculations. The results showed that the Au@Pd@Ru nanocatalyst utilizes the hydrogen storage capacity of the Pd interlayer to "temporarily" store the activated hydrogen enriched at the interface, which spontaneously overflows at the "hydrogen-deficient interface" to react with OH_ad adsorbed on Ru. It is the essential reason for the enhanced catalytic activity of Ru at anodic potential. This work deepens our understanding of the HOR mechanism and provides new ideas for the rational design of advanced electrocatalysts.

Probing the atomically diffuse interfaces in Pd@Pt core-shell nanoparticles in three dimensions

Deciphering the three-dimensional atomic structure of solid-solid interfaces in core-shell nanomaterials is the key to understand their catalytical, optical and electronic properties. Here, we probe the three-dimensional atomic structures of palladium-platinum core-shell nanoparticles at the single-atom level using atomic resolution electron tomography. We quantify the rich structural variety of core-shell nanoparticles with heteroepitaxy in 3D at atomic resolution. Instead of forming an atomically-sharp boundary, the core-shell interface is found to be atomically diffuse with an average thickness of 4.2 Å, irrespective of the particle's morphology or crystallographic texture. The high concentration of Pd in the diffusive interface is highly related to the free Pd atoms dissolved from the Pd seeds, which is confirmed by atomic images of Pd and Pt single atoms and sub-nanometer clusters using cryogenic electron microscopy. These results advance our understanding of core-shell structures at the fundamental level, providing potential strategies into precise nanomaterial manipulation and chemical property regulation.

Nano Si-Doped Ruthenium Oxide Particles from Caged Precursors for High-Performance Acidic Oxygen Evolution

RuO₂ is well known as the benchmark acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst, but its practical application has been impeded by its limited durability. Herein, it is presented that the stability of ruthenium oxide can be significantly improved by pretrapping RuCl₃ precursors within a cage compound possessing 72 aromatic rings, which leads to well carbon-coated RuO_x particles (Si-RuO_x @C) after calcination. The catalyst survives in 0.5 M H₂ SO₄ for an unprecedented period of 100 hours at 10 mA cm^-2 with minimal overpotential change during OER. In contrast, RuO_x prepared from similar non-tied compounds doesn't exhibit such catalytic activity, highlighting the importance of the preorganization of Ru precursors within the cage prior to calcination. In addition, the overpotential at 10 mA cm^-2 in acid solution is only 220 mV, much less than that of commercial RuO₂ . X-ray absorption fine structure (FT-EXAFS) reveals the Si doping through unusual Ru-Si bond, and density functional theory (DFT) calculation reveals the importance of the Ru-Si bond in enhancing both the activity and stability of the catalyst.

Subnanoscale Dual-Site Pd-Pt Layers Make PdPtCu Nanocrystals CO-Tolerant Bipolar Effective Electrocatalysts for Alcohol Fuel Cell Devices

Finding a high-performance low-Pt bipolar electrocatalyst in actual direct alcohol fuel cells (DAFCs) remains challenging and desirable. Here, we developed a crystalline PdPtCu@amorphous subnanometer Pd-Pt "dual site" layer core-shell structure for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and alcohol (methanol, ethylene glycol, glycerol, and their mixtures) oxidation reaction (AOR) in an alkaline electrolyte (denoted D-PdPtCu). The prepared D-PdPtCu/C achieved a direct 4-electron ORR pathway, a full oxidation pathway for AOR, and high CO tolerance. The ORR mass activity (MA) of D-PdPtCu/C delivered a 52.8- or 59.3-fold increase over commercial Pt/C or Pd/C, respectively, and no activity loss after 20000 cycles. The D-PdPtCu/C also exhibited much higher AOR MA and stability than Pt/C or Pd/C. Density functional theory revealed the intrinsic nature of a subnanometer Pd-Pt "dual site" surface for ORR and AOR activity enhancement. The D-PdPtCu/C as an effective bipolar electrocatalyst yielded higher peak power densities than commercial Pt/C in actual DAFCs.

Shape-Controlled Synthesis of Platinum-Based Nanocrystals and Their Electrocatalytic Applications in Fuel Cells

To achieve environmentally benign energy conversion with the carbon neutrality target via electrochemical reactions, the innovation of electrocatalysts plays a vital role in the enablement of renewable resources. Nowadays, Pt-based nanocrystals (NCs) have been identified as one class of the most promising candidates to efficiently catalyze both the half-reactions in hydrogen- and hydrocarbon-based fuel cells. Here, we thoroughly discuss the key achievement in developing shape-controlled Pt and Pt-based NCs, and their electrochemical applications in fuel cells. We begin with a mechanistic discussion on how the morphology can be precisely controlled in a colloidal system, followed by highlighting the advanced development of shape-controlled Pt, Pt-alloy, Pt-based core@shell NCs, Pt-based nanocages, and Pt-based intermetallic compounds. We then select some case studies on models of typical reactions (oxygen reduction reaction at the cathode and small molecular oxidation reaction at the anode) that are enhanced by the shape-controlled Pt-based nanocatalysts. Finally, we provide an outlook on the potential challenges of shape-controlled nanocatalysts and envision their perspective with suggestions.

Spatially Confined PdHx Metallenes by Tensile Strained Atomic Ru Layers for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution

Hydride metallenes show great potential for hydrogen-related catalytic applications due to favorable electronic structures modulated by interstitial hydrogen atoms and large active surface areas of metallenes. Metallene nanostructures generally have compressive strain relative to bulk, which can affect both the stability and the catalytic behavior of hydride metallenes but in general cannot be controlled. Here, we demonstrate highly stable PdH_x metallenes with a tensile strained Ru surface layer and reveal the spatial confinement effect of the Ru skin by multiple spectroscopic characterizations and molecular dynamics simulations. These PdH_x@Ru metallenes with a 4.5% expanded Ru outer layer exhibit outstanding alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction activity with a low overpotential of 30 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 and robust stability with negligible activity decay after 10,000 cycles, which are superior to commercial Pt/C and most reported Ru-based electrocatalysts. Control experiments and first-principles calculations reveal that the tensile strained Ru outer layer lowers the energy barrier of H₂O dissociation and provides a moderate hydrogen adsorption energy.

Structurally-supported PtCuCo nanoframes as efficient bifunctional catalysts for oxygen reduction and methanol oxidation reactions

Developing highly durable and active catalysts with the morphology of structurally robust nanoframes toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) in acidic environment is crucial but still a great challenge to completely achieve in a single material. Herein, PtCuCo nanoframes (PtCuCo NFs) with internal support structures as enhanced bifunctional electrocatalysts were prepared by a facile one-pot approach. PtCuCo NFs exhibited remarkable activity and durability for ORR and MOR owing to the ternary compositions and the structure-fortifying frame structures. Impressively, the specific/mass activity of PtCuCo NFs were 12.8/7.5 times as large as that of commercial Pt/C for ORR in perchloric acid solution. For MOR in sulfuric acid solution, the mass/specific activity of PtCuCo NFs was 1.66 A mg_Pt^-1/4.24 mA cm^-2, which was 5.4/9.4 times as large as that of Pt/C. This work may provide a promising nanoframe material to develop dual catalysts for fuel cells.

Ethane Dehydrogenation over the Core-Shell Pt-Based Alloy Catalysts: Driven by Engineering the Shell Composition and Thickness

Pt-based catalysts as the commercial catalysts in ethane dehydrogenation (EDH) face one of the main challenges of realizing the balance between coke formation and catalytic activity. In this work, a strategy to drive the catalytic performance of EDH on Pt-Sn alloy catalysts is proposed by rationally engineering the shell surface structure and thickness of core-shell Pt@Pt₃Sn and Pt₃Sn@Pt catalysts from a theoretical perspective. Eight types of Pt@Pt₃Sn and Pt₃Sn@Pt catalysts with different Pt and Pt₃Sn shell thicknesses are considered and compared with the industrially used Pt and Pt₃Sn catalysts. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations completely describe the reaction network of EDH, including the side reactions of deep dehydrogenation and C-C bond cracking. Kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) simulations reveal the influences of the catalyst surface structure, experimentally related temperatures, and reactant partial pressures. The results show that CHCH* is the main precursor for coke formation, and Pt@Pt₃Sn catalysts generally have higher C₂H₄(g) activity and lower selectivity compared to those of Pt₃Sn@Pt catalysts, which is attributed to the unique surface geometrical and electronic properties. 1Pt₃Sn@4Pt and 1Pt@4Pt₃Sn are screened out as catalysts exhibiting excellent performance; especially, the 1Pt₃Sn@4Pt catalyst has much higher C₂H₄(g) activity and 100% C₂H₄(g) selectivity compared to those of 1Pt@4Pt₃Sn and the widely used Pt and Pt₃Sn catalysts. The two descriptors C₂H₅* adsorption energy and reaction energy of its dehydrogenation to C₂H₄* are proposed to qualitatively evaluate the C₂H₄(g) selectivity and activity, respectively. This work facilitates a valuable exploration for optimizing the catalytic performance of core-shell Pt-based catalysts in EDH and reveals the great importance of the fine control of the catalyst shell surface structure and thickness.

Pd-Based Metallenes for Fuel Cell Reactions

Pd-based metallenes, atomically thin layers composed primarily of under-coordinated Pd atoms, have emerged as the newest members in the family of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials. Moreover, the unique physiochemical properties, high intrinsic activity associated with metallenes coupled with the ease of applying chemical modifications result in great potential in catalyst engineering for fuel cell reactions. Especially in recent years, interest in Pd-based metallenes is growing, as evidenced by surge in available literatures. Herein, we have reviewed the recent findings achieved in Pd-based metallenes in fuel cells by highlighting the technologies available for deriving metallenes and manifesting the modification strategies for designing them to better suit the application demand. Moreover, we also discuss the perspective insights of Pd-based metallenes for fuel cells regarding the surfactant-free synthesis method, strain engineering, constructing high-entropy alloy, and so on.
