Cd Atom Goes into the Interior of Cluster Induced by Directional Consecutive Assembly of Tetrahedral Units on an Icosahedron Kernel

A single-gold-atom addition regulates sharp redshift in the fluorescence of atomically precise nanoclusters

The manipulation of emission peaks at the atomic level and the investigation of the fluorescent origin mechanism are important issues. In this study, a phosphine-mediated modification method was employed on Au36(TBBT)24 nanocluster to produce a new gold nanocluster Au37(TBBT)21(TPP)2. The structural comparison revealed that Au37(TBBT)21(TPP)2 has a structural framework similar to that of Au36(TBBT)24 except for the reconstruction of its surface motifs, the addition of one gold atom into the kernel, and local structural distortion. Interestingly, compared with Au36(TBBT)24, the emission peak of Au37(TBBT)21(TPP)2 is red-shifted into the NIR-II windows (972 nm vs. 1152 nm in CDCl3) with a quantum yield of 1.5%. Furthermore, the origin of the NIR-II fluorescence in Au37(TBBT)21(TPP)2 and the red-shift mechanism of the emission peak were explored by combining the crystal structure and DFT calculations. The results reveal that the insertion of the 37th gold atom into the core can increase the contribution of the gold atoms to the HOMO orbitals and change the origin of their fluorescence from local excitation (LE) to inter fragment charge transfer (IFCT).

Silvery fullerene in Ag102 nanosaucer

Despite the discovery of a series of fullerenes and a handful of noncarbon clusters with the typical topology of I h-C60, the smallest fullerene with a large degree of curvature, C20, and its other-element counterparts are difficult to isolate experimentally. In coinage metal nanoclusters (NCs), the first all-gold fullerene, Au32, was discovered after a long-lasting pursuit, but the isolation of similar silvery fullerene structures is still challenging. Herein, we report a flying saucer-shaped 102-nuclei silver NC (Ag102) with a silvery fullerene kernel of Ag32, which is embraced by a robust cyclic anionic passivation layer of (KPO4)10. This Ag32 kernel can be viewed as a non-centered icosahedron Ag12 encaged into a dodecahedron Ag20, forming the silvery fullerene of Ag12@Ag20. The anionic layer (KPO4)10 is located at the interlayer between the Ag32 kernel and Ag70 shell, passivating the Ag32 silvery fullerene and templating the Ag70 shell. The t BuPhS- and CF3COO- ligands on the silver shell show a regioselective arrangement with the 60 t BuPhS- ligands as expanders covering the upper and lower of the flying saucer and 10 CF3COO- as terminators neatly encircling the edges of the structure. In addition, Ag102 shows excellent photothermal conversion efficiency (η) from the visible to near-infrared region (η = 67.1% ± 0.9% at 450 nm, 60.9% ± 0.9% at 660 nm and 50.2% ± 0.5% at 808 nm), rendering it a promising material for photothermal converters and potential application in remote laser ignition. This work not only captures silver kernels with the topology of the smallest fullerene C20, but also provides a pathway for incorporating alkali metal (M) into coinage metal NCs via M-oxoanions.

Overcoming Electrostatic Interaction via Pulsed Electroreduction for Boosting the Electrocatalytic Urea Synthesis

Electrocatalytic urea synthesis under ambient conditions offers a promising alternative strategy to the traditional energy-intensive urea industry protocol. Limited by the electrostatic interaction, the reduction reaction of anions at the cathode in the electrocatalytic system is not easily achievable. Here, we propose a novel strategy to overcome electrostatic interaction via pulsed electroreduction. We found that the reconstruction-resistant CuSiOx nanotube, with abundant atomic Cu-O-Si interfacial sites, exhibits ultrastability in the electrosynthesis of urea from nitrate and CO2. Under a pulsed potential approach with optimal operating conditions, the Cu-O-Si interfaces achieve a superior urea production rate (1606.1 μg h-1 mgcat. -1) with high selectivity (79.01 %) and stability (the Faradaic efficiency is retained at 80 % even after 80 h of testing), outperforming most reported electrocatalytic synthesis urea catalysts. We believe our strategy will incite further investigation into pulsed electroreduction increasing substrate transport, which may guide the design of ambient urea electrosynthesis and other energy conversion systems.

Diachronic evolvement from tetra-icosahedral to quasi-hexagonal close-packed bimetal clusters

Here we report a diachronic evolvement from tetra-icosahedral Au30Ag12(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CR)24 to quasi-hcp (hexagonal close-packed) Au47Ag19(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CR)32 via a one-step reduction, in which the size/structure conversion of the two clusters is not a typical Oswald growth process, but involves interface shrinking followed by core rearrangement and surface polymerization. Au30Ag12(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CR)24 has an aesthetic Au18Ag8 kernel that is composed of four interpenetrating Au10Ag3 icosahedra, while Au47Ag19(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CR)32 has a twisted Au19 core capped by a Au12Ag19 shell that are stacked in a layer-by-layer manner with a quasi-hcp pattern. The discovery of the two clusters not only provides further evidence for icosahedral clusters with longer excited-state lifetime compared to hcp-like clusters, but also discloses a double increase in catalytic reactivity for electrocatalytic oxidation of ethanol over quasi-hcp clusters in comparison with icosahedral clusters. This work provides the rationale for reversing the bottom-up growth process to remake bimetal clusters.

Understanding the decomposition process of the Pt1Ag24(SPhCl2)18 nanocluster at the atomic level

We report the decomposition of the Pt1Ag24(SPhCl2)18 nanocluster into a crown-like Pt1Ag4(SR)8 (SR = 2,4-SPhCl2 and 4-SPhBr) complex. UV-vis spectra and single crystal X-ray diffraction were used to track the structure-conversion process. Based on the total structure, the differences in ligand exchange rates at different sites and the effects on the stability were mapped out. This work can not only help us understand the ligand exchange behavior of the clusters, but also provide experimental support for the design of stable metal clusters.

Single-Atom Ru Alloyed with Ni Nanoparticles Boosts CO2 Methanation

Designing catalysts to proceed with catalytic reactions along the desired reaction pathways, e.g., CO2 methanation, has received much attention but remains a huge challenge. This work reports one Ru1Ni single-atom alloy (SAA) catalyst (Ru1Ni/SiO2) prepared via a galvanic replacement reaction between RuCl3 and Ni nanoparticles (NPs) derived from the reduction of Ni phyllosilicate (Ni-ph). Ru1Ni/SiO2 achieved much improved selectivity toward hydrogenation of CO2 to CH4 and catalytic activity (Turnover frequency (TOF) value: 40.00 × 10-3 s-1), much higher than those of Ni/SiO2 (TOF value: 4.40 × 10-3 s-1) and most reported Ni-based catalysts (TOF value: 1.03 × 10-3-11.00 × 10-3 s-1). Experimental studies verify that Ru single atoms are anchored onto the Ni NPs surface via the Ru1-Ni coordination accompanied by electron transfer from Ru1 to Ni. Both in situ experiments and theoretical calculations confirm that the interface sites of Ru1Ni-SAA are the intrinsic active sites, which promote the direct dissociation of CO2 and lower the energy barrier for the hydrogenation of CO* intermediate, thereby directing and enhancing the CO2 hydrogenation to CH4.

The Pivotal Radical Intermediate [Au21(SR)15]+ in the Ligand-Exchange-Induced Size-Reduction of [Au23(SR)16]- to Au16(SR)12

The atomic precision of sub-nanometer-sized metal nanoclusters makes it possible to elucidate the kinetics of metal nanomaterials from the molecular level. Herein, the size reduction of an atomically precise [Au23(CHT)16]- (HCHT = cyclohexanethiol) cluster upon ligand exchange with HSAdm (1-adamantanethiol) has been reported. During the 16 h conversion of [Au23(CHT)16]- to Au16(SR)12, the neutral 6e Au21(SR)15, and its 1e-reduction state, i.e. the 5e, cationic radical, [Au21(SR)15]+, are active intermediates to account for the formation of thermodynamically stable Au16 products. The combination of spectroscopic monitoring (with UV-vis and ESI-MS) and DFT calculations indicates the preferential size-reduction on the corner Au atoms on the core surface and the terminal Au atoms on longer AunSn+1 staples. This study provides a reassessment on the electronic state of the Au21 structure and highlights the single electron transfer processes in cluster systems and thus the importance of the EPR analysis on the mechanistic issues.

Total Structure, Structural Transformation and Catalytic Hydrogenation of [Cu41 (SC6 H3 F2 )15 Cl3 (P(PhF)3 )6 (H)25 ]2- Constructed from Twisted Cu13 Units

Herein, a remarkable achievement in the synthesis and characterization of an atomically precise copper-hydride nanocluster, [Cu41 (SC6 H3 F2 )15 Cl3 (P(PhF)3 )6 (H)25 ]2- via a mild one-pot reaction is presented. Through X-ray crystallography analysis, it is revealed that [Cu41 (SC6 H3 F2 )15 Cl3 (P(PhF)3 )6 (H)25 ]2- exhibits a unique shell-core-shell structure. The inner Cu29 kernel is composed of three twisted Cu13 units, connected through Cu4 face sharing. Surrounding the metal core, two Cu6 metal shells, resembling a protective sandwich structure are observed. This arrangement, along with intracluster π···π interactions and intercluster C─H···F─C interactions, contributes to the enhanced stability of [Cu41 (SC6 H3 F2 )15 Cl3 (P(PhF)3 )6 (H)25 ]2- . The presence, number, and location of hydrides within the nanocluster are established through a combination of experimental and density functional theory investigations. Notably, the addition of a phosphine ligand triggers a fascinating nanocluster-to-nanocluster transformation in [Cu41 (SC6 H3 F2 )15 Cl3 (P(PhF)3 )6 (H)25 ]2- , resulting in the generation of two nanoclusters, [Cu14 (SC6 H3 F2 )3 (PPh3 )8 H10 ]+ and [Cu13 (SC6 H3 F2 )3 (P(PhF)3 )7 H10 ]0 . Furthermore, it is demonstrated that [Cu41 (SC6 H3 F2 )15 Cl3 (P(PhF)3 )6 (H)25 ]2- exhibits catalytic activity in the hydrogenation of nitroarenes. This intriguing nanocluster provides a unique opportunity to explore the assembly of M13 units, similar to other coinage metal nanoclusters, and investigate the nanocluster-to-nanocluster transformation in phosphine and thiol ligand co-protected copper nanoclusters.

[Au14(2-SAdm)9(Dppe)2]+: a gold nanocluster with a crystallization-induced emission enhancement phenomenon

In this work, a gold nanocluster [Au14(2-SAdm)9(Dppe)2]+ was synthesized and structurally determined by X-ray crystallography. The crystals of this cluster exhibit a 50-fold enhancement in quantum yield (5.05% for crystals) compared with its solution. Crystallographic analysis reveals that the weak intermolecular interactions (C-H⋯π, π⋯π) can inhibit the molecular vibration and thus generate the crystallization-induced emission enhancement phenomenon.

Embedding Atomically Dispersed Manganese/Gadolinium Dual Sites in Oxygen Vacancy-Enriched Biodegradable Bimetallic Silicate Nanoplatform for Potentiating Catalytic Therapy

Due to their atomically dispersed active centers, single-atom nanozymes (SAzymes) have unparalleled advantages in cancer catalytic therapy. Here, loaded with chlorin e6 (Ce6), a hydrothermally mass-produced bimetallic silicate-based nanoplatforms with atomically dispersed manganese/gadolinium (Mn/Gd) dual sites and oxygen vacancies (OVs) (PMnSA GMSNs-V@Ce6) is constructed for tumor glutathione (GSH)-triggered chemodynamic therapy (CDT) and O2 -alleviated photodynamic therapy. The band gaps of silica are significantly reduced from 2.78 to 1.88 eV by doping with metal ions, which enables it to be excited by a 650 nm laser to produce electron-hole pairs, thereby facilitating the generation of reactive oxygen species. The Gd sites can modulate the local electrons of the atom-catalyzed Mn sites, which contribute to the generation of superoxide and hydroxyl radicals (• OH). Tumor GSH-triggered Mn2+ release can convert endogenous H2 O2 to • OH and realize GSH-depletion-enhanced CDT. Significantly, the hydrothermally generated OVs can not only capture Mn and Gd atoms to form atomic sites but also can elongate and weaken the O-O bonds of H2 O2 , thereby improving the efficacy of Fenton reactions. The degraded Mn2+ /Gd3+ ions can be used as tumor-specific magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents. All the experimental results demonstrate the great potential of PMnSA GMSNs-V@Ce6 as cancer theranostic agent.

Oriented Self-assembly of Flexible MOFs Nanocrystals into Anisotropic Superstructures with Homogeneous Hydrogels Behaviors

Building of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) homogeneous hydrogels made by spontaneous crystallization remains a significant challenge. Inspired by anisotropically structured materials in nature, an oriented super-assembly strategy to construct micro-scale MOFs superstructure is reported, in which the strong intermolecular interactions between zirconium-oxygen (Zr─O) cluster and glutamic acid are utilized to drive the self-assembly of flexible nanoribbons into pumpkin-like microspheres. The confined effect between water-flexible building blocks and crosslinked hydrogen networks of superstructures achieved a mismatch transformation of MOFs powders into homogeneous hydrogels. Importantly, the elastic and rigid properties of hydrogels can be simply controlled by precise modulation of coordination and self-assembly for anisotropic superstructure. Experimental results and theoretical calculations demonstrates that MOFs anisotropic superstructure exhibits dynamic double networks with a superior water harvesting capacity (119.73 g g-1 ) accompanied with heavy metal removal (1331.67 mg g-1 ) and strong mechanical strength (Young's modulus of 0.3 GPa). The study highlights the unique possibility of tailoring MOFs superstructure with homogeneous hydrogel behavior for application in diverse fields.

Tailoring Carbon Tails of Ligands on Au52(SR)32 Nanoclusters Enhances the Near-Infrared Photoluminescence Quantum Yield from 3.8 to 18.3

One of the important factors that determine the photoluminescence (PL) properties of gold nanoclusters pertain to the surface. In this study, four Au52(SR)32 nanoclusters that feature a series of aromatic thiolate ligands (-SR) with different bulkiness at the para-position are synthesized and investigated. The near-infrared (NIR) photoluminescence (peaks at 900-940 nm) quantum yield (QY) is largely enhanced with a decrease in the ligand's para-bulkiness. Specifically, the Au52(SR)32 capped with the least bulky p-methylbenzenethiolate (p-MBT) exhibits the highest PLQY (18.3% at room temperature in non-degassed dichloromethane), while Au52 with the bulkiest tert-butylbenzenethiolate (TBBT) only gives 3.8%. The large enhancement of QY with fewer methyl groups on the ligands implies a nonradiative decay via the multiphonon process mediated by C-H bonds. Furthermore, single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) comparison of Au52(p-MBT)32 and Au52(TBBT)32 reveals that fewer methyl groups at the para-position lead to a stronger interligand π···π stacking on the Au52 core, thus restricting ligand vibrations and rotations. The emission nature is identified to be phosphorescence and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) based on the PL lifetime, 3O2 quenching, and temperature-dependent PL and absorption studies. The 1O2 generation efficiencies for the four Au52(SR)32 NCs follow the same trend as the observed PL performance. Overall, the highly NIR-luminescent Au52(p-MBT)32 nanocluster and the revealed mechanisms are expected to find future applications.

Stability Issues in Electrochemical CO2 Reduction: Recent Advances in Fundamental Understanding and Design Strategies

Electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2 RR) offers a promising approach to close the anthropogenic carbon cycle and store intermittent renewable energy in fuels or chemicals. On the path to commercializing this technology, achieving the long-term operation stability is a central requirement but still confronts challenges. This motivates to organize the present review to systematically discuss the stability issue of CO2 RR. This review starts from the fundamental understanding on the destabilization mechanisms of CO2 RR, with focus on the degradation of electrocatalyst and change of reaction microenvironment during continuous electrolysis. Subsequently, recent efforts on catalyst design to stabilize the active sites are summarized, where increasing atomic binding strength to resist surface reconstruction is highlighted. Next, the optimization of electrolysis system to enhance the operation stability by maintaining reaction microenvironment especially mitigating flooding and carbonate problems is demonstrated. The manipulation on operation conditions also enables to prolong CO2 RR lifespan through recovering catalytically active sites and mass transport process. This review finally ends up by indicating the challenges and future opportunities.

Highly Stable Layered Coordination Polymer Electrocatalyst toward Efficient CO2 -to-CH4 Conversion

Cu2+ -based materials, a class of promising catalysts for the electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2 RR) to value-added chemicals, usually undergo inevitable and uncontrollable reorganization processes during the reaction, resulting in catalyst deactivation or the new active sites formation and bringing great challenges to exploring their structure-performance relationships. Herein, a facile strategy is reported for constructing Cu2+ and 3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) coordination to stabilize Cu2+ ions to prepare a novel layered coordination polymer (CuPEDOT). CuPEDOT enables selective reduction of CO2 to CH4 with 62.7% Faradaic efficiency at the current density of 354 mA cm-2 in a flow cell, and the catalyst is stable for at least 15 h. In situ spectroscopic characterization and theoretical calculations reveal that CuPEDOT catalyst can maintain the Cu2+ -EDOT coordination structurally stable in CO2 RR and significantly promote the further hydrogenation of *CO intermediates, favoring the formation of CH4 instead of dimerization to C2 products. The strong coordination between EDOT and Cu2+ prevents the reduction of Cu2+ ions during CO2 RR. The finding of this work provides a new perspective on designing molecularly stable, highly active catalysts for CO2 RR.

Restraining Interfacial Cu2+ by using Amorphous SnO2 as Sacrificial Protection Boosts CO2 Electroreduction

The electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2 RR) to formate is of great interest in the field of electrochemical energy. Cu-based material is an appealing electrocatalyst for the CO2 RR. However, retaining Cu2+ under the high cathodic potential of CO2 RR remains a great challenge, leading to low electrocatalytic selectivity, activity, and stability. Herein, inspired by corrosion science, a sacrificial protection strategy to stabilize interfacial crystalline CuO through embedding of active amorphous SnO2 (c-CuO/a-SnO2 ) is reported, which greatly boosts the electrocatalytic sensitivity, activity, and stability for CO2 RR to formate. The as-made hybrid catalyst can achieve superior high selectivity for CO2 RR to formate with a remarkable Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 96.7%, and a superhigh current density of over 1 A cm-2 that far outperforms industrial benchmarks (FE > 90%, current density > 300 mA cm-2 ). In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray diffractionexperimental and theoretical calculation results reveal that the broadened s-orbital in interfacial a-SnO2 offers the lower orbital for extra electrons than Cu2+ , which can effectively retain nearby Cu2+ , and the high active interface significantly lowers the energy barrier of the limited step (* CO2 → * HCOO) and enhances the selectivity and activity for CO2 RR to formate.

High-Rate CO2 Electrolysis to Formic Acid over a Wide Potential Window: An Electrocatalyst Comprised of Indium Nanoparticles on Chitosan-Derived Graphene

Realizing industrial-scale production of HCOOH from the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2 RR) is very important, but the current density as well as the electrochemical potential window are still limited to date. Herein, we achieved this by integration of chemical adsorption and electrocatalytic capabilities for the CO2 RR via anchoring In nanoparticles (NPs) on biomass-derived substrates to create In/X-C (X=N, P, B) bifunctional active centers. The In NPs/chitosan-derived N-doped defective graphene (In/N-dG) catalyst had outstanding performance for the CO2 RR with a nearly 100 % Faradaic efficiency (FE) of HCOOH across a wide potential window. Particularly, at 1.2 A ⋅ cm-2 high current density, the FE of HCOOH was as high as 96.0 %, and the reduction potential was as low as -1.17 V vs RHE. When using a membrane electrode assembly (MEA), a pure HCOOH solution could be obtained at the cathode without further separation and purification. The FE of HCOOH was still up to 93.3 % at 0.52 A ⋅ cm-2 , and the HCOOH production rate could reach 9.051 mmol ⋅ h-1  ⋅ cm-2 . Our results suggested that the defects and multilayer structure in In/N-dG could not only enhance CO2 chemical adsorption capability, but also trigger the formation of an electron-rich catalytic environment around In sites to promote the generation of HCOOH.

Au16 Cd16 (SC6 H11 )20 : A Glance at Structure-Property Relationship

Doping Cd atom(s) into gold clusters is very promising in both theoretical study and practical applications. However, it has long been a challenge to synthesize heavily Cd-doped AuCd bimetallic clusters and thereby reveal their structure-property correlations. Herein a novel AuCd bimetallic cluster: Au16 Cd16 (SC6 H11 )20 (SC6 H11 denotes deprotonated cyclohexanethiol) with a Cd to Au atomic ratio of 1:1 is reported. The precise structure of the cluster determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction demonstrates that it has a unique hexatetrahedron Au14 core and a distinctive shell. Intriguingly, due to the special protecting motifs, the cluster exhibits high stability in various conditions studied, indicating that the geometric structure is crucial in determining the stability of the cluster. Most importantly, the photothermal property of the cluster has been investigated in comparison with those of M13 -kernel (M denotes metal atoms) clusters, and the results imply that the compactness and the Cd atom doping of the core play important roles in dictating the photothermal effect of the cluster. The authors believe that this work will provide some ideas for the rational design of clusters with high stability and excellent photothermal property.
