La-Activated Bicyclo-oligomerization of Acetylene to Naphthalene

Formation and Structure of Gas-Phase Lanthanide(III) Cyanobenzyne Complex (η2-4-CNC6H3)LnCl2-, Obtained via Both the Single- and Dual-Ligand Strategies

The lanthanide(III) cyanobenzyne complexes (η2-4-CNC6H3)LnCl2- (Ln = La-Lu except Eu; Pm was not examined) were generated in the gas phase using an electrospray ionization mass spectrometry coupled with collision-induced dissociation (CID) technique. For all lanthanides except Sm, Eu, and Yb, (4-CNC6H3)LnCl2- can be generated either via a single-ligand strategy through consecutive CO2 and HCl losses of (4-CNC6H4CO2)LnCl3- or via a dual-ligand strategy through successive CO2/C6H5CN or 4-CNC6H4CO2H and CO2 losses of (4-CNC6H4CO2)2LnCl2-. For Sm and Yb, although only reduction products LnCl3- were formed upon CID of (4-CNC6H4CO2)LnCl3-, (4-CNC6H3)LnCl2- were obtained via the dual-ligand strategy without the appearances of other products. CID of (4-CNC6H4CO2)EuCl3- and (4-CNC6H4CO2)2EuCl2- gave EuCl3- and the cyanophenyl complex (4-CNC6H4)EuCl2-, respectively, in both of which the +III oxidation state of Eu was reduced to +II. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that (4-CNC6H3)LnCl2- are formally described as Ln(III) cyanobenzyne complexes, (η2-4-CNC6H3)LnCl2-, with the dianionic cyanobenzyne ligand (4-CNC6H32-) coordinating to the Ln(III) centers through two Ln-C σ bonds, which is in accordance with their reactivities toward water. Benzyne and substituted benzyne complexes (XC6H3)LuCl2- (X = H, 3-CN, 4-F, 4-Cl, and 4-CH3) were also synthesized in the gas phase via the single- and dual-ligand strategies.

Pt+(C2H2)n Complexes Studied with Selected-Ion Infrared Spectroscopy

Platinum cation complexes with multiple acetylene molecules are studied with mass spectrometry and infrared laser spectroscopy. Complexes of the form Pt⁺(C₂H₂)_n are produced in a molecular beam by laser vaporization, analyzed with a time-of-flight mass spectrometer, and selected by mass for studies of their vibrational spectroscopy. Photodissociation action spectra in the C-H stretching region are compared to the spectra predicted for different structural isomers using density functional theory. The comparison between experiment and theory demonstrates that platinum forms cation-π complexes with up to three acetylene molecules, producing an unanticipated asymmetric structure for the three-ligand complex. Additional acetylenes form solvation structures around this three-ligand core. Reacted structures that couple acetylene molecules (e.g., to form benzene) are found by theory to be energetically favorable, but their formation is inhibited under the conditions of these experiments by large activation barriers.

Photodissociation Spectroscopy and Photofragment Imaging of the Fe+(Acetylene) Complex

Tunable laser photodissociation spectroscopy in the 700-400 nm region and photofragment imaging experiments are employed to investigate the Fe⁺(acetylene) ion-molecule complex. At energies above a threshold at 679 nm, continuous dissociation is detected throughout the visible wavelength region, with regions of broad structure. Comparison to the spectrum predicted by time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) indicates that the complex has a quartet ground state. The dissociation threshold for Fe⁺(acetylene) at 679 nm provides the dissociation energy on the quartet potential energy surface. Correction for the atomic quartet-sextet spin state energy difference provides an adiabatic dissociation energy of 36.8 ± 0.2 kcal/mol. Photofragment imaging of the Fe⁺ photoproduct produced at 603.5 nm produces significant kinetic energy release (KER). The photon energy and the maximum value of the KER provide an upper limit on the dissociation energy of D₀ ≤ 34.6 ± 3.2 kcal/mol. The dissociation energies determined from the spectroscopy and photofragment imaging experiments agree nicely with the value determined previously by collision-induced dissociation (38.0 ± 2.6 kcal/mol). However, both values are significantly lower than those produced by computational chemistry at the DFT level using different functionals recommended for transition-metal chemistry.

Dual-Ligand Strategy for the Preparation of Gas-Phase Uranyl(VI) Benzyne Complexes from Uranyl(VI) Benzoates

The uranyl(VI) benzyne complex (η²-C₆H₄)UO₂Cl^- was prepared in the gas phase by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry coupled with collision-induced dissociation. It was formed via a dual-ligand strategy that requires the elimination of benzoic acid or benzene/CO₂ from the uranyl dibenzoate precursor (C₆H₅CO₂)₂UO₂Cl^-. This contrasts the known strategy for the formation of gas-phase benzyne complexes that would result from CO₂/HCl elimination from (C₆H₅CO₂)UO₂Cl₂^-, during which only one benzoate ligand is involved. Such dual-ligand strategy can be extended to the preparation of a series of methyl- and halo-substituted benzyne complexes of uranyl(VI). Density functional theory calculations at the B3LYP level reveal that the benzyne complex (η²-C₆H₄)UO₂Cl^- features a metallacyclopropene structure with the C₆H₄^2- ligand coordinated to uranium(VI) through two polarized U-C_benzyne σ bonds, in accordance with the reactivity test toward water. Dehydrochlorination of the benzyne complex (η²-C₆H₄)UO₂Cl^- from (C₆H₅)UO₂Cl₂^- that originates from decarboxylation of (C₆H₅CO₂)UO₂Cl₂^- with a single benzoate ligand is neither kinetically nor thermodynamically favorable than simple C₆H₅ radical loss to give U^VO₂Cl₂^-. This arises from the presence of an accessible V oxidation state for uranium and accounts for the necessity for the dual-ligand strategy in the preparation of uranyl(VI) benzyne complexes from uranyl benzoate precursors.

Coordination and Spin States in Fe+(C2H2)n Complexes Studied with Selected-Ion Infrared Spectroscopy

Fe⁺(acetylene)_n ion-molecule complexes are produced in a supersonic molecular beam with pulsed laser vaporization. These ions are mass selected and studied with infrared photodissociation spectroscopy in the C-H stretching region, complemented by computational chemistry calculations. All C-H stretch vibrations are shifted to frequencies lower than the vibrations of isolated acetylene because of the charge transfer that occurs between the metal ion and the molecules. Complexes in the size range of n = 1-4 are found to have structures with individual acetylene molecules bound to the core metal ion via cation-π interactions. The coordination is completed with four ligands in a structure close to a distorted tetrahedron. Larger complexes in the range of n = 5-8 have external acetylene molecules solvating this n = 4 core ion via CH-π bonding to inner-shell ligands. DFT computations predict that quartet spin states are more stable for all complex sizes, but infrared spectra for quartet and doublet spin states are quite similar, precluding definitive determination of the spin states. There is no evidence for any of these complexes having acetylenes coupled into reacted structures. This is consistent with computed thermochemistry, which finds significant activation barriers to such reactions.

Probing La and Ce Excited-State Reactivity with Resonant Two-Photon Ionization Spectroscopy

Dehydrogenation and C-C bond cleavage of 1-butyne by the excited states of La and Ce atoms are investigated in laser-ablation metal molecular beams. The excited states of the metal atoms are prepared by resonant excitation, detected by resonant two-photon ionization spectroscopy, and the reaction products are monitored by photoionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The reactivities of La* [5d²(³F)6p (⁴G_5/2°)] and Ce* [4f5d(³F°)6s6p(³P°) (⁵H₅)] excited states are observed to be higher than those of the initial states of the corresponding metal atoms. The higher reactivities of the excited states are attributed to their higher energies and favorable electron configurations to form two covalent bonds of the metal-insertion intermediates. Although both excited La and Ce atoms show increased reactivities, the enhancement for Ce is much more pronounced than that of La, which cannot be explained by electron configurations alone. The larger reactivity enhancement from the initial states to the excited state of the Ce atom than that of La is due to the longer lifetime of the Ce excited state.

Iridium Dimer Anion-Mediated C≡C Triple Bond Cleavage and Successive Dehydrogenation of Acetylene in the Gas Phase

The reactions of the iridium dimer anion [Ir₂]^- with acetylene have been studied by mass spectrometry in the gas phase, which indicate that the [Ir₂]^- anion can consecutively react with C₂H₂ molecules to form the [Ir₂C_2x]^- (x = 1, 2) and [Ir₂C_2yH₂]^- (y = 3-5) anions as major products with the successive release of H₂ molecules at room temperature. The reactions are confirmed by the reactions of the mass-selected product [Ir₂C₂]^- anion with C₂H₂ to produce [Ir₂C₄]^- and [Ir₂C_2yH₂]^- (y = 3-5). Photoelectron spectra and quantum chemistry calculations confirm that the [Ir₂C_2x]^- (x = 1, 2) product anions possess cyclic [Ir(μ-C)₂Ir]^- and [Ir(μ-C)(μ-C₃)Ir]^- structures, implying that the robust C≡C triple bond of acetylene can be completely cleaved by the [Ir₂]^- anion.

A study of the application of graphite MALDI to the analysis of lanthanides and deconvolution of the isobaric species observed

Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation mass spectrometry has always suffered from matrix interference at low-masses making it an unsuitable method for the analysis of low molecular weight analytes. In recent years, there has been considerable interest in the use of graphite as a matrix. In this study, we demonstrate the application of colloidal graphite for the analysis of lanthanides in the positive ion mode. Positive ion mode is of academic interest as spectra are dominated by lanthanide cations, oxides, hydroxides and carbides with the metal having been reduced to oxidation state I, II or III. The ratios of the different ions are considered in terms of redox potentials of the lanthanides and rates of reaction with oxygen. Positive ion mode is shown to be useful as a rapid technique for confirming which metal(s) are present in a sample which can have an application in environmental monitoring, for example. Demonstration of a least squares approach to deconvolution is applied for the complete separation and relative quantification of the different isobaric species observed due to the complex isotope distributions of some lanthanides.

Spectroscopy and formation of lanthanum-hydrocarbon radicals formed by association and carbon-carbon bond cleavage of isoprene

La atom reaction with isoprene is carried out in a laser-vaporization molecular beam source. The reaction yields an adduct as the major product and C-C cleaved and dehydrogenated species as the minor ones. La(C₅H₈), La(C₂H₂), and La(C₃H₄) are characterized with mass-analyzed threshold ionization (MATI) spectroscopy and quantum chemical computations. The MATI spectra of all three species exhibit a strong origin band and several weak vibronic bands corresponding to La-ligand stretch and ligand-based bend excitations. La(C₅H₈) is a five-membered metallacycle, whereas La(C₂H₂) and La(C₃H₄) are three-membered rings. All three metallacycles prefer a doublet ground state with a La 6s¹-based valence electron configuration and a singlet ion. The five-membered metallacycle is formed through La addition and isoprene isomerization, whereas the two three-membered rings are produced by La addition and insertion, hydrogen migration, and carbon-carbon bond cleavage.

Low-Energy Photoelectron Imaging Spectroscopy of Lan(benzene) (n = 1 and 2)

La_n(benzene) (n = 1 and 2) are formed in a pulsed laser-ablation molecular beam source and characterized by low-energy photoelectron imaging spectroscopy. The photoelectron spectrum of La₂(benzene) displays a strong origin band, a short metal-ligand stretching progression, and a weak ring deformation band. Four isomers are considered for La₂(benzene), and the preferred structure is an inverse sandwich with two La atoms residing on the opposite sides of the benzene ring. The ground electronic state of the inverse sandwich is ¹A_1g (D_3d) with (5d_xy,x²-y² + π*)⁴6s² electron configuration. Ionization removes a La-based 6s electron and yields a ²A_1g ion. The spectrum of La(benzene) is similar to the zero-electron kinetic energy spectrum reported previously by our group, although the spectral line width is somewhat broader. The measurement of the photoelectron angular distribution of La(benzene) confirms that the ejected electron has largely a p wave character. The metal-ligand bonding of La₂(benzene) is considerably stronger than that of La(benzene) due to the threefold binding of each La atom in the dilanthanum species and the twofold binding in the monolanthanum complex.
