Phase Change Transformations with Dynamically Addressable Aminal Metallogels

A General Group-Protection Synthesis Strategy to Fabricate Covalent Organic Framework Gels

Fabricating insoluble and infusible porous materials into gels for advanced applications is of great importance but has formidable challenges. Here, we present a general, facile, and scalable protocol to fabricate covalent organic framework (COF) gels using a group-protection synthesis strategy. To prove the generality of this strategy, we successfully prepared 10 types of COF organohydrogels with high crystallinity, porosity, good mechanical properties, and excellent solvent and freezing resistance. Notably, these COF organohydrogels can easily transform into hydrogels, organogels, and aerogels, breaking the gaps between different types of COF gels. An in-depth mechanism investigation unveils that the group-protection strategy effectively slows down the formation rate and regulates the morphology of COFs, benefiting the formation of cross-linked nanofibers/nanosheets to produce COF gels. We also find that the hydrogen bond network formed by the organic/water binary solvent and functional groups in the COF skeletons plays a vital role in creating organohydrogels and maintaining frost resistance and solvent resistance. As an application demonstration, COF gels installed with photoresponsive azobenzene groups show excellent solar energy absorption, photothermal conversion, and water transmission performances, demonstrating great potential in solar desalination. This work enriches the synthesis toolboxes for COF gels and expands the application scope of COFs.

Recent advances in soft functional materials: preparation, functions and applications

Synthetic materials and biomaterials with elastic moduli lower than 10 MPa are generally considered as soft materials. Research studies on soft materials have been boosted due to their intriguing features such as light-weight, low modulus, stretchability, and a diverse range of functions including sensing, actuating, insulating and transporting. They are ideal materials for applications in smart textiles, flexible devices and wearable electronics. On the other hand, benefiting from the advances in materials science and chemistry, novel soft materials with tailored properties and functions could be prepared to fulfil the specific requirements. In this review, the current progress of soft materials, ranging from materials design, preparation and application are critically summarized based on three categories, namely gels, foams and elastomers. The chemical, physical and electrical properties and the applications are elaborated. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of soft materials to researchers in different disciplines.

Coordination Dynamics and Thermal Stability with Aminal Metallogels and Liquids

In this article, we review a dynamic covalent gel system developed as a high temperature well construction fluid. The key gel/fluid phase changes and related materials properties are addressable via the constitutional and coordination dynamics of the equilibrium and non-equilibrium molecular species comprising the material. The interplay between these species and external stimuli leads to material adaptability. Specifically, the introduction of metal ions into a non-equilibrium hemiaminal gel reverts this phase into a non-equilibrium liquid. When heated, this liquid transforms itself catalytically into the thermodynamically favoured closed-ring polyhexahydrotriazine (PHT) gel product. The temperature stability of different PHT gel formulations is evaluated as a function of the inclusion of various salts. It is possible to revert this thermodynamic PHT gel back into a liquid. This pH dependent transformation depends on the R groups linking the hexahydrotriazines (HTs) to one another. While polyethylene glycol (PEG) based PHT gels revert to liquids with water and mild protonation conditions, in comparison, polypropylene glycol (PPG) based gels require stronger acid conditions with heat, or a different more nucleophilically driven ring-opening mechanism by, for example, phosphines. The covalent dynamic chemistry in this chemical system gives way to many possible applications in addition to the high temperature solution-gelation (sol-gels) for which it has been primarily designed.

Acylhydrazone functionalized benzimidazole-based metallogel for the efficient detection and separation of Cr3

Chromium(iii) is a kind of microelement and can be converted to the more toxic chromium(vi), which is a carcinogen, by redox cycling. Thus, the development of novel materials for the detection and removal of Cr³⁺ is a very important issue. A novel metallogel chemosensor (BMG-Fe) based on functionalized benzimidazole (BM) and Fe³⁺ was constructed, which could fluorescently detect and separate Cr³⁺. The detection limit of BMG-Fe for Cr³⁺ is 2.62 × 10^-8 M, and it exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity for Cr³⁺. Meanwhile, the absorbing percentage of BMG-Fe for Cr³⁺ is 96.36%, indicating a high separation rate. Interestingly, the sensitivity and ingestion capacity of BMG-Fe for Cr³⁺ are better than that of the simple organogel (BMG). So, the metallogel BMG-Fe could be utilized for the efficient removal of heavy metal ions from waste water.
