Abstract
Low-dimensional materials exhibit unique quantum confinement effects and morphologies as a result of their nanoscale size in one or more dimensions, making them exhibit distinctive physical properties compared to bulk counterparts. Among all low-dimensional materials, due to their atomic level thickness, two-dimensional materials possess extremely large shape anisotropy and consequently are speculated to have large optically anisotropic absorption. In this work, we demonstrate an optoelectronic device based on the combination of two-dimensional material and carbon dot with wide bandgap. High-efficient luminescence of carbon dot and extremely large shape anisotropy (>1500) of two-dimensional material with the wide bandgap of >4 eV cooperatively endow the optoelectronic device with multi-functions of optically anisotropic blue-light emission, visible light modulation, wavelength-dependent ultraviolet-light detection as well as blue fluorescent film assemble. This research opens new avenues for constructing multi-function-integrated optoelectronic devices via the combination of nanomaterials with different dimensions.

Abstract
Birefringence is a fundamental optical property that can induce phase retardation of polarized light. Tuning the birefringence of liquid crystals is a core technology for light manipulation in current applications in the visible and infrared spectral regions. Due to the strong absorption or instability of conventional liquid crystals in deep-ultraviolet light, tunable birefringence remains elusive in this region, notwithstanding its significance in diverse applications. Here we show a stable and birefringence-tunable deep-ultraviolet modulator based on two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride. It has an extremely large optical anisotropy factor of 6.5 × 10-12 C2 J-1 m-1 that gives rise to a specific magneto-optical Cotton-Mouton coefficient of 8.0 × 106 T-2 m-1, which is about five orders of magnitude higher than other potential deep-ultraviolet-transparent media. The large coefficient, high stability (retention rate of 99.7% after 270 cycles) and wide bandgap of boron nitride collectively enable the fabrication of stable deep-ultraviolet modulators with magnetically tunable birefringence.

Abstract
Reported here is a multi-response anisotropic poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) hydrogel developed by using a rotating magnetic field to align magnetic double stacks (MDSs) that are fixed by polymerization. The magneto-orientation of MDSs originates from the unique structure with γ-Fe2 O3 nanoparticles sandwiched by two silicate nanosheets. The resultant gels not only exhibit anisotropic optical and mechanical properties but also show anisotropic responses to temperature and light. Gels with complex ordered structures of MDSs are further devised by multi-step magnetic orientation and photolithographic polymerization. These gels show varied birefringence patterns with potentials as information materials, and can deform into specific configurations upon stimulations. Multi-gait motions are further realized in the patterned gel through dynamic deformation under spatiotemporal light and friction regulation by imposed magnetic force. The magneto-orientation assisted fabrication of hydrogels with anisotropic structures and additional functions should bring opportunities for gel materials in biomedical devices, soft actuators/robots, etc.

Abstract
![]()
Bioinspired organic/inorganic synthetic composites
have been studied
as high-performance and functional materials. In nature, biominerals
such as pearls, teeth, and bones are self-organized organic/inorganic
composites. The inorganic components are composed of calcium carbonate
(CaCO3) and hydroxyapatite (HAp), while the organic components
consist of peptides and polysaccharides. These composites are used
as structural materials in hard biological tissues. Biominerals do
not show significantly higher performances than synthetic composites
such as glass-fiber- or carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics. However,
biominerals consist of environmentally friendly and biocompatible
components that are prepared under mild conditions. Moreover, they
form elaborate nanostructures and self-organized hierarchical structures.
Much can be learned about material design from these biomineral-based
hierarchical and nanostructured composites to assist in the preparation
of functional materials. Inspired by these biological hard tissues,
we developed nanostructured
thin films and bulk hybrid crystals through the self-organization
of organic polymers and inorganic crystals of CaCO3 or
HAp. In biomineralization, the combination of insoluble components
and soluble acidic macromolecules controls the crystallization process.
We have shown that poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) or acidic peptides called
polymer additives induce the formation of thin film crystals of CaCO3 or HAp by cooperation with insoluble organic templates such
as chitin and synthetic polymers bearing the OH group. Moreover, we
recently developed CaCO3- and HAp-based nanostructured
particles with rod and disk shapes. These were obtained in aqueous
media using a macromolecular acidic additive, PAA, without using insoluble
polymer templates. At appropriate concentrations, the anisotropic
particles self-assembled and formed colloidal liquid-crystalline (LC)
phases. LC materials are generally composed of organic molecules.
They
show ordered and mobile states. The addition of stimuli-responsive
properties to organic rod-like LC molecules led to the successful
development of informational displays, which are now widely used.
On the other hand, colloidal liquid crystals are colloidal self-assembled
dispersions of anisotropic organic and inorganic nano- and micro-objects.
For example, polysaccharide whiskers, clay nanosheets, gibbsite plate-shaped
particles, and silica rod-shaped particles exhibit colloidal LC states. In this Account, we focused on the material design and hierarchical
aspects of biomineral-based colloidal LC polymer/inorganic composites.
We describe the design and preparation, nanostructures, and self-assembled
behavior of these new bioinspired and biocompatible self-organized
materials. The characterization results for these self-assembled nanostructured
colloidal liquid crystals found using high-resolution transmission
electron microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering, and neutron scattering
and rheological measurements are also reported. The functions of these
biomineral-inspired liquid crystals are presented. Because these biomineral-based
LC colloidal liquid crystals can be prepared under mild and aqueous
conditions and they consist of environmentally friendly and biocompatible
components, new functions are expected for these materials.
