Gas Phase Uranyl Activation: Formation of a Uranium Nitrosyl Complex from Uranyl Azide

Gas-phase synthesis of [OU-X]+ (X = Cl, Br and I) from a UO22+ precursor using ion-molecule reactions and an [OUCH]+ intermediate

Difficulty in the preparation of gas-phase ions that include U in middle oxidation states(III,IV) have hampered efforts to investigate intrinsic structure, bonding and reactivity of model species. Our group has used preparative tandem mass spectrometry (PTMS) to synthesize a gas-phase U-methylidyne species, [OUCH]+, by elimination of CO from [UO2(CCH)]+ [M. J. van Stipdonk, I. J. Tatosian, A. C. Iacovino, A. R. Bubas, L. Metzler, M. C. Sherman and A. Somogyi, J. Am. Soc. Mass Spectrom., 2019, 30, 796-805], which has been used as an intermediate to create products such as [OUN]+ and [OUS]+ by ion-molecule reactions. Here, we investigated the reactions of [OUCH]+ with a range of alkyl halides to determine whether the methylidyne is a also a useful intermediate for production and study of the oxy-halide ions [OUX]+, where X = Cl, Br and I, formally U(IV) species for which intrinsic reactivity data is relatively scarce. Our experiments demonstrate that [OUX]+ is the dominant product ion generated by reaction [OUCH]+ with neutral regents such as CH3Cl, CH3CH2Br and CH2CHCH2I.

Conversion of a UO22+ Precursor to UH+ and U+ Using Tandem Mass Spectrometry to Remove Both "yl" Oxo Ligands

Multiple-stage collision-induced dissociation (CID) of a uranyl propiolate cation, [UO2(O2C-C≡CH)]+, can be used to prepare the U-methylidyne species [O═U≡CH]+ [J. Am. Soc. Mass Spectrom. 2019, 30, 796-805]. Here, we report that CID of [O═U≡CH]+ causes elimination of CO to create [UH]+, followed by a loss of H• to generate U+. A feasible, multiple-step pathway for the generation of [UH]+ was identified using DFT calculations. These results provide the first demonstration that multiple-stage CID can be used to prepare both U+ and UH+ directly from a UO22+ precursor for the subsequent investigation of ion-molecule reactivity.

Dinuclear Complexes of Uranyl, Neptunyl, and Plutonyl: Structures and Oxidation States Revealed by Experiment and Theory

Dinuclear perchlorate complexes of uranium, neptunium, and plutonium were characterized by reactivity and DFT, with results revealing structures containing pentavalent, hexavalent, and heptavalent actinyls, and actinyl-actinyl interactions (AAIs). Electrospray ionization produced native complexes [(AnO₂)₂(ClO₄)₃]^- for An:An = U:U, Np:Np, Pu:Pu, and Np:Pu, which are intuitively formulated as actinyl(V) perchlorates. However, DFT identified lower-energy structures [(AnO₂)(AnO₃)(ClO₄)₂(ClO₃)]^- comprising a perchlorate fragmented to ClO₃, actinyl(VI) cation An^VIO₂²⁺, and neutral AnO₃. For U:U and Np:Np, and Np in Np:Pu, the coordinated AnO₃ is calculated as actinyl(VI) with an equatorial oxo, [O_yl═An^VI═O_yl][═O_eq], whereas for Pu:Pu, it is plutonyl(V) oxyl, [O_yl═Pu^V═O_yl][-O_eq^•]. The implied lower stability of Pu^VI versus Np^VI indicates weaker Pu═O_eq versus Np═O_eq bonding. Adsorption of O₂ by the U:U complex suggests oxidation of U^V to U^VI, corroborating the assignment of perchlorate [(An^VO₂)₂(ClO₄)₃]^-. DFT predicts the O₂ adducts are [(An^VIO₂)(O₂)(An^VIO₂)(ClO₄)₃]^- with actinyls oxidized from +V to +VI by bridging peroxide, O₂^2-. In accordance with reactivity, O^2- addition is computed as substantially exothermic for U:U and least favorable for Pu:Pu. Collision-induced dissociation of native complexes eliminated ClO₂ to yield [(AnO₂)(O)₂(AnO₂)(ClO₄)₂]^-, in which fragmented O atoms bridge as oxyl O^-• and oxo O^2- to yield uranyl(VI) and plutonyl(VI), or as oxos O^2- to yield neptunyl(VII), [O_yl═Np^VII═O_yl]³⁺.

Intrinsic reactivity of [OUCH]+ : Apparent synthesis of [OUS]+ by reaction with CS2

RATIONALE

Building on our report that collision-induced dissociation (CID) can be used to create the highly reactive U-alkylidyne species [O=U≡CH]⁺ , our goal was to determine whether the species could be as an intermediate for synthesis of [OUS]⁺ by reaction with carbon disulfide (CS₂ ).

METHODS

Cationic uranyl-propiolate precursor ions were generated by electrospray ionization, and multiple-stage CID in a linear trap instrument was used to prepare [O=U≡CH]⁺ . Neutral CS₂ was admitted into the trap through a modified He inlet and precision leak valves.

RESULTS

The [O=U≡CH]⁺ ion reacts with CS₂ to generate [OUS]⁺ . CID of [OUS]⁺ causes elimination of the axial sulfide ligand to generate [OU]⁺ . Using isotopically labeled reagent, we found that [OUS]⁺ reacts with O₂ to create [UO₂ ]⁺ .

CONCLUSIONS

[O=U≡CH]⁺ proves to be a useful reagent ion for synthesis of [OUS]⁺ , a species that to date has only been created by gas-phase reactions of U⁺ and U²⁺ . Dissociation of [OUS]⁺ to create [OU]⁺ , but not [US]⁺ , and the efficient conversion of the species into [UO₂ ]⁺ , is consistent with the relative differences in U-O and U-S bond energies.

Destruction and reconstruction of UO22+ using gas-phase reactions

While the strong axial U[double bond, length as m-dash]O bonds confer high stability and inertness to UO22+, it has been shown that the axial oxo ligands can be eliminated or replaced in the gas-phase using collision-induced dissociation (CID) reactions. We report here tandem mass spectrometry experiments initiated with a gas-phase complex that includes UO22+ coordinated by a 2,6-difluorobenzoate ligand. After decarboxylation to form a difluorophenide coordinated uranyl ion, [UO2(C6F2H3)]+, CID causes elimination of CO, and then CO and C2H2 in sequential dissociation steps, to leave a reactive uranium fluoride ion, [UF2(C2H)]+. Reaction of [UF2(C2H)]+ with CH3OH creates [UF2(OCH3)]+, [UF(OCH3)2]+ and [UF(OCH3)2(CH3OH)]+. Cleavage of C-O bonds within these species results in the elimination of methyl cation (CH3+). Subsequent CID steps convert [UF(OCH3)2]+ to [UO2(F)]+ and similarly, [U(OCH3)3]+ to [UO2(OCH3)]+. Our experiments show removal of both uranyl oxo ligands in "top-down" CID reactions and replacement in "bottom-up" ion-molecule and dissociation steps.

Intrinsic chemistry of [OUCH]+: reactions with H2O, CH3C[triple bond, length as m-dash]N and O2

We report the first experimental study of the intrinsic chemistry of a U-methylidyne species, focusing on reaction of [OUCH]+ with H2O, O2 and CH3C[triple bond, length as m-dash]N in the gas phase. DFT was also used to determine reaction pathways, and establish the mechanism by which [OUCH]+ is formed through collision-induced dissociation of [UO2(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CH)]+.

Ligand-Supported Facile Conversion of Uranyl(VI) into Uranium(IV) in Organic and Aqueous Media

Reduction of uranyl(VI) to U^V and to U^IV is important in uranium environmental migration and remediation processes. The anaerobic reduction of a uranyl U^VI complex supported by a picolinate ligand in both organic and aqueous media is presented. The [U^VI O₂ (dpaea)] complex is readily converted into the cis-boroxide U^IV species via diborane-mediated reductive functionalization in organic media. Remarkably, in aqueous media the uranyl(VI) complex is rapidly converted, by Na₂ S₂ O₄ , a reductant relevant for chemical remediation processes, into the stable uranyl(V) analogue, which is then slowly reduced to yield a water-insoluble trinuclear U^IV oxo-hydroxo cluster. This report provides the first example of direct conversion of a uranyl(VI) compound into a well-defined molecular U^IV species in aqueous conditions.

Because of the high stability and inertness of the U=O bonds, activation and/or functionalization of UO₂²⁺ and UO₂⁺ remain challenging tasks. We show here that collision-induced dissociation (CID) of the uranyl-propiolate cation, [U^VIO₂(O₂C-C≡CH)]⁺, can be used to prepare [U^VIO₂(C≡CH)]⁺ in the gas phase by decarboxylation. Remarkably, CID of [U^VIO₂(C≡CH)]⁺ caused elimination of CO to create [OU^VICH]⁺, thus providing a new example of a well-defined substitution of an "yl" oxo ligand of U^VIO₂²⁺ in a unimolecular reaction. Relative energies for candidate structures based on density functional theory calculations suggest that the [OU^VICH]⁺ ion is a uranium-methylidyne product, with a U≡C triple bond composed of one σ-bond with contributions from the U df and C sp hybrid orbitals, and two π-bonds with contributions from the U df and C p orbitals. Upon isolation, without imposed collisional activation, [OU^VICH]⁺ appears to react spontaneously with O₂ to produce [U^VO₂]⁺. Graphical Abstract .

RATIONALE

In a previous study [Rapid Commun Mass Spectrom. 2004;18:3028-3034], collision-induced dissociation (CID) of [U^VI O₂ (ClO₄ )]⁺ appeared to be influenced by the high levels of background H₂ O in a quadrupole ion trap. The CID of the same species was re-examined here with the goal of determining whether additional, previously obscured dissociation pathways would be revealed under conditions in which the level of background H₂ O was lower.

METHODS

Water- and methanol-coordinated [U^VI O₂ (ClO₄ )]⁺ precursor ions were generated by electrospray ionization. Multiple-stage tandem mass spectrometry (MSⁿ ) for CID and ion-molecule reaction (IMR) studies was performed using a linear ion trap mass spectrometer.

RESULTS

Under conditions of low background H₂ O, CID of [U^VI O₂ (ClO₄ )]⁺ generates [U^VI O₂ (Cl)]⁺ , presumably by elimination of two O₂ molecules. Using low isolation/reaction times, we found that [U^VI O₂ (Cl)]⁺ will undergo an IMR with H₂ O to generate [U^VI O₂ (OH)]⁺ .

CONCLUSIONS

With lower levels of background H₂ O, CID experiments reveal that the intrinsic dissociation pathway for [U^VI O₂ (ClO₄ )]⁺ leads to [U^VI O₂ (Cl)]⁺ , apparently by loss of two O₂ molecules. We propose that the results reported in the earlier CID study reflected a two-step process: initial formation of [U^VI O₂ (Cl)]⁺ by CID, followed by a very rapid hydrolysis reaction to leave [U^VI O₂ (OH)]⁺ .

Influence of Background H2O on the Collision-Induced Dissociation Products Generated from [UO2NO3]<sup/>

Developing a comprehensive understanding of the reactivity of uranium-containing species remains an important goal in areas ranging from the development of nuclear fuel processing methods to studies of the migration and fate of the element in the environment. Electrospray ionization (ESI) is an effective way to generate gas-phase complexes containing uranium for subsequent studies of intrinsic structure and reactivity. Recent experiments by our group have demonstrated that the relatively low levels of residual H₂O in a 2-D, linear ion trap (LIT) make it possible to examine fragmentation pathways and reactions not observed in earlier studies conducted with 3-D ion traps (Van Stipdonk et al. J. Am. Soc. Mass Spectrom. 14, 1205-1214, 2003). In the present study, we revisited the dissociation of complexes composed of uranyl nitrate cation [U^VIO₂(NO₃)]⁺ coordinated by alcohol ligands (methanol and ethanol) using the 2-D LIT. With relatively low levels of background H₂O, collision-induced dissociation (CID) of [U^VIO₂(NO₃)]⁺ primarily creates [UO₂(O₂)]⁺ by the ejection of NO. However, CID (using He as collision gas) of [U^VIO₂(NO₃)]⁺ creates [UO₂(H₂O)]⁺ and UO₂⁺ when the 2-D LIT is used with higher levels of background H₂O. Based on the results presented here, we propose that product ion spectrum in the previous experiments was the result of a two-step process: initial formation of [U^VIO₂(O₂)]⁺ followed by rapid exchange of O₂ for H₂O by ion-molecule reaction. Our experiments illustrate the impact of residual H₂O in ion trap instruments on the product ions generated by CID and provide a more accurate description of the intrinsic dissociation pathway for [U^VIO₂(NO₃)]⁺. Speciation of uranium-mandelic acid complexes using electrospray ionization mass spectrometry and density functional theory

RATIONALE

Mandelic acid is a complexing agent employed for the liquid chromatographic separation of actinides. However, the types of species and the structural details of the uranyl-mandelate complexes are still unknown. Understanding the nature of these complex species would provide better insight into the mechanism of their separation in liquid chromatography.

METHODS

Formation of different species of the uranyl ion (UO₂ ) with mandelic acid was studied using electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) with a quadrupole time-of-flight analyzer. The different species of uranyl nitrate with mandelic acid (MA) at ligand (L) to metal ratios in the range 1-10 were examined in both positive and negative ion modes. The stability of different species with the possible pathways of formation was scrutinized using density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

RESULTS

In negative ion mode, nitrate-containing UO₂ (MA)₁ , UO₂ (MA)₂ and UO₂ (MA)₃ species were found in good abundance. In positive ion mode, under-coordinated uranyl-mandelate species, and solvated (S) species of types UO₂ (MA)₁ (S), UO₂ (MA)₁ (S)₂ and UO₂ (MA)₂ (S), were observed whereas nitrate-containing species were absent. Interestingly, doubly and singly charged dimeric species were also identified in positive ion mode. The theoretically computed energetics of the various species are in close agreement with their experimentally observed intensities in ESI-MS.

CONCLUSIONS

The most intense peak observed in ESI-MS, UO₂ (MA)₃ , was found to be the energetically most favorable amongst different UO₂ (MA)_n type species. Metal-ligand equilibria studied in the two modes yielded similar results. The combined experimental and quantum chemical investigations predict that T-shape complexes may be formed even in the gas phase. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
