Visible Light Generation of a Microsecond Long-Lived Potent Reducing Agent

Heterogeneous organophotocatalytic HBr oxidation coupled with oxygen reduction for boosting bromination of arenes

Developing mild photocatalytic bromination strategies using sustainable bromo source has been attracting intense interests, but there is still much room for improvement. Full utilization of redox centers of photocatalysts for efficient generation of Br+ species is the key. Herein we report heterogenous organophotocatalytic HBr oxidation coupled with oxygen reduction to furnish Br2 and H2O2 for effective bromination of arenes over Al2O3 supported perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA). Mechanism studies suggest that O-vacancy in Al2O3 can provide Lewis-acid-type anchoring sites for O2, enabling unexpected dual-electron transfer from anchored photoexcited PTCDA to chemically bound O2 to produce H2O2. The in-situ generated H2O2 and Br2 over redox centers work together to generate HBrO for bromination of arenes. This work provides new insights that heterogenization of organophotocatalysts can not only help to improve their stability and recyclability, but also endow them with the ability to trigger unusual reaction mode via cooperative catalysis with supports.

Ultrastable Anion Radicals in Ligand-Dimerized Frameworks for Self-Accumulated Electrochemiluminescence

Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) is a light-emitting process that occurs via an annihilation reaction among energetic radical intermediates, whose stabilities determine the ECL efficiency. In this study, a ligand-dimerized metal-organic framework (MOF) with ultrastable anion radical is designed as an efficient nanoemitter for self-accumulated ECL. Due to the nonplanar structure of perylene diimide (PDI) derivate, two PDI ligands in the framework form a J-dimer unit with a vertical distance of ∼5.74 Å. In cathodic scanning, the ligand-dimerized MOF demonstrates three-step ECL emissions with a gradual increase in ECL intensity. Unlike the decrease in the PDI ligand, the self-accumulated ECL of the MOF was observed with 16.8-fold enhancement due to the excellent stability of radical intermediates in frameworks. Electron paramagnetic resonance demonstrated the ultrastability of free radicals in the designed frameworks, with 82.2% remaining even after one month of storage. Density functional theory calculations supported that PDI dimerization was energetically favorable upon successive electron injection. Moreover, the ECL wavelength is 610 nm, corresponding to the emission of excited dimers. The radical-stabilized reticular nanoemitters open up a new platform for decoding the fundamentals of self-accumulated ECL systems.

Iron(III) Carbene Complexes with Tunable Excited State Energies for Photoredox and Upconversion

Substituting precious elements in luminophores and photocatalysts by abundant first-row transition metals remains a significant challenge, and iron continues to be particularly attractive owing to its high natural abundance and low cost. Most iron complexes known to date face severe limitations due to undesirably efficient deactivation of luminescent and photoredox-active excited states. Two new iron(III) complexes with structurally simple chelate ligands enable straightforward tuning of ground and excited state properties, contrasting recent examples, in which chemical modification had a minor impact. Crude samples feature two luminescence bands strongly reminiscent of a recent iron(III) complex, in which this observation was attributed to dual luminescence, but in our case, there is clear-cut evidence that the higher-energy luminescence stems from an impurity and only the red photoluminescence from a doublet ligand-to-metal charge transfer (2LMCT) excited state is genuine. Photoinduced oxidative and reductive electron transfer reactions with methyl viologen and 10-methylphenothiazine occur with nearly diffusion-limited kinetics. Photocatalytic reactions not previously reported for this compound class, in particular the C-H arylation of diazonium salts and the aerobic hydroxylation of boronic acids, were achieved with low-energy red light excitation. Doublet-triplet energy transfer (DTET) from the luminescent 2LMCT state to an anthracene annihilator permits the proof of principle for triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion based on a molecular iron photosensitizer. These findings are relevant for the development of iron complexes featuring photophysical and photochemical properties competitive with noble-metal-based compounds.

Nature-Inspired Photocatalytic Azo Bond Cleavage with Red Light

The emerging field of photoredox catalysis in mammalian cells enables spatiotemporal regulation of a wealth of biological processes. However, the selective cleavage of stable covalent bonds driven by low-energy visible light remains a great challenge. Herein, we report that red light excitation of a commercially available dye, abbreviated NMB+, leads to catalytic cleavage of stable azo bonds in both aqueous solutions and hypoxic cells and hence a means to photodeliver drugs or functional molecules. Detailed mechanistic studies reveal that azo bond cleavage is triggered by a previously unknown consecutive two-photon process. The first photon generates a triplet excited state, 3NMB+*, that is reductively quenched by an electron donor to generate a protonated NMBH•+. The NMBH•+ undergoes a disproportionation reaction that yields the initial NMB+ and two-electron-reduced NMBH (i.e., leuco-NMB, abbreviated as LNMB). Interestingly, LNMB forms a charge transfer complex with all four azo substrates that possess an intense absorption band in the red region. A second red photon induces electron transfer from LNMB to the azo substrate, resulting in azo bond cleavage. The charge transfer complex mediated two-photon catalytic mechanism reported herein is reminiscent of the flavin-dependent natural photoenzyme that catalyzes bond cleavage reactions with high-energy photons. The red-light-driven photocatalytic strategy offers a new approach to bioorthogonal azo bond cleavage for photodelivery of drugs or functional molecules.

Chalcogen-bridged coordination polymer for the photocatalytic activation of aryl halides

The ability to deliver electrons is vital for dye-based photocatalysts. Conventionally, the aromatic stacking-based charge-transfer complex increases photogenerated electron accessibility but decreases the energy of excited-state dyes. To circumvent this dilemma, here we show a strategy by tuning the stacking mode of dyes. By decorating naphthalene diimide with S-bearing branches, the S···S contact-linked naphthalene diimide string is created in coordination polymer, thereby enhancing electron mobility while simultaneously preserving competent excited-state reducing power. This benefit, along with in situ assembly between naphthalene diimide strings and exogenous reagent/reactant, improves the accessibility of short-lived excited states during consecutive photon excitation, resulting in greater efficiency in photoinduced electron-transfer activation of inert bonds in comparison to other coordination polymers with different dye-stacking modes. This heterogeneous approach is successfully applied in the photoreduction of inert aryl halides and the successive formation of C_Ar-C/S/P/B bonds with potential pharmaceutical applications.

A Concerted Redox- and Light-Activated Agent for Controlled Multimodal Therapy against Hypoxic Cancer Cells

Hypoxia represents a remarkably exploitable target for cancer therapy, is encountered only in solid human tumors, and is highly associated with cancer resistance and recurrence. Here, a hypoxia-activated mitochondria-accumulated Ru(II) polypyridyl prodrug functionalized with conjugated azo (Az) and nitrogen mustard (NM) functionalities, RuAzNM, is reported. This prodrug has multimodal theranostic properties toward hypoxic cancer cells. Reduction of the azo group in hypoxic cell microenvironments gives rise to the generation of two primary amine products, a free aniline mustard, and the polypyridyl RuNH₂ complex. Thus, the aniline mustard triggers generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and mtDNA crosslinking. Meanwhile, the resultant biologically benign phosphorescent RuNH₂ gives rise to a diagnostic signal and signals activation of the phototherapy. This multimodal therapeutic effect eventually elevates ROS levels, depletes reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) and adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and induces mitochondrial membrane damage, mtDNA damage, and ultimately cell apoptosis. This unique strategy allows controlled multimodal theranostics to be realized in hypoxic cells and multicellular spheroids, making RuAzNM a highly selective and effective cancer-cell-selective theranostic agent (IC₅₀  = 2.3 µm for hypoxic HepG2 cancer cells vs 58.2 µm for normoxic THL-3 normal cells). This is the first report of a metal-based compound developed as a multimodal theranostic agent for hypoxia.

Photocatalytic Regeneration of a Nicotinamide Adenine Nucleotide Mimic with Water-Soluble Iridium(III) Complexes

Nicotinamide adenine nucleotide (NADH) is involved in many biologically relevant redox reactions, and the photochemical regeneration of its oxidized form (NAD⁺) under physiological conditions is of interest for combined photo- and biocatalysis. Here, we demonstrate that tri-anionic, water-soluble variants of typically very lipophilic iridium(III) complexes can photo-catalyze the reduction of an NAD⁺ mimic in a comparatively efficient manner. In combination with a well-known rhodium co-catalyst to facilitate regioselective reactions, these iridium(III) photo-reductants outcompete the commonly used [Ru(bpy)₃]²⁺ (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) photosensitizer in water by up to 1 order of magnitude in turnover frequency. This improved reactivity is attributable to the strong excited-state electron donor properties and the good chemical robustness of the tri-anionic iridium(III) sensitizers, combined with their favorable Coulombic interaction with the di-cationic rhodium co-catalyst. Our findings seem relevant in the greater context of photobiocatalysis, for which access to strong, efficient, and robust photoreductants with good water solubility can be essential.

Accumulation of Four Electrons on a Terphenyl (Bis)disulfide

The activation of N₂ , CO₂ or H₂ O to energy-rich products relies on multi-electron transfer reactions, and consequently it seems desirable to understand the basics of light-driven accumulation of multiple redox equivalents. Most of the previously reported molecular acceptors merely allow the storage of up to two electrons. We report on a terphenyl compound including two disulfide bridges, which undergoes four-electron reduction in two separate electrochemical steps, aided by a combination of potential compression and inversion. Under visible-light irradiation using the organic super-electron donor tetrakis(dimethylamino)ethylene, a cascade of light-induced reaction steps is observed, leading to the cleavage of both disulfide bonds. Whereas one of them undergoes extrusion of sulfur to result in a thiophene, the other disulfide is converted to a dithiolate. These insights seem relevant to enhance the current fundamental understanding of photochemical energy storage.

New Corrosion Inhibitors Based on Perylene Units in Epoxy Ester Resin Coatings

Four new compounds from perylene dianhydride were prepared and tested for their anti-corrosion properties. Dizinc salt of perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid and dimagnesium salts of perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid, 5,5′-(1,3,8,10-tetraoxo-1,3,8,10-tetrahydroanthra[2,1,9-def:6,5,10-d′e′f′] diisoquinoline-2,9-diyl) bis(2-hydroxybenzoic acid) and N,N′-bis[3,3′-(dimethylamino)propylamine]-3,4,9,10-perylenediimide were characterized by analytical methods (SEM, EDX, X-ray) and parameters used in the field of paints (density, oil number and critical volume concentrations of pigment). The pigments (in a pigment volume concentration series) were used to prepare paints also containing a perylene C26H14N2O4 (Compound I) derivative pigment plus inert titanium dioxide to maintain a constant concentration of solids in the paint film. A mixture containing zinc nitroisophthalate and both the perylene derivative and titanium dioxide served as the reference material. The paints were applied to steel panels in two layers with a ruler. The organic coatings were subjected to electrochemical measurements and accelerated cyclic corrosion tests. The highest corrosion resistance was found for the coating containing C24H8O8Mg2. Superior to the coating containing either C26H14N2O4 or the conventional corrosion inhibitor C8H5N06-Zn, this pigment type acted mainly by a mechanism based on the compound’s complexation capacity at the metallic surface/organic coating/corrosion medium interface. The organic coatings containing perylene acid salts also attained high mechanical resistance.
