A Boradiselenirane and a Boraditellurirane: Isolable Heavy Analogs of Dioxiranes and Dithiiranes

Derivatization of an Alkylideneborane with B═C Bond Cleavage

We present the synthesis, structural characterization, and reactivity of alkylideneborane 2, supported by π-donating N-heterocyclic imino and σ-donating N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands. The incorporation of these ligands effectively weakens the B═C bond strength, leading to enhanced reactivity. Consequently, selective cleavage of the B═C bond can be achieved using pyridine-N-oxide, sulfur, and selenium, resulting in the formation of 1,3-dioxa-2,4-diboretane 3, thioxoborane 4, and selenoborane 5, respectively. Furthermore, intriguing B═C bond insertions with CO2 and CS2 are observed, affording zwitterionic borenium/fluorenide 6 and dithiaboretane 7. The former species 6 is readily converted to transient oxoborane and imidazolium enolate, showcasing the bora-Wittig reaction of alkylideneborane. This investigation highlights the potential of alkylideneborane as a versatile building block for synthesizing novel organoboron compounds through unconventional transformations.

Three-Membered Aluminacycles

Three-membered-ring scaffolds of carbocycles, namely, cyclopropanes and cyclopropenes, are ubiquitous in natural products and pharmaceutical molecules. These molecules exhibit a peculiar reactivity, and their applications as synthetic intermediates and versatile building blocks in organic synthesis have been extensively studied over the past century. The incorporation of heteroatoms into three-membered cyclic structures has attracted significant attention, reflecting fundamental differences in their electronic/geometric structures and reactivities compared to their carbon congeners and their associated potential for exploitation in applications. Recently, the chemistry of low-valent aluminum species, alumylenes, dialumenes, and aluminyl anions, has dramatically developed, which has allowed access to hitherto unprecedented aluminacycles. This Perspective focuses upon advances in the chemistry of three-membered aluminacycles, including their synthetic protocols, spectroscopic and structural properties, and reactivity toward various substrates and small molecules.

C-C and C-N Bond Activation, Lewis-Base Coordination and One- and Two-Electron Oxidation at a Linear Aminoborylene

A cyclic alkyl(amino)carbene (CAAC)-stabilized dicoordinate aminoborylene is synthesized by the twofold reduction of a [(CAAC)BCl₂ (TMP)] (TMP=2,6-tetramethylpiperidyl) precursor. NMR-spectroscopic, X-ray crystallographic and computational analyses confirm the cumulenic nature of the central C=B=N moiety. Irradiation of [(CAAC)B(TMP)] (2) resulted in an intramolecular C-C bond activation, leading to a doubly-fused C₁₀ BN heterocycle, while the reaction with acetonitrile resulted in an aryl migration from the CAAC to the acetonitrile nitrogen atom, concomitant with tautomerization of the latter to a boron-bound allylamino ligand. One-electron oxidation of 2 with CuX (X=Cl, Br) afforded the corresponding amino(halo)boryl radicals, which were characterized by EPR spectroscopy and DFT calculations. Placing 2 under an atmosphere of CO afforded the tricoordinate (CAAC,CO)-stabilized aminoborylene. Finally, the twofold oxidation of 2 with chalcogens led, in the case of N₂ O and sulfur, to the splitting of the B-C_CAAC bond and formation of the 2,4-diamino-1,3,2,4-dichalcogenadiboretanes and CAAC-chalcogen adducts, whereas with selenium a monomeric boraselenone was isolated, which showed some degree of B-Se multiple bonding.

Base-Stabilized Neutral Oxoborane and Thioxoborane Supported by a Bis(oxazolinyl)(phenyl)methanide Ligand

Base-stabilized neutral oxoborane and thioxoborane supported by a bis(oxazolinyl)(phenyl)methanide ligand have been synthesized and structurally characterized. While previous synthetic attempts of oxoborane ligated by β-diketiminate (NacNac) did not allow for its isolation in acid-free form, oxoborane supported by a bis(oxazolinyl)(phenyl)methanide ligand is isolable, due to the absence of imine ɑ-protons and steric protection of enamine carbon. Crystallographic analysis revealed the presence of a B-O double bond close to the shortest end of the reported lengths. Its reactivity has also been examined, and it was majorly governed by the nucleophilicity and basicity of the oxygen atom. The chemical inertness and synthetic convenience of the bis(oxazolinyl)(phenyl)methanide scaffold presented in this work suggest its utility as an innocent alternative to the NacNac scaffold.

N-Phosphinoamidinato Silylene- and Phosphine-Borylborylene Complexes

This work describes a straightforward method to synthesize a borylborylene without proceeding via the rearrangement of a diborene. An amidinato amidosilylene [LSiNMe₂] (L = PhC(NtBu)₂) and PMe₃ were reacted with an N-phosphinoamidinato diborane 1 and KC₈ to form a stable silylene-borylborylene 2 and a persistent phosphine-borylborylene 3, respectively. Compound 2 is stable as the borylene center is well stabilized by the silylene donor and boryl substituent, whereas compound 3 is unstable in solution due to labile PMe₃. The latter was illustrated by reacting compound 3 with Ar'NC (Ar' = 2,6-Me₂C₆H₃), where Ar'NC displaced PMe₃ and inserted into the N-phosphinoamidinate ligand and B-B bond to form compound 4.

Icosahedral m-Carboranes Containing Exopolyhedral B-Se and B-Te Bonds

Chalcogen-containing carboranes have been known for several decades and possess stable exopolyhedral B(9)-Se and B(9)-Te σ bonds despite the electron-donating ability of the B(9) vertex. While these molecules are known, little has been done to thoroughly evaluate their electrophilic and nucleophilic behavior. Herein, we report an assessment of the electrophilic reactivity of m-carboranylselenyl(II), -tellurenyl(II), and -tellurenyl(IV) chlorides and establish their reactivity pattern with Grignard reagents, alkenes, alkynes, enolates, and electron-rich arenes. These electrophilic reactions afford unique electron-rich B-Y-C (Y = Se, Te) bonding motifs not commonly found before. Furthermore, we show that m-carboranylselenolate, and even m-carboranyltellurolate, can be competent nucleophiles and participate in nucleophilic aromatic substitution reactions. Arene substitution chemistry is shown to be further extended to electron-rich species via palladium-mediated cross-coupling chemistry.

Reactions of 9-Carbene-9-Borafluorene Monoanion and Selenium: Synthesis of Boryl-Substituted Selenides and Diselenides

Reactions of 9-carbene-9-borafluorene monoanion (1) with elemental selenium and selenium-containing reagents are reported. When compound 1 is reacted with grey selenium in THF, various boryl-substituted selenides and diselenides are produced (2-6), including molecules resulting from migration of the carbene ligand Dipp group (Dipp = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl). However, when a similar reaction between 1 and grey selenium is performed in toluene in the presence of 18-crown-6, boryl-substituted selenide 7 is obtained as the sole boron-containing product. As compound 7 is the monomeric variant of organoselenide 3, 18-crown-6 promotes both product selectivity and solubility in a nonpolar solvent. Diselenide 5, which features a trans-bent B-Se-Se-B core, was directly isolated via reaction of 1 with Se₂Cl₂ in THF. Computational modeling suggests that the formation of 5 proceeds via a radical mechanism. This was supported by an experiment demonstrating that the CAAC-borafluorene radical also reacts with SeCl₂ to yield 5 [CAAC = (2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-4,4-diethyl-2,2-dimethyl-pyrrolidin-5-ylidene]. Energy decomposition analysis of 5 indicates a covalent borafluorene-diselenide bond (ΔE_int, -168.9 kcal mol^-1). All of the new compounds were fully characterized via single-crystal X-ray diffraction and multinuclear nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H, ¹³C, ¹¹B, and ⁷⁷Se).

Superseding β-Diketiminato Ligands: An Amido Imidazoline-2-Imine Ligand Stabilizes the Exhaustive Series of B=X Boranes (X=O, S, Se, Te)

Boron reluctantly forms B=X (X=O, S, Se, Te) moieties, which has stimulated the quest for such species in the past few years. Based on the N,N'-chelating β-diketiminato ligand (HNacNac), a new amido imidazoline-2-imine ligand system (HAmIm) is presented, giving rise to the isolation of an exhaustive series of Lewis acid free, monomeric chalcogen B=X boranes with documented π-bond character between boron and the chalcogen. The chalcogenoboranes are isoelectronic and isolobal to the respective ketones. The chemical behavior of the oxoborane (B=O) strongly resembles the classical carbonyl reactivity in C=O bonds. The improved stability provided by HAmIm arises from the formation of more-stable five-membered boron chelates versus the six-membered NacNac analogues and from the imidazoline-2-imine moiety providing enhanced σ- and π-donation. The HAmIm ligand class may supersede the widely employed NacNac system in certain applications.

A BH Borenium-Derived Thioxoborane, Its Persulfide, and Their Li+-Induced Reactions with Alkynes and with Carbon Dioxide

Insertion of sulfur into the B-H bond of the BH borenium salt [IMes(C₆F₅)BH]⁺ followed by deprotonation gave the thioxoborane IMes(C₆F₅)B═S. Subsequent treatment with additional sulfur gave the corresponding boron persulfide, a NHC-stabilized boradithiirane. The B═S compound reacted with carbon dioxide in the presence of the lithium salt Li[B(C₆F₅)₄] by formal [2+2] cycloaddition to give a boron thiocarbonate-type product. The boron persulfide formally inserted phenyl acetylene into the B-S bond in the presence of Li[B(C₆F₅)₄] to give the respective five-membered heterocycle.

An Acid-Free Anionic Oxoborane Isoelectronic with Carbonyl: Facile Access and Transfer of a Terminal B═O Double Bond

We disclose the synthesis and structural characterization of the first acid-free anionic oxoborane, [K(2.2.2-crypt)][(HCDippN)₂BO] (1) (Dipp = 2,6- ⁱPr₂C₆H₃), which is isoelectronic with classical carbonyl compounds. 1 can readily be accessed from its borinic acid by a simple deprotonation/sequestration sequence. Crystallographic and density functional theory (DFT) analyses support the presence of a polarized terminal B═O double bond. Subsequent π bond metathesis converts the B═O bond to a heavier B═S containing system, affording the first anionic thioxoborane [K(2.2.2-crypt)][(HCDippN)₂BS] (2), isoelectronic with thiocarbonyls. Facile B═O bond cleavage can also be achieved to access B-H and B-Cl bonds and, via a remarkable oxide (O^2-) ion abstraction, to generate a borenium cation [(HCDippN)₂B(NC₅H₅)][OTf] (4). By extension, 1 can act as an oxide transfer agent to organic substrates, a synthetic role traditionally associated with transition-metal compounds. Hence we show that B-O linkages, which are often considered to be thermodynamic sinks, can be activated under mild conditions toward bond cleavage and transfer, by exploiting the higher reactivity inherent in the B═O double bond.

Synthesis of unsymmetrical B2E2 and B2E3 heterocycles by borylene insertion into boradichalcogeniranes

We report the selective insertion of a range of borylene fragments into the E-E bonds (E = S, Se, Te) of cyclic boron dichalcogenides. This method provides facile synthetic access to a variety of symmetrical and unsymmetrical four- and five-membered rings.
