Unconventional Method for Fabricating Valence Tautomeric Materials: Integrating Redox Center within a Metal-Organic Framework

Dual-radical-based molecular anisotropy and synergy effect of semi-conductivity and valence tautomerization in a photoswitchable coordination polymer

Organic radicals are widely used as linkers or ligands to synthesize molecular magnetic materials. However, studies regarding the molecular anisotropies of radical-based magnetic materials and their multifunctionalities are rare. Herein, a photoisomerizable diarylethene ligand was used to form {[Co^III(3,5-DTSQ^·-)(3,5-DTCat^2-)]₂(6F-DAE-py₂)}·3CH₃CN·H₂O (o-1·3CH₃CN·H₂O, 6F-DAE-py₂ = 1,2-bis(2-methyl-5-(4-pyridyl)-3-thienyl)perfluorocyclopentene), a valence-tautomeric (VT) coordination polymer. We directly observed dual radicals for a single crystal using high-field/-frequency (∼13.3 T and ∼360 GHz) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy along the c-axis, which was further confirmed by angle-dependent Q-band EPR spectroscopy. Moreover, a conductive anomaly close to the VT transition temperature was observed only when probes were attached at the ab plane of the single crystal, indicative of synergy between valence tautomerism and conductivity. Structural anisotropy studies and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that this synergy is due to electron transfer associated with valence tautomerism. This study presents the first example of dual-radical-based molecular anisotropy and charge-transfer-induced conductive anisotropy in a photoswitchable coordination polymer.

Magnetic and Dielectric Switchings Actuated by the Rotation of the Picoline Ligand in an Iron-Based Dinuclear Phase-Transition Complex

Multifunctional materials with switchable magnetic and dielectric properties are crucial for the development of memory and sensor devices. Herein, we report a methoxy-bridged dinuclear iron-pyridyl complex [Fe₂(4-picoline)₄(NCS)₄(μ-OCH₃)₂] (1), which shows simultaneous thermal-induced magnetic and dielectric switchings. Within the phase-transition temperature range, both magnetic switching and the dielectric anomaly were detected, in which the thermal hysteresis loops were 23 and 21 K, respectively. Detailed structural analyses revealed that these simultaneous switchings were rooted in the flexible rotatable ligands, which were actuated by readjusting the π-π intermolecular interactions between the pyridine ligands in the trans positions of the metal centers. These results were comprehensively investigated both experimentally and theoretically. This study presents a new guideline to control both the magnetic and dielectric properties of molecular complexes by external stimuli.

Thermally induced charge transfer in a quinoid-bridged linear Cu3 compound

Charge transfer always occurs in molecular valence tautomers, leading to the redistribution of electron density and exhibiting electrical, optical, and magnetic properties, and can be further controlled by multiple external stimuli such as temperature, light and electric field. The design of molecule-based materials capable of charge transfer remains a challenge. Herein, a linear Cu₃ compound [(CH₃)₃NCH₂CH₂Br]₂[Cu₃L₄(H₂O)₂] (H₂L = chloranilic acid) (1) with a multi-center donor-acceptor architecture was constructed using the redox-active chloranilic acid quinoid ligand. Temperature-dependent dielectric measurement was performed to capture the charge transfer valence tautomer transition because it is difficult to detect this transition by crystal structure and magnetism analysis. Temperature-dependent XPS and EPR further confirmed that the charge transfer valence tautomer transition is based on the Cu^II-L^2- to Cu^I-L^-˙ multi-center charge transfer. Thus, the present work builds a charge transfer compound with a multi-center donor-acceptor architecture and proves that dielectric measurement is a very effective means to detect charge transfer.

A series of dynamic single crystals of [MII(en)3]SO4 (M = Ni, Mn, and Cd) shows tunable dielectric properties and anisotropic thermal expansion

A series of dynamic single crystals with a chemical formula of [M^II(en)₃]SO₄ (en = ethylene and M^II = Ni^II, Mn^II, and Cd^II) was synthesized. As the temperature decreases, these materials exhibit dielectric switching in the vicinity of the phase transition point accompanied by anisotropic thermal expansion in the cell parameters as a consequence of the order-disorder structural change of SO2-4 in a cavity surrounded by five [M^II(en)₃]²⁺ complex cations. Because the variation of metal centers with different ionic radii changes the shape of the complex cation, which affects the distribution of hydrogen-bond interactions around the SO2-4, the dynamic motion of SO2-4 is substantially tuned. Correspondingly, the dielectric properties and anisotropic thermal expansion of materials were largely shifted, especially in the single crystals of [Mn^II(en)₃]SO₄, whose structural change is distinctly different from the crystals of Ni(II) and Cd(II). The detailed structural mechanism accounting for the different physical properties of these materials was discussed.

Discovery of Kinetic Effect in a Valence Tautomeric Cobalt-Dioxolene Complex

Two isostructural valence tautomeric (VT) complexes with different critical temperatures were prepared and fully investigated through a series of magnetic, structural, spectral, and differential scanning calorimetry evidence. The kinetic effect in the VT complex was observed for the first time through scan-rate-dependent studies and further validated by annealing tests.

One-Step versus Two-Step Valence Tautomeric Transitions in Tetraoxolene-Bridged Dinuclear Cobalt Compounds

The syntheses of valence tautomeric compounds with multistep transitions using new redox-active ligands are the long-term goal of the field of bistable materials. The redox-active tetraoxolene ligand, 2,7-di-tert-butylpyrene-4,5,9,10-tetraone (pyrene^Q-Q), is now developed to synthesize a pair of dinuclear compounds {[CoL₂]₂(pyrene^Sq-Sq)}[Co(CO)₄]₂·xCH₂Cl₂·2C₆H₅CH₃ (1, x = 2, L = 1,10-phenanthroline, phen; 2, x = 1.5, L = 2,2'-bipyridine, bpy). Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibilities and single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements indicate a partial one-step valence tautomeric transition for 1 and a rare two-step valence tautomeric transition for 2, respectively. DFT calculation results are consistent with the experimental data, revealing the correlation between thermodynamic parameters and the one-step/two-step valence tautomeric behaviors.

Tunable Synchronicity of Molecular Valence Tautomerism with Macroscopic Solid-Liquid Transition by Molecular Lattice Engineering

The combination of a cobalt-dioxolene core that exhibits valence tautomerism (VT) with pyridine-3,5-dicarboxylic acid functionalized with chains bearing two, four, or six oxyethylene units led to new complexes ConEGEspy (n = 2, 4, and 6). These complexes commonly form violet crystals of the low-spin (ls)-[Co^III (nEGEspy)₂ (3,6-DTBSQ)(3,6-DTBCat)] (ls-[Co^III ], 3,6-DTBSQ = 3,6-di-tert-butyl semiquinonato, 3,6-DTBCat = 3,6-di-tert-butyl catecholato). Interestingly, violet crystals of Co2EGEspy in the ls-[Co^III ] transitioned into a green liquid, accompanied by an almost complete VT shift (94 %) to the high-spin (hs)-[Co^II (nEGEspy)₂ (3,6-DTBSQ)₂ ] (hs-[Co^II ]) upon melting. In contrast, violet crystals of Co4EGEspy and Co6EGEspy in the ls-[Co^III ] exhibited partial VT (33 %) and only a 9.3 % VT shift after melting, respectively. These data demonstrate the tunability of the synchronicity of the molecular VT and macroscopic solid-liquid transitions by optimizing the tethered chains, thus establishing a new strategy for coupling bistable molecules with the macroscopic world.

Molecular Valence Tautomeric Metal Complexes for Chemosensing

Switchable valence tautomeric metal complexes have been long suggested for applications as chemosensors. However, no such molecular sensors have been yet reported. Here, we present a concept for sensing and the first prototype molecular sensor based on valence tautomeric cobalt-dioxolenes. A valence tautomeric cobalt-dioxolene complex [ls-Co^III(SQ^•)(Cat)(stypy)₂] ⇄ [hs-Co^II(SQ^•)₂(stypy)₂] 1 (ls = low spin, hs = high spin, Cat = 3,5-di-tert-butylcatecholate(2-), SQ = one-electron oxidized, benzosemiquinone(1-) form of Cat, stypy = trans-4-styrylpyridine) has been used as a molecular sensor. The lability of axial stypy ligands of 1 in solution allows us to exchange stypy ligands by dimethyl sulfoxide and simple pyridine analytes in a controllable way, which triggers colorimetric and magnetic responses.

Spin Crossover in a Series of Non-Hofmann-Type Fe(II) Coordination Polymers Based on [Hg(SeCN)3]- or [Hg(SeCN)4]2- Building Blocks

Self-assembly of [Hg(SeCN)₄]^2- tetrahedral building blocks, iron(II) ions, and a series of bis-monodentate pyridyl-type bridging ligands has afforded the new heterobimetallic Hg^II-Fe^II coordination polymers {Fe[Hg(SeCN)₃]₂(4,4'-bipy)₂}_n (1), {Fe[Hg(SeCN)₄](tvp)}_n (2), {Fe[Hg(SeCN)₃]₂(4,4'-azpy)₂}_n (3), {Fe[Hg(SeCN)₄](4,4'-azpy)(MeOH)}_n (4), {Fe[Hg(SeCN)₄](3,3'-bipy)}_n (5) and {Fe[Hg(SeCN)₄](3,3'-azpy)}_n (6) (4,4-bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine, tvp = trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene, 4,4'-azpy = 4,4'-azobispyridine, 3,3-bipy = 3,3'-bipyridine, 3,3'-azpy = 3,3'-azobispyridine). Single-crystal X-ray analyses show that compounds 1 and 3 display a two-dimensional robust sheet structure made up of infinite linear [(FeL)_n]²ⁿ⁺ (L = 4,4'-bipy or 4,4'-azpy) chains linked by in situ formed {[Hg(L)(SeCN)₃]₂}^2- anionic dimeric bridges. Complexes 2 and 4-6 define three-dimensional networks with different topological structures, indicating, in combination with complexes 1 and 3, that the polarity, length, rigidity, and conformation of the bridging organic ligand play important roles in the structural nature of the products reported here. The magnetic properties of complexes 1 and 2 show the occurrence of temperature- and light-induced spin crossover (SCO) properties, while complexes 4-6 are in the high-spin state at all temperatures. The current results provide a new route for the design and synthesis of new SCO functional materials with non-Hofmann-type traditional structures.

Supramolecular Chemistry: Host-Guest Molecular Complexes

In recent times, researchers have emphasized practical approaches for capturing coordinated and selective guest entrap. The physisorbed nanoporous supramolecular complexes have been widely used to restrain various guest species on compact supporting surfaces. The host-guest (HG) interactions in two-dimensional (2D) permeable porous linkages are growing expeditiously due to their future applications in biocatalysis, separation technology, or nanoscale patterning. The different crystal-like nanoporous network has been acquired to enclose and trap guest molecules of various dimensions and contours. The host centers have been lumped together via noncovalent interactions (such as hydrogen bonds, van der Waals (vdW) interactions, or coordinate bonds). In this review article, we enlighten and elucidate recent progress in HG chemistry, explored via scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). We summarize the synthesis, design, and characterization of typical HG structural design examined on various substrates, under ambient surroundings at the liquid-solid (LS) interface, or during ultrahigh vacuum (UHV). We emphasize isoreticular complexes, vibrant HG coordination, or hosts functional cavities responsive to the applied stimulus. Finally, we critically discuss the significant challenges in advancing this developing electrochemical field.

Cobalt(II)-dianthracene Frameworks: Assembly, Exfoliation and Properties

Metal-organic frameworks containing responsive organic linkers are attractive for potential applications in sensors and molecular devices. Herein we report three cobalt(II) phosphonates incorporating responsive dianthracene linkers, namely, Co₂ (amp₂ H₂ )₂ (H₂ O)₄  ⋅ 6H₂ O (MDAF-1), Co₂ (amp₂ )(H₂ O)₄  ⋅ 2H₂ O (MDAF-2) and Co(amp₂ H₂ ) ⋅ 2H₂ O ⋅ 0.5DMF (MDAF-3), where amp₂ H₄ is pre-photodimerized 9-anthrylmethylphosphonic acid. MDAF-1 shows a layer structure in which dinuclear Co₂ (PO₃ H)₂ units are inter-connected by dianthracene ligands. In MDAF-2 and MDAF-3, inorganic chains of corner-sharing {CoO₄ } (or {CoO₆ }) and {PO₃ C} are cross-linked by dianthracene ligands into 3D frameworks. All compounds underwent thermo-induced phase transitions, first the de-solvation and then the de-dimerization of dianthracene (as well as the release of the remaining solvent molecules for MDAF-2 and -3), associated with magnetic changes. MDAF-1 can be exfoliated into single-layer nanosheets in water which show light-triggered luminescent changes.

Controlling dynamic magnetic properties of coordination clusters via switchable electronic configuration

Large-sized coordination clusters have emerged as a new class of molecular materials in which many metal atoms and organic ligands are integrated to synergize their properties. As dynamic magnetic materials, such a combination of multiple components functioning as responsive units has many advantages over monometallic systems due to the synergy between constituent components. Understanding the nature of dynamic magnetism at an atomic level is crucial for realizing the desired properties, designing responsive molecular nanomagnets, and ultimately unlocking the full potential of these nanomagnets for practical applications. Therefore, this review article highlights the recent development of large-sized coordination clusters with dynamic magnetic properties. These dynamic properties can be associated with spin transition, electron transfer, and valence fluctuation through their switchable electronic configurations. Subsequently, the article also highlights specialized characterization techniques with different timescales for supporting switching mechanisms, chemistry, and properties. Afterward, we present an overview of coordination clusters (such as cyanide-bridged and non-cyanide assemblies) with dynamic magnetic properties, namely, spin transition and electron transfer in magnetically bistable systems and mixed-valence complexes. In particular, the response mechanisms of coordination clusters are highlighted using representative examples with similar transition principles to gain insights into spin state and mixed-valence chemistry. In conclusion, we present possible solutions to challenges related to dynamic magnetic clusters and potential opportunities for a wide range of intelligent next-generation devices.

Large-Amplitude Thermal Vibration-Coupled Valence Tautomeric Transition Observed in a Conductive One-Dimensional Rhodium-Dioxolene Complex

The exploration of dynamic molecular crystals is a fascinating theme for materials scientists owing to their fundamental science and potential application to molecular devices. Herein, a one-dimensional (1D) rhodium-dioxolene complex is reported that exhibits drastic changes in properties with the phase transition. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that the room-temperature (RT) phase is in a mixed-valence state, and therefore, the drastic changes originate from the mixed-valence state appearing in the RT phase. Another notable feature is that the mean square displacements of the rhodium atoms along the 1D chain dramatically increased in the RT phase, indicating a large-amplitude vibration of the Rh-Rh bonds. From these results, a possible mechanism for the appearance of the mixed-valence state in the RT phase was proposed based on the thermal electron transfer from the 1D d-band to the semiquinonato π* orbital coupled with the large-amplitude vibration of the Rh-Rh bonds.

Polytorsional-amide/carboxylates-directed Cd(ii) coordination polymers exhibiting multi-functional sensing behaviors

By rational assembly of polytorsional-amide [N,N′-bis(4-methylenepyridin-4-yl)-1,4-naphthalene dicarboxamide (L)] and polytorsional-carboxylates [H₂ADI = adipic acid, H₂PIM = pimelic acid, H₂SUB = suberic acid], three new Cd-based coordination polymers (CPs) C₃₀H₃₀CdN₄O₇ (1), C₃₁H₃₂CdN₄O₇ (2) and C_31.03H_30.55CdCl_0.24N₄O_5.52 (3) were successfully synthesized. CPs 1–2 and 3 are 2D networks and a 3D framework, which all display 3,5-connected topologies with different structural details. The effects of carboxylates with different carbon chains on the structure of the complexes were studied. Fluorescence experiments show that CPs 1–3 have good multi-functional sensing ability for metal cations (Fe³⁺), anions (MnO₄⁻, CrO₄²⁻, Cr₂O₇²⁻) and organochlorine pesticides (2,6-dichloro-4-nitroamine) with good anti-interference and recyclable characteristics. The possible sensing mechanism is also investigated in detail.

Metal/Metal Redox Isomerism Governed by Configuration

A pair of diastereomeric dinuclear complexes, [Tp′(CO)BrW{μ‐η²‐C,C′‐κ²‐S,P‐C₂(PPh₂)S}Ru(η⁵‐C₅H₅)(PPh₃)], in which W and Ru are bridged by a phosphinyl(thiolato)alkyne in a side‐on carbon P,S‐chelate coordination mode, were synthesized, separated and fully characterized. Even though the isomers are similar in their spectroscopic properties and redox potentials, the like‐isomer is oxidized at W while the unlike‐isomer is oxidized at Ru, which is proven by IR, NIR and EPR‐spectroscopy supported by spectro‐electrochemistry and computational methods. The second oxidation of the complexes was shown to take place at the metal left unaffected in the first redox step. Finally, the tipping point could be realized in the unlike isomer of the electronically tuned thiophenolate congener [Tp′(CO)(PhS)W{μ‐η²‐C,C′‐κ²‐S,P‐C₂(PPh₂)S}Ru(η⁵‐C₅H₅)‐(PPh₃)], in which valence trapped W^III/Ru^II and W^II/Ru^III cationic species are at equilibrium.

A Trinuclear Cobalt-Organic Framework: Solvatochromic Sensor towards CH2 Cl2 , and its Derivative as an Anode of Lithium-Ion Batteries with High Performance

Here, a porous cobalt-organic framework with pillared layer structures, namely [Co₃ OBA₃ PTD(H₂ O)₂ ⋅ 2 DMA⋅H₂ O]_n (1, H₂ OBA=4,4'-oxybis(benzoic acid); PTD=6-(pyridin-4-yl)-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine), was fabricated by using cobalt trinuclear nodes, low-cost carboxylic linker, and accessible nitrogen heterocyclic ligands. This compound exhibited a highly efficient solvatochromism towards CH₂ Cl₂ within one minute and can be used 200 times at least. The corresponding dropper detector was assembled as a practical sensor. Meanwhile, the porous Co₃ O₄ was obtained by a simple but effective annealing treatment. Electrochemical measurements confirm that this Co₃ O₄ material derived from compound 1 shows high and stable lithium storage capabilities (1081.75 mA h g^-1 at 200 mA g^-1 after 115 cycles) and excellent rate properties.

Pillar-Layered Metal-Organic Frameworks Based on a Hexaprismane [Co6(μ3-OH)6] Cluster: Structural Modulation and Catalytic Performance in Aerobic Oxidation Reaction

Embedding a functional metal-oxo cluster within the matrix of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is a feasible approach for the development of advanced porous materials. Herein, three isoreticular pillar-layered MOFs (Co₆-MOF-1-3) based on a unique [Co₆(μ₃-OH)₆] cluster were designed, synthesized, and structurally characterized. For these Co₆-MOFs, tuning of the framework backbone was facilitated due to the existence of second ligands, which results in adjustable apertures (8.8 to 13.4 Å) and high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surfaces (1896-2401 m² g^-1). As the [Co₆(μ₃-OH)₆] cluster has variable valences, these MOFs were then utilized as heterogeneous catalysts for the selective oxidation of styrene and benzyl alcohol, showing high conversion (>90%) and good selectivity. The selectivity of styrene to styrene oxide surpassed 80% and that of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde was up to 98%. The calculated TOF values show that the increase of reaction rate is positively correlated with the enlargement of pore sizes in these MOFs. Further, a stability test and cycling experiment proved that these Co₆-MOFs have well-observed stability and recyclability.

Twist and sliding dynamics between interpenetrated frames in Ti-MOF revealing high proton conductivity

We report the design and synthesis of a titanium catecholate framework, MOF-217, comprised of 2,4,6-tri(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-1,3,5-triazine (TDHT) and isolated TiO6 clusters, with 2-fold interpenetrated srs topology. The dynamics of the organic linker, breaking the C 3h symmetry, allowed for reversible twist and sliding between interpenetrated frames upon temperature change and the inclusion of small molecules. Introduction of 28 wt% imidazole into the pores of MOF-217, 28% Im-in-MOF-217, resulted in four orders of magnitude increase in proton conductivity, due to the appropriate accommodation of imidazole molecules and their proton transfer facilitated by the H-bond to the MOF structure across the pores. This MOF-based proton conductor can be operated at 100 °C with a proton conductivity of 1.1 × 10-3 S cm-1, standing among the best performing anhydrous MOF proton conductors at elevated temperature. The interframe dynamics represents a unique feature of MOFs that can be accessed in the future design of proton conductors.

Long-Sought Redox Isomerization of the Europium(III/II) Complex Achieved by Molecular Reorientation at the Interface

Redox isomerism, that is, the change of a metal cation valence state in organic complexes, can find promising applications in multistable molecular switches for various molecular electronic devices. However, despite a large number of studies devoted to such processes in organic complexes of multivalent lanthanides, redox-isomeric transformations were never observed for europium. In the present work, we demonstrate the unique case of redox isomerization of Eu(III)/Eu(II) complexes on the example of Eu double-decker octa-n-butoxyphthalocyaninate (Eu[(BuO)₈Pc]₂) under ambient conditions (air and room temperature). It is shown that assumption of the face-on orientation on the aqueous subphase surface, in which two of each phthalocyanine decks in Eu[(BuO)₈Pc]₂ are located in different media (air and water), leads to the intramolecular electron transfer that results in the formation of a divalent Eu(II) cation in the complex. Lateral compression of the thus-formed monolayer results in the reorientation of bisphthalocyaninate to the edge-on state, in which the ligands can be considered identical, and occurrence of the reverse redox-isomeric transformation into the complex with a trivalent Eu cation. Both redox-isomeric states were directly observed by X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy in ultrathin films formed under different conditions.

Combining unsaturated metal sites and narrow pores within a Co(ii)-based MOF towards CO2 separation and transformation

Combining unsaturated metal sites and narrow pores within one framework, a unique Co^II-MOF have been prepared, which reveals excellent selective CO₂ uptake over N₂ and CH₄, and good performances in catalytic CO₂ conversion to cyclic carbonates.

9,9′-Spirobifluorene based zinc coordination polymers: a study on linker geometry and topology

We report four Zn-based coordination polymers (CPs), synthesized from three spirobifluorene (SBF) tetracarboxylate ligands, possessing different topologies and dimensionalities.
