Efforts toward Synthetic Photosynthesis: Visible Light-Driven CO2 Valorization

Can Twisted Double Bonds Facilitate Stepwise [2 + 2] Cycloadditions?

Computational studies for a series of low to high strain anti-Bredt alkenes suggest that those with highly twisted bridgehead double bonds and a small singlet-triplet energy gap may undergo facile stepwise [2 + 2] cycloadditions to furnish four membered rings. A selection of reaction substrates, including ethylene, acetylene, perfluoroethylene, and cyclooctyne are considered.

Hierarchical surface-modification of nano-Cu toward one pot H-transfer-coupling-cyclization-CO2 fixation tandem reactions

Fixation of CO2 into dihydroisobenzofuran derivatives has enormous applications in both production of natural products and antidepressant drugs, and reducing the green-house effect. However, the relatively complicated multi-step processes limit the further expansion of such a valuable CO2 conversion strategy. Herein, we hierarchically modify the surface of Cu nanoparticles (NPs) with Ag NPs and the robust metal-organic framework (MOF), ZIF-8, and report the presence of the Cu-Ag yolk-shell nanoalloy based heterogeneous catalysts, Cu@Ag and Cu@Ag@ZIF-8. The latter exhibits a crystalline "raisin bread" structure and specific synergic activity for catalyzing the tandem reactions of intra-molecular H-transfer, C-C and C-O coupling, cyclization, and carboxylation from CO2, leading to the first non-homogeneous preparation of dihydroisobenzofuran derivatives in high yield, selectivity, and recyclability under mild conditions. Theoretical calculations elucidate the tandem reaction pathway synergically catalyzed by Cu@Ag@ZIF-8, which offers insights for designing multiphase catalysts towards both organic synthesis and CO2 fixation through tandem processes in one pot.

Energy transfer photocatalysis: exciting modes of reactivity

Excited (triplet) states offer a myriad of attractive synthetic pathways, including cycloadditions, selective homolytic bond cleavages and strain-release chemistry, isomerizations, deracemizations, or the fusion with metal catalysis. Recent years have seen enormous advantages in enabling these reactivity modes through visible-light-mediated triplet-triplet energy transfer catalysis (TTEnT). This tutorial review provides an overview of this emerging strategy for synthesizing sought-after organic motifs in a mild, selective, and sustainable manner. Building on the photophysical foundations of energy transfer, this review also discusses catalyst design, as well as the challenges and opportunities of energy transfer catalysis.

Probing the Visible Light-Driven Geometrical Isomerization of 4-Arylbut-3-ene-2-amines

A series of thirteen 4-arylbut-3-ene-2-amines were prepared and subjected to photosensitization experiments to interrogate their photostationary state (PS) composition of geometrical olefin isomers (E and Z). The amine PS compositions were found to depend on arene structure and temperature, while being largely independent of nitrogen substitution, solvent, or presence of triplet-quenching oxygen. Photonic efficiency of isomerization (ζp) was found to depend on amine structure, solvent choice, and presence of quencher. With the proper choice of conditions, ζp was able to closely approach the theoretical maximum value of 0.5.

Exploiting Visible Light Triggered Formation of trans-Cyclohexene for the Contra-thermodynamic Protection of Alcohols

We report herein a method for the contra-thermodynamic protection and thermodynamic deprotection of alcohols in which all reagents are returned to their original state. This is accomplished by the use of visible light photochemical energy to drive the formation of a highly strained trans-(Z)-cyclohexene. At STP the product ethers contain more potential energy than the starting materials and, thus, can be catalytically returned to the starting materials, effectively realizing a protection-deprotection scheme paid for with an energy currency.
