Abstract
The fundamental aspects of aromatic endoperoxide chemistry are reviewed including their synthesis and reactions. The discussion will focus on factors that will both enhance and prevent the formation of aromatic endoperoxides, and on structural features that will provide control over their ability to release singlet oxygen. This approach recognizes the dual use of aromatic hydrocarbons as both precursors of endoperoxides and as valuable materials for incorporation in electronic and photonic devices. Improvement of the existing methods and development of new methods for the synthesis of endoperoxides is necessary as result of the demand to improve existing and to create new applications for these valuable materials. On the other hand, prevention of endoperoxide formation is crucial to inhibit irreversible oxidative degradation of aromatic hydrocarbons and to extend their lifetimes as useful organic semiconductors.

Abstract
The development of supramolecular hosts with effective host-guest properties is crucial for their applications. Herein, we report the preparation of a porphyrin-based metallacage, which serves as a host for a series of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The association constant between the metallacage and coronene reaches 2.37 × 107 M-1 in acetonitrile/chloroform (ν/ν = 9/1), which is among the highest values in metallacage-based host-guest complexes. Moreover, the metallacage exhibits good singlet oxygen generation capacity, which can be further used to oxidize encapsulated anthracene derivatives into anthracene endoperoxides, leading to the release of guests. By employing 10-phenyl-9-(2-phenylethynyl)anthracene whose endoperoxide can be converted back by heating as the guest, a reversible controlled release system is constructed. This study not only gives a type of porphyrin-based metallacage that shows desired host-guest interactions with PAHs but also offers a photooxidation-responsive host-guest recognition motif, which will guide future design and applications of metallacages for stimuli-responsive materials.

Abstract
Two bis-bis(urea) ligands (L1 and L2) incorporating the photoactive 9,10-diphenylanthracene fragment were designed for the construction of anion-coordination-driven assemblies and subsequent oxygenation of anthracene moieties for singlet oxygen storage. The corresponding A2L2-type sulfate complexes [TEA]4[(SO4)2(L1)2] (1) and [TEA]4[(SO4)2(L2)2] (2), where TEA = tetraethylammonium, were achieved by coordinating the ligands L1 or L2 with sulfate anions. Both 1 and 2 were able to undergo [4 + 2] photooxygenation to form endoperoxide photoproducts 1-EPO and 2-EPO, which can be partially converted back to the original anthracene compounds after heating. The structures of 1-EPO and 2-EPO were unambiguously confirmed by X-ray crystallography, NMR and UV-vis spectroscopy, and high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry.

Abstract
The functionalization of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) via B←N Lewis pair formation offers an opportunity to judiciously fine-tune the structural features and optoelectronic properties, to suit the demands of applications in organic electronic devices, bioimaging, and as sensitizers for singlet oxygen generation. We demonstrate that the N-directed electrophilic borylation of 2,6-di(pyrid-2-yl)anthracene offers access to linearly extended acene derivatives Py-BR (R=Et, Ph, C6 F5 ). In comparison to indeno-fused 9,10-diphenylanthracene, the formal "BN for CC" replacement in Py-BR selectively lowers the LUMO, resulting in a much reduced HOMO-LUMO gap. An even more extended conjugated system with seven six-membered rings in a row (Qu-BEt) is obtained by borylation of 2,6-di(quinolin-8-yl)anthracene. Fluorinated Py-BPf shows particularly advantageous properties, including relatively lower-lying HOMO and LUMO levels, strong yellow-green fluorescence, and effective singlet oxygen sensitization, while resisting self-sensitized conversion to its endoperoxide.

Abstract
Progress in photodynamic therapy (PDT) relies on the design and synthesis of photosensitizers that can efficiently sensitize singlet oxygen using visible light irradiation while displaying limited dark toxicity. Here, we highlight the paper by Linker and coworkers published in this issue of Photochemistry and Photobiology, which evaluates the effect of the regiochemistry of pyridinium rings in three isomeric pyridinium alkynylanthracenes on their performance as photosensitizers for PDT in HeLa cells.

Abstract
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an approved and promising treatment approach that utilizes a photosensitizer (PS) to produce cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) through irradiation to achieve tumor noninvasive therapy. However, the limited singlet oxygen generation, the nonspecific uptake of PS in normal cells, and tumor hypoxia have become major challenges in conventional PDT, impeding its development and further clinical application. This review summarizes an overview of recent advances for the enhanced PDT. The development of PDT with innovative strategies, including molecular engineering and heavy atom-free photosensitizers is presented and future directions in this promising field are also provided. This review aims to highlight the recent advances in PDT and discuss the potential strategies that show promise in overcoming the challenges of PDT.

Abstract
Photoactive two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D-COFs) have become promising heterogenous photocatalysts in visible-light-driven organic transformations. Herein, a visible-light-driven selective aerobic oxidation of various small organic molecules by using 2D-COFs as the photocatalyst was developed. In this protocol, due to the remarkable photocatalytic capability of hydrazone-based 2D-COF-1 on molecular oxygen activation, a wide range of amides, quinolones, heterocyclic compounds, and sulfoxides were obtained with high efficiency and excellent functional group tolerance under very mild reaction conditions. Furthermore, benefiting from the inherent advantage of heterogenous photocatalysis, prominent sustainability and easy photocatalyst recyclability, a drug molecule (modafinil) and an oxidized mustard gas simulant (2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfoxide) were selectively and easily obtained in scale-up reactions. Mechanistic investigations were conducted using radical quenching experiments and in situ ESR spectroscopy, all corroborating the proposed role of 2D-COF-1 in photocatalytic cycle.

Abstract
An interparticle system has been devised, allowing airborne singlet oxygen to transfer between particle surfaces. Singlet oxygen is photogenerated on a sensitizer particle, where it then travels through air to a second particle bearing an oxidizable compound-a particulate-based approach with some similarities to reactive oxygen quenching in the atmosphere. In atmospheric photochemistry, singlet oxygen is generated by natural particulate matter, but its formation and quenching between particles has until now not been determined. Determining how singlet oxygen reacts on a second surface is useful and was developed by a three-phase system (particle-air-particle) interparticulate photoreaction with tunable quenching properties. We identify singlet oxygen quenching directly by near-IR phosphorescence in the airborne state and at the air/particle interface for total quenching rate constants (kT) of adsorbed anthracene trapping agents. The air/solid interface kT of singlet oxygen by anthracene-coated particles was (2.8 ± 0.8) × 107 g mol-1 s-1 for 9,10-dimethylanthracene and (2.1 ± 0.9) × 107 g mol-1 s-1 for 9,10-anthracene dipropionate dianion, and the lifetime of airborne singlet oxygen was measured to be 550 μs. These real-time interactions and particle-induced quenching steps open up new opportunities for singlet oxygen research of atmospheric and particulate processes.

Abstract
Stereoselective reactions of singlet oxygen are of current interest. Since enantioselective photooxygenations have not been realized efficiently, auxiliary control is an attractive alternative. However, the obtained peroxides are often too labile for isolation or further transformations into enantiomerically pure products. Herein, we describe the oxidation of naphthalenes by singlet oxygen, where the face selectivity is controlled by carbohydrates for the first time. The synthesis of the precursors is easily achieved starting from naphthoquinone and a protected glucose derivative in only two steps. Photooxygenations proceed smoothly at low temperature, and we detected the corresponding endoperoxides as sole products by NMR. They are labile and can thermally react back to the parent naphthalenes and singlet oxygen. However, we could isolate and characterize two enantiomerically pure peroxides, which are sufficiently stable at room temperature. An interesting influence of substituents on the stereoselectivities of the photooxygenations has been found, ranging from 51:49 to up to 91:9 dr (diastereomeric ratio). We explain this by a hindered rotation of the carbohydrate substituents, substantiated by a combination of NOESY measurements and theoretical calculations. Finally, we could transfer the chiral information from a pure endoperoxide to an epoxide, which was isolated after cleavage of the sugar chiral auxiliary in enantiomerically pure form.

Abstract
Visible-light-promoted α-methoxymethylation and aminomethylation of ketones using methanol as a sustainable C1 source have been developed. With rose bengal as the photosensitizer and air as the green oxidant, the methoxymethylation reactions proceeded smoothly under visible light irradiation at ambient temperature. Additionally, a one-pot one-step α-aminomethylation of ketones was achieved by adding N-nucleophiles. Preliminary mechanism studies suggest that the reaction mainly proceeds via a radical pathway.

Abstract
The site-selective introduction of an oxygen atom into an organic molecule, without the assistance of metals, is a useful transformation, though understanding the mechanistic underpinning of such a process is oftentimes a challenging task. In exploring this chemical space and in building upon experimental precedents, we have utilized computational tools to delineate the mechanistic details of site-selective oxygen atom insertion into a p-quinone methide C(sp3)-C(sp2) bond. To this end, several different reaction pathways for oxygen atom insertion were explored-each encompassing a unique element qualifying the respective pathway as being more or less feasible. The findings of these investigations revealed several features that were vital to this reactivity, including the formation of a dimeric intermediate, interconversion between ground- and excited-state species, and strain. Notably, the latter finding adds to the portfolio of strain-release-driven reactions that have emerged as popular methods to achieve otherwise difficult chemical transformations.

Abstract
Tumor-selective photodynamic therapy is a successful method for ablation of malignant and cancerous cells. Herein, we introduce the design and preparation of functionalized acrylic copolymer nanoparticles with spiropyran (SP) and imidazole groups through a facile semicontinuous emulsion polymerization. Then, Au3+ ions were immobilized and reduced on their surface to obtain photoresponsive gold-decorated polymer nanoparticles (PGPNPs). The prepared PGPNPs were surface-modified with folic acid as a site-specific tumor cell targeting agent and improve intracellular uptake via endocytosis. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analyses, UV-vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images were employed to characterize their spectral and morphological properties. Fluorescence microscopy images and inductively coupled plasma analysis demonstrated the cell line labeling capability and improved targeting efficiency of folate-conjugated PGPNPs (FA-PGPNPs) toward rat brain cancer cells (C6 glioma) with 71.8% cell uptake in comparison with 28.8% for the nonconjugated ones. Nonpolar SP groups are converted to zwitterionic merocyanine isomers under UV irradiation at 365 nm and their conjugation with Au nanoparticles exhibited enhanced photogeneration of reactive oxygen species (ROS). These were confirmed by intracellular ROS analysis and cytotoxicity evaluation on malignant C6 glioma cells. Owing to the strong surface plasmon resonance absorption of gold nanoparticles, FA-PGPNPs provided elevated local photothermal efficiency under near-IR irradiation at 808 nm. The prepared multifunctional FA-PGPNPs with a comprehensive integration of prospective materials introduced promising nanoprobes with targeting ability, enhanced tumor photodynamic therapy, cell tracking, and photothermal therapy.

Abstract
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) still faces two main problems on cancer therapy. One is how to improve PDT efficiency against hypoxic environment of tumors. The other one is how to overcome the limit of short wavelength light to increase PDT treatment depth. In this work, an intraparticle fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) platform is designed to address these problems together. The nanoparticles are doped with multicomponents, such as catalase, two-photon dyes, and traditional photosensitizers, with a simple "one-pot" and green method. On the one hand, catalase can catalyze intracellular H2 O2 into O2 and promote PDT efficiency. One the other hand, photosensitizers can be excited indirectly by two-photon lasers through an intraparticle FRET mechanism, which results in deeper tissue penetration for PDT. These properties are verified through the material induced cytotoxicity in light or in dark and in vivo blocking blood-vessel experiment.

Abstract
We demonstrate the benefits of using cofacial Zn-porphyrins as structural synthons in coordination-driven self-assembled prisms to produce cage-like singlet oxygen (1 O2 ) photosensitizers with tunable properties. In particular, we describe the photosensitizing and emission properties of palladium- and copper-based supramolecular capsules, and demonstrate that the nature of the bridging metal nodes in these discrete self-assembled prisms strongly influences 1 O2 generation at the Zn-porphyrin centers. The PdII -based prism is a particularly robust photosensitizer, whereas the CuII self-assembled prism is a dormant photosensitizer that could be switched to a ON state upon disassembly of the suprastructure. Furthermore, the well-defined cavity within the prisms allowed encapsulation of pyridine-based ligands and fullerene derivatives, which led to a remarkable guest tuning of the 1 O2 production.

Abstract
We report here for the first time the catalytic oxidative dehydrogenation of N-heterocycles by a visible-light organo-photoredox catalyst with low catalyst loading (0.1-1 mol %). The reaction proceeds efficiently under base- and additive-free conditions with ambient air at room temperature. The utility of this benign approach is demonstrated by the synthesis of various pharmaceutically relevant N-heteroarenes such as quinoline, quinoxaline, quinazoline, acridine, and indole.

Abstract
Photosensitizer photochemical parameters are crucial data in accurate dosimetry for photodynamic therapy (PDT) based on photochemical modeling. Progress has been made in the last few decades in determining the photochemical properties of commonly used photosensitizers (PS), but mostly in solution or in vitro. Recent developments allow for the estimation of some of these photochemical parameters in vivo. This review will cover the currently available in vivo photochemical properties of photosensitizers as well as the techniques for measuring those parameters. Furthermore, photochemical parameters that are independent of environmental factors or are universal for different photosensitizers will be examined. Most photosensitizers discussed in this review are of the type II (singlet oxygen) photooxidation category, although type I photosensitizers that involve other reactive oxygen species (ROS) will be discussed as well. The compilation of these parameters will be essential for ROS modeling of PDT.

Abstract
Two chiral binaphthyl-based enantiomers, (R/S)-7, can produce gradual reversal AICD signals from solution to aggregation, which can be attributed to axial chirality transfer to self-assembled helical nanowires in aggregation state.

Abstract
The thermal reaction between biomolecules and singlet oxygen ((1)O2) is important for rendering the genetic material within toxic cells inactive. Here we present results obtained from state-of-the-art multi-reference computational methods that reveal the mechanistic details of the reaction between (1)O2 and two exemplary biomolecular systems: guanine (Gua) and histidine (His). The results highlight the splitting of the doubly degenerate (1)Δg state of O2 upon complexation and the essentially barrierless potential energy profile of the thermally allowed cycloaddition reaction when the O2 molecule is in its lower energy (1)Δg state.
