Abstract
There is a pressing need for methods that can connect enantioenriched organic compounds with readily accessible building blocks via asymmetric functionalization of unreactive chemical bonds in organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry. Herein, the asymmetric chemoselective cleavage of two unactivated C(Ar)-O bonds in the same molecule is disclosed for the first time through an unusual nickel-catalyzed carbomagnesiation. This reaction facilitates the evolution of a novel atroposelective ring-opening difunctionalization. Utilizing readily available dibenzo bicyclic substrates, diverse valuable axially chiral biaryls are furnished with high efficiencies. Synthetic elaborations showcase the application potential of this method. The features of this method include good atom-economy, multiple roles of the nucleophile, and a simple catalytic system that enables the precise magnesiation of an α-C(Ar)-O bond and arylation of a β-C(Ar)-O bond.

Abstract
Adding to the versatile class of ionic liquids, we report the detailed structure and property analysis of a new class of asymmetrically substituted imidazolium salts, offering interesting thermal characteristics, such as liquid crystalline behavior, polymorphism or glass transitions. A scalable general synthetic procedure for N-polyaryl-N'-alkyl-functionalized imidazolium salts with para-substituted linker (L) moieties at the aryl chain, namely [LPhm ImH R]+ (L=Br, CN, SMe, CO2 Et, OH; m=2, 3; R=C12 , PEGn ; n=2, 3, 4), was developed. These imidazolium salts were studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD), NMR spectroscopy and thermochemical methods (DSC, TGA). Furthermore, these imidazolium salts were used as N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand precursors for mononuclear, first-row transition metal complexes (MnII , FeII , CoII , NiII , ZnII , CuI , AgI , AuI ) and for the dinuclear Ti-supported Fe-NHC complex [(OPy)2 Ti(OPh2 ImC12 )2 (FeI2 )] (OPy=pyridin-2-ylmethanolate). The complexes were studied concerning their structural and magnetic behavior via multi-nuclear NMR spectroscopy, SC-XRD analyses, variable temperature and field-dependent (VT-VF) SQUID magnetization methods, X-band EPR spectroscopy and, where appropriate, zero-field 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy.

Abstract
The development of environmentally benign, inexpensive, and earth-abundant metal catalysts is desirable from both an ecological and economic standpoint. Certainly, in the past couple decades, iron has become a key player in the development of sustainable coupling chemistry and has become an indispensable tool in organic synthesis. Over the last ten years, organic chemistry has witnessed substantial improvements in efficient synthesis because of domino reactions. These protocols are more atom-economic, produce less waste, and demand less time compared to a classical stepwise reaction. Although iron-catalyzed domino reactions require a mindset that differs from the more routine noble-metal, homogenous iron catalysis they bear the chance to enable coupling reactions that rival that of noble-metal-catalysis. This review provides an overview of iron-catalyzed domino coupling reactions of π-systems. The classifications and reactivity paradigms examined should assist readers and provide guidance for the design of novel domino reactions.

Abstract
The high abundance, low toxicity and rich redox chemistry of iron has resulted in a surge of iron-catalyzed organic transformations over the last two decades. Within this area, N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands have been widely utilized to achieve high yields across reactions including cross-coupling and C-H alkylation, amongst others. Central to the development of iron-NHC catalytic methods is the understanding of iron speciation and the propensity of these species to undergo reduction events, as low-valent iron species can be advantageous or undesirable from one system to the next. This study highlights the importance of the identity of the NHC on iron speciation upon reaction with EtMgBr, where reactions with SIMes and IMes NHCs were shown to undergo β-hydride elimination more readily than those with SIPr and IPr NHCs. This insight is vital to developing new iron-NHC catalyzed transformations as understanding how to control this reduction by simply changing the NHC is central to improving the reactivity in iron-NHC catalysis.

Abstract
A palladium-catalyzed redox-neutral allylic alkylation of indoles with cyclopropyl acetylenes has been disclosed. Various 1,3-diene indolenine framework bearing a quaternary stereocenter at the C3 position were synthesized straightforwardly in good to excellent yields with high regio- and stereoselectivities. The reaction could be further expanded to the dearomatization of naphthols to synthesize functionalized cyclohexadienones with 1,3-diene motifs. The reaction exhibited high atom economy and good functional group tolerance.

Abstract
A conceptually novel reaction cascade is presented, which allows readily available enynes to be converted into functionalized 1,3-dienes comprising a stereodefined tetrasubstituted alkene unit; such compounds are difficult to make by conventional means. The overall transformation is thought to commence with formation of a metallacyclic intermediate that evolves via cleavage of an unstrained C-X bond in its backbone. This non-canonical cycloisomerization process is followed by a cross-coupling step, such that reductive C-C bond formation regenerates the necessary low-valent metal fragment and hence closes an intricate catalytic cycle. The cascade entails the formation of two new C-C bonds at the expense of the constitutional C-X entity of the substrate: importantly, the extruded group X must not be a heteroelement (X=O, NR), since activated β-C-C bonds can also be broken. This concern was reduced to practice in two largely complementary formats: one procedure relies on the use of alkyl-Grignard reagents in combination with catalytic amounts of Fe(acac)3, whereas the second method amalgamates cycloisomerization with Suzuki coupling by recourse to arylboronic acids and phosphine-ligated palladium catalysts.

Abstract
A low-coordinate iron(ii) complex (CztBu(PztBu)2)Fe[N(SiMe3)2], 1 bearing an NNN-pincer ligand was prepared and fully characterized. Intramolecular C-H activation on the 5-position of a pyrazole at elevated temperatures was observed. Complex 1 was found to be an efficient and chemoselective pre-catalyst for the hydrosilylation of organo carbonyl substrates.

Abstract
Environmentally benign iron catalysts promote a wide variety of chemical transformations; however, insight into the mechanism and active intermediates is far from satisfactory, and the main difficulties lie in directly "seeing" the active species under "live" catalytic conditions. Herein, an unknown sextet Ph(THF)FeCl2 species was well-characterized in a live FeCl3-PhZnCl reaction system for the first time by Raman, in situ IR, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), X-ray absorption spectroscopic (XAS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This work provides insight into the structure and reactivity of catalytically relevant σ-aryliron(iii) species, and shall provide useful guidelines for understanding iron chemistry.

Abstract
An unprecedented palladium-catalyzed allylic alkylation of pronucleophiles with unactivated skipped enynes has been developed. This method provides a straightforward access to a wide array of 1,3-dienes without the need to preinstall leaving groups or employ extra oxidants. The reaction exhibited high atom economy, good functional group tolerance, excellent regioselectivities, and scalability. With D2O as cosolvent, deuterium could be incorporated in high efficiency.
