Slow Magnetic Relaxation in a Lanthanide-[1]Metallocenophane Complex

A Combined Synthetic, Magnetic, and Theoretical Study on Enhancing Ligand-Field Axiality for Dy(III) Single-Molecule Magnets Supported by Ferrocene Diamide Ligands

Molecular design is crucial for improving the performance of single-molecule magnets (SMMs). For dysprosium(III) SMMs, enhancing ligand-field axiality is a well-suited strategy to achieve high-performance SMMs. We synthesized a series of dysprosium(III) complexes, (NN^TIPS)DyBr(THF)₂ (1, NN^TIPS = fc(NSiⁱPr₃)₂; fc = 1,1'-ferrocenediyl, THF = tetrahydrofuran), [(NN^TIPS)Dy(THF)₃][BPh₄] (2), (NN^TIPS)DyI(THF)₂ (3), and [(NN^TBS)Dy(THF)₃][BPh₄] (4, NN^TBS = fc(NSi^tBuMe₂)₂), supported by ferrocene diamide ligands. X-ray crystallography shows that the rigid ferrocene backbone enforces a nearly axial ligand field with weakly coordinating equatorial ligands. Dysprosium(III) complexes 1-4 all exhibit slow magnetic relaxation under zero fields and possess high effective barriers (U_eff) around 1000 K, comparable to previously reported (NN^TBS)DyI(THF)₂ (5). We probed the influences of structural variations on SMM behaviors by theoretical calculations and found that the distribution of negative charges defined by r_q, i.e., the ratio of the charges on the axial ligands to the charges on the equatorial ligands, plays a decisive role. Moreover, theoretical calculations on a series of model complexes 1'-5' without equatorial ligands unveil that the axial crystal-field parameters B₂⁰ are directly proportional to the N-Dy-N angles and support the hypothesis that enhancing the ligand-field axiality could improve SMM performance.

Tuning symmetry and magnetic blocking of an exchange-coupled lanthanide ion in isomeric, tetrametallic complexes: [LnCl6(TiCp2)3]

The synthesis and magnetic properties of two pairs of isomeric, exchange-coupled complexes, [LnCl₆(TiCp₂)₃] (Ln = Gd, Tb), are reported. In each isomeric pair, the central lanthanide ion adopts either a pseudo-octahedral (O-Ln) or trigonal prismatic geometry (TP-Ln) yielding complexes with C ₁ or C _3h molecular symmetry, respectively. Ferromagnetic exchange coupling is observed in TP-Ln as indicated by the increases in χ _m T below 30 K. For TP-Gd, a fit to the susceptibility reveals ferromagnetic coupling between the Gd³⁺ ion and the Ti³⁺ ions (J = 2.90(1) cm^-1). In contrast to O-Tb, which shows no single-molecule magnetic behavior, the TP-Tb complex presents slow magnetic relaxation with a 100s-blocking temperature of 2.3 K and remanent magnetization at zero field up to 3 K. The calculated electronic structures of both compounds imply that trigonal prismatic geometry of TP-Tb is critical to the observed magnetic behavior.

Lanthanide Single-molecule Magnets: Synthetic Strategy, Structures, Properties and Recent Advances

Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) show wide potential applications in the field of ultrahigh-density storage materials, quantum computing, spintronics, and so on. Lanthanide (Ln) SMMs, as an important category of SMMs, open up a promising prospect due to their large magnetic moments and huge magnetic anisotropy. However, the construction of high performance for Ln SMMs remains an enormous challenge. Although remarkable advances are focused on the topic of Ln SMMs, the research on Ln SMMs with different nuclear numbers is still deficient. Therefore, this review summarizes the design strategies for the construction of Ln SMMs, as well as the metal skeleton types. Furthermore, we collect reported Ln SMMs with mononuclearity, dinuclearity, and multinuclearity (three or more Ln spin centers) and the SMM properties including energy barrier (U_eff ) and pre-exponential factor (τ₀ ) are described. Finally, Ln SMMs with low-nuclearity SMMs, especially for single-ion magnets (SIMs), are highlighted to understand the correlations between structures and magnetic behavior of the detail SMM properties are described. We expect the review can shed light on the future developments of high-performance Ln SMMs.

Tetraanionic arachno-Carboranyl Ligand Imparts Strong Axiality to Terbium(III) Single-Molecule Magnets

A family of fully sandwiched arachno-lanthanacarborane complexes formulated as {η⁶ -[μ-1,2-[o-C₆ H₄ (CH₂ )₂ ]-1,2-C₂ B₁₀ H₁₀ ]₂ Ln}{Li₅ (THF)₁₀ } (Ln=Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Y) is successfully synthesized, where the "carbons-adjacent" carboranyl ligand (arachno-R₂ -C₂ B₁₀ H₁₀ ^4- ) bears four negative charges and coordinates to the central lanthanide ions using the hexagonal η⁶ C₂ B₄ face. Thus, the central lanthanide cations are pseudo-twelve-coordinate and have an approximate pseudo-D_6h symmetry or hexagonal-prismatic geometry. As the crystal field effect imparted by this geometry is still unknown, we thoroughly investigated the magnetic properties of this series of complexes and found that the crystal field imposed by this ligand causes a relation of Tb>Dy>Ho>Er for the energy gaps between the ground and the first excited states, which is of striking resemblance to the ferrocenophane and phthalocyanine ligands although the latter two ligands give disparate local coordination geometries. Moreover, the effective energy barrier to magnetization reversal of 445(10) K, the observable hysteresis loop up to 4 K and the relaxation time of the yttrium-diluted sample reaching 193(17) seconds at 2 K under an optimized field for the Tb analogue of this family of arachno-lanthanacarborane complexes, render a new benchmark for Tb³⁺ -based single-molecule magnets.

Slowing magnetic relaxation with open-shell diluents

Strategies for slowing magnetic relaxation via local environmental design are vital for developing next-generation spin-based technologies (e.g., quantum information processing). Herein, we demonstrate a technique to do so via chemical design of a local magnetic environment. We show that embedding the open-shell complex (Ph₄P)₂[Co(SPh)₄] in solid-state matrices of the isostructural, open-shell species (Ph₄P)₂[M(SPh)₄] (M = Ni²⁺, S = 1; M = Fe²⁺, S = 2; M = Mn²⁺, S = 5 2 ) will slow magnetic relaxation for the embedded [Co(SPh)₄]^2- ion by three orders of magnitude. Magnetometry, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and computational analyses reveal that integer spin and large, positive zero-field splitting (D) values for the diluent produce a quiet, local magnetic field that slows relaxation rates for the embedded Co molecules. These results will enable the investigation of magnetic systems for which strictly diamagnetic congeners are either synthetically inaccessible or are not isostructural.

Four mononuclear dysprosium complexes with neutral Schiff-base ligands: syntheses, crystal structures and slow magnetic relaxation behavior

Four mononuclear 9-coordinate Dy-based complexes, [Dy(HL¹)₂(NO₃)₃(CH₃OH)] (1Dy), [Dy(HL²)₂(NO₃)₃(H₂O)] (2Dy), [Dy(HL³)₃(NO₃)₃]·CH₃CN (3Dy), and [Dy(HL⁴)₃(NO₃)₃] (4Dy), have been constructed by neutral Schiff-base ligands (1-[N-(4-R)aminomethylidene-2(1H)-naphthalenone, R = -Cl (HL¹), -NO₂ (HL²), -OCH₃ (HL³), -I (HL⁴)). By tuning the terminal substituent group of HL ligands, the number of HL ligands coordinated to the central Dy³⁺ ion unexpectedly varies from 2 to 3, and the local symmetry around the Dy³⁺ ion reduces from D_3h to C_s. Magnetic measurements reveal that 2Dy can display single-ion magnet (SIM) behavior in zero dc field, while 1Dy, 3Dy and 4Dy show field-induced slow magnetic relaxation. Ab initio calculations were employed to elucidate magnetic anisotropy in the complexes, including g-tensors, averaged transition magnetic moments and magnetic easy axes. The difference in magnetic behaviors of the four complexes can be ascribed to the terminal substituent effect of neutral Schiff-base ligands.

Effect of the Transition Metal Ions on the Single-Molecule Magnet Properties in a Family of Air-Stable 3d-4f Ion-Pair Compounds with Pentagonal Bipyramidal Ln(III) Ions

Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) are expected to be promising candidates for the applications of high-density information storage materials and quantum information processing. Lanthanide SMMs have attracted considerable interest in recent years due to their excellent performance. It has always been interesting but not straightforward to study the relaxation and blocking mechanisms by embedding 3d ions into 4f SMMs. Here we report a family of air-stable 3d-4f ion-pair compounds, YFe (1), DyCr (2), DyFe (3), DyCo (4), and Dy_0.04Y_0.96Fe (5), composed of pentagonal bipyramidal (D_5h) Ln^III cations and transition metallocyanate anions. The ion-pair nature makes the dipole-dipole interactions almost the only component of the magnetic interactions that can be clarified and analytically resolved under proper approximation. Therefore, this family provides an intuitive opportunity to investigate the effects of 3d-4f and 4f-4f magnetic interactions on the behavior of site-resolved 4f SMMs. Dynamic magnetic measurements of 1 under a 4 kOe external field reveal slow magnetic relaxation originating from the isolated [Fe^III]_LS (S = ¹/₂) ions. Under zero dc field, compounds 2-5 show similar magnetic relaxation processes coming from the separated pentagonal bipyramidal (D_5h) Dy^III ions with high Orbach barriers of 592(5), 596(4), 595(3), and 606(4) K, respectively. Comparatively, both compounds 3 and 5 exhibit two distinct relaxation processes, respectively from the [Fe^III]_LS and Dy^III [U_eff = 596(4) K for 3 and 610(7) K for 5] ions, under a 4 kOe dc field. The dipolar interactions between the neighboring TM^III (TM = transition metal, Cr^III or [Fe^III]_LS) and Dy^III ions were revealed to have little effect on the thermal relaxation in compounds 2, 3, and 5, or the coexistence of the two separate relaxation processes in compounds 3 and 5 under a 4 kOe dc field, but they significantly affect the quantum tunneling of magnetization and the magnetic hysteresis behavior of 2 and 3 at low temperatures compared to those of 4.

Blocking like it's hot: a synthetic chemists' path to high-temperature lanthanide single molecule magnets

Progress in the synthesis, design, and characterisation of single-molecule magnets (SMMs) has expanded dramatically from curiosity driven beginnings to molecules that retain magnetization above the boiling point of liquid nitrogen. This is in no small part due to the increasingly collaborative nature of this research where synthetic targets are guided by theoretical design criteria. This article aims to summarize these efforts and progress from the perspective of a synthetic chemist with a focus on how chemistry can modulate physical properties. A simple overview is presented of lanthanide electronic structure in order to contextualize the synthetic advances that have led to drastic improvements in the performance of lanthanide-based SMMs from the early 2000s to the late 2010s.

Incorporating Trigonal-Prismatic Cobalt(II) Blocks into an Exchange-Coupled [Co2Cu] System

Taking advantage of a rigid tetradentate ligand of bis(pyrazoly)(3-pyrazolypyridinyl)methane (PyPz₃) and the [Cu^II(opba)]^2- unit [opba^4- = o-phenylenebis(oxamato)], the trinuclear complex [{Co^II(PyPz₃)}₂Cu^II(opba)][ClO₄]₂·5MeCN·MeOH (1) was constructed, in which the Co^II centers adopt a trigonal-prismatic geometry, while considerable intramolecular magnetic coupling was successfully introduced through the oxamido bridges, representing another very first example of single-molecule magnets marrying both selected coordination geometry and magnetic exchanges.

Trends in trigonal prismatic Ln-[1]ferrocenophane complexes and discovery of a Ho3+ single-molecule magnet

Lanthanide metallocenophanes are an intriguing class of organometallic complexes that feature rare six-coordinate trigonal prismatic coordination environments of 4f elements with close intramolecular proximity to transition metal ions. Herein, we present a systematic study of the structural and magnetic properties of the ferrocenophanes, [LnFc₃(THF)₂Li₂]⁻, of the late trivalent lanthanide ions (Ln = Gd (1), Ho (2), Er (3), Tm (4), Yb (5), Lu (6)). One major structural trend within this class of complexes is the increasing diferrocenyl (Fc²⁻) average twist angle with decreasing ionic radius (r_ion) of the central Ln ion, resulting in the largest average Fc²⁻ twist angles for the Lu³⁺ compound 6. Such high sensitivity of the twist angle to changes in r_ion is unique to the here presented ferrocenophane complexes and likely due to the large trigonal plane separation enforced by the ligand (>3.2 Å). This geometry also allows the non-Kramers ion Ho³⁺ to exhibit slow magnetic relaxation in the absence of applied dc fields, rendering compound 2 a rare example of a Ho-based single-molecule magnet (SMM) with barriers to magnetization reversal (U) of 110–131 cm⁻¹. In contrast, compounds featuring Ln ions with prolate electron density (3–5) don't show slow magnetization dynamics under the same conditions. The observed trends in magnetic properties of 2–5 are supported by state-of-the-art ab initio calculations. Finally, the magneto-structural relationship of the trigonal prismatic Ho-[1]ferrocenophane motif was further investigated by axial ligand (THF in 2) exchange to yield [HoFc₃(THF*)₂Li₂]⁻ (2-THF*) and [HoFc₃(py)₂Li₂]⁻ (2-py) motifs. We find that larger average Fc²⁻ twist angles (in 2-THF* and 2-py as compared to in 2) result in faster magnetic relaxation times at a given temperature.

Tuning the magnetization dynamics of TbIII-based single-chain magnets through substitution on the nitronyl nitroxide radical

Two one-dimensional nitronyl nitroxide radical (NITR)-bridged lanthanide chain compounds, namely [Tb(hfac)₃(NIT-4-ThienPh)]_n (1) and [Tb(hfac)₃(NIT-5-ThienPh)]_n (2), where hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate, NIT-4-ThienPh = 2-(4'-phenyl-2'-thienyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-imidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide, and NIT-5-ThienPh = 2-(5'-phenyl-2'-thienyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-imidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide, were obtained with different NITRs. Alternating-current magnetic susceptibility studies show that both the compounds are single-chain magnets, while a minor change of the site of the phenyl substituent on the NITR significantly influences the magnetization dynamics. The effective magnetization reversal barrier of 1 (53 cm^-1) is more than two times higher than that of 2 (20 cm^-1) and the coercive field of 1 is also much higher than that of 2 because of minor changes in the local coordination symmetry of the Tb^III centers and the magnetic interactions between the spin carriers along the chain induced by substitution on the radical ligand.

Main Group Chemistry at the Interface with Molecular Magnetism

Innovative synthetic coordination and, increasingly, organometallic chemistry are at the heart of advances in molecular magnetism. Smart ligand design is essential for implementing controlled modifications to the electronic structure and magnetic properties of transition metal and f-element compounds, and many important recent developments use nontraditional ligands based on low-coordinate main group elements to drive the field forward. This review charts progress in molecular magnetism from the perspective of ligands in which the donor atoms range from low-coordinate 2p elements-particularly carbon but also boron and nitrogen-to the heavier p-block elements such as phosphorus, arsenic, antimony, and even bismuth. Emphasis is placed on the role played by novel main group ligands in addressing magnetic anisotropy of transition metal and f-element compounds, which underpins the development of single-molecule magnets (SMMs), a family of magnetic materials that can retain magnetization in the absence of a magnetic field below a blocking temperature. Nontraditional p-block donor atoms, with their relatively diffuse valence orbitals and more diverse bonding characteristics, also introduce scope for tuning the spin-orbit coupling properties and metal-ligand covalency in molecular magnets, which has implications in areas such as magnetic exchange coupling and spin crossover phenomena. The chemistry encompasses transition metals, lanthanides, and actinides and describes recently discovered molecular magnets that can be regarded, currently, as defining the state of the art. This review identifies that main group chemistry at the interface molecular magnetism is an area with huge potential to deliver new types of molecular magnets with previously unseen properties and applications.

Modulation of the directions of the anisotropic axes of DyIII ions through utilizing two kinds of organic ligands or replacing DyIII ions by FeIII ions

Two complexes based on Dy₄ or Fe₂Dy₂ tetrahedral unit have been obtained by employing mixed organic ligands. The directions of the easy magnetization for the Dy^III in both complexes were successfully modulated.

A series of new octanuclear Ln8 clusters: magnetic studies reveal a significant cryogenic magnetocaloric effect and slow magnetic relaxation

A series of new octanuclear Ln₈ clusters. Magnetically, Gd₈ exhibited a significant magnetocaloric effect and a magnetic entropy change is 32.49 J K⁻¹ kg⁻¹ for a field of 7 T at 2 K, while Dy₈ exhibited a frequency dependent slow relaxation of magnetization at a zero applied direct current magnetic field.

High local coordination symmetry around the spin center and the alignment between magnetic and symmetric axes together play a crucial role in single-molecule magnet performance

A tetradentate 8-hydroxyquinoline-based acyl hydrazine ligand was used to construct a series of mono/di-nuclear dysprosium single-molecule magnets (SMMs) with nearly ideal pentagonal bipyramid coordination geometry (D_5h).

High-temperature magnetic blocking and magneto-structural correlations in a series of dysprosium(iii) metallocenium single-molecule magnets

A series of dysprosium(iii) metallocenium salts, [Dy(CpiPr4R)2][B(C6F5)4] (R = H (1), Me (2), Et (3), iPr (4)), was synthesized by reaction of DyI3 with the corresponding known NaCpiPr4R (R = H, iPr) and novel NaCpiPr4R (R = Me, Et) salts at high temperature, followed by iodide abstraction with [H(SiEt3)2][B(C6F5)4]. Variation of the substituents in this series results in substantial changes in molecular structure, with more sterically-encumbering cyclopentadienyl ligands promoting longer Dy-C distances and larger Cp-Dy-Cp angles. Dc and ac magnetic susceptibility data reveal that these structural changes have a considerable impact on the magnetic relaxation behavior and operating temperature of each compound. In particular, the magnetic relaxation barrier increases as the Dy-C distance decreases and the Cp-Dy-Cp angle increases. An overall 45 K increase in the magnetic blocking temperature is observed across the series, with compounds 2-4 exhibiting the highest 100 s blocking temperatures yet reported for a single-molecule magnet. Compound 2 possesses the highest operating temperature of the series with a 100 s blocking temperature of 62 K. Concomitant increases in the effective relaxation barrier and the maximum magnetic hysteresis temperature are observed, with 2 displaying a barrier of 1468 cm-1 and open magnetic hysteresis as high as 72 K at a sweep rate of 3.1 mT s-1. Magneto-structural correlations are discussed with the goal of guiding the synthesis of future high operating temperature DyIII metallocenium single-molecule magnets.

Modulation of the Coordination Environment around the Magnetic Easy Axis Leads to Significant Magnetic Relaxations in a Series of 3d-4f Schiff Complexes

A series of Salen-type Zn(II)-Dy(III) complexes [L¹Zn(II)ClDy(III)(acac)₂]·H₂O (1), [L¹Zn(II)BrDy(III)(acac)₂]·H₂O (2), [L¹Zn(II)(H₂O)Dy(III)(acac)₂]·CH₂Cl₂·PF₆ (3), [L²Zn(II)(H₂O)Dy(III)(acac)₂]·PF₆ (4), and Co(III)-Dy(III) complexes [L¹Co(III)Br₂Dy(III)(acac)₂]·CH₂Cl₂ (5), [L²Co(III)Cl₂Dy(III)(acac)Cl(MeO)] (6), [L²Co(III)Cl₂Dy(III)(acac)Cl(H₂O)] (7), and [L²Co(III)Cl₂Dy(III)(NO₃)₂(MeO)] (8) heterobinuclear single-molecule magnets (SMMs) were synthesized and magnetically characterized. These complexes were constructed by incorporating diamagnetic Zn(II) and Co(III) ions with acetylacetone (acac) and compartmental Schiff-base ligands (H₂L¹ = N, N'-bis(2-oxy-3-methoxybenzylidene)-1,2-phenylenediamine; H₂L² = N, N'-bis(2-oxy-3-methoxybenzylidene)-1,2-diaminocyclohexane). In the Zn(II)-Dy(III) (1-4) system, the coordination environments of the Dy(III) ions are nearly identical, but the apical coordination atom to the Zn(II) ion is different. Complexes 1, 2, and 4 displayed no magnetic relaxation in the absence of external magnetic field, but complex 3 displayed more pronounced SMM behavior with a relaxation energy barrier U_eff/ k_B 38 K and magnetic hysteresis at 1.8 K. The SMM performances of 5, 6, and 7 were enhanced significantly by incorporating an octahedral Co(III) instead of square-pyramidal Zn(II) and replacing one of acac^- group around Dy(III) ion by a neutral O atom, displaying U_eff of 167, 118, and 75 K as well as magnetic hysteresis up to 3.5 K. These studies indicated that the remote diamagnetic Zn(II) and Co(III) ions played a key role, and the SMM properties were very strongly related to the special coordination atoms configuration around Dy(III) ion. When this coordination configuration around was broken as 8 exhibited, however, it resulted in a dramatically decreased SMM performance. From this work, the key factors that significantly affect the SMM performance of these heteronuclear Zn(II)/Co(III)-Dy(III) SMMs are unambiguously presented.

Targeted replacement: systematic studies of dodecanuclear {MLn} coordination clusters (M = Cr, Co; Ln = Dy, Y)

Three dodecanuclear 3d-4f coordination clusters, [CrIII6LnIII6(μ3-OH)8(tbdea)6(C6H5COO)16]·2H2O (Ln = Dy (1), Y (2)) and [CoIII6DyIII6(μ3-OH)8(nbdea)6(m-CH3C6H4COO)16]·2H2O·2CH3CN (3), have been synthesized under solvothermal conditions and characterized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that all three compounds possess an analogous {MIII6LnIII6} core (M = Cr, Co; Ln = Dy, Y) and dc magnetic susceptibility studies indicated that the magnetic exchange couplings between DyIII ions are dominant antiferromagnetic, while the CrIII-DyIII interactions are weakly ferromagnetic. Furthermore, the ac magnetic susceptibility measurements showed that both CrIII6DyIII6 compound 1 and CoIIi6DyIII6 compound 3 containing highly anisotropic DyIII ions displayed single-molecule magnetic (SMM) behavior with the energy barrier Ueff increasing from 12.8 K (for 1) to 20.8 K (for 3), indicating that weak 3d-4f exchange couplings enhance the QTM and reduce the energy barrier.

Single Ion Magnets from 3d to 5f: Developments and Strategies

Single-ion magnets (SIMs), exhibiting slow magnetization relaxation in the absence of the magnetic field, originate from their single spin-carrier centre. In pursuit of high-performance magnetic properties, such as high spin-reversal barrier and high blocking temperature, various metal centres were investigated to establish SIMs, including 3d and 5d transition metal ions, 4f lanthanide ions, and 5f actinide ions, which possess unique zero-field splitting and magnetic properties. Therefore, proper ligand field is of great importance to different types of metals. In the given great breakthroughs since the first SIM, [Pc₂ Tb]^- (Pc=dianion of phthalocyanine), was reported, strategies of ligand field design have emerged. In this review, the developments of SIMs with different metal centres are summarized, as well as the possible strategies.

Activation of C-H bonds by rare-earth metallocene-butyl complexes

The stable metallocene-butyl complexes [(Cp^Me)₂M(ⁿBu)]₂ (M = Y, Dy) were synthesized and their reactivity towards to ferrocene and bulky N-heterocyclic carbenes investigated. Selective mono-deprotonation of ferrocene and a benzylic methyl group of IMes were observed, whereas a control reaction of (Cp^Me)₃M with IMes resulted in a normal-to-abnormal NHC rearrangement.

Influence of alcoholic solvent and acetate anion coordination mode variations on structures and magnetic properties of heterometallic Zn2Dy2 tetranuclear clusters

We clarify that slight modifications of the synthetic conditions generate two Zn₂Dy₂ clusters with acetate anion coordination mode variation and different magnetic behaviors.

Chiral six-coordinate Dy(iii) and Tb(iii) complexes of an achiral ligand: structure, fluorescence, and magnetism

Two new chiral six-coordinate lanthanide complexes are obtained using an achiral ligand. Complex [Zn₃Dy] displays field-induced slow magnetization relaxation, while complex [Zn₃Tb] exhibits intense green photofluorescence and triboluminescence.
