Unraveling the Active Vanadium Sites and Adsorbate Dynamics in VOx/CeO2 Oxidation Catalysts Using Transient IR Spectroscopy

Refining the mechanism of CO2 and H2 activation over gold-ceria catalysts by IR modulation excitation spectroscopy

The activation and utilization of the greenhouse gas CO2 is of great interest for the energy transition as a fossil-free carbon source for mitigating climate change. CO2 hydrogenation via the reverse water-gas shift reaction (RWGSR) converts CO2 to CO, a crucial component of syngas, enabling further transformation by means of the Fischer-Tropsch process. In this study, we unravel the detailed mechanism of the RWGSR on low-loaded Au/CeO2 catalysts using IR modulation excitation spectroscopy (MES), by periodically modulating the concentration of the reactants, followed by phase-sensitive detection (PSD). Applying such a MES-PSD approach to Au/CeO2 catalysts during RWGSR gives direct spectroscopic evidence for the active role of gold hydride, bidentate carbonate and hydroxyl species in the reaction mechanism, while disproving the participation of other species such as formate. Our results highlight the potential of modulation excitation spectroscopy combined with phase-sensitive detection to provide new mechanistic insight into catalytic reactions not accessible by steady-state techniques, including a profound understanding of the sequence of reaction steps.

Unraveling surface and bulk dynamics of iron(III) molybdate during oxidative dehydrogenation using operando and transient spectroscopies

Iron(III) molybdate (Fe2(MoO4)3) is a commercial catalyst for the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of methanol, but it has recently been shown to be relevant for other substrates as well. Despite its commercial use, a detailed mechanistic understanding of Fe2(MoO4)3 catalysts at the surface and in the bulk has been lacking, largely hampered by the lack of suitable spectroscopic methods, directly applicable under reaction conditions. Using propane ODH as an example, we highlight the potential of operando Raman and impedance spectroscopy combined with transient IR spectroscopy, to identify surface active sites and monitor the hydrogen transfer and oxygen dynamics. By comparison with the behavior of reference compounds (MoO3, MoOx/Fe2O3) a mechanistic model is proposed. The presence of iron greatly influences the reactivity behavior via oxygen diffusion but is moderated in its oxidative capacity by surface MoOx. Our approach directly elucidates fundamental properties of Fe2(MoO4)3 of general importance to selective oxidation catalysis.

Iterative multiscale and multi-physics computations for operando catalyst nanostructure elucidation and kinetic modeling

Modern heterogeneous catalysis has benefitted immensely from computational predictions of catalyst structure and its evolution under reaction conditions, first-principles mechanistic investigations, and detailed kinetic modeling, which are rungs on a multiscale workflow. Establishing connections across these rungs and integration with experiments have been challenging. Here, operando catalyst structure prediction techniques using density functional theory simulations and ab initio thermodynamics calculations, molecular dynamics, and machine learning techniques are presented. Surface structure characterization by computational spectroscopic and machine learning techniques is then discussed. Hierarchical approaches in kinetic parameter estimation involving semi-empirical, data-driven, and first-principles calculations and detailed kinetic modeling via mean-field microkinetic modeling and kinetic Monte Carlo simulations are discussed along with methods and the need for uncertainty quantification. With these as the background, this article proposes a bottom-up hierarchical and closed loop modeling framework incorporating consistency checks and iterative refinements at each level and across levels.

Fine control for the preparation of ceria nanorods (111)

The morphologies and exposed surfaces of ceria nanocrystals are important factors in determining their performance. In order to establish a structure-property relationship for ceria nanomaterials, it is essential to have materials with well-defined morphologies and specific exposed facets. This is also crucial for acquiring high resolution ¹⁷O solid-state NMR spectra. In this study, we explore the synthesis conditions for preparing CeO₂ nanorods with exposed (111) facets. The effects of alkali concentration, hydrothermal temperature and time, cerium source and oxidation agent are investigated and optimal synthesis conditions are found. The resulting CeO₂ nanorods show very narrow ¹⁷O NMR peaks for the oxygen ions in the first, second and third layers, providing a foundation for future research on mechanisms involving ceria materials using ¹⁷O solid-state NMR spectroscopy.

Concerted oxygen diffusion across heterogeneous oxide interfaces for intensified propane dehydrogenation

Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) is an industrial technology for direct propylene production which has received extensive attention in recent years. Nevertheless, existing non-oxidative dehydrogenation technologies still suffer from the thermodynamic equilibrium limitations and severe coking. Here, we develop the intensified propane dehydrogenation to propylene by the chemical looping engineering on nanoscale core-shell redox catalysts. The core-shell redox catalyst combines dehydrogenation catalyst and solid oxygen carrier at one particle, preferably compose of two to three atomic layer-type vanadia coating ceria nanodomains. The highest 93.5% propylene selectivity is obtained, sustaining 43.6% propylene yield under 300 long-term dehydrogenation-oxidation cycles, which outperforms an analog of industrially relevant K-CrO_x/Al₂O₃ catalysts and exhibits 45% energy savings in the scale-up of chemical looping scheme. Combining in situ spectroscopies, kinetics, and theoretical calculation, an intrinsically dynamic lattice oxygen "donator-acceptor" process is proposed that O^2- generated from the ceria oxygen carrier is boosted to diffuse and transfer to vanadia dehydrogenation sites via a concerted hopping pathway at the interface, stabilizing surface vanadia with moderate oxygen coverage at pseudo steady state for selective dehydrogenation without significant overoxidation or cracking.

Unraveling Radical and Oxygenate Routes in the Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Propane over Boron Nitride

Oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODHP) is an emerging technology to meet the global propylene demand with boron nitride (BN) catalysts likely to play a pivotal role. It is widely accepted that gas-phase chemistry plays a fundamental role in the BN-catalyzed ODHP. However, the mechanism remains elusive because short-lived intermediates are difficult to capture. We detect short-lived free radicals (CH₃^•, C₃H₅^•) and reactive oxygenates, C_2-4 ketenes and C_2-3 enols, in ODHP over BN by operando synchrotron photoelectron photoion coincidence spectroscopy. In addition to a surface-catalyzed channel, we identify a gas-phase H-acceptor radical- and H-donor oxygenate-driven route, leading to olefin production. In this route, partially oxidized enols propagate into the gas phase, followed by dehydrogenation (and methylation) to form ketenes and finally yield olefins by decarbonylation. Quantum chemical calculations predict the >BO dangling site to be the source of free radicals in the process. More importantly, the easy desorption of oxygenates from the catalyst surface is key to prevent deep oxidation to CO₂.
