A Mononuclear, Nonheme FeII-Piloty's Acid (PhSO2NHOH) Adduct: An Intermediate in the Production of {FeNO}7/8 Complexes from Piloty's Acid

Reactivity of Thiolate and Hydrosulfide with a Mononuclear {FeNO}7 Complex Featuring a Very High N-O Stretching Frequency

Synthesis, characterization, electronic structure, and redox reactions of a mononuclear {FeNO}7 complex with a very high N-O stretching frequency in solution are presented. Nitrosylation of [(LKP)Fe(DMF)]2+ (1) (LKP = tris((1-methyl-4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)methyl)amine) produced a five-coordinate {FeNO}7 complex, [(LKP)Fe(NO)]2+ (2). While complex 2 could accommodate an additional water molecule to generate a six-coordinate {FeNO}7 complex, [(LKP)Fe(NO)(H2O)]2+ (3), the coordinated H2O in 3 dissociates to generate 2 in solution. Unraveling Metal-Ligand Bonding in an HNO-Evolving {FeNO}6 Complex with a Combined X-ray Spectroscopic Approach

Photolytic delivery of nitric oxide and nitroxide has substantial biomedical and phototherapeutic applications. Here, we utilized hard X-ray spectroscopic methods to identify key geometric and electronic structural features of two photolabile {FeNO}6 complexes where the compounds differ in the presence of a pendant thiol in [Fe(NO)(TMSPS2)(TMSPS2H)] and thioether in [Fe(NO)(TMSPS2)(TMSPS2CH3)] with the former complex being the only transition metal system to photolytically generate HNO. Fe Kβ XES identifies the photoreactant systems as essentially Fe(II)-NO+, while valence-to-core XES extracts a NO oxidation state of +0.5. Finally, the pre-edge of the Fe high-energy-resolution fluorescence detected (HERFD) XAS spectra is shown to be acutely sensitive to perturbation of the Fe-NO covalency enhanced by the 3d-4p orbital mixing dipole intensity contribution. Collectively, this X-ray spectroscopic approach enables future time-resolved insights in these systems and extensions to other challenging redox noninnocent {FeNO}x systems.

Direct Reduction of NO to N2O by a Mononuclear Nonheme Thiolate Ligated Iron(II) Complex via Formation of a Metastable {FeNO}7 Complex

Addition of NO to a nonheme dithiolate-ligated iron(II) complex, FeII(Me3TACN)(S2SiMe2) (1), results in the generation of N2O. Low-temperature spectroscopic studies reveal a metastable six-coordinate {FeNO}7 intermediate (S = 3/2) that was trapped at -135 °C and was characterized by low-temperature UV-vis, resonance Raman, EPR, Mössbauer, XAS, and DFT studies. Thermal decay of the {FeNO}7 species leads to the evolution of N2O, providing a rare example of a mononuclear thiolate-ligated {FeNO}7 that mediates NO reduction to N2O without the requirement of any exogenous electron or proton sources.

Insights into the κ-P,N Coordination of 1,3,5-Triaza-7-phosphaadamantane and Derivatives: κ-P,N-Heterometallic Complexes and a 15N Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Survey

Complexes {[(PTA)₂CpRu-μ-CN-1κC:2κ²N-RuCp(PTA)₂-ZnCl₃]}·2DMSO (13) {[ZnCl₂(H₂O)]-(PTA-1κP:2κ²N)(PTA)CpRu-μ-CN-1κC:2κ²N-RuCp(PTA)(PTA-1κP:2κ²N)-[ZnCl₂(H₂O)]}Cl (14), [RuCp(HdmoPTA)(PPh₃)(PTA)](CF₃SO₃)₂ (20), [RuCp(HdmoPTA)(HPTA)(PPh₃)](CF₃SO₃)₃ (21), and [RuCp(dmoPTA)(PPh₃)(PTA)](CF₃SO₃) (22) were obtained and characterized, and their crystal structure together with that of the previously published complex 18 is reported. The behavior of the 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphatricyclo[3.3.1.13,7]decane (PTA) and 3,7-dimethyl-1,3,7-triaza-5-phosphabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane (dmoPTA) ligands against protonation and κN-coordination is discussed, on the basis of ¹⁵N nuclear magnetic resonance data collected on 22 different compounds, including PTA (1), HdmoPTA (7H), and some common derivatives as free ligands (2–6 and 8), along with mono- and polymetallic complexes containing PTA and/or HdmoPTA (9–22). ¹⁵N detection via ¹H–¹⁵N heteronuclear multiple bond correlation allowed the construction of a small library of ¹⁵N chemical shifts that shed light on important features regarding κN-coordination in PTA and its derivatives.

To shed light on the behavior of the triazaphosphines 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphatricyclo[3.3.1.13,7]decane (PTA) and 3,7-dimethyl-1,3,7-triaza-5-phosphabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane (dmoPTA) upon κN coordination and N protonation, the ¹⁵N chemical shifts of 22 compounds, including PTA and a representative variety of its derivatives, piano-stool complexes, were collected by ¹H−¹⁵N heteronuclear multiple bond correlation nuclear magnetic resonance. New heterometallic complexes containing PTA were also synthesized and fully characterized.

A Nonheme Mononuclear {FeNO}7 Complex that Produces N2 O in the Absence of an Exogenous Reductant

A new nonheme iron(II) complex, Fe^II (Me₃ TACN)((OSi^Ph2 )₂ O) (1), is reported. Reaction of 1 with NO_(g) gives a stable mononitrosyl complex Fe(NO)(Me₃ TACN)((OSi^Ph2 )₂ O) (2), which was characterized by Mössbauer (δ=0.52 mm s^-1 , |ΔE_Q |=0.80 mm s^-1 ), EPR (S=3/2), resonance Raman (RR) and Fe K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopies. The data show that 2 is an {FeNO}⁷ complex with an S=3/2 spin ground state. The RR spectrum (λ_exc =458 nm) of 2 combined with isotopic labeling (¹⁵ N, ¹⁸ O) reveals ν(N-O)=1680 cm^-1 , which is highly activated, and is a nearly identical match to that seen for the reactive mononitrosyl intermediate in the nonheme iron enzyme FDPnor (ν(NO)=1681 cm^-1 ). Complex 2 reacts rapidly with H₂ O in THF to produce the N-N coupled product N₂ O, providing the first example of a mononuclear nonheme iron complex that is capable of converting NO to N₂ O in the absence of an exogenous reductant.

Mechanistic Studies on the Reaction between Aquacobalamin and the HNO Donor Piloty's Acid over a Wide pH Range in Aqueous Solution

Detailed kinetic and mechanistic studies have been carried out on the reaction between aquacobalamin/hydroxocobalamin (CblOH₂⁺/CblOH) and nitroxyl (HNO) generated by Piloty's acid (PA, N-hydroxybenzenesulfonamide) over a wide pH range (3.5-13). The resulting data showed that in a basic solution HNO can react with hydroxocobalamin to form nitrosylcobalamin despite the inert nature of CblOH. It was shown that at low PA concentrations the rate-determining step is the decomposition of PhSO₂NHO^- to release HNO, whereas the reaction between CblOH and HNO becomes the rate-determining step at high PA concentrations. Data from kinetic studies on the reaction of CblOH with an excess of HNO enabled us to experimentally determine the pK_a(HNO) value from initial rate data as a function of pH, giving pK_a(HNO) = 11.47 ± 0.04. An especially interesting observation was made in the neutral pH range, where PA is stable and does not produce HNO. Under such conditions, rapid formation of CblNO was observed in the studied system. The obtained data suggest that CblOH₂⁺ reacts directly with PA to form a Piloty's acid-bound cobalamin intermediate, which deprotonates rapidly at neutral pH followed by rate-determining S-N bond cleavage to give CblNO and release PhSO₂^-.
