Abstract
The development of novel near-infrared (NIR) materials with extremely small energy gaps and high stability is highly desirable in bioimaging and phototherapy. Here we report an effective strategy for narrowing the energy gaps of porphyrins by synergistic regulation of meso/β substituents. The novel NIR absorbing/emitting meso-alkynyl naphthoporphyrins (Zn-TNP and Pt-TNP) are synthesized via the retro-Diels-Alder reaction. X-ray crystallography analysis confirms the highly distorted structures of the complexes. Both compounds exhibit intense Q bands around 800 nm, while Zn-TNP shows deep NIR fluorescence at 847 nm. Pt-TNP displays NIR-II room temperature phosphorescence peaking at 1106 nm with an extremely large Stokes shift of 314 nm, which are the longest wavelengths observed among the reported platinum porphyrinoids. Furthermore, Pt-TNP shows remarkable photostability and a notable capacity for synchronous singlet oxygen and heat generation under NIR light irradiation, demonstrating potential in combined photodynamic/photothermal therapy. A theoretical analysis reveals the progressive lifting of the HOMO by the β-fused benzene ring, the decrease of the LUMO upon meso-alkynyl substitution, and energy-releasing pathways varying with metal ions. This dual regulation approach demonstrates great promise in designing innovative multifunctional NIR porphyrin materials.

Abstract
Carbaporphyrin dimers, investigated for their distinctive electronic structures and exceptional properties, have predominantly consisted of systems containing identical subunits. This study addresses the associated knowledge gap by focusing on asymmetric carbaporphyrin dimers with Janus-like characteristics. The synthesis of a Janus-type carbaporphyrin pseudo-dimer 5 is presented. It displays antiaromatic characteristics on the fused side and nonaromatic behavior on the unfused side. A newly synthesized tetraphenylene (TPE) linked bis-dibenzihomoporphyrin 8 and a previously reported dibenzo[g,p]chrysene (DBC) linked bis-dicarbacorrole 9 were prepared as controls. Comprehensive analyses, including 1H NMR spectral studies, single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, and DFT calculations, validate the mixed character of 5. A further feature of the Janus pseudo-dimer 5 is that it may be transformed into a heterometallic complex, with one side coordinating a Cu(III) center and the other stabilizing a BODIPY complex. This disparate regiochemical reactivity underscores the potential of carbaporphyrin dimers as versatile frameworks, with electronic features and site-specific coordination chemistry controlled through asymmetry. These findings position carbaporphyrin dimers as promising candidates for advances in electronic structure studies, coordination chemistry, materials science, and beyond.

Abstract
The meso-unsubstituted expanded porphyrinoid 3, incorporating two carbazole moieties, acts as an effective ligand for Co(ii) and permits the isolation and X-ray diffraction-based characterization of a 6 : 3 metal-to-ligand metallocage complex that converts spontaneously to the constituent 2 : 1 metal-to-ligand metalloring species in chloroform solution. The discrete metalloring is formed directly when the Co(ii) complex is crystallized from supersaturated solutions, whereas crystallization from more dilute solutions favors the metallocage. Studies with two other test cations, Pd(ii) and Zn(ii), revealed exclusive formation of the monomeric metalloring complexes with no evidence of higher order species being formed. Structural, electrochemical and UV-vis-NIR absorption spectral studies provide support for the conclusion that the Pd(ii) complex is less distorted and more effectively conjugated than its Co(ii) and Zn(ii) congeners, an inference further supported by TD-DFT calculations. The findings reported here underscore how expanded porphyrins can support coordination modes, including bimetallic complexes and self-assembled cage structures, that are not necessarily easy to access using more traditional ligand systems. Carbazole containing expanded carbaporphyrinoid ligand supports the formation of 2 : 1 metal-to-ligand complexes with Pd, Co, and Zn. Solid-state studies also revealed formation of a 6 : 3 metal-to-ligand metallocage in the case of Co complexation.![]()

Abstract
In organometallic complexes containing π-conjugated macrocyclic chelate ligands, conformational change significantly affects metal-ligand electronic interactions, hence tuning properties of the complexes. In this regard, we investigated the metal-ligand interactions in hexaphyrin mono-Pd(II) complexes Pd[28]M and Pd[26]H, which exhibit a redox-induced switching of Hückel-Möbius aromaticity and subsequent molecular conformation, and their effect on the electronic structure and photophysical behaviors. In Möbius aromatic Pd[28]M, the weak metal-ligand interaction leads to the π electronic structure of the hexaphyrin ligand remaining almost intact, which undergoes efficient intersystem crossing (ISC) assisted by the heavy-atom effect of the Pd metal. In Hückel aromatic Pd[26]H, the significant metal-ligand interaction results in ligand-to-metal charge-transfer (LMCT) in the excited-state dynamics. These contrasting metal-ligand electronic interactions have been revealed by time-resolved electronic and vibrational spectroscopies and time-dependent DFT calculations. This work indicates that the conspicuous modulation of metal-ligand interaction by Hückel-Möbius aromaticity switching is an appealing approach to manipulate molecular properties of metal complexes, further enabling the fine-tuning of metal-ligand interactions and the novel design of functional organometallic materials.

Abstract
Derived from a Pd-catalyzed oxidative C-H/C-H coupling reaction, two giant imidazole-based [60]tetradecaphyrins adopting stable figure-eight geometry together with one [30]heptaphyrin are obtained by [5 + 2] MacDonald condensations in one pot. The directional imidazole is believed to play a vital role for the diverse cyclization and conformation stabilization.

Abstract
A series of PtII-based monometallic (H2PtL), homobimetallic (Pt2L), and heterobimetallic (NiPtL and PdPtL) group 10 complexes of the previously established expanded twin porphyrin (H4L) were prepared. Structural characterization of the bimetallic PtII series (Pt2L, NiPtL, and PdPtL) revealed their similar general structures, with slight differences correlated to the ion size. An improvement of the metal-ion insertion process also allowed efficient preparation of the known Pd2L complex, and the novel heterobimetallic NiPdL complex was also structurally characterized. UV-vis spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, magnetic circular dichroism (MCD), and (spectro)electrochemistry were used to characterize the complexes; the electronic properties followed largely established lines for metal complexes of the twin porphyrin, except that the PtII-based systems exhibited more complex UV-vis spectral signatures. MCD spectra accompanied by density functional theory (DFT)/time-dependent DFT computations (TDDFT) rationalize the origins of the optical features of the twin porphyrin. The presence of the nonplanar, nonaromatic macrocyclic π system with conjugation pathways confined to each half of the molecule could be visualized. Significant pyrazole(π) → pyrrole(π*) charge-transfer character was predicted for several transitions in the visible region. This study adds to our fundamental understanding of the formation, structure, and electronic structure of bimetallic complexes of this class of expanded metalloporphyrins containing nonpyrrolic moieties.

Abstract
Proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) is an important chemical and biological phenomenon. It is attractive as an on-off switching mechanism for redox-active synthetic systems but has not been extensively exploited for this purpose. Here we report a core-modified planar weakly antiaromatic/nonaromatic octaphyrin, namely, a [32]octaphyrin(1.0.1.0.1.0.1.0) (1) derived from rigid naphthobipyrrole and dithienothiophene (DTT) precursors, that undergoes proton-coupled two-electron reduction to produce its aromatic congener in the presence of HCl and other hydrogen halides. Evidence for the production of a [4 n + 1] π-electron intermediate radical state is seen in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid. Electrochemical analyses provide support for the notion that protonation causes a dramatic anodic shift in the reduction potentials of octaphyrin 1, thereby facilitating electron transfer from halide anions (viz. I-, Br-, and, Cl-). Electron-rich molecules, such as tetrathiafulvene (TTF), phenothiazine (PTZ), and catechol, were also found to induce PCET in the case of 1. Both the oxidized and two-electron reduced forms of 1 were characterized by X-ray diffraction analyses in the solid state and in solution via spectroscopic means.

Abstract
Functionalized N-unsubstituted 2,2'-bipyrroles are basic building blocks for the preparation of pyrrolic macrocycles and natural products, such as prodigiosines. The aim of this review is to provide a description of the most important methodologies used to prepare 2,2'-bipyrroles and their central role as building blocks for the synthesis of porphyrinoids and property-defining structural elements therein.
