Abstract
Acridine frameworks stand as pivotal architectural elements in pharmaceuticals and photocatalytic applications, owing to their chemical adaptability, biological activity, and unique excited-state dynamics. Conventional synthetic routes often entail specialized starting materials, anaerobic or moisture-free conditions, and elaborate multi-stage manipulations for incorporating diverse functionalities. Herein, we present a convergent approach integrating photo-excitation of readily available ortho-alkyl nitroarenes with copper-promoted cascade annulation. This innovative system enables an aerobic, one-pot reaction of o-alkyl nitroarenes with arylboronic acids, thereby streamlining the modular construction of a wide array of acridine derivatives with various functional groups. This encompasses symmetrical, unsymmetrical and polysubstituted varieties, some of which are otherwise exceptionally difficult to synthesize. Furthermore, it significantly improves the production of structurally varied acridinium salts, featuring enhanced photophysical properties, high excited state potentials (E*red=2.08-3.15 V), and exhibiting superior performance in intricate photoredox transformations.

Abstract
The photophysical properties of two acridinium derivatives, 9-phenyl-10-methylacridinium (Ph-Arc+) and 9-mesityl-10-methyl acridinium (Mes-Acr+) were investigated in aqueous solutions of poly(methacrylic acids) (PMAA) at various pH values with various polymer to dye (R/D) ratios. In acidic conditions, PMAA effectively turned on the emission of both acridinium derivatives. Micromolar concentrations of copper (II) ions can selectively turn off the emission of dye/PMAA mixtures with a linear response range from 0.50 to 10.0 µM and a detection limit as low as 0.38 µM. In near neutral conditions, Mes-Acr+ in PMAA solutions displayed extremely weak emission. However, trace amounts of Hg2+ ions can instantly turn on the emission with a low detection limit of 43.6 nM and a linear range between 1.0 to 10.0 µM. This analytical method is fast, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly, as it is conducted in 100 % aqueous solution with commercial acridinium derivatives and a biocompatible polymer.

Abstract
A π-Lewis acidic metal-catalysed cyclisation/photochemical radical addition sequence was developed, which utilises in situ generated 2-benzopyrylium cation intermediates as photoredox catalysts and electrophilic substrates to form 1H-isochromene derivatives in good yields in most cases. The key 2-benzopyrylium intermediates were generated through the activation of the alkyne moiety of ortho-carbonyl alkynylbenzene derivatives by such π-Lewis acidic metal catalysts as AgNTf2 and Cu(NTf2)2, and the subsequent intramolecular cyclisation and proto-demetalation using trifluoroacetic acid. Further photo-excitation of the 2-benzopyrylium intermediates facilitated single-electron transfer from a benzyltrimethylsilane derivative as a donor molecule to promote the radical addition of arylmethyl radicals to the 2-benzopyrylium intermediates.

Abstract
A new design concept for organic, strongly oxidizing photocatalysts is described based upon dicationic acridinium/carbene hybrids. A highly modular synthesis of such hybrids is presented, and the dications are utilized as novel, tailor-made photoredox catalysts in the direct oxidative C-N coupling. Under optimized conditions, benzene and even electron-deficient arenes can be oxidized and coupled with a range of N-heterocycles in high to excellent yields with a single low-energy photon per catalytic turnover, while commonly used acridinium photocatalysts are not able to perform the challenging oxidation step. In contrast to traditional photocatalysts, the hybrid photocatalysts reported here feature a reversible two-electron redox system with regular or inverted redox potentials for the two-electron transfer. The different oxidation states could be isolated and structurally characterized supported by NMR, EPR, and X-ray analysis. Mechanistic experiments employing time-resolved emission and transient absorption spectroscopy unambiguously reveal the outstanding excited-state potential of our best-performing catalyst (+2.5 V vs SCE), and they provide evidence for mechanistic key steps and intermediates.

Abstract
Herein, we disclose a novel reorganization/cycloaddition between two imine units catalyzed by In(OTf)3 Lewis acid that differs from the well-known [4 + 2] cycloaddition version via the Povarov reaction. By means of this unprecedented imine chemistry, a collection of synthetically useful dihydroacridines has been synthesized. Notably, the obtained products give rise to a series of structurally novel and fine-tuneable acridinium photocatalysts, offering a heuristic paradigm for synthesis and efficiently facilitating several encouraging dihydrogen coupling reactions.

Abstract
Heterogeneously catalyzed depolymerization of lignin to value-added chemicals is increasingly attractive but highly challengeable. Particularly, the diffusion limitation of lignin macromolecule to the solid catalyst surface is a big barrier, which significantly decreases the yield of monomer while increasing char formation. Therefore, for the potential industrial utilization of lignin, new knowledge focused on the size of lignin particles is of great importance to offer guidance for promoting lignin depolymerization and suppressing condensation in the heterogeneously catalytic systems. In this Review, the size of lignin particles and macromolecules are summarized. Previous approaches for improving the mass diffusion including enhancing the solubility of lignin and exploitation of hierarchical and "solubilized" materials are also discussed. Based on these, a constructive perspective is proposed. Thus, this work provides a new insight on the rational design of heterogeneous catalytic techniques for efficient utilization of the aromatic polymer of lignin.

Abstract
Triarylamine-substituted benzimidazoliums (BI+-PhNAr2), new electron donor-acceptor dyad molecules, were synthesized. Their photocatalytic properties for reductive organic transformations were explored using absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, redox potential determinations, density functional theory calculations, transient absorption spectroscopy, and reduction reactions of selected substrates. The results show that irradiation of BI+-PhNAr2 promotes photoinduced intramolecular electron transfer to form a long-lived (∼300 μs) charge shifted state (BI•-PhN•+Ar2). In the pathway for photocatalysis of reduction reactions of substrates, BI•-PhN•+Ar2 is subsequently transformed to the neutral benzimidazolyl radical (BI•-PhNAr2) by single-electron transfer from the donor 1,3-dimethyl-2-phenylbenzimidazoline (BIH-Ph) serving as a cooperative agent. Among the benzimidazoliums explored, the bromo-substituted analogue BI+-PhN(C6H4Br-p)2 in conjunction with BIH-Ph demonstrates the most consistent catalytic performance.

Abstract
In canonical organic chemistry textbooks, the widely adopted mechanism for the classic transetherifications between ethers and alcohols starts with the activation of the ether in order to weaken the C-O bond, followed by the nucleophilic attack by the alcohol hydroxy group, resulting in a net C-O/O-H σ-bond metathesis. In this manuscript, our experimental and computational investigation of a Re2O7 mediated ring-closing transetherification challenges the fundamental tenets of the traditional transetherification mechanism. Instead of ether activation, the alternative activation of the hydroxy group followed by nucleophilic attack of ether is realized by commercially available Re2O7 through the formation of perrhenate ester intermediate in hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP), which results in an unusual C-O/C-O σ-bond metathesis. Due to the preference for the activation of alcohol rather than ether, this intramolecular transetherification reaction is therefore suitable for substrates bearing multiple ether moieties, unparalleled by any previous methods.
