Thiol-Mediated α-Amino Radical Formation via Visible-Light-Activated Ion-Pair Charge-Transfer Complexes

Inexpensive and bench stable diarylmethylium tetrafluoroborates as organocatalysts in the light mediated hydrosulfonylation of unactivated alkenes

In this paper, we present the synthetic potential of diarylmethylium tetrafluoroborates as catalysts for the visible light promoted hydrosulfonylation of unactivated alkenes. For the first time, these salts, which are bench stable and easily preparable on a multi-gram scale, were employed as organocatalysts. Interestingly, a catalyst loading of only 1 mol% allowed sulfone products to be efficiently obtained from good-to-excellent yields with high functional-group tolerance and scalability up to 15 mmol of alkene. The mechanistic study, both experimental and computational, presented here, revealed an alternative mechanism for the formation of the key sulfonyl radical. Indeed, the photoactive species was proved not to be the diarylcarbenium salt itself, but two intermediates, a stable S-C adduct and an ion couple, that were formed after its interaction with sodium benzenesulfinate. Upon absorbing light, the ion couple could reach an excited state with a charge-transfer character which gave the fundamental sulfonyl radical. A PCET (proton-coupled electron transfer) closes the catalytic cycle reforming the diarylcarbenium salt.

Taming Chiral Quaternary Stereocenters via Remote H-Bonding Stereoinduction in Palladium-Catalyzed (3+2) Cycloadditions

Ring-opening transformations of donor-acceptor (D-A) cyclopropanes enable the rapid assembly of complex molecules. However, the enantioselective formation of chiral quaternary stereocenters using substrates bearing two different acceptors remains a challenge. Herein, we describe the first palladium-catalyzed highly diastereo- and enantioselective (3+2) cycloaddition of vinyl cyclopropanes bearing two different electron-withdrawing groups, a subset of D-A cyclopropanes. The key to the success of this reaction is the remote stereoinduction through hydrogen bond from chiral ligands, which thereby addressed the aforementioned challenge. A variety of chiral five-membered heterocycles were produced in good yields and with high stereoselectivity (up to 99 % yields, 99 : 1 er and >19 : 1 dr). In-depth mechanistic investigations, including control experiments and theoretical calculations, revealed the origin of the stereoselectivity and the importance of H-bonding in stereocontrol.

Diboron(4)-Catalyzed Remote [3+2] Cycloaddition of Cyclopropanes via Dearomative/Rearomative Radical Transmission through Pyridine

Ring structures such as pyridine, cyclopentane or their combinations are important motifs in bioactive molecules. In contrast to previous cycloaddition reactions that necessitated a directly bonded initiating functional group, this work demonstrated a novel through-(hetero)arene radical transmission concept for selective activation of a remote bond. An efficient, metal-free and atom-economical [3+2] cycloaddition between 4-pyridinyl cyclopropanes and alkenes or alkynes has been developed for modular synthesis of pyridine-substituted cyclopentanes, cyclopentenes and bicyclo[2.1.1]hexanes that are difficult to access using known methods. This complexity-building reaction was catalyzed by a very simple and inexpensive diboron(4) compound and took place via dearomative/rearomative processes. The substrate scope was broad and more than 100 new compounds were prepared in generally high yields. Mechanistic experiments and density function theory (DFT) investigation supported a radical relay catalytic cycle involving alkylidene dihydropyridine radical intermediates and boronyl radical transfer.

Photoinduced Metal-Free Borylation of Aryl Halides Catalysed by in situ Formed Donor-Acceptor Complex

Organoboron compounds are very important building blocks which can be applied in medicinal, biological and industrial fields. However, direct borylation in a metal free manner has been very rarely reported. Herein, we described the successful direct borylation of haloarenes under mild, operationally simple, catalyst-free conditions, promoted by irradiation with visible light. Mechanistic experiments and computational investigations indicate the formation of an excited donor–acceptor complex with a −3.12 V reduction potential, which is a highly active reductant and can facilitate single-electron-transfer (SET) with aryl halides to produce aryl radical intermediates. A two-step one-pot method was developed for site selective aromatic C–H bond borylation. The protocol's good functional group tolerance enables the functionalization of a variety of biologically relevant compounds, representing a new application of aryl radicals merged with photochemistry.

We reported a facile metal-free conversion of aryl halides to the corresponding boronic esters catalysed by an in situ formed donor–acceptor complex. A two-step one-pot method was also developed for site selective aromatic C–H bond borylation.
