Annihilating Actinic Photochemistry of the Pyruvate Anion by One and Two Water Molecules

Cryogenic Photoelectron Spectroscopic and Theoretical Study of the Electronic and Geometric Structures of Undercoordinated Osmium Chloride Anions OsCln- (n = 3-5)

A series of anionic transition metal halides, OsCln- (n = 3-5), have been investigated using a newly developed, home-constructed, cryogenic anion cluster photoelectron spectroscopy. The target anionic species are generated through collision-induced dissociation in a two-stage ion funnel. The measured vertical detachment energies (VDEs) are 3.48, 4.54, and 4.81 eV for n = 3, 4, and 5, respectively. Density functional theory calculations at the B3LYP-D3(BJ)//aug-cc-pVTZ(-pp) level predict the lowest energy structures of the atomic form of OsCln- (n = 3-5) to be a quintet triangle, quartet square, and quintet square-based pyramid, respectively. The CCSD(T)-calculated VDEs and corresponding adiabatic detachment energies agree well with our experimental measurements. Analysis of the corresponding frontier molecular orbitals and charge density differences suggests that the d-orbitals of the transition metal Os play a primary role in the single-photon detachment processes, and the detached electrons originating from different molecular orbitals are distinguishable.

Aqueous pyruvate partly dissociates under deep ultraviolet irradiation but is resilient to near ultraviolet excitation

The deep ultraviolet photochemistry of aqueous pyruvate is believed to have been essential to the origin of life, and near ultraviolet excitation of pyruvate in aqueous aerosols is assumed to contribute significantly to the photochemistry of the Earth's atmosphere. However, the primary photochemistry of aqueous pyruvate is unknown. Here we study the susceptibility of aqueous pyruvate to photodissociation by deep ultraviolet and near ultraviolet irradiation with femtosecond spectroscopy supported by density functional theory calculations. The primary photo-dynamics of the aqueous pyruvate show that upon deep-UV excitation at 200 nm, about one in five excited pyruvate anions have dissociated by decarboxylation 100 ps after the excitation, while the rest of the pyruvate anions return to the ground state. Upon near-UV photoexcitation at a wavelength of 340 nm, the dissociation yield of aqueous pyruvate 200 ps after the excitation is insignificant and no products are observed. The experimental results are explained by our calculations, which show that aqueous pyruvate anions excited at 200 nm have sufficient excess energy for decarboxylation, whereas excitation at 340 nm provides the aqueous pyruvate anions with insufficient energy to overcome the decarboxylation barrier.

Carbon dioxide activation by discandium dioxide cations in the gas phase: a combined investigation of infrared photodissociation spectroscopy and DFT calculations

We present a combined computational and experimental study of CO2 activation at the Sc2O2+ metal oxide ion center in the gas phase. Density functional theory calculations on the structures of [Sc2O2(CO2)n]+ (n = 1-4) ion-molecule complexes reveal a typical end-on binding motif as well as bidentate and tridentate carbonate-containing configurations. As the number of attached CO2 molecules increases, activated forms tend to dominate the isomeric populations. Distortion energies are unveiled to account for the conversion barriers from molecularly bound isomers to carbonate structures, and show a monotonically decreasing trend with successive CO2 ligand addition. The infrared photodissociation spectra of target ion-molecule complexes were recorded in the 2100-2500 cm-1 frequency region and interpreted by comparison with simulated IR spectra of low-lying isomers representing distinct configurations, demonstrating a high possibility of carbonate structure formation in current experiments.

Spectroscopy of cluster aerosol models: IR and UV spectra of hydrated glyoxylate with and without sea salt

Glyoxylic acid is formed in the troposphere by oxidation of organic molecules. In sea salt aerosols, it is expected to be present as glyoxylate, integrated into the salt environment and strongly interacting with water molecules. In water, glyoxylate is in equilibrium with its gem-diol form. To understand the influence of water and salt on the photophysics and photochemistry of glyoxylate, we generate small model clusters containing glyoxylate by electrospray ionization and study them by Fourier-Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometry. We used infrared multiple photon dissociation spectroscopy and UV/vis photodissociation spectroscopy for structural characterization as well as quantum chemical calculations to model the spectra and dissociation patterns. Resonant absorption of infrared radiation leads to water evaporation, which indicates that water and glyoxylate are separate molecular entities in a significant fraction of the clusters, in line with the observed absorption of UV light in the actinic region. Hydration of glyoxylate leads to a change of the dihedral angle in the CHOCOO-·H2O complex, causing a slight redshift of the S1 ← S0 transition. However, the barriers for internal rotation are below 5 kJ mol-1, which explains the broad S1 ← S0 absorption extending from about 320 to 380 nm. Most importantly, hydration hinders dissociation in the S1 state, thus enhancing the quantum yield of fluorescence combined with water evaporation. No C-C bond photolysis is observed, but due to the limited signal-to-noise ratio, it cannot be ruled out. The quantum yield, however, will be relatively low. Fluorescence dominates the photophysics of glyoxylate embedded in the dry salt cluster, but the quantum yield shifts towards internal conversion upon addition of one or two water molecules.

In silico Investigation of the Thermochemistry and Photoactivity of Pyruvic Acid in an Aqueous Solution of NaCl

The photochemistry of oxocarboxylic acids contributes significantly to the complex chemistry occurring in the atmosphere. In this regard, pyruvic acid undergoes photoreactions that lead to many diverse products. The presence of sodium cation near pyruvic acid in an aqueous solution, or its conjugate base in non-acidic conditions, influences the hydration equilibrium and the photosensitivity to UV-visible light of the oxocarboxylic acid. We performed an ab initio metadynamics simulation which serves two purposes: first, it unveils the mechanisms of the reversible hydration reaction between the keto and the diol forms, with a free-energy difference of only 2 kJ/mol at 300 K, which shows the influence of sodium on the keto/diol ratio; second, it provides solvent-shared ion pairing (SSIP) and contact ion pairing (CIP) structures, including Na+ coordinated to carbonyl, for the calculations of the electronic transition energies to an antibonding π* orbital, which sheds light on the photoactivity of these two forms in the actinic region.
