Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction with Dissolved Carbonates and Near-Zero CO2(aq) by Employing Long-Range Proton Transport

Photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide by BiTeX (X = Cl, Br, I) under visible-light irradiation

In this study, a series of BiTeX (X = Cl, Br, I) photocatalysts were successfully synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method. The synthesis process involved dissolving BiX3 and Te powder in toluene to identify the most efficient material for photocatalytic activity. The main objective of this approach is to facilitate the conversion of carbon dioxide into sustainable solar fuels, such as alcohols and hydrocarbons, offering an appealing solution to address environmental concerns and energy crises. The BiTeX photocatalysts demonstrated significant proficiency in converting CO2 into CH4, particularly BiTeCl exhibited a notable photocatalytic conversion rate of up to 0.51 μmolg-1h-1. The optimized BiTeX photocatalysts displayed a gradual and selective transition from CO2 to CH4, ultimately producing valuable hydrocarbons (C2+). Furthermore, owing to their ability to reduce CO2, these photocatalysts show promise as materials for mitigating environmental pollution.

Capture and Utilization of CO2 with Morpholine for Effective Photocatalytic N-Formylmorpholine Production

Converting into high-value-added products represents the most optimal approach to CO2 utilization. The substitution of CO with CO2 as a potential critical material for formamide production is widely regarded as an ideal pathway and has garnered significant attention. However, high temperatures and pressures remain essential for the reaction, exerting a substantial influence on the utilization process. Herein, N-formylmorpholine was creatively synthesized by integrating the capture and solar-driven utilization of CO2 with morpholine. Notably, a remarkable N-formylmorpholine yield of 11433.3 μmol·h-1·g-1 was obtained, surpassing pure MoO3 by an astounding factor of 89.1 with a N-formylmorpholine yield of 63.8 μmol in 6 h, which is an astonishing increase of 57.5 times compared to MoO3. Both experimental results and density functional theory calculations suggest that the inclusion of Fe can effectively reduce the formation energy barrier while facilitating the desorption process of N-formylmorpholine, thereby optimizing the overall performance.

Revealing the Lattice Carbonate Mediated Mechanism in Cu2(OH)2CO3 for Electrocatalytic Reduction of CO2 to C2H4

Understanding the CO2 transformation mechanism on materials is essential for the design of efficient electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction. In aconventional adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM), the catalysts encounter multiple high-energy barrier steps, especially CO2 activation, limiting the activity and selectivity. Here, lattice carbonate from Cu2(OH)2CO3 is revealed to be a mediator between CO2 molecules and catalyst during CO2 electroreduction by a 13C isotope labeling method, which can bypass the high energy barrier of CO2 activation and strongly enhance the performance. With the lattice carbonate mediated mechanism (LCMM), the Cu2(OH)2CO3 electrode exhibited ten-fold faradaic efficiency and 15-fold current density for ethylene production than the Cu2O electrode with AEM at a low overpotential. Theoretical calculations and in situ Raman spectroscopy results show that symmetric vibration of carbonate is precisely enhanced on the catalyst surface with LCMM, leading to faster electron transfer, and lower energy barriers of CO2 activation and carbon-carbon coupling. This work provides a route to develop efficient electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction based on lattice-mediated mechanism.

Recent advancement on photocatalytic plastic upcycling

More than 8 billion tons of plastics have been generated since 1950. About 80% of these plastics have been dumped in landfills or went into natural environments, resulting in ever-worsening contamination. Among various strategies for waste plastics processing (e.g., incineration, mechanical recycling, thermochemical conversion and electrocatalytic/photocatalytic techniques), photocatalysis stands out as a cost-effective, environmentally benign and clean technique to upcycle plastic waste at ambient temperature and pressure using solar light. The mild reaction conditions for photocatalysis enable the highly selective conversion of plastic waste into targeted value-added chemicals/fuels. Here, we for the first time summarize the recent development of photocatalytic plastic upcycling based on the chemical composition of photocatalysts (e.g., metal oxides, metal sulfides, non-metals and composites). The pros and cons of various photocatalysts have been critically discussed and summarized. At last, the future challenges and opportunities in this area are presented in this review.

Entropy engineering of La-based perovskite for simultaneous photocatalytic CO2 reduction and biomass oxidation

Herein, the high-entropy perovskite, i.e. La(FeCoNiCrMn)O3, was prepared for simultaneous CO2 reduction and biomass upgrading. Based on the synergistic effect between the elements in the high-entropy material, an excellent CO evolution rate of 131.8 μmol g-1 h-1 and a xylonic acid yield of 63.9% were gained.
