CO Oxidation on Au/TiO2: Condition-Dependent Active Sites and Mechanistic Pathways

Mie Resonant Metal Oxide Nanospheres for Broadband Photocatalytic Enhancements

Metal oxides are widely used in heterogeneous catalysis as supports to disperse catalytically active nanoparticles, isolated atomic sites, or even as catalysts themselves. Herein, we present a method to produce optically active metal oxide supports that exhibit size-dependent Mie resonances based on TiO2 nanospheres with tunable size, crystalline phase composition, and optical properties. Mie resonant TiO2 nanospheres were used as supports to disperse Au, Pt, and Pd nanoparticles. We have found up to a 50-fold enhancement of the electric field at the metal oxide/metal interface corresponding to wavelength-dependent multipolar resonances in the TiO2 structure. Using Au/TiO2 as a prototypical photocatalyst, we demonstrate broadband rate enhancements between 400 and 800 nm during CO oxidation, with a noticeable increase below 500 nm. This increased reactivity at higher photon energies is due to improved photon utilization and interband absorption in the gold that results in greater secondary electron generation through electron-electron scattering processes, thus leading to higher rates in conjunction with the Mie scattering TiO2 support. This study not only highlights the potential of Mie resonant TiO2 in broadband photocatalytic enhancements but also for developing various Mie resonant metal oxide supports, such as ZnO or Cu2O, which can improve photocatalytic performance for a number of critical reactions. As the chemical and energy industries move toward conversion technologies driven by renewable energy sources, the strategy of designing optical resonances into oxide supports that are already widely used could enable a straightforward adaptation of photochemical processing based on traditional heterogeneous catalysts.

Selective Orbital Coupling: An Adsorption Mechanism in Single-Atom Catalysis

Quantitative understanding of the chemisorption on single-atom catalysts (SACs) by their electronic properties is crucial for the catalyst design. However, the physical mechanism is still under debate. Here, the CO catalytic oxidation on single transition metal (i.e., Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) dopants is used as a theoretical model to explore the correlations between the characteristics of electronic structures and the chemisorption on SACs. For these metal dopants, their atomic d orbitals form several nondegenerate and localized electronic states that are found to be selectively coupled with the π* orbital of the adsorbed O2, which we defined as selective orbital coupling. Based on the selective orbital coupling, we find that the alignment between the selected d state and the π* state determines the bond strength, regardless of the electron occupation number of the selected d states; the electron transfer to form M-O bonding can be provided by the support. Such electron transfer can be related with the electronic metal-support interaction. We attribute the origin of the chemisorption mechanism to the coexistence of the localized orbital of the single transition metal and the continuous energy band of the Au support. Finally, we illustrate how this mechanism dominates the variation trend of the reaction barriers. Our results unravel a fundamental adsorption mechanism in SAC systems.

Synergy of Dendrites-Impeded Atomic Clusters Dissociation and Side Reactions Suppressed Inert Interface Protection for Ultrastable Zn Anode

The sluggish ions-transfer and inhomogeneous ions-nucleation induce the formation of randomly oriented dendrites on Zn anode, while the chemical instability at anode-electrolyte interface triggers detrimental side reactions. Herein, this report in situ designs a multifunctional hybrid interphase of Bi/Bi2O3, for the first time resulting in a novel synergistic regulation mechanism involving: (i) chemically inert interface protection mechanism suppresses side reactions; and more fantastically, (ii) innovative thermodynamically favorable Zn atomic clusters dissociation mechanism impedes dendrites formation. Assisted by collaborative modulation behavior, the Zn@Bi/Bi2O3 symmetry cell delivers an ultrahigh cumulative plating capacity of 1.88 Ah cm-2 at 5 mA cm-2 and ultralong lifetimes of 300 h even at high current density and depth of discharge (10 mA cm-2, DODZn: 60%). Furthermore, under a low electrolyte-to-capacity ratio (E/C: 45 µL mAh-1) and negative-to-positive capacity ratio (N/P: 6.3), Zn@Bi/Bi2O3||MnO2 full-cell exhibits a superior capacity retention of 86.7% after 500 cycles at 1 A g-1, which outperforms most existing interphases. The scaled-up Zn@Bi/Bi2O3||MnO2 battery module (6 V, 1 Ah), combined with the photovoltaic panel, presents excellent renewable-energy storage ability and long output lifetime (12 h). This work provides a fantastic synergistic mechanism to achieve the ultrastable Zn anode and can be greatly promised to apply it into other metal-based batteries.

CO-Induced Dimer Decay Responsible for Gem-Dicarbonyl Formation on a Model Single-Atom Catalyst

The ability to coordinate multiple reactants at the same active site is important for the wide-spread applicability of single-atom catalysis. Model catalysts are ideal to investigate the link between active site geometry and reactant binding, because the structure of single-crystal surfaces can be precisely determined, the adsorbates imaged by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), and direct comparisons made to density functional theory. In this study, we follow the evolution of Rh1 adatoms and minority Rh2 dimers on Fe3O4(001) during exposure to CO using time-lapse STM at room temperature. CO adsorption at Rh1 sites results exclusively in stable Rh1CO monocarbonyls, because the Rh atom adapts its coordination to create a stable pseudo-square planar environment. Rh1(CO)2 gem-dicarbonyl species are also observed, but these form exclusively through the breakup of Rh2 dimers via an unstable Rh2(CO)3 intermediate. Overall, our results illustrate how minority species invisible to area-averaging spectra can play an important role in catalytic systems, and show that the decomposition of dimers or small clusters can be an avenue to produce reactive, metastable configurations in single-atom catalysis.

Reaction-Driven Dynamic and Reversible Transformations of Au Single Atoms and Au-Zr Alloys on Zirconia for Efficient Acetylene Hydrochlorination

Catalysis involving gold supported on metal oxides has undergone extensive examination. However, the nature of the catalytic site under actual reaction conditions and the role of the support continue to be vigorously debated. This study addresses these issues through experimental investigations and theoretical simulations. We explore a novel catalytic mechanism that employs dynamic single-atom catalysis for the hydrochlorination of acetylene. This catalytic mechanism occurs in defective ZrO2-supported Au-Zr single-atom alloys. Specifically, the dynamic single-atom catalysis is a result of the mobility of the gold cation, which is accelerated by Cl radicals and strongly couples with the abundant unsaturated surface sites of ZrO2 in a synergistic manner. As a result, the Au electronic structure dynamically evolves, leading to a decrease in the addition reaction energy barrier. Notably, the Au cation can detach from the Au-Zr alloy structure to catalyze the hydrochlorination of acetylene near the Zr-Ov-Zr sites and then reintegrate back into the Au-Zr alloy structure upon completion of the reaction. This study underscores the significance of dynamic active sites under reaction conditions and their pivotal role in catalysis.

First-Principles Insights into Tungsten Semicarbide-Based Single-Atom Catalysts: Single-Atom Migration and Mechanisms in Oxygen Reduction

Understanding the structural evolution of single-atom catalysts (SACs) in catalytic reactions is crucial for unraveling their catalytic mechanisms. In this study, we utilize density functional theory calculations to delve into the active phase evolution and the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) mechanism of tungsten semicarbide-based transition metal SACs (TM1/W2C). The stable crystal phases and optimal surface exposures of W2C are identified by using ab initio atomistic thermodynamics simulations. Focusing on the W-terminated (001) surface, we screen 13 stable TM1/W2C variants, ultimately selecting Pt1/W2C(001) as our primary model. The surface Pourbaix diagram, mapped for this model under ORR conditions, reveals dynamic Pt1 migration on the surface, triggered by surface oxidation. This discovery suggests a novel single-atom evolution pathway. Remarkably, this single-atom migration behavior is also discerned in seven other group VIII SACs, enhancing both their catalytic activity and their stability. Our findings offer insights into the evolution of active phases in SACs, considering substrate structural arrangement, single-atom incorporation, and self-optimization of catalysts under various conditions.

A Water-Promoted Mars-van Krevelen Reaction Dominates Low-Temperature CO Oxidation over Au-Fe2O3 but Not over Au-TiO2

We provide experimental evidence that is inconsistent with often proposed Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH) mechanistic hypotheses for water-promoted CO oxidation over Au-Fe2O3. Passing CO and H2O, but no O2, over Au-γ-Fe2O3 at 25 °C, we observe significant CO2 production, inconsistent with LH mechanistic hypotheses. Experiments with H218O further show that previous LH mechanistic proposals cannot account for water-promoted CO oxidation over Au-γ-Fe2O3. Guided by density functional theory, we instead postulate a water-promoted Mars-van Krevelen (w-MvK) reaction. Our proposed w-MvK mechanism is consistent both with observed CO2 production in the absence of O2 and with CO oxidation in the presence of H218O and 16O2. In contrast, for Au-TiO2, our data is consistent with previous LH mechanistic hypotheses.

Realistic Modeling of the Electrocatalytic Process at Complex Solid-Liquid Interface

The rational design of electrocatalysis has emerged as one of the most thriving means for mitigating energy and environmental crises. The key to this effort is the understanding of the complex electrochemical interface, wherein the electrode potential as well as various internal factors such as H-bond network, adsorbate coverage, and dynamic behavior of the interface collectively contribute to the electrocatalytic activity and selectivity. In this context, the authors have reviewed recent theoretical advances, and especially, the contributions to modeling the realistic electrocatalytic processes at complex electrochemical interfaces,  and illustrated the challenges and fundamental problems in this field. Specifically, the significance of the inclusion of explicit solvation and electrode potential as well as the strategies toward the design of highly efficient electrocatalysts are discussed. The structure-activity relationships and their dynamic responses to the environment and catalytic functionality under working conditions are illustrated to be crucial factors for understanding the complexed interface and the electrocatalytic activities. It is hoped that this review can help spark new research passion and ultimately bring a step closer to a realistic and systematic modeling method for electrocatalysis.

Tip-activated single-atom catalysis: CO oxidation on Au adatom on oxidized rutile TiO2 surface

Single-atom catalysis of carbon monoxide oxidation on metal-oxide surfaces is crucial for greenhouse recycling, automotive catalysis, and beyond, but reports of the atomic-scale mechanism are still scarce. Here, using scanning probe microscopy, we show that charging single gold atoms on oxidized rutile titanium dioxide surface, both positively and negatively, considerably promotes adsorption of carbon monoxide. No carbon monoxide adsorption is observed on neutral gold atoms. Two different carbon monoxide adsorption geometries on gold atoms are identified. We demonstrate full control over the redox state of adsorbed gold single atoms, carbon monoxide adsorption geometry, and carbon monoxide adsorption/desorption by the atomic force microscopy tip. On charged gold atoms, we activate Eley-Rideal oxidation reaction between carbon monoxide and a neighboring oxygen adatom by the tip. Our results provide unprecedented insights into carbon monoxide adsorption and suggest that the gold dual activity for carbon monoxide oxidation after electron or hole attachment is also the key ingredient in photocatalysis under realistic conditions.

Aldehyde Hydrogenation by Pt/TiO2 Catalyst in Aqueous Phase: Synergistic Effect of Oxygen Vacancy and Solvent Water

The aldehyde hydrogenation for stabilizing and upgrading biomass is typically performed in aqueous phase with supported metal catalysts. By combining density functional theory calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, the model reaction of formaldehyde hydrogenation with a Pt/TiO₂ catalyst is investigated with explicit solvent water molecules. In aqueous phase, both the O vacancy (Ov) on support and solvent molecules could donate charges to a Pt cluster, where the Ov could dominantly reduce the Pt cluster from positive to negative. During the formaldehyde hydrogenation, the water molecules could spontaneously protonate the O in the aldehyde group by acid/base exchange, generating the OH* at the metal-support interface by long-range proton transfer. By comparing the stoichiometric and reduced TiO₂ support, it is found that the further hydrogenation of OH* is hard on the positively charged Pt cluster over stoichiometric TiO₂. However, with the presence of Ov on reduced support, the OH* hydrogenation could become not only exergonic but also kinetically more facile, which prohibits the catalyst from poisoning. This mechanism suggests that both the proton transfer from solvent water molecules and the easier OH* hydrogenation from Ov could synergistically promote aldehyde hydrogenation. That means, even for such simple hydrogenation in water, the catalytic mechanism could explicitly relate to all of the metal cluster, oxide support, and solvent waters. Considering the ubiquitous Ov defects in reducible oxide supports and the common aqueous environment, this synergistic effect may not be exclusive to Pt/TiO₂, which can be crucial for supported metal catalysts in biomass conversion.

Identification of the Stable Pt Single Sites in the Environment of Ions: From Mechanism to Design Principle

For single-atom (SA)-based catalysis, it is urgent to understand the nature and dynamic evolution of SA active sites during the reactions. In this work, an example of Pt SA-Zn_0.5 Cd_0.5 S (Pt SA-ZCS) is found to display interesting phenomena when facing the Brownian collision of ions in aqueous photocatalysis. Via synchrotron radiation, surface techniques, microscopy, and theory calculations, the results show that two kinds of Pt sites exist: Pt_Zn-sub -S₃ (Pt substituting the Zn site) and Pt_ads -S₂ (Pt adsorbing on the surface). In Na₂ S, the S^2- can coordinate with Pt atoms and peel them from the Pt_ads -S₂ sites, but leaves more stable Pt_Zn-sub -S₃ sites, bringing a low but stable catalytic activity (19.40 mmol g^-1 h^-1 ). Meanwhile, in ascorbic acid, the ascorbic acid ions show less complex ability with Pt atoms, but can decrease the migration barrier of Pt_ads -S₂ sites (67.18 down to 35.96 mmol g^-1 h^-1 , 52.03% drop after 6 h). Therefore, the Pt_ads -S₂ sites gradually aggregate into nanoclusters, bringing a high but decayed catalytic activity. Moreover, a Pt SA-ZCS-Sulfur composite is designed mainly covered by Pt_Zn-sub -S₃ sites accordingly (max: 79.09 mmol g^-1 h^-1 , 5% drop after 6 h and QE: 14.0% at 420 nm), showing a beneficial strategy "from mechanism to design principle."

Theoretical study of metal-free catalytic for catalyzing CO-oxidation with a synergistic effect on P and N co-doped graphene

P and N co-doped graphene (PN_xC_y-G with x = 1, 2, 3 and y = 0, 1, 2) is designed to enhance graphene reactivity with a synergistic effect of the P and N atoms for the CO oxidation reaction, focusing on the influence of the N dopant concentration on graphene. The calculated results indicate that increasing two or three coordinated N to P can facilitate charge transfer from the surface onto O₂ molecules. However, the adsorbed O₂ molecule breaks apart on PN₃-G surface, affecting CO oxidation performance. Furthermore, PN₂C₁-G exhibits excellent catalytic activity towards the oxidation of CO via the ER mechanism, which catalyzes CO oxidation with the rate-determining step of only 0.26 eV for the first and 0.25 eV for the second oxidation at 0 K. Additionally, the catalytic oxidation of PN₂C₁-G via Eley–Rideal mechanism prefers to occur at room temperature (298.15 K), with a rate-determining step of 0.77 eV. The reaction rates at 298.15 K is calculated to be 5.36 × 10¹⁶ mol s^–1. The rate constants are obtained according to harmonic transition state theory, which could be supportive for catalytic oxidation of CO on the experiment.

Manufacture of TiO2 nanoparticles with high preparation efficiency and photocatalytic performance by controlling the parameters of pulsed laser ablation in liquid

This study proposes a method to improve the production efficiency and photocatalytic performance of TiO2 nanoparticles using the pulsed laser ablation in liquid (PLAL) method to optimise preparation parameters. In this study, the variation of particle size, morphology, preparation, and catalytic efficiency due to the increase in the number of pulses is studied. The mechanism of particle morphology change is analysed using thermodynamic simulation. The density functional theory (DFT) is used to calculate and characterise the reason why the special structure formed by particle breaking improves the photocatalytic performance. In addition, the influence of the law of solution height on particle breakage is summarised to obtain an optimised preparation parameter. The proposed method provides a reference for the selection of parameters in actual production.

Measuring and directing charge transfer in heterogenous catalysts

Precise control of charge transfer between catalyst nanoparticles and supports presents a unique opportunity to enhance the stability, activity, and selectivity of heterogeneous catalysts. While charge transfer is tunable using the atomic structure and chemistry of the catalyst-support interface, direct experimental evidence is missing for three-dimensional catalyst nanoparticles, primarily due to the lack of a high-resolution method that can probe and correlate both the charge distribution and atomic structure of catalyst/support interfaces in these structures. We demonstrate a robust scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) method that simultaneously visualizes the atomic-scale structure and sub-nanometer-scale charge distribution in heterogeneous catalysts using a model Au-catalyst/SrTiO₃-support system. Using this method, we further reveal the atomic-scale mechanisms responsible for the highly active perimeter sites and demonstrate that the charge transfer behavior can be readily controlled using post-synthesis treatments. This methodology provides a blueprint for better understanding the role of charge transfer in catalyst stability and performance and facilitates the future development of highly active advanced catalysts.

Coadsorption Interfered CO Oxidation over Atomically Dispersed Au on h-BN

Similar to the metal centers in biocatalysis and homogeneous catalysis, the metal species in single atom catalysts (SACs) are charged, atomically dispersed and stabilized by support and substrate. The reaction condition dependent catalytic performance of SACs has long been realized, but seldom investigated before. We investigated CO oxidation pathways over SACs in reaction conditions using atomically dispersed Au on h-BN (AuBN) as a model with extensive first-principles-based calculations. We demonstrated that the adsorption of reactants, namely CO, O₂ and CO₂, and their coadsorption with reaction species on AuBN would be condition dependent, leading to various reaction species with different reactivity and impact the CO conversion. Specifically, the revised Langmuir–Hinshelwood pathway with the CO-mediated activation of O₂ and dissociation of cyclic peroxide intermediate followed by the Eley–Rideal type reduction is dominant at high temperatures, while the coadsorbed CO-mediated dissociation of peroxide intermediate becomes plausible at low temperatures and high CO partial pressures. Carbonate species would also form in existence of CO₂, react with coadsorbed CO and benefit the conversion. The findings highlight the origin of the condition-dependent CO oxidation performance of SACs in detailed conditions and may help to rationalize the current understanding of the superior catalytic performance of SACs.

Dilute Alloys Based on Au, Ag, or Cu for Efficient Catalysis: From Synthesis to Active Sites

The development of new catalyst materials for energy-efficient chemical synthesis is critical as over 80% of industrial processes rely on catalysts, with many of the most energy-intensive processes specifically using heterogeneous catalysis. Catalytic performance is a complex interplay of phenomena involving temperature, pressure, gas composition, surface composition, and structure over multiple length and time scales. In response to this complexity, the integrated approach to heterogeneous dilute alloy catalysis reviewed here brings together materials synthesis, mechanistic surface chemistry, reaction kinetics, in situ and operando characterization, and theoretical calculations in a coordinated effort to develop design principles to predict and improve catalytic selectivity. Dilute alloy catalysts─in which isolated atoms or small ensembles of the minority metal on the host metal lead to enhanced reactivity while retaining selectivity─are particularly promising as selective catalysts. Several dilute alloy materials using Au, Ag, and Cu as the majority host element, including more recently introduced support-free nanoporous metals and oxide-supported nanoparticle "raspberry colloid templated (RCT)" materials, are reviewed for selective oxidation and hydrogenation reactions. Progress in understanding how such dilute alloy catalysts can be used to enhance selectivity of key synthetic reactions is reviewed, including quantitative scaling from model studies to catalytic conditions. The dynamic evolution of catalyst structure and composition studied in surface science and catalytic conditions and their relationship to catalytic function are also discussed, followed by advanced characterization and theoretical modeling that have been developed to determine the distribution of minority metal atoms at or near the surface. The integrated approach demonstrates the success of bridging the divide between fundamental knowledge and design of catalytic processes in complex catalytic systems, which can accelerate the development of new and efficient catalytic processes.

Designing Sites in Heterogeneous Catalysis: Are We Reaching Selectivities Competitive With Those of Homogeneous Catalysts?

A critical review of different prominent nanotechnologies adapted to catalysis is provided, with focus on how they contribute to the improvement of selectivity in heterogeneous catalysis. Ways to modify catalytic sites range from the use of the reversible or irreversible adsorption of molecular modifiers to the immobilization or tethering of homogeneous catalysts and the development of well-defined catalytic sites on solid surfaces. The latter covers methods for the dispersion of single-atom sites within solid supports as well as the use of complex nanostructures, and it includes the post-modification of materials via processes such as silylation and atomic layer deposition. All these methodologies exhibit both advantages and limitations, but all offer new avenues for the design of catalysts for specific applications. Because of the high cost of most nanotechnologies and the fact that the resulting materials may exhibit limited thermal or chemical stability, they may be best aimed at improving the selective synthesis of high value-added chemicals, to be incorporated in organic synthesis schemes, but other applications are being explored as well to address problems in energy production, for instance, and to design greener chemical processes. The details of each of these approaches are discussed, and representative examples are provided. We conclude with some general remarks on the future of this field.

Realistic Modelling of Dynamics at Nanostructured Interfaces Relevant to Heterogeneous Catalysis

The focus of this short review is directed towards investigations of the dynamics of nanostructured metallic heterogeneous catalysts and the evolution of interfaces during reaction—namely, the metal–gas, metal–liquid, and metal–support interfaces. Indeed, it is of considerable interest to know how a metal catalyst surface responds to gas or liquid adsorption under reaction conditions, and how its structure and catalytic properties evolve as a function of its interaction with the support. This short review aims to offer the reader a birds-eye view of state-of-the-art methods that enable more realistic simulation of dynamical phenomena at nanostructured interfaces by exploiting resource-efficient methods and/or the development of computational hardware and software.

Studies of adsorption of α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds on heterogeneous Au/CeO2, Au/TiO2 and Au/SiO2 catalysts during reduction by hydrogen

Our research focuses on phenomena accompanying adsorption of mesityl oxide (4-methylpent-3-en-2-one) on the surface of heterogeneous supported gold catalysts: Au/CeO₂, Au/TiO₂ and Au/SiO₂. We have studied reduction in the gas phase of (volatile) α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds (R-(V)ABUCC) which mesityl oxide is a basic model of. In situ infrared (IR) spectroscopy was employed to establish that the most active catalysts allow adsorption of conjugated ketones or aldehydes in the enolate (i.e. bridge-like adsorption through the oxygen from the carbonyl group and the β-carbon) and carboxylic form or with the ^αC Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> ^βC double bond on a Lewis acidic site. Reductive properties of the catalysts and pure supports were studied by temperature-programmed reduction (TPR). We show that cerium(iv) oxide (CeO₂, ceria) and titanium(iv) oxide (TiO₂, titania) when decorated with gold nanoparticles (AuNP) can interact with hydrogen at temperatures approx. 150 °C lower than typical for pure oxides what includes even cyclic adsorption and instant release of H₂ below 100 °C in the case of gold–ceria system. Morphology and structure characterisation by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) confirms that, with the obtained Au loadings, we achieved excellent dispersion of AuNPs while maintaining their small size, preferably below 5 nm, even though the Au/CeO₂ catalyst contained broad distribution of AuNPs sizes.

Understanding Single-Atom Catalysis in View of Theory

In the past decade, isolated single atoms have been successfully dispersed on various substrates, with their potential applications being intensively investigated in different reactions. While the essential target of research in single-atom catalysis is the precise synthesis of stable single-atom catalysts (SACs) with clear configurations and impressive catalytic performance, theoretical investigations have also played important roles in identifying active sites, revealing catalytic mechanisms, and establishing structure-activity relationships. Nevertheless, special attention should still be paid in theoretical works to the particularity of SACs. In this Perspective, we will summarize the theoretical progress made on the understanding of the rich phenomena in single-atom catalysis. We focus on the determination of local structures of SACs via comparison between experiments and simulations, the discovery of distinctive catalytic mechanisms induced by multiadsorption, synergetic effects, and dynamic evolutions, to name a few, the proposal of criteria for theoretically designing SACs, and the extension of original concepts of single-atom catalysis. We hope that this Perspective will inspire more in-depth thinking on future theoretical studies of SACs.

Dynamics of Heterogeneous Catalytic Processes at Operando Conditions

The rational design of high-performance catalysts is hindered by the lack of knowledge of the structures of active sites and the reaction pathways under reaction conditions, which can be ideally addressed by an in situ/operando characterization. Besides the experimental insights, a theoretical investigation that simulates reaction conditions-so-called operando modeling-is necessary for a plausible understanding of a working catalyst system at the atomic scale. However, there is still a huge gap between the current widely used computational model and the concept of operando modeling, which should be achieved through multiscale computational modeling. This Perspective describes various modeling approaches and machine learning techniques that step toward operando modeling, followed by selected experimental examples that present an operando understanding in the thermo- and electrocatalytic processes. At last, the remaining challenges in this area are outlined.

Kinetics and Thermodynamics of CO Oxidation by (TiO2)6

Molecular level insights into the mechanism and thermodynamics of CO oxidation by a (TiO2)6 cluster have been obtained through density functional calculations. Thereby, in this study, as an example, two different structural isomers of (TiO2)6 are considered with the purpose of understanding the interplay between local structure and activity for the CO oxidation reaction. Active sites in the two isomeric forms were identified on the basis of global and local reactivity descriptors. For the oxidation of CO to CO2, the study considered both sequential and simultaneous adsorption of CO and O2 on (TiO2)6 cluster through the ER and LH mechanisms, respectively. Three different pathways were obtained for CO oxidation by (TiO2)6 cluster, and the mechanistic route of each pathway were identified by locating the transition-state and intermediate structures. The effect of temperature on the rate of the reaction was investigated within the harmonic approximation. The structure-dependent activity of the cluster was rationalized through reactivity descriptors and analysis of the frontier orbitals.

Surface Density Dependent Catalytic Activity of Single Palladium Atoms Supported on Ceria*

The analogy between single-atom catalysts (SACs) and molecular catalysts predicts that the specific catalytic activity of these systems is constant. We provide evidence that this prediction is not necessarily true. As a case in point, we show that the specific activity over ceria-supported single Pd atoms linearly increases with metal atom density, originating from the cumulative enhancement of CeO₂ reducibility. The long-range electrostatic footprints (≈1.5 nm) around each Pd site overlap with each other as surface Pd density increases, resulting in an observed deviation from constant specific activity. These cooperative effects exhaust previously active O atoms above a certain Pd density, leading to their permanent removal and a consequent drop in reaction rate. The findings of our combined experimental and computational study show that the specific catalytic activity of reducible oxide-supported single-atom catalysts can be tuned by varying the surface density of single metal atoms.

Lattice oxygen self-spillover on reducible oxide supported metal cluster: the water-gas shift reaction on Cu/CeO2 catalyst

In this work we have tackled one of the most challenging problems in nanocatalysis namely understanding the role of reducible oxide supports in metal catalyzed reactions. As a prototypical example, the very well-studied water gas shift reaction catalyzed by CeO2 supported Cu nanoclusters is chosen to probe how the reducible oxide support modifies the catalyst structures, catalytically active sites and even the reaction mechanisms. By employing density functional theory calculations in conjunction with a genetic algorithm and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, we have identified an unprecedented spillover of the surface lattice oxygen from the ceria support to the Cu cluster, which is rarely considered previously but may widely exist in oxide supported metal catalysts under realistic conditions. The oxygen spillover causes a highly energetic preference of the monolayered configuration of the supported Cu nanocluster, compared to multilayered configurations. Due to the strong metal-oxide interaction, after the O spillover the monolayered cluster is highly oxidized by transferring electrons to the Ce 4f orbitals. The water-gas-shift reaction is further found to more favorably take place on the supported copper monolayer than the copper-ceria periphery, where the on-site oxygen and the adjacent oxidized Cu sites account for the catalytically active sites, synergistically facilitating the water dissociation and the carboxyl formation. The present work provides mechanistic insights into the strong metal-support interaction and its role in catalytic reactions, which may pave a way towards the rational design of metal-oxide catalysts with promising stability, dispersion and catalytic activity.

Structure Sensitivity of Au-TiO2 Strong Metal-Support Interactions

Strong metal-support interactions (SMSI) is an important concept in heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, we demonstrate that the Au-TiO₂ SMSI of Au/TiO₂ catalysts sensitively depends on both Au nanoparticle (NP) sizes and TiO₂ facets. Au NPs of ca. 5 nm are more facile undergo Au-TiO₂ SMSI than those of ca. 2 nm, while TiO₂ {001} and {100} facets are more facile than TiO₂ {101} facets. The resulting capsulating TiO_2-x overlayers on Au NPs exhibit an average oxidation state between +3 and +4 and a Au-to-TiO_2-x charge transfer, which, combined with calculations, determines the Ti:O ratio as ca. 6:11. Both TiO_2-x overlayers and TiO_2-x -Au interface exhibit easier lattice oxygen activation and higher intrinsic activity in catalyzing low-temperature CO oxidation than the starting Au-TiO₂ interface. These results advance fundamental understanding of SMSI and demonstrate engineering of metal NP size and oxide facet as an effective strategy to tune the SMSI for efficient catalysis.

The dome of gold nanolized for catalysis

Gold is noble in bulk but turns out to be a superior catalyst at the nanoscale when supported on oxides, in particular titania. The critical thickness for activity, namely two-layer gold particles on titania, observed two decades ago represents one of the most influential mysteries in the recent history of heterogeneous catalysis. By developing a Bayesian optimization controlled global potential energy surface exploration tool with machine learning potential, here we determine the atomic structures of gold particles within ∼2 nm on a TiO2 surface. We show that the smallest stable Au nanoparticle is Au24 which is pinned on the oxygen-rich TiO2 and exhibits an unprecedented dome architecture made by a single-layer Au sheet but with an apparent two-atomic-layer height. Importantly, this has the highest activity for CO oxidation at room temperature. The physical origin of the high activity is the outstanding electron storage ability of the nano-dome, which activates the lattice oxygen of the oxide. The determined CO oxidation mechanism, the simulated rate and the fitted apparent energy barrier are consistent with known experimental facts, providing key evidence for the presence of both the high-activity Au dome and the low-activity close-packed Au particles in real catalysts. The future direction for the preparation of active and stable Au-based catalysts is thus outlined.

Theoretical Understandings of Graphene-based Metal Single-Atom Catalysts: Stability and Catalytic Performance

Research on heterogeneous single-atom catalysts (SACs) has become an emerging frontier in catalysis science because of their advantages in high utilization of noble metals, precisely identified active sites, high selectivity, and tunable activity. Graphene, as a one-atom-thick two-dimensional carbon material with unique structural and electronic properties, has been reported to be a superb support for SACs. Herein, we provide an overview of recent progress in investigations of graphene-based SACs. Among the large number of publications, we will selectively focus on the stability of metal single-atoms (SAs) anchored on different sites of graphene support and the catalytic performances of graphene-based SACs for different chemical reactions, including thermocatalysis and electrocatalysis. We will summarize the fundamental understandings on the electronic structures and their intrinsic connection with catalytic properties of graphene-based SACs, and also provide a brief perspective on the future design of efficient SACs with graphene and graphene-like materials.

Understanding the Activity of Single-Atom Catalysis from Frontier Orbitals

The d-band center and charge states are often used to analyze the catalytic activity of noble or transition metal surfaces and clusters, but their applicability for single-atom catalysts (SACs) is unsure. This work suggests that the spatial structure and orientation of frontier orbitals which are closest to the Fermi level of SACs play a vital role. Taking adsorption of several molecules and CO oxidization on C_{3}N-supported single-atom Au as examples, we demonstrate that adsorption and catalytic activities are well correlated with the characteristics of frontier orbitals. This work provides an effective guidance for understanding the performance of single-atom catalysts.

Nanoscale Spatial Distribution of Supported Nanoparticles Controls Activity and Stability in Powder Catalysts for CO Oxidation and Photocatalytic H2 Evolution

Supported metal nanoparticles are essential components of high-performing catalysts, and their structures are intensely researched. In comparison, nanoparticle spatial distribution in powder catalysts is conventionally not quantified, and the influence of this collective property on catalyst performance remains poorly investigated. Here, we demonstrate a general colloidal self-assembly method to control uniformity of nanoparticle spatial distribution on common industrial powder supports. We quantify distributions on the nanoscale using image statistics and show that the type of nanospatial distribution determines not only the stability, but also the activity of heterogeneous catalysts. Widely investigated systems (Au-TiO2 for CO oxidation thermocatalysis and Pd-TiO2 for H2 evolution photocatalysis) were used to showcase the universal importance of nanoparticle spatial organization. Spatially and temporally resolved microkinetic modeling revealed that nonuniformly distributed Au nanoparticles suffer from local depletion of surface oxygen, and therefore lower CO oxidation activity, as compared to uniformly distributed nanoparticles. Nanoparticle spatial distribution also determines the stability of Pd-TiO2 photocatalysts, because nonuniformly distributed nanoparticles sinter while uniformly distributed nanoparticles do not. This work introduces new tools to evaluate and understand catalyst collective (ensemble) properties in powder catalysts, which thereby pave the way to more active and stable heterogeneous catalysts.

Sustainable Catalytic Processes Driven by Graphene-Based Materials

In the recent two decades, graphene-based materials have achieved great successes in catalytic processes towards sustainable production of chemicals, fuels and protection of the environment. In graphene, the carbon atoms are packed into a well-defined sp2-hybridized honeycomb lattice, and can be further constructed into other dimensional allotropes such as fullerene, carbon nanotubes, and aerogels. Graphene-based materials possess appealing optical, thermal, and electronic properties, and the graphitic structure is resistant to extreme conditions. Therefore, the green nature and robust framework make the graphene-based materials highly favourable for chemical reactions. More importantly, the open structure of graphene affords a platform to host a diversity of functional groups, dopants, and structural defects, which have been demonstrated to play crucial roles in catalytic processes. In this perspective, we introduced the potential active sites of graphene in green catalysis and showcased the marriage of metal-free carbon materials in chemical synthesis, catalytic oxidation, and environmental remediation. Future research directions are also highlighted in mechanistic investigation and applications of graphene-based materials in other promising catalytic systems.
