Rare-Earth Elements Can Structurally and Energetically Replace the Calcium in a Synthetic Mn4CaO4-Cluster Mimicking the Oxygen-Evolving Center in Photosynthesis

Synthetic Mn3Ce2O5-Cluster Mimicking the Oxygen-Evolving Center in Photosynthesis

The photosynthetic oxygen-evolving center (OEC) is a unique Mn4CaO5-cluster that catalyses water splitting into electrons, protons, and dioxygen. Precisely structural and functional mimicking of the OEC is a long-standing challenge and pressingly needed for understanding the structure-function relationship and catalytic mechanism of O-O bond formation. Herein we report two simple and robust artificial Mn3Ce2O5-complexes that display a remarkable structural similarity to the OEC in regarding of the ten-atom core (five metal ions and five oxygen bridges) and the alkyl carboxylate peripheral ligands. This Mn3Ce2O5-cluster can catalyse the water-splitting reaction on the surface of ITO electrode. These results clearly show that cerium can structurally and functionally replace both calcium and manganese in the cluster. Mass spectroscopic measurements demonstrate that the oxide bridges in the cluster are exchangeable and can be rapidly replaced by the isotopic oxygen of H2 18O in acetonitrile solution, which supports that the oxide bridge(s) may serve as the active site for the formation of O-O bond during the water-splitting reaction. These results would contribute to our understanding of the structure-reactivity relationship of both natural and artificial clusters and shed new light on the development of efficient water-splitting catalysts in artificial photosynthesis.

Insights from Ca2+→Sr2+ substitution on the mechanism of O-O bond formation in photosystem II

In recent years, there has been a steady interest in unraveling the intricate mechanistic details of water oxidation mechanism in photosynthesis. Despite the substantial progress made over several decades, a comprehensive understanding of the precise kinetics underlying O-O bond formation and subsequent evolution remains elusive. However, it is well-established that the oxygen evolving complex (OEC), specifically the CaMn4O5 cluster, plays a crucial role in O-O bond formation, undergoing a series of four oxidative events as it progresses through the S-states of the Kok cycle. To gain further insights into the OEC, researchers have explored the substitution of the Ca2+ cofactor with strontium (Sr), the sole atomic replacement capable of retaining oxygen-evolving activity. Empirical investigations utilizing spectroscopic techniques such as XAS, XRD, EPR, FTIR, and XANES have been conducted to probe the structural consequences of Ca2+→Sr2+ substitution. In parallel, the development of DFT and QM/MM computational models has explored different oxidation and protonation states, as well as variations in ligand coordination at the catalytic center involving amino acid residues. In this review, we critically evaluate and integrate these computational and spectroscopic approaches, focusing on the structural and mechanistic implications of Ca2+→Sr2+ substitution in PS II. We contribute DFT modelling and simulate EXAFS Fourier transforms of Sr-substituted OEC, analyzing promising structures of the S3 state. Through the combination of computational modeling and spectroscopic investigations, valuable insights have been gained, developing a deeper understanding of the photosynthetic process.

Cerium Doping-Induced Enrichment of Ni3S4 Phase for Boosting Oxygen Evolution Reaction

The development of low-cost transition metal compounds with high-performance for efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great significance in promoting the development of electrocatalysis. In this study, a Ce-doped Ni3S4 catalyst (Ce0.2-Ni3S4) was synthesized through a one-step solvothermal method, where the doped rare earth element Ce induced the transformation of NiS to Ni3S4. The Ce0.2-Ni3S4 catalyst exhibited excellent OER performance in 1 M KOH. At a current density of 10 mA cm-2, it showed a low overpotential of 230 mV and a low Tafel slope of 52.39 mV dec-1. Long-term OER tests at the same potential lasted for 24 h without significant loss of current density. This work introduces a novel method of Ce element doping for modifying transition metal sulfides, providing new insights into the effective utilization of rare earth elements in the field of electrochemistry. It creates more chances for the progress of highly efficient catalysts for efficient OER, contributing to the advancement of electrocatalysis.

Metal-Metal Redox Exchange to Produce Heterometallic Manganese-Cobalt Oxo Cubanes via a "Dangler" Intermediate

Pendent metals bound to heterocubanes are components of well-known active sites in enzymes that mediate difficult chemical transformations. Investigations into the specific role of these metal ions, sometimes referred to as "danglers", have been hindered by a paucity of rational synthetic routes to appropriate model structures. To generate pendent metal ions bonded to an oxo cubane through a carboxylate bridge, the cubane Co4(μ3-O)4(OAc)4(t-Bupy)4 (OAc = acetate, t-Bupy = 4-tert-butylpyridine) was exposed to various metal acetate complexes. Reaction with Cu(OAc)2 gave the structurally characterized (by X-ray diffraction) dicopper dangler Cu2Co4(μ4-O)2(μ3-O)2(OAc)6(Cl)2(t-Bupy)4. In contrast, the analogous reaction with Mn(OAc)2 produced the MnIV-containing cubane cation [MnCo3(μ3-O)4(OAc)4(t-Bupy)4]+ by way of a metal-metal exchange that gives Co(OAc)2 and [CoIII(μ-OH)(OAc)]n oligomers as byproducts. Additionally, reaction of the formally CoIV cubane complex [Co4(μ3-O)4(OAc)4(t-Bupy)4][PF6] with Mn(OAc)2 gave the corresponding Mn-containing cubane in 80% yield. A mechanistic examination of the related metal-metal exchange reaction between Co4(μ3-O)4(OBz)4(py)4 (OBz = benzoate) and [Mn(acac)2(py)2][PF6] by ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy provided support for a process involving rate-determining association of the reactants and electron transfer through a μ-oxo bridge in the adduct intermediate. The rates of exchange correlate with the donor strength of the cubane pyridine and benzoate ligand substituents; more electron-donating pyridine ligands accelerate metal-metal exchange, while both electron-donating and -withdrawing benzoate ligands can accelerate exchange. These experiments suggest that the basicity of the cubane oxo ligands promotes metal-metal exchange reactivity. The redox potentials of the Mn and cubane starting materials and isotopic labeling studies suggest an inner-sphere electron-transfer mechanism in a dangler intermediate.

Fresh Impetus in the Chemistry of Calcium Peroxides

Redox-inactive metal ions are essential in modulating the reactivity of various oxygen-containing metal complexes and metalloenzymes, including photosystem II (PSII). The heart of this unique membrane-protein complex comprises the Mn4CaO5 cluster, in which the Ca2+ ion acts as a critical cofactor in the splitting of water in PSII. However, there is still a lack of studies involving Ca-based reactive oxygen species (ROS) systems, and the exact nature of the interaction between the Ca2+ center and ROS in PSII still generates intense debate. Here, harnessing a novel Ca-TEMPO complex supported by the β-diketiminate ligand to control the activation of O2, we report the isolation and structural characterization of hitherto elusive Ca peroxides, a homometallic Ca hydroperoxide and a heterometallic Ca/K peroxide. Our studies indicate that the presence of K+ cations is a key factor controlling the outcome of the oxygenation reaction of the model Ca-TEMPO complex. Combining experimental observations with computational investigations, we also propose a mechanistic rationalization for the reaction outcomes. The designed approach demonstrates metal-TEMPO complexes as a versatile platform for O2 activation and advances the understanding of Ca/ROS systems.

Soluble Gd6Cu24 clusters: effective molecular electrocatalysts for water oxidation

The water oxidation half reaction in water splitting for hydrogen production is extremely rate-limiting. This study reports the synthesis of two heterometallic clusters (Gd6Cu24-IM and Gd6Cu24-AC) for application as efficient water oxidation catalysts. Interestingly, the maximum turnover frequency of Gd6Cu24-IM in an NaAc solution of a weak acid (pH 6) was 319 s-1. The trimetallic catalytic site, H2O-GdIIICuII2-H2O, underwent two consecutive two-electron two-proton coupled transfer processes to form high-valent GdIII-O-O-CuIII2 intermediates. Furthermore, the O-O bond was formed via intramolecular interactions between the CuIII and GdIII centers. The results of this study revealed that synergistic catalytic water oxidation between polymetallic sites can be an effective strategy for regulating O-O bond formation.

The mixed blessings of rare earth element supplements for tomatoes and ferns

Rare earth elements (REEs) constitute a key group of critical minerals that are strategic for the global low-carbon economy and several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Their expected escalating emissions into the environment from emerging anthropogenic sources can negatively affect natural ecosystems. However, their hormetic effects make these elements effective fertilizers to promote crop production. Here, we investigate the response of tomatoes and ferns to REE exposure (La, Gd, Yb). While ferns were unresponsive to REEs, these elements promote evident benefits in tomatoes, e.g., elevating nutrient uptake, higher photosynthetic capacity and phytohormone enhancement to allocate energy to green tissue and root development. Nevertheless, the non-selective cation uptake incurs risks of accumulating non-essential elements in edible tissues. These evident benefits of REEs on crops support applications in agricultural production systems, create added value to the global distribution and promote better material flow management of REEs as strategic and critical resources.

Molecular insights into rare earth element (REE)-mediated phytotoxicity and its impact on human health

Rare earth elements (REEs) that include 15 lanthanides, scandium, and yttrium are a special class of elements due to their remarkable qualities such as magnetism, corrosion resistance, luminescence, and electroconductivity. Over the last few decades, the implication of REEs in agriculture has increased substantially, which was driven by rare earth element (REE)-based fertilizers to increase crop growth and yield. REEs regulate different physiological processes by modulating the cellular Ca2+ level, chlorophyll activities, and photosynthetic rate, promote the protective role of cell membranes, and increase the plant's ability to withstand various stresses and other environmental factors. However, the use of REEs in agriculture is not always beneficial because REEs regulate plant growth and development in dose-dependent manner and excessive usage of them negatively affects plants and agricultural yield. Moreover, increasing applications of REEs together with technological advancement is also a rising concern as they adversely impact all living organisms and disturb different ecosystems. Several animals, plants, microbes, and aquatic and terrestrial organisms are subject to acute and long-term ecotoxicological impacts of various REEs. This concise overview of REEs' phytotoxic effects and implications on human health offers a context for continuing to sew fabric scraps to this incomplete quilt's many layers and colors. This review deals with the applications of REEs in different fields, specifically agriculture, the molecular basis of REE-mediated phytotoxicity, and the consequences for human health.

Coordination Number in High-Spin-Low-Spin Equilibrium in Cluster Models of the S2 State of the Oxygen Evolving Complex

The S2 state of the Oxygen Evolving Complex (OEC) of Photosystem II (PSII) shows high-spin (HS) and low-spin (LS) EPR signals attributed to distinct structures based on computation. Five-coordinate MnIII centers are proposed in these species but are absent in available spectroscopic model complexes. Herein, we report the synthesis, crystal structure, electrochemistry, SQUID magnetometry, and EPR spectroscopy of a MnIIIMnIV3O4 cuboidal complex featuring five-coordinate MnIII. This cluster displays a spin ground state of S = 5/2, while conversion to a six-coordinate Mn upon treatment with water results in a spin state change to S = 1/2. These results demonstrate that coordination number, without dramatic changes within the Mn4O4 core, has a substantial effect on spectroscopy.

Regeneration and Degradation in a Biomimetic Polyoxometalate Water Oxidation Catalyst

Complete understanding of catalytic cycles is required to advance the design of water oxidation catalysts, but it is difficult to attain, due to the complex factors governing their reactivity and stability. In this study, we investigate the regeneration and degradation pathways of the highly active biomimetic water oxidation catalyst [Mn3+ 2Mn4+ 2V4O17(OAc)3]3-, thereby completing its catalytic cycle. Beginning with the deactivated species [Mn3+ 4V4O17(OAc)2]4- left over after O2 evolution, we scrutinize a network of reaction intermediates belonging to two alternative water oxidation cycles. We find that catalyst regeneration to the activated species [Mn4+ 4V4O17(OAc)2(OH)(H2O)]- proceeds via oxidation of each Mn center, with one water ligand being bound during the first oxidation step and a second water ligand being bound and deprotonated during the final oxidation step. ΔΔG values for this last oxidation are consistent with previous experimental results, while regeneration within an alternative catalytic cycle was found to be thermodynamically unfavorable. Extensive in silico sampling of catalyst structures also revealed two degradation processes: cubane opening and ligand dissociation, both of which have low barriers at highly reduced states of the catalyst due to the presence of Jahn-Teller effects. These mechanistic insights are expected to spur the development of more efficient and stable Mn cubane water oxidation catalysts.

Substitution of Ca2+ and changes in the H-bond network near the oxygen-evolving complex of photosystem II

Ca²⁺, which provides binding sites for ligand water molecules W3 and W4 in the Mn₄CaO₅ cluster, is a prerequisite for O₂ evolution in photosystem II (PSII). We report structural changes in the H-bond network and the catalytic cluster itself upon the replacement of Ca²⁺ with other alkaline earth metals, using a quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical approach. The small radius of Mg²⁺ makes W3 donate an H-bond to D1-Glu189 in Mg²⁺-PSII. If an additional water molecule binds at the large surface of Ba²⁺, it donates H-bonds to D1-Glu189 and the ligand water molecule at the dangling Mn, altering the H-bond network. The potential energy profiles of the H-bond between D1-Tyr161 (TyrZ) and D1-His190 and the interconversion between the open- and closed-cubane S₂ conformations remain substantially unaltered upon the replacement of Ca²⁺. Remarkably, the O5⋯Ca²⁺ distance is shortest among all O5⋯metal distances irrespective of the radius being larger than that of Mg²⁺. Furthermore, Ca²⁺ is the only alkaline earth metal that equalizes the O5⋯metal and O2⋯metal distances and facilitates the formation of the symmetric cubane structure.

MnIV4O4 Model of the S3 Intermediate of the Oxygen-Evolving Complex: Effect of the Dianionic Disiloxide Ligand

Synthetic complexes provide useful models to study the interplay between the structure and spectroscopy of the different Sn-state intermediates of the oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) of photosystem II (PSII). Complexes containing the MnIV4 core corresponding to the S3 state, the last observable intermediate prior to dioxygen formation, remain very rare. Toward the development of synthetic strategies to stabilize highly oxidized tetranuclear complexes, ligands with increased anion charge were pursued. Herein, we report the synthesis, electrochemistry, SQUID magnetometry, and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy of a stable MnIV4O4 cuboidal complex supported by a disiloxide ligand. The substitution of an anionic acetate or amidate ligand with a dianionic disiloxide ligand shifts the reduction potential of the MnIIIMnIV3/MnIV4 redox couple by up to ∼760 mV, improving stability. The S = 3 spin ground state of the siloxide-ligated MnIV4O4 complex matches the acetate and amidate variants, in corroboration with the MnIV4 assignment of the S3 state of the OEC.

Hormetic activation of nano-sized rare earth element terbium on growth, PSII photochemistry, antioxidant status and phytohormone regulation in Lemnaminor

Soils contaminated with rare earth elements (REEs) can damage agriculture by causing physiological disorders in plants which are evaluated as the main connection of the human food chain. A biphasic dose response with excitatory responses to low concentrations and inhibitory/harmful responses to high concentrations has been defined as hormesis. However, not much is clear about the ecological effects and potential risks of REEs to plants. For this purpose, here we showed the impacts of different concentrations of nano terbium (Tb) applications (5-10-25-50-100-250-500 mg L^-1) on the accumulation of endogeneous certain ions and hormones, chlorophyll fluoresence, photochemical reaction capacity and antioxidant activity in duckweed (Lemna minor). Tb concentrations less than 100 mg L^-1 increased the contents of nitrogen (N), phosphate (P), potassium (K⁺), calcium (Ca²⁺), magnesium (Mg²⁺), manganese (Mn²⁺) and iron (Fe²⁺). Chlorophyll fluorescence (F_v/F_m and F_v/F_o) was suppressed under 250-500 mg L^-1 Tb. In addition, Tb toxicity affected the trapped energy adversely by the active reaction center of photosystem II (PSII) and led to accumulation of inactive reaction centers, thus lowering the detected level of electron transport from photosystem II (PSII) to photosystem I (PSI). On the other hand, 5-100 mg L^-1 Tb enhanced the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POX), NADPH oxidase (NOX), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), glutathione reductase (GR), monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR), dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR) and glutathione S-transferase (GST). Tb (5-50 mg L^-1) supported the maintenance of cellular redox status by promoting antioxidant pathways involved in the ascorbate-glutathione (AsA-GSH) cycle. In addition to the antioxidant system, the contents of some hormones such as indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), gibberellic acid (GA), cytokinin (CK) and salicylic acid (SA) were also induced in the presence of 5-100 mg L^-1 Tb. In addition, the levels of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and lipid peroxidation (TBARS) were controlled through ascorbate (AsA) regeneration and effective hormonal modulation in L. minor. However, this induction in the antioxidant system and phytohormone contents could not be resumed after applications higher than 250 mg L^-1 Tb. TBARS and H₂O₂, which indicate the level of lipid peroxidation, increased. The results in this study showed that Tb at appropriate concentrations has great potential to confer tolerance of duckweed by supporting the antioxidant system, protecting the biochemical reactions of photosystems and improving hormonal regulation.

Self-Assembled Nanoscale Manganese Oxides Enhance Carbon Capture by Diatoms

Continuous CO₂ emissions from human activities increase atmospheric CO₂ concentrations and affect global climate change. The carbon storage capacity of the ocean is 20-fold higher than that of the land, and diatoms contribute to approximately 40% of carbon capture in the ocean. Manganese (Mn) is a major driver of marine phytoplankton growth and the marine carbon pump. Here, we discovered self-assembled manganese oxides (MnO_x) for CO₂ fixation in a diatom-based biohybrid system. MnO_x shared key features (e.g., di-μ-oxo-bridged Mn-Mn) with the Mn₄CaO₅ cluster of the biological catalyst in photosystem II and promoted photosynthesis and carbon capture by diatoms/MnO_x. The CO₂ capture capacity of diatoms/MnO_x was 1.5-fold higher than that of diatoms alone. Diatoms/MnO_x easily allocated carbon into proteins and lipids instead of carbohydrates. Metabolomics showed that the contents of several metabolites (e.g., lysine and inositol) were positively associated with increased CO₂ capture. Diatoms/MnO_x upregulated six genes encoding photosynthesis core proteins and a key rate-limiting enzyme (Rubisco, ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase) in the Calvin-Benson-Bassham carbon assimilation cycle, revealing the link between MnO_x and photosynthesis. These findings provide a route for offsetting anthropogenic CO₂ emissions and inspiration for self-assembled biohybrid systems for carbon capture by marine phytoplankton.

The Role of Redox-Inactive Metals in Modulating the Redox Potential of the Mn4CaO4 Model Complex

Photosynthetic oxygen-evolving center (OEC), the "engine of life", is a unique Mn₄CaO₅ cluster catalyzing the water oxidation. The role of redox-inactive component Ca²⁺, which can only be functionally replaced by Sr²⁺ in a biological environment, has been under debate for a long time. Recently, its modulating effect on the redox potential of native OEC and artificial structural OEC model complex has received great attention, and linear relationship between the potential and the Lewis acidity of the redox-inactive metal has been proposed for the MMn₃O₄ model complex. In this work, the modulating effect has been studied in detail using the Mn₄CaO₄ model complex, which is the closest structural model to OEC to date and has a similar redox potential at the S₁-S₂ transition. We found the redox-inactive metal only has a weak modulating effect on the potential, which is comparable in strength to that of the ligand environments. Meanwhile, the net charge of the complex, which could be changed along with the redox-inactive metal, has a high impact on the potential and can be unified by protonation, deprotonation, or ligand modification. Although the modulating effect of the redox-inactive metal is not very strong, the linear relationship between the potential and the Lewis acidity is still valid for Mn₄MO₄ complexes. Our results of strong modulating effects for net charge and weak modulating effects for redox-inactive metal fit with the previous experimental observations on Mn₄MO₄ (M = Ca²⁺, Y³⁺, and Gd³⁺) model complexes, and suggest that Ca²⁺ can be structurally and electrochemically replaced with other metal cations, together with proper ligand modifications.

Incorporation of Cation Affects the Redox Reactivity of Fe-NNN Complexes on C-H Oxidation

Cations such as Lewis acids have been shown to enhance the catalytic activity of high-valent Fe-oxygen intermediates. Herein, we present a pyridine diamine ethylene glycol macrocycle, which can form Zn(II)- or Fe(III)-complex with the NNN site, while allowing redox-inactive cations to bind to the ethylene glycol moiety. The addition of alkali, alkali earth, and lanthanum ions resulted in positive shifts to the Fe(III/II) redox potential. Calculation of dissociation constants showed the tightest binding with a Ba²⁺ ion. Density functional theory calculations were used to elucidate the effects of redox inactive cations toward the electronic structures of Fe complexes. Although the Fe-NNN complexes, both in the absence and presence of cations, can catalyze C-H oxidation of 9,10-dihydroanthracene, to give anthracene [hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) product], anthrone, and anthraquinone [oxygen atom transfer (OAT) products], highest overall activity and OAT/HAT product ratios were obtained in the presence of dications, that is, Ba²⁺ and Mg²⁺, respectively.

Mimicking the Oxygen-Evolving Center in Photosynthesis

The oxygen-evolving center (OEC) in photosystem II (PSII) of oxygenic photosynthetic organisms is a unique heterometallic-oxide Mn4CaO5-cluster that catalyzes water splitting into electrons, protons, and molecular oxygen through a five-state cycle (Sn, n = 0 ~ 4). It serves as the blueprint for the developing of the man-made water-splitting catalysts to generate solar fuel in artificial photosynthesis. Understanding the structure-function relationship of this natural catalyst is a great challenge and a long-standing issue, which is severely restricted by the lack of a precise chemical model for this heterometallic-oxide cluster. However, it is a great challenge for chemists to precisely mimic the OEC in a laboratory. Recently, significant advances have been achieved and a series of artificial Mn4XO4-clusters (X = Ca/Y/Gd) have been reported, which closely mimic both the geometric structure and the electronic structure, as well as the redox property of the OEC. These new advances provide a structurally well-defined molecular platform to study the structure-function relationship of the OEC and shed new light on the design of efficient catalysts for the water-splitting reaction in artificial photosynthesis.

Promoting Proton Transfer and Stabilizing Intermediates in Catalytic Water Oxidation via Hydrophobic Outer Sphere Interactions

The outer coordination sphere of metalloenzyme often plays an important role in its high catalytic activity, however, this principle is rarely considered in the design of man-made molecular catalysts. Herein, four Ru-bda (bda=2,2'-bipyridine-6,6'-dicarboxylate) based molecular water oxidation catalysts with well-defined outer spheres are designed and synthesized. Experimental and theoretical studies showed that the hydrophobic environment around the Ru center could lead to thermodynamic stabilization of the high-valent intermediates and kinetic acceleration of the proton transfer process during catalytic water oxidation. By this outer sphere stabilization, a 6-fold rate increase for water oxidation catalysis has been achieved.

Synthesizing Mechanism of the Mn4 Ca Cluster Mimicking the Oxygen-Evolving Center in Photosynthesis

The photosynthetic oxygen-evolving center (OEC) is a unique Mn₄ CaO₅ cluster that serves as a blueprint to develop superior water-splitting catalysts for the generation of solar fuels in artificial photosynthesis. It is a great challenge and long-standing issue to reveal the synthesizing mechanism of this Mn₄ CaO₅ cluster in both natural and artificial photosynthesis. Herein, efforts were made to reveal the synthesizing mechanism of an artificial Mn₄ CaO₄ cluster, a close mimic of the OEC. Four key intermediates were successfully isolated and structurally characterized for the first time. It was demonstrated that the Mn₄ CaO₄ cluster could be formed through a reaction between a thermodynamically stable Mn₃ CaO₄ cluster and an unusual four-coordinated Mn^III ion, followed by stabilization process through binding an organic base (e.g., pyridine) on the "dangling" Mn ion. These findings shed new light on the synthesizing mechanism of the OEC and rational design of new artificial water-splitting catalysts.
