Spontaneous Formation of a Cross-Linked Supramolecular Polymer Both in the Solid State and in Solution, Driven by Platinum(II) Metallacycle-Based Host-Guest Interactions

Supramolecular macrocycles, renowned for their remarkable capabilities in molecular recognition and complexation, have emerged as pivotal elements driving advancements across various innovative research fields. Cocrystal materials, an important branch within the realm of crystalline organic materials, have garnered considerable attention owing to their simple preparation methods and diverse potential applications, particularly in optics, electronics, chemical sensing and photothermal conversion. In recent years, macrocyclic entitles have been successfully brought into this field, providing an essential and complementary channel to create novel functional materials, especially those with multiple functionalities and smart stimuli-responsiveness. In this Review, we present an overview of the research efforts on functional cocrystals constructed with macrocycles, covering their design principles, preparation strategies, assembly modes, and diverse functions and applications. Finally, the remaining challenges and perspectives are outlined. We anticipate that this review will serve as a valuable and timely reference for researchers interested in supramolecular crystalline materials and beyond, catalyzing the emergence of more original and innovative studies in related fields.

A Temperature-Sensitive Fluorescent Supramolecular Polymer Constructed by Discrete Platinum(II) Metallacycle and Pillar[5]arene-Based Host-Guest Interactions

The application of thermosensitive fluorescent supramolecular polymers in advanced optical materials, chemical sensors, artificial optical devices, and external stimulus responses remains underdeveloped. In this study, we introduced a novel method for constructing a mechanically interlocked fluorescent supramolecular polymer utilizing host-guest interactions, including C-H···π interactions and π-π stacking. This polymer exhibits outstanding temperature-sensitive fluorescence properties and is environmentally friendly due to its recyclability. Leveraging the polymer's fluorescence response at critical temperature ranges, we developed a high-temperature warning device. This device utilizes the temperature-sensitive fluorescence characteristic of the polymer to indicate dangerous temperature levels, thereby demonstrating its potential in practical safety applications.

Nested non-covalent interactions expand the functions of supramolecular polymer networks

Supramolecular polymer networks contain non-covalent cross-links that enable access to broadly tunable mechanical properties and stimuli-responsive behaviors; the incorporation of multiple unique non-covalent cross-links within such materials further expands their mechanical responses and functionality. To date, however, the design of such materials has been accomplished through discrete combinations of distinct interaction types in series, limiting materials design logic. Here we introduce the concept of leveraging "nested" supramolecular crosslinks, wherein two distinct types of non-covalent interactions exist in parallel, to control bulk material functions. To demonstrate this concept, we use polymer-linked Pd2L4 metal-organic cage (polyMOC) gels that form hollow metal-organic cage junctions through metal-ligand coordination and can exhibit well-defined host-guest binding within their cavity. In these "nested" supramolecular network junctions, the thermodynamics of host-guest interactions within the junctions affect the metal-ligand interactions that form those junctions, ultimately translating to substantial guest-dependent changes in bulk material properties that could not be achieved in traditional supramolecular networks with multiple interactions in series.

Supramolecular Coordination Complexes for Synergistic Cancer Therapy

Supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs) are predictable and size-tunable supramolecular self-assemblies constructed through directional coordination bonds between readily available organic ligands and metallic receptors. Based on planar and 3D structures, SCCs can be mainly divided into two categories: metallacycles (e.g., rhomboidal, triangular, rectangular, and hexagonal) and metallacages (e.g., tetrahedral, hexahedral, and dodecahedral). The directional coordination bonds enable the efficient formation of metallacycles and metallacages with well-defined architectures and geometries. SCCs exhibit several advantages, including good directionality, strong interaction force, tunable modularity, and good solution processability, making them highly attractive for biomedical applications, especially in cellular imaging and cancer therapy. Compared with their molecular precursors, SCCs demonstrate enhanced cellular uptake and a strengthened tumor accumulation effect, owing to their inherently charged structures. These properties and the chemotherapeutic potential inherent to organic platinum complexes have promoted their widespread application in antitumor therapy. Furthermore, the defined structures of SCCs, achieved via the design modification of assembly elements and introduction of different functional groups, enable them to combat malignant tumors through multipronged treatment modalities. Because the development of cancer-treatment methodologies integrated in clinics has evolved from single-modality chemotherapy to synergistic multimodal therapy, the development of functional SCCs for synergistic cancer therapy is crucial. While some pioneering reviews have explored the bioapplications of SCCs, often categorized by a specific function or focusing on the specific metal or ligand types, a comprehensive exploration of their synergistic multifunctionality is a critical gap in the current literature.In this Account, we focus on platinum-based SCCs and their applications in cancer therapy. While other metals, such as Pd-, Rh-, Ru-, and Ir-based SCCs, have been explored for cancer therapy by Therrien and Casini et al., platinum-based SCCs have garnered significant interest, owing to their unique advantages in antitumor therapy. These platinum-based SCCs, which enhance antitumor efficacy, are considered prominent candidates for cancer therapies owing to their desirable properties, such as potent antitumor activity, exceptionally low systemic toxicity, active tumor-targeting ability, and enhanced cellular uptake. Furthermore, diverse diagnostic and therapeutic modalities (e.g., chemotherapy, photothermal therapy, and photodynamic therapy) can be integrated into a single platform based on platinum-based SCCs for cancer therapy. Consequently, herein, we summarize our recent research on platinum-based SCCs for synergistic cancer therapy with particular emphasis on the cooperative interplay between different therapeutic methods. In the Conclusions section, we present the key advancements achieved on the basis of our research findings and propose future directions that may significantly impact the field.

Pillar[5]arene-Based Fluorescent Supramolecular Polymers Without Conventional Chromophores

Fluorescent supramolecular polymers have garnered significant attention due to their successful integration of supramolecular polymers and fluorescence, offering vast potential for applications in sensing, imaging, optoelectronics, and photonics. In this study, we present a novel supramolecular polymer based on P5-OH, derived from mono-substituted pillararene macrocycles. Notably, these formed supramolecular polymeric aggregates exhibit a prominent blue emission, representing a rare instance of fluorescent polymers devoid of conventional chromophores. Furthermore, through the modification of alkyl chain ending groups attached to pillar[5]arenes, slight shifts in the emission peak could be observed. This research expands the scope of functional supramolecular polymeric systems utilizing pillararenes, providing valuable insights for the design of innovative luminescent materials and optical devices.

A Two-Step Fluorescence-Resonance Energy Transfer System Constructed by Platinum(II) Metallacycle Based Molecular Recognition

Considerable progress in the construction of efficient fluorescence-resonance energy transfer (FRET) systems has promoted the development of artificial energy transfer materials. However, despite recent advances, the exploration of efficient and easy strategies to fabricate novel supramolecular systems with FRET activities is still a challenge. Here, we report that a two-step FRET system was successfully achieved, driven by platinum metallacycle based host-guest interactions. The two-step FRET system is used for the preparation of a white-light-emitting diode and serves as a nanoreactor for the photosynthetic process. This work offers a strategy for the fabrication of FRET systems and opens opportunities for functional materials constructed by platinum(II) metallacycle based host-guest interactions.

Switchable metallacycles and metallacages

Two-dimensional metallacycles and three-dimensional metallacages constructed by coordination-driven self-assembly have attracted much attention because they exhibit unique structures and properties and are highly efficient to synthesize. Introduction of switching into supramolecular chemistry systems is a popular strategy, as switching can endow systems with reversible features that are triggered by different stimuli. Through this strategy, novel switchable metallacycles and metallacages were generated, which can be reversibly switched into different stable states with distinct characteristics by external stimuli. Switchable metallacycles and metallacages exhibit versatile structures and reversible properties and are inherently dynamic and respond to artificial signals; thus, these structures have many promising applications in a wide range of fields, such as drug delivery, data processing, pollutant removal, switchable catalysis, smart functional materials, etc. This review focuses on the design of switchable metallacycles and metallacages, their switching behaviours and mechanisms triggered by external stimuli, and the corresponding structural changes and resultant properties and functions.

Non-equilibrium Nanoassemblies Constructed by Confined Coordination on a Polymer Chain

Biological systems employ non-equilibrium self-assembly to create ordered nanoarchitectures with sophisticated functions. However, it is challenging to construct artificial non-equilibrium nanoassemblies due to lack of control over assembly dynamics and kinetics. Herein, we design a series of linear polymers with different side groups for further coordination-driven self-assembly based on shape-complementarity. Such a design introduces a main-chain confinement which effectively slows down the assembly process of side groups, thus allowing us to monitor the real-time evolution of lychee-like nanostructures. The function related to the non-equilibrium nature is further explored by performing photothermal conversion study. The ability to observe and capture non-equilibrium states in this supramolecular system will enhance our understanding of the thermodynamic and kinetic features as well as functions of living systems.

Synthesis of Carborane-Backbone Metallacycles for Highly Selective Capture of n-Pentane

The specific recognition and separation of alkanes with similar molecular structures and close boiling points face significant scientific challenges and industrial demands. Here, rectangular carborane-based metallacycles were designed to selectively encapsulate n-pentane from n-pentane, iso-pentane, and cyclo-pentane mixtures in a simple-to-operate and more energy-efficient way. Metallacycle 1, bearing 1,2-di(4-pyridyl) ethylene, can selectively separate n-pentane from these three-component mixtures with a purity of 97%. The selectivity is ascribed to the capture of the preferred guest with matching size, C-H···π interactions, and potential B-H^δ-···H^δ+-C interactions. Besides, the removal of n-pentane gives rise to original guest-free carborane-based metallacycles, which can be recycled without losing performance. Considering the variety of substituted carborane derivatives, metal ions, and organic linkers, these new carborane-based supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs) may be broadly applicable to other challenging recognition and separation systems with good performance.

Phenylthiol-BODIPY-based supramolecular metallacycles for synergistic tumor chemo-photodynamic therapy

The development of more effective tumor therapy remains challenging and has received widespread attention. In the past decade, there has been growing interest in synergistic tumor therapy based on supramolecular coordination complexes. Herein, we describe two triangular metallacycles (1 and 2) constructed by the formation of pyridyl boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY)-platinum coordination. Metallacycle 2 had considerable tumor penetration, as evidenced by the phenylthiol-BODIPY ligand imparting red fluorescent emission at ∼660 nm, enabling bioimaging, and transport visualization within the tumor. Based on the therapeutic efficacy of the platinum(II) acceptor and high singlet oxygen (¹O₂) generation ability of BODIPY, 2 was successfully incorporated into nanoparticles and applied in chemo-photodynamic tumor therapy against malignant human glioma U87 cells, showing excellent synergistic therapeutic efficacy. A half-maximal inhibitory concentration of 0.35 μM was measured for 2 against U87 cancer cells in vitro. In vivo experiments indicated that 2 displayed precise tumor targeting ability and good biocompatibility, along with strong antitumor effects. This work provides a promising approach for treating solid tumors by synergistic chemo-photodynamic therapy of supramolecular coordination complexes.

Macrocycle-Based Solid-State Supramolecular Polymers

Supramolecular polymers, generated by connecting monomers through noncovalent interactions, have received considerable attention over the past years, as they provide versatile platforms for developing diverse aesthetically pleasing polymeric structures with promising applications in a variety of fields, such as medicine, catalysis, and sensing. In the development of supramolecular polymers, macrocyclic hosts play a very important role. Benefiting from their abundant host-guest chemistry and self-assembly characteristics, macrocycles themselves or their host-guest complexes can self-assemble to form well-ordered supramolecular polymeric architectures including pseudopolyrotaxanes and polyrotaxanes. The integration of these topological structures into supramolecular polymeric materials also imbues them with some unforeseen functions. Current interest in macrocycle-based supramolecular polymers is mostly focused on the development of supramolecular soft materials in solution or gel-state, in which the dynamic nature of noncovalent interactions endows supramolecular polymers with a wealth of "smart" properties, such as multiresponsiveness and self-repair capabilities. While preparation of macrocycle-derived supramolecular polymers in the solid state is a relatively challenging but intriguing prospect, they are an important part of the field of supramolecular polymers. On one hand, the construction of macrocycle-based solid-state supramolecular polymers enables us to obtain new materials with novel properties and functions such as mechano-responsiveness. On the other hand, the molecular structures and arrangements in these materials are well-identified by X-ray crystallography techniques, offering a direct visual representation of the supramolecular polymerization process. The analysis of the role of noncovalent interactions in these architectures allows us to design more sophisticated and elegant supramolecular polymers in a highly rationalized and controllable manner. This Account serves to summarize the research progress on macrocycle-based solid-state supramolecular polymers (MSSPs), including the contributions toward this field made by our group. For constructing MSSPs, the key point is to control noncovalent interactions. Thus, in this Account, we primarily classify these MSSPs by different noncovalent interactions involved to connect the monomers, including metal-ligand interactions, host-guest interactions, π···π stacking, and halogen bonding. These noncovalent interactions are highly associated with the structures and functions of the resultant MSSPs. For instance, using metal-ligand interactions as driving forces, metal clusters can be introduced in MSSPs which afford systems with solid-state luminescence or proton conduction properties; supramolecular polymerization using macrocycle-based host-guest interactions can modulate the molecular arrangement of some specific molecules in the solid state, which further influences their solid-state properties; π···π stacking interactions and halogen bonding give chemists more choice to design MSSPs with various elements. The role of macrocyclic hosts in MSSPs is also revealed in these descriptions. Finally, the remaining challenges are identified for further development of future prospects. We hope that this Account can inspire new discoveries in the realm of supramolecular functional systems and offer new opportunities for the construction of supramolecular architectures and solid-state materials.

Highly efficient synthesis of non-planar macrocycles possessing intriguing self-assembling behaviors and ethene/ethyne capture properties

It has been a challenging topic and perpetual task to design and synthesize covalent macrocycles with characteristic self-assembling behaviors and excellent host-guest properties in supramolecular chemistry. Herein, we present a family of macrocyclic diphenylamine[n]arenes (DPA[n]s, n = 3-7) consisting of methyldiphenylamine units through a facile one-pot synthesis strategy. Unlike many other reported macrocyclic arenes, the resultant non-planar DPA[n]s feature intrinsic π-π stacking interactions, interesting self-assembling behaviors and ethene/ethyne capture properties. Specifically, strong multiple intermolecular edge-to-face aromatic interactions in DPA[3] have been systematically investigated both in solid and solution states. The intriguing findings on the intermolecular edge-to-face stacking interaction mode in the macrocycle would further highlight the importance of noncovalent π-π interaction in supramolecular self-assembly. This study will also shed light on the macrocyclic and supramolecular chemistry and, we expect, will provide a direction for design and synthesis of covalent macrocycles in this area.

A versatile molecular logic system based on Eu(III) coordination polymer film electrodes combined with multiple properties of NADH

Herein, a new type of lanthanide coordination polymer film made up of europium (Eu(iii)) and poly(N-methacryloylglycine) (Eu(iii)-PMAG) was prepared on an ITO electrode surface driven by the coordination between N-methacryloylglycine (MAG) and Eu(iii) through a single-step polymerization process. The fluorescence signal of Eu(iii)-PMAG films at 617 nm originating from Eu(iii) could be well retained in the buffer solution but was regulated by the concentration of Cu(ii) and the complexing agent EDTA. The switching of fluorescence by Cu(ii) was attributed to the inhibition of the "antenna effect" between Eu(iii) and the MAG ligand in the films. The coexistence of reduced β-nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) in the solution can apparently quench the fluorescence of Eu(iii)-PMAG films through the internal filtration effect of UV absorbance overlapping the excitation wavelength, but itself exhibiting a fluorescence emission at 468 nm. In addition, the electrocatalytic oxidation of NADH with the help of the ferrocenedicarboxylic acid (FcDA) probe demonstrated a cyclic voltammetry (CV) signal at 0.45 V (vs. SCE). Based on various reversible stimulus-responsive behaviours, a 4-input/10-output logic network was built using Cu(ii), EDTA, NADH and FcDA as inputs and the signals of fluorescence from Eu(iii)-PMAG (617 nm) and NADH (468 nm), the CV response from FcDA and the UV-vis absorbance from the Cu(ii)-EDTA complex as outputs. Meanwhile, 6 different functional logic devices were constructed based on the same versatile platform, including a 2-to-1 encoder, a 1-to-2 decoder, a 1-to-2 demultiplexer, a parity checker, a transfer gate and a reprogrammable 3-input/2-output keypad lock. Combined with the new type of lanthanide coordination polymer film, NADH played central roles in designing sophisticated computing systems with its fluorescence, UV and electrocatalytic properties. This work might provide a novel avenue to develop intelligent multi-analyte sensing and information processing at the molecular level based on one single platform.

A tetraphenylethene-based Pd2L4 metallacage with aggregation-induced emission and stimuli-responsive behavior

A tetraphenylethene-based Pd2L4 metallacage was self-assembled from four TPE-pyridine ligands with two Pd2+ ions. This metallacage with D4 symmetry exhibited a classical aggregation-induced emission property in different solvents and reversible stimuli-responsive behaviour with chloride ions and silver ions, successively.

Recent developments in the construction and applications of platinum-based metallacycles and metallacages via coordination

Coordination-driven suprastructures have attracted much interest due to their unique properties. Among these structures, platinum-based architectures have been broadly studied due to their facile preparation. The resultant two- or three-dimensional (2D or 3D) systems have many advantages over their precursors, such as improved emission tuning, sensitivity as sensors, and capture and release of guests, and they have been applied in biomedical diagnosis as well as in catalysis. Herein, we review the recent results related to platinum-based coordination-driven self-assembly (CDSA), and the text is organized to emphasizes both the synthesis of new metallacycles and metallacages and their various applications.

Coordination-Directed Construction of Molecular Links

Since the emergence of the concept of chemical topology, interlocked molecular assemblies have graduated from academic curiosities and poorly defined species to become synthetic realities. Coordination-directed synthesis provides powerful, diverse, and increasingly sophisticated protocols for accessing interlocked molecules. Originally, metal ions were employed solely as templates to gather and position building blocks in entwined or threaded arrangements. Recently, metal centers have increasingly featured within the backbones of the integral structural elements, which in turn use noncovalent interactions to self-assemble into intricate topologies. By outlining ingenious recent examples as well as seminal classic cases, this Review focuses on the role of metal-ligand paradigms in assembling molecular links. In addition, the ever-evolving approaches to efficient assembly, the structural features of the resulting architectures, and their prospects for the future are also presented.

Capture and Release of Singlet Oxygen in Coordination-Driven Self-Assembled Organoplatinum(II) Metallacycles

Singlet oxygen (¹O₂), as an important active reagent, has found wide applications in photodynamic therapy (PDT), synthetic chemistry, and materials science. Organic conjugated aromatics serving as hosts to capture and release singlet oxygen have been systematically investigated over the last decades. Herein, we present a [6 + 6] organoplatinum(II) metallacycle by using ∼180° dipyridylanthracene donor and ∼120° Pt(II) acceptor as the building blocks, which enables the capture and release of singlet oxygen with relatively high photooxygenation and thermolysis rate constants. The photooxygenation of the metallacycle to the corresponding endoperoxide was performed by sensitized irradiation, and the resulting endoperoxide is stable at room temperature and can be stored under ambient condition over months. Upon simple heating of the neat endoperoxide under inert atmosphere at 120 °C for 4 h, the resulting endoperoxide can be reconverted to the corresponding parent form and singlet oxygen. The photooxygenation and thermolysis products were characterized by NMR spectroscopy and electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometric analysis. Density functional theory calculations were conducted in order to reveal the frontier molecular orbital interactions and reactivity. This work provides a new material platform for singlet oxygen related promising applications.

A bi-component supramolecular gel for selective fluorescence detection and removal of Hg2+ in water

A bi-component supramolecular gel (RQ) was successfully constructed by the assembly of the gelators 4-aminophenyl functionalized naphthalimide derivative (R) and tri-(pyridine-4-yl)-functionalized trimesic amide (Q) in DMSO-H2O (6.1 : 3.9, v/v) binary solution. The gel RQ exhibits excellent self-healing capacity. Interestingly, the RQ could fluorescently detect and reversibly remove Hg2+ from water through cation-π interactions with high selectivity, efficient adsorption and quick response. The limit of lowest detection (LOD) of the RQ for Hg2+ is 4.52 × 10-8 M and the separation ratio is 91.14%. Moreover, the RQ could be efficiently recycled and regenerated with little loss via a simple treatment by I-. Notably, thin films based on RQ and RQ + Hg2+ were prepared, which could serve as convenient and efficient test tools for the detection of Hg2+ and I-, respectively. This work provided an efficient method and novel supramolecular gel material for the separation and detection of Hg2+.

Self-Healing Heterometallic Supramolecular Polymers Constructed by Hierarchical Assembly of Triply Orthogonal Interactions with Tunable Photophysical Properties

Here, we present a method for the building of new bicyclic heterometallic cross-linked supramolecular polymers by hierarchical unification of three types of orthogonal noncovalent interactions, including platinum(II)-pyridine coordination-driven self-assembly, zinc-terpyridine complex, and host-guest interactions. The platinum-pyridine coordination provides the primary driving force to form discrete rhomboidal metallacycles. The assembly does not interfere with the zinc-terpyridine complexes, which link the discrete metallacycles into linear supramolecular polymers, and the conjugation length is extended upon the formation of the zinc-terpyridine complexes, which red-shifts the absorption and emission spectra. Finally, host-guest interactions via bis-ammonium salt binding to the benzo-21-crown-7 (B21C7) groups on the platinum acceptors afford the cross-linked supramolecular polymers. By continuous increase of the concentration of the supramolecular polymer to a relatively high level, supramolecular polymer gel is obtained, which exhibits self-healing properties and reversible gel-sol transitions stimulated by various external stimuli, including temperature, K⁺, and cyclen. Moreover, the photophysical properties of the supramolecular polymers could be effectively tuned by varying the substituents of the precursor ligands.

Biomedically Relevant Self-Assembled Metallacycles and Metallacages

Diverse metal-organic complexes (MOCs), shaped as rectangles, triangles, hexagons, prisms, and cages, can be formed by coordination between metal ions (Pt, Pd, Ru, Rh, Ir, Zn, Co, and Cd) and organic ligands, with potential applications as alternatives to conventional biomedical materials for therapeutic, sensing, and imaging purposes. MOCs have been investigated as anticancer drugs in the treatment of malignant tumors in lung, cervical, breast, colon, liver, prostate, ovarian, brain, stomach, bone, skin, mouth, thyroid, and other cancers. MOCs with one, two, and three cavities have also been investigated as drug carriers and prepared for the loading and release of different drugs. In addition, MOCs can target proteins by the shape effect and recognize sugars and DNA by electrostatic interactions, as well as estradiol by host-guest interactions, etc. This Perspective mainly covers achievements in the biomedical application of MOCs. We aim to identify some key trends in the reported MOC structures in relation to their biomedical activity and potential applications.

Self-Assembled Fluorescent Pt(II) Metallacycles as Artificial Light-Harvesting Systems

Light-harvesting is one of the key steps in photosynthesis, but developing artificial light-harvesting systems (LHSs) with high energy transfer efficiencies has been a challenging task. Here we report fluorescent hexagonal Pt(II) metallacycles as a new platform to fabricate artificial LHSs. The metallacycles (4 and 5) are easily accessible by coordination-driven self-assembly of a triphenylamine-based ditopic ligand 1 with di-platinum acceptors 2 and 3, respectively. They possess good fluorescence properties both in solution and in the solid state. Notably, the metallacycles show aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) characteristics in a DMSO-H₂O solvent system. In the presence of the fluorescent dye Eosin Y (ESY), the emission intensities of the metallacycles decrease but the emission intensity of ESY increases. The absorption spectrum of ESY and the emission spectra of the metallacycles show a considerable overlap, suggesting the possibility of energy transfer from the metallacycles to ESY, with an energy transfer efficiency as high as 65% in the 4^a+ESY system.

A novel AIE-based supramolecular polymer gel serves as an ultrasensitive detection and efficient separation material for multiple heavy metal ions

Recently, ultrasensitive stimuli-responsive materials have received extensive attention due to their high sensitivity and wide applications. Herein, we report a novel approach to design ultrasensitive responsive materials by rationally introducing the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect into supramolecular polymer gels. According to this approach, by rationally introducing self-assembly moieties and a fluorophore, the obtained gelator DNS can act as an AIEgen; it showed strong AIE after aggregating into the supramolecular polymer gel GDNS. More interestingly, because the aggregation of DNS led to amplification of the detective signal, the AIE-based supramolecular polymer gel GDNS could ultrasensitively detect the heavy metal ions Hg2+, Cu2+, and Fe3+ by a signal amplification mechanism; the lowest detection limits reached 10-11 M. In addition, the xerogel of GDNS could adsorb and separate Hg2+, Cu2+, and Fe3+ from aqueous solution with favourable adsorption properties, and the adsorption rates ranged from 94.70% to 99.37%. Furthermore, the gel GDNS could act as a convenient test kit for Hg2+, Cu2+, and Fe3+ as well as a smart fluorescent display material.

Aggregation-induced emission supramolecular organic framework (AIE SOF) gels constructed from tri-pillar[5]arene-based foldamer for ultrasensitive detection and separation of multi-analytes

In this study, a novel aggregation-induced emission supramolecular organic framework (AIE SOF) with ultrasensitive response, termed FSOF, was constructed using a tri-pillar[5]arene-based foldamer. Interestingly, benefiting from the noise signal shielding properties of FSOF as well as the competition between the cationπ and ππ interactions, the FSOF shows an ultrasensitive response for multi-analytes, such as Fe3+, Hg2+ and Cr3+. The limits of detection (LODs) of the FSOF for Fe3+, Hg2+ and Cr3+ are in the range of 9.40 × 10-10-1.86 × 10-9. More importantly, the xerogel of FSOF exhibits porous mesh structures, which could effect high-efficiency separation above metal ions from their aqueous solution, with adsorption percentages in the range 92.39-99.99%. In addition, by introducing metal ions into the FSOF, a series of metal ions coordinated supramolecular organic frameworks (MSOFs) were successfully constructed. Moreover, MSOFs show selective fluorescence "turn on" ultrasensitive detection CN- (LOD = 2.12 × 10-9) and H2PO4- (LOD = 1.78 × 10-9). This is a novel approach to construct SOFs through a tri-pillar[5]arene-based foldamer, and also provides a new way to achieve ultrasensitive detection and high-efficiency separation.

Melanin-dot-mediated delivery of metallacycle for NIR-II/photoacoustic dual-modal imaging-guided chemo-photothermal synergistic therapy

Discrete Pt(II) metallacycles have potential applications in biomedicine. Herein, we engineered a dual-modal imaging and chemo-photothermal therapeutic nano-agent 1 that incorporates discrete Pt(II) metallacycle 2 and fluorescent dye 3 (emission wavelength in the second near-infrared channel [NIR-II]) into multifunctional melanin dots with photoacoustic signal and photothermal features. Nano-agent 1 has a good solubility, biocompatibility, and stability in vivo. Both photoacoustic imaging and NIR-II imaging in vivo confirmed that 1 can effectively accumulate at tumor sites with good signal-to-background ratio and favorable distribution. Guided by precise dual-modal imaging, nano-agent 1 exhibits a superior antitumor performance and less severe side effects compared with a single treatment because of the high efficiency of the chemo-photothermal synergistic therapy. This study shows that nano-agent 1 provides a promising multifunctional theranostic platform for potential applications in biomedicine.

Metal-Organic Capsules with NADH Mimics as Switchable Selectivity Regulators for Photocatalytic Transfer Hydrogenation

Switchable selective hydrogenation among the groups in multifunctional compounds is challenging because selective hydrogenation is of great interest in the synthesis of fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals as a result of the importance of key intermediates. Herein, we report a new approach to highly selectively (>99%) reducing C═X (X = O, N) over the thermodynamically more favorable nitro groups locating the substrate in a metal-organic capsule containing NADH active sites. Within the capsule, the NADH active sites reduce the double bonds via a typical 2e^- hydride transfer hydrogenation, and the formed excited-state NAD⁺ mimics oxidize the reductant via two consecutive 1e^- processes to regenerate the NADH active sites under illumination. Outside the capsule, nitro groups are highly selectively reduced through a typical 1e^- hydrogenation. By combining photoinduced 1e^- transfer regeneration outside the cage, both 1e^- and 2e^- hydrogenation can be switched controllably by varying the concentrations of the substrates and the redox potential of electron donors. This promising alternative approach, which could proceed under mild reaction conditions and use easy-to-handle hydrogen donors with enhanced high selectivity toward different groups, is based on the localization and differentiation of the 2e^- and 1e^- hydrogenation pathways inside and outside the capsules, provides a deep comprehension of photocatalytic microscopic reaction processes, and will allow the design and optimization of catalysts. We demonstrate the advantage of this method over typical hydrogenation that involves specific activation via well-modified catalytic sites and present results on the high, well-controlled, and switchable selectivity for the hydrogenation of a variety of substituted and bifunctional aldehydes, ketones, and imines.

Spontaneous Supramolecular Polymerization Driven by Discrete Platinum Metallacycle-Based Host-Guest Complexation

Considerable progress in platinum metallacycle-based supramolecular polymerization has promoted the fabrication and application of supramolecular materials. However, despite recent advances, supramolecular polymers constructed through platinum metallacycle-based host-guest complexation remain rare because of the dynamics of platinum metallacycles. Here, we achieve linear supramolecular polymerization via platinum metallacycle-based host-guest complexation by following the design rule of suppressing the dynamics of the metallacycles. The establishment of the platinum metallacycle-based host-guest system and the realization of this type of supramolecular polymerization are expected to open opportunities for platinum metallacycle-based functional materials.
