Anomalous Halogen–Halogen Interaction Assists Radial Chromophoric Assembly

Light-Induced Antiferromagnetic to Ferromagnetic Transition in Halogen Substituted 1,4-Bis(imidazolyl)benzene Systems: An Effect of Spin-Orbit Coupling and π-Stacking in Enhanced Photomagnetism

Employing the spin-orbit coupling effect by introducing halogen substituents is an excellent strategy to tune the magnetic behavior of organic or metal-organic materials. Light is an alternative tool to modulate the magnetic behavior of a material through a photoinduced electron transfer process, without changing its chemical identity. In this work, three halogen containing 1,4-bis(4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)benzene (F-BDPI, Cl-BDPI and Br-BDPI) systems have been chosen to exploit the role of halogen substituents on solid-state photoinduced phenomena. Through a comprehensive analysis involving various characterization techniques, including UV/vis diffuse reflectance, solid-state photoluminescence, and EPR measurements, it was found that the as-synthesized forms Cl-BDPI-IA and Br-BDPI-IA (IA denotes the hexahydrate form of Cl/Br-BDPI) exhibited fast photochromic response through the generation of photoinduced free radicals in the solid state. Moreover, the SQUID analysis revealed an antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic transition in Cl-BDPI-IA through photoirradiation, which led to an increase in the magnetic moment value up to 38% at room temperature. This signifies the first occurrence of such a significant level of magnetization amplitude compared with previously reported metal-organic photomagnets. This investigation underscores the significance of halogen substitution in tailoring the magnetic properties of organic photomagnets, where strong halogen-π and π-π interactions facilitate the spin-orbit coupling effect in the solid state.

The Delayed Box: Biphenyl Bisimide Cyclophane, a Supramolecular Nano-environment for the Efficient Generation of Delayed Fluorescence

Activating delayed fluorescence emission in a dilute solution via a non-covalent approach is a formidable challenge. In this report, we propose a strategy for efficient delayed fluorescence generation in dilute solution using a non-covalent approach via supramolecularly engineered cyclophane-based nanoenvironments that provide sufficient binding strength to π-conjugated guests and that can stabilize triplet excitons by reducing vibrational dissipation and lowering the singlet-triplet energy gap for efficient delayed fluorescence emission. Toward this goal, a novel biphenyl bisimide-derived cyclophane is introduced as an electron-deficient and efficient triplet-generating host. Upon encapsulation of various carbazole-derived guests inside the nanocavity of this cyclophane, emissive charge transfer (CT) states close to the triplet energy level of the biphenyl bisimide are generated. The experimental results of host-guest studies manifest high association constants up to 104 M-1 as the prerequisite for inclusion complex formation, the generation of emissive CT states, and triplet-state stabilization in a diluted solution state. By means of different carbazole guest molecules, we could realize tunable delayed fluorescence emission in this carbazole-encapsulated biphenyl bisimide cyclophane in methylcyclohexane/carbon tetrachloride solutions with a quantum yield (QY) of up to 15.6%. Crystal structure analyses and solid-state photophysical studies validate the conclusions from our solution studies and provide insights into the delayed fluorescence emission mechanism.

Ambipolar conjugated ladder polymers by room-temperature Knoevenagel polymerization

Two soluble conjugated ladder polymers (cLPs), decorated with multiple electron-poor species (i.e., cyano groups, fused pentagons, and N-heterocyclic rings), have been synthesized from the newly developed tetraketo-functionalized double aza[5]helicene building blocks using a single-step Knoevenagel polycondensation strategy. This facile approach features mild conditions (e.g., room temperature) and high efficiency, allowing us to quickly access a nonalternant ladder-like conjugated system with the in situ formation of multicyano substituents in the backbone. Analysis by 1H NMR, FT-Raman, and FT-IR spectra confirms the successful synthesis of the resulting cLPs. The combination of theoretical calculations and experimental characterizations reveals that the slightly contorted geometry coupled with a random assignment of trans- and cis-isomeric repeating units in each main chain contributes to improving the solubility of such rigid, multicyano nanoribbon systems. Apart from outstanding thermal stability, the resulting cLPs exhibit attractive red fluorescence, excellent redox properties, and strong π-π interactions coupled with orderly face-on packing in their thin-film states. They are proven to be the first example of ambipolar cLPs that show satisfactory hole and electron mobilities of up to 0.01 and 0.01 cm2 V-1 s-1, respectively. As we demonstrate, the Knoevenagel polycondensation chemistries open a new window to create complex and unique ladder-like nanoribbon systems under mild reaction conditions that are otherwise challenging to achieve.

Room Temperature Phosphorescence in Crystalline Iodinated Eumelanin Monomer

We report the room temperature phosphorescence upon iodination on a crystalline eumelanin monomer with shielded hydroxyl moieties, ethyl 5,6-dimethoxyindole-2-carboxylate (DMICE). Ultrafast intersystem crossing (ISC) is observed in the iodinated (IDMICE) as well as brominated (BDMICE) analogues of the eumelanin monomer derivative in solution. The triplet quantum yields (φT) and intersystem crossing rates (kISC) of the halogenated eumelanin derivatives areφ T B D M I C E ${{\phi{} }_{T}^{BDMICE}}$ =25.4±1.1 %;k I S C B D M I C E ${{k}_{ISC}^{BDMICE}}$ =1.95×109 s-1 andφ T I D M I C E ${{\phi{} }_{T}^{IDMICE}}$ =59.1±1.6 %;k I S C I D M I C E = ${{k}_{ISC}^{IDMICE}=}$ 1.36×1010 s-1, as monitored using transient absorption spectroscopy. Theoretical calculations based on nuclear ensemble method reveal that computed kISC and spin-orbit coupling matrix elements for eumelanin derivatives are larger for IDMICE relative to BDMICE. The halogen and π-π interactions, with distinct excitonic coupling and higher ISC rate promote phosphorescence in IDMICE molecular crystals. Accessing triplet excited states and resultant photoluminescence through structural modification of eumelanin scaffolds paves way for exploring the versatility of eumelanin-inspired molecules as bio-functional materials.

The Key Role of Molecular Packing in Luminescence Property: From Adjacent Molecules to Molecular Aggregates

The luminescence materials act as the key components in many functional devices, as well as the detection and imaging systems, which can be permeated in each aspect of modern life, and attract more and more attention for the creative technology and applications. In addition to the diverse properties of organic luminogens, the multiple molecular packing at aggregated states frequently offers new and/or exciting performance. However, there still lacks comprehensive analysis of molecular packing in these organic materials, resulting in an increased gap between molecular design and practical applications. In this review, from the basic knowledge of organic compounds as single molecules, to the discernable property of excimer, charge transfer (CT) complex or self-assembly systems by adjacent molecules, and finally to the opto-electronic performance of molecular aggregates, the relevant factors to molecular packing and practical applications are discussed.

Boat and Chair Shaped Hexahalogen Synthons

Non-covalent halogen bonding interactions are quintessential in crystal engineering for the construction of distinctive supramolecular synthons. Here, we report the first crystalline evidences of unique boat and chair shaped cyclic hexahalogen synthons in the crystal structures of α,α,α',α',4-pentabromo-o-xylene (PBX) and α,α,α',α',4,5-hexabromo-o-xylene (HBX) respectively. Nature and stability of constituent interactions in the supramolecular synthons are scrutinized with the help of quantum-chemical calculations. Pendás' interacting quantum atoms approach confirmed the stability of Br⋅⋅⋅Br interactions leading to boat and chair shaped synthons with major contribution from exchange-correlation. Although both the molecules are achiral in nature, the packing forces guide PBX to crystallize in the chiral space group P2₁ with a helix-like orientation while HBX packs in a centrosymmetric P2₁ /n space group. The extended furcations in the pentabromo derivative construct a molecular framework consisting of macrocycles realized through halogen bonding.

External Electric Field Effect on the Strength of σ-Hole Interactions: A Theoretical Perspective in Like⋯Like Carbon-Containing Complexes

For the first time, σ-hole interactions within like⋯like carbon-containing complexes were investigated, in both the absence and presence of the external electric field (EEF). The effects of the directionality and strength of the utilized EEF were thoroughly unveiled in the (F-C-F₃)₂, (F-C-H₃)₂, and (H-C-F₃)₂ complexes. In the absence of the EEF, favorable interaction energies, with negative values, are denoted for the (F-C-F₃)₂ and (H-C-F₃)₂ complexes, whereas the (F-C-H₃)₂ complex exhibits unfavorable interactions. Remarkably, the strength of the applied EEF exhibits a prominent role in turning the repulsive forces within the latter complex into attractive ones. The symmetrical nature of the considered like⋯like carbon-containing complexes eradicated the effect of directionality of the EEF. The quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), and the noncovalent interaction (NCI) index, ensured the occurrence of the attractive forces, and also outlined the substantial contributions of the three coplanar atoms to the total strength of the studied complexes. Symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (SAPT) results show the dispersion-driven nature of the interactions.

Revisiting the covalent nature of halogen bonding: a polarized three-center four-electron bond

As an important intermolecular interaction, halogen bonding has been studied extensively, but its nature still suffers from controversy without one uniform essence. Electrostatics, charge transfer, polarization and dispersion are emphasized, but the covalent nature is usually overlooked except for the strong halogen bonding species I₃⁻, which is widely accepted as a result of a three-center four-electron (3c-4e) interaction. In our study, the potential energy surface of I₃⁻ has been evaluated to explore the dissociation from I₃⁻ to I₂⋯I⁻. We found that different from an equivalent 3c-4e bond in I₃⁻, I₂⋯I⁻ can be rationalized by a polarized one. In addition, when the orbitals are polarized, it is exactly what traditional charge transfer or the popular σ-hole picture describes. I₃⁻ can be described by the Lewis theory model with the middle I⁺ cation serving as the Lewis acid and two terminal I⁻ anions acting as Lewis base. Therefore, we further extended this model to a series of I-containing species with chemical composition of L–I⁺–L, F⁻–I⁺–L and H₃P–I⁺–L (L = OH⁻, F⁻, Cl⁻, Br⁻, I⁻, PH₃, NH₃, H₂S, HI, H₂O, HBr and HCl) to explore the nature of halogen bonding. When the forces of two bases around I⁺ are the same, it corresponds to an equivalent 3c-4e bond, such as I₃⁻. Otherwise, it is a polarized multicenter bond, such as I₂⋯I⁻. This work gives a new insight into the nature of halogen bonding compounds: besides the well-known I₃⁻, the nature of the other species is also a multicenter bond, existing as equivalent and polarized 3c-4e bonds, respectively.

Free Charge Carriers in Homo-Sorted π-Stacks of Donor-Acceptor Conjugates

Inspired by the high photoconversion efficiency observed in natural light-harvesting systems, the hierarchical organization of molecular building blocks has gained impetus in the past few decades. Particularly, the molecular arrangement and packing in the active layer of organic solar cells (OSCs) have garnered significant attention due to the decisive role of the nature of donor/acceptor (D/A) heterojunctions in charge carrier generation and ultimately the power conversion efficiency. This review focuses on the recent developments in emergent optoelectronic properties exhibited by self-sorted donor-on-donor/acceptor-on-acceptor arrangement of covalently linked D-A systems, highlighting the ultrafast excited state dynamics of charge transfer and transport. Segregated organization of donors and acceptors promotes the delocalization of photoinduced charges among the stacks, engendering an enhanced charge separation lifetime and percolation pathways with ambipolar conductivity and charge carrier yield. Covalently linking donors and acceptors ensure a sufficient D-A interface and interchromophoric electronic coupling as required for faster charge separation while providing better control over their supramolecular assemblies. The design strategies to attain D-A conjugate assemblies with optimal charge carrier generation efficiency, the scope of their application compared to state-of-the-art OSCs, current challenges, and future opportunities are discussed in the review. An integrated overview of rational design approaches derived from the comprehension of underlying photoinduced processes can pave the way toward superior optoelectronic devices and bring in new possibilities to the avenue of functional supramolecular architectures.

Excited-State Symmetry-Breaking Charge Separation Dynamics in Multibranched Perylene Diimide Molecules

As one of the most promising nonfullerene acceptors for organic photovoltaics, perylene diimide (PDI)-based multibranched molecules with twisted or three-dimensional (3D) geometric structures have been developed, which effectively increase the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells. Understanding the structure-property relationships in multichromophoric molecular architectures at molecular and ultrafast time levels is a crucial step in establishing new design principles in organic electronic materials. For this, photodriven excited-state symmetry-breaking charge separation (SB-CS) of PDI-based multichromophoric acceptors has been proposed to improve the PCE by reducing the self-aggregation of the planar PDI monomer. Herein, we investigated the intramolecular excited-state SB-CS and charge recombination (CR) dynamics of two symmetric phenyl-methane-based PDI derivatives, a twist dimer PM-PDI₂ (phenyl-methane-based PDI dimer) and a 3D configuration tetramer PM-PDI₄ (phenyl-methane-based PDI tetramer), in different solvents using ultrafast femtosecond transient absorption (fs-TA) spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations. The quantum chemical calculations and steady-state spectra show that the two PDI derivatives undergo conformational changes upon excitation, leading to their emission states that have the characteristics of partial charge-transfer (CT) exciton in all solvents. Based on the evolution of the fs-TA data, it is observed that the evolution from the CT state to SB-CS state is disfavored in a weak polar solvent, whereas clear SB-CS spectroscopic signatures of cationic and anionic PDI are observed in polar solvents. Faster CS and slower CR processes of PM-PDI₄ are observed in comparison to those of PM-PDI₂. The crowded space in the 3D structure shortens the distance between the branches, leading to a stronger electronic coupling at the lowest excited state and a larger negative Gibbs free energy change of PM-PDI₄ relative to that of PM-PDI₂, which benefits the charge separation among PDI units in PM-PDI₄. Besides, the 3D structure of PM-PDI₄ also restricts rotation to a surface crossing region between the excited state and ground state, thus inhibiting nonradiative CR process and increasing the CS state lifetime. Our results suggest that the kinetics of CS and CR processes are strongly related to the molecular geometric structure, and the excited-state symmetry breaking in the 3D structure acceptor has superior photogenerated charge and photovoltaic properties from the perspective of ultrafast dynamics.

Surface-controlled reversal of the selectivity of halogen bonds

Intermolecular halogen bonds are ideally suited for designing new molecular assemblies because of their strong directionality and the possibility of tuning the interactions by using different types of halogens or molecular moieties. Due to these unique properties of the halogen bonds, numerous areas of application have recently been identified and are still emerging. Here, we present an approach for controlling the 2D self-assembly process of organic molecules by adsorption to reactive vs. inert metal surfaces. Therewith, the order of halogen bond strengths that is known from gas phase or liquids can be reversed. Our approach relies on adjusting the molecular charge distribution, i.e., the σ-hole, by molecule-substrate interactions. The polarizability of the halogen and the reactiveness of the metal substrate are serving as control parameters. Our results establish the surface as a control knob for tuning molecular assemblies by reversing the selectivity of bonding sites, which is interesting for future applications.

Interacting Quantum Atoms-A Review

The aim of this review is threefold. On the one hand, we intend it to serve as a gentle introduction to the Interacting Quantum Atoms (IQA) methodology for those unfamiliar with it. Second, we expect it to act as an up-to-date reference of recent developments related to IQA. Finally, we want it to highlight a non-exhaustive, yet representative set of showcase examples about how to use IQA to shed light in different chemical problems. To accomplish this, we start by providing a brief context to justify the development of IQA as a real space alternative to other existent energy partition schemes of the non-relativistic energy of molecules. We then introduce a self-contained algebraic derivation of the methodological IQA ecosystem as well as an overview of how these formulations vary with the level of theory employed to obtain the molecular wavefunction upon which the IQA procedure relies. Finally, we review the several applications of IQA as examined by different research groups worldwide to investigate a wide variety of chemical problems.

Halogen-Bonded Assemblies of Arylene Imides and Diimides: Insight from Electronic, Structural, and Computational Studies

Halogen-bonding interactions in electron-deficient π scaffolds have largely been underexplored. Herein, the halogen-bonding properties of arylene imide/diimide-based electron-deficient scaffolds were studied. The influence of scaffold size, from small (phthalimide) to moderately sized (pyromellitic diimide or naphthalenediimides) to large (perylenediimide), axial-group modification, and number of halo substituents on the halogen bonding and its self-assembly was probed in a set of nine compounds. The structural modification leads to tunable optical and redox properties. The first reduction potential E 1 / 2 1 ranges between -1.09 and -0.17 V (vs. SCE). Two of the compounds, that is, 6 and 9, have deep-lying LUMOs with values reaching -4.2 eV. Single crystals of all nine systems were obtained, which showed Br⋅⋅⋅O, Br⋅⋅⋅Br, or Br⋅⋅⋅π halogen-bonding interactions, and a few systems are capable of forming all three types. These interactions lead to halogen-bonded rings (up to 12-membered), which propagate to form stacked 1D, 2D, or corrugated sheets. A few outliers were also identified, for example, molecules that prefer C-H⋅⋅⋅O hydrogen bonding over halogen bonding, or noncentrosymmetric rather than centrosymmetric organization. Computational studies based on Atoms in Molecules and Natural Bond Orbital analysis provided further insight into the halogen-bonding interactions. This study can lead to a predictive design tool-box to further explore related systems on surfaces reinforced by these weak directional forces.

Enhancement of Negative Photochromic Properties of Naphthalene-Bridged Phenoxyl-Imidazolyl Radical Complex

Negative photochromism has increased attention as a light-switch for functional materials. A development of fast photochromic molecules has been also expected because a rapid thermal back reaction within a millisecond time scale is useful for real-time switching. Herein, we synthesized the derivatives of the naphthalene-bridged phenoxyl-imidazolyl radical complex (Np-PIC) showing the negative photochromism to demonstrate the efficient strategy to increase the visible light sensitivity and to control the thermal back reaction rates. The distances of the C-C bond of the transient 2,4'-isomer shows good agreement with the thermodynamic stability, leading to the control of the thermal back reaction rate. We revealed the cyclic voltammetry and the DFT calculations are efficient to predict the characters of the HOMO and LUMO. The introduction of the electron-withdrawing dicyanoquinodimethane group is efficient to induce the photochromic reaction with increased visible-light sensitivity by the expansion of the π-conjugation. The results will give an important insight for the future development of fast-responsive negative photochromic molecules.

Two Orthogonal Halogen-Bonding Interactions Directed 2D Crystalline Supramolecular J-Dimer Lamellae

Dye assemblies exhibit fascinating properties and performances, both of which depend critically on the mutual packing arrangement of dyes and on the supramolecular architecture. Herein, we engineered, for the first time, an intriguing chlorosome-mimetic 2D crystalline J-dimer lamellar structure based on halogenated dyes in aqueous media by employing two distinct orthogonal halogen-bonding (XB) interactions. As the only building motif, antiparallel J-dimer was formed and stabilized by single π-stacking and dual halogen⋅⋅⋅π interactions. With two substituted halogen atoms acting as XB donors and the other two acting as acceptors, the constituent J-dimer units were linked by quadruple highly-directional halogen⋅⋅⋅halogen interactions in a staggered manner, resulting in unique 2D lamellar dye assemblies. This work champions and advances halogen-bonding as a remarkably potent tool for engineering dye aggregates with a controlled molecular packing arrangement and supramolecular architecture.

Supramolecular assembly of lanthanide-2,3,5,6-tetrafluoroterephthalic acid coordination polymers via fluorine⋯fluorine interactions: a platform for luminescent detection of Fe3+ and nitroaromatic compounds

F⋯F interactions stabilize {[Ln(TFTA)_1.5(H₂O)₂]·H₂O}_n 2D coordination polymers which selectively detect Fe³⁺ and p-nitrophenols.

Distinct Crystalline Aromatic Structural Motifs: Identification, Classification, and Implications

Spatial noncovalent helical organization of nucleobases in DNA and radial organization of chromophores in natural light-harvesting systems are fascinating yet enigmatic. Understanding the numerous weak interactions that drive the formation of elegant supramolecular architectures in native natural systems and developing bioinspired design strategies have seen a surge of interest in recent decades. Self-assembly of functional chromophores in the crystalline phase is a definitive strategy to identify novel molecule-molecule interactions, in particular, atom-atom interactions, and to understand the synergistic nature of noncovalent interactions that stabilizes the supramolecular organization. This Account narrates our recent efforts in developing desirable supramolecular motifs employing weak interaction-based strategies and our observation of deviations from the common motifs chartered in aromatic systems. Modulation of long-range aromatic interactions through chemical modifications (acylation, benzoylation, haloacylation, and alkylation of chromophores) to attain a preferred stacking (herringbone, lamellar, or columnar) is presented. Particular attention has been given to attaining lamellar or columnar packing possessing potential interchromophoric electronic coupling mediated high charge mobility. Supramolecular arrangements of noncovalently or covalently associated donor-acceptor systems that open up additional possibilities of packing modes (segregated, mixed etc.) are explored. Our persistent efforts yielded distinct twisted-segregated and alternate distichous stacks for the nonparallel covalently linked donor-acceptor systems that favor a long-lived photoinduced charge-separated state. We further move on to discuss the unconventional packing motifs that were identified recently. The highly sought-after Greek cross (+) stacking of chromophores in crystalline phase and an elegant crystalline radial arrangement of chromophores are examined. The Greek cross (+) stacked architecture exhibits monomer-like emission characteristics owing to the absence of exciton coupling across the orthogonally stacked chromophores. Crystalline helical chromophore assembly is yet another emerging motif with far-reaching applications in domains ranging from asymmetric catalysis to chiral smart materials and has been accounted here by citing certain phenomenal examples from literature. Thus, this Account demonstrates that identifying and classifying new structural motifs based on topological aspects, such as interchromophoric orientation (cross) and extended chromophore arrangement in the crystal lattice (radial, helical, etc.), are crucial since such fundamental characteristics dictate the properties emerging out of the corresponding motifs. Encouraged from ours and others' works, we propose the addition of new aromatic supramolecular structural motifs, namely, cross-stacked, helical, and radial arrangements, in order to expand the classification. We believe that identifying new emergent property-based supramolecular motifs and investigating the methods to achieve the desired motif will eventually have implications in fundamental crystal engineering, supramolecular chemistry, and biomimetic design of functional materials.

Triptycene End-Capped Quinoxalinophenanthrophenazines (QPPs): Influence of Substituents and Conditions on Aggregation in the Solid State

Triptycene end-capped quinoxalinophenanthrophenazine reveals a coplanar arrangement with a high overlap of the π planes. Four structurally related model compounds bearing electron-withdrawing or -donating groups were synthesized, and their optoelectronic properties were characterized by using cyclovoltammetry, absorption- and emission spectroscopy as well as theoretical calculations. The directional robustness of the triptycene end-capping of these compounds was tested by using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The impact of solvents and crystallization conditions has also been investigated. In total, 17 single-crystal structures were obtained. Each structure was evaluated for its potential charge-transfer capability taking into account the overall molecular packing, solvent enclathration and the structural overlap of the π planes of adjacent molecules. For this purpose, charge-transfer integrals were also calculated for every π-stacked dimer.
