Anchored Ligands Facilitate Efficient B-Site Doping in Metal Halide Perovskites

Crystallization Kinetics of Hybrid Perovskite Solar Cells

Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) are considered ideal photovoltaic materials due to their variable crystal material composition and excellent photoelectric properties. However, this variability in composition leads to complex crystallization processes in the manufacturing of Metal halide perovskite (MHP) thin films, resulting in reduced crystallinity and subsequent performance loss in the final device. Thus, understanding and controlling the crystallization dynamics of perovskite materials are essential for improving the stability and performance of PSCs (Perovskite Solar Cells). To investigate the impact of crystallization characteristics on the properties of MHP films and identify corresponding modulation strategies, we primarily discuss the relevant aspects of MHP crystallization kinetics, systematically summarize theoretical methods, and outline modulation techniques for MHP crystallization, including solution engineering, additive engineering, and component engineering, which helps highlight the prospects and current challenges in perovskite crystallization kinetics.

Green synthesis of CaxLa1-xMnO3 with modulation of mesoporous and vacancies for efficient low concentration phosphate adsorption

Phosphate concentrations in eutrophic surface waters are usually low, and efficient removal of low concentration phosphate remains a challenge. In this study, Ca-doped LaMnO3 synthesized at doping ratios, designated as CaxLa1-xMnO3 (x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.7), were compared. It was found that, the adsorption capacity of Ca0.4La0.6MnO3 material reached 63.01 mg/g at pH = 5, increased by 63.6% over the undoped LaMnO3 perovskite. For long-term adsorption, Ca0.4La0.6MnO3 could constantly adsorb phosphate to avoid phosphate accumulation (<0.05 mg/L). This proves that Ca0.4La0.6MnO3 has the ability to control dynamic water eutrophication. Characterization and density functional theory results confirmed that CaxLa1-xMnO3 can increase the content of mesopores and oxygen vacancies, providing additional active sites. This reduces the adsorption energy of the La site, promotes electron transfer, and increases its affinity. It provides a new method for removing low-concentration phosphates.

Room-temperature efficient photoluminescence mechanism of indium doping lead-free colloidal MA3Bi2Br9 quantum dots solution

Lead halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs) are promising candidates for future optoelectronic devices due to their excellent photonic and electronic properties. However, poor stability and toxicity problems limit their further development. This work demonstrates the doping tactics to boost the optical properties of lead-free colloidal MA3Bi2Br9 QDs, the indium ion (In3+) doping presented herein is found to be effective in improving the photoluminescence (PL) properties of MA3Bi2Br9 (CH3NH2 = MA) QDs without alerting their favorable electronic structure. It has been elucidated by microscopy and diffraction results that the In3+ doping optimizes the QDs solution octahedron structure, and the PL red-shifted phenomenon coincides well with the analogous red-shifted obtained in the ultraviolet/visible (UV-Vis) absorption spectroscopy, which is due to the quantum confinement effect. And the nanosecond transient absorption (ns-TA) spectroscopy elucidates that the enhanced radiative recombination process contributes to enhanced stability and luminescence. The photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of MA3Bi2Br9 QDs is increased by 60.7%. This work offers a valid strategy for improving the quality of the lead-free perovskite QDs.

Electronic State Engineering in Perovskite-Cerium-Composite Nanocrystals toward Enhanced Triplet Annihilation Upconversion

Wavelength conversion based on hybrid inorganic-organic sensitized triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC) is promising for applications such as photovoltaics, light-emitting-diodes, photocatalysis, additive manufacturing, and bioimaging. The efficiency of TTA-UC depends on the population of triplet excitons involved in triplet energy transfer (TET), the driving force in TET, and the coupling strength between the donor and acceptor. Consequently, achieving highly efficient TTA-UC necessitates the precise control of the electronic states of inorganic donors. However, conventional covalently bonded nanocrystals (NCs) face significant challenges in this regard. Herein, a novel strategy to exert control over electronic states is proposed, thereby enhancing TET and TTA-UC by incorporating ionic-bonded CsPbBr3 and lanthanide Ce3+ ions into composite NCs. These composite-NCs exhibit high photoluminescence quantum yield, extended single-exciton lifetime, quantum confinement, and uplifted energy levels. This engineering strategy of electronic states engendered a comprehensive impact, augmenting the population of triplet excitons participating in the TET process, enhancing coupling strength and the driving force, ultimately leading to an unconventional, dopant concentration-dependent nonlinear enhancement of UC efficiency. This work not only advances fundamental understanding of hybrid TTA-UC but also opens a door for the creation of other ionic-bonded composite NCs with tunable functionalities, promising innovations for next-generation optoelectronic applications.

Centimeter-Size Single Crystals of Halide Perovskite Photoferroelectric Solid Solution with Ultrahigh Pyroelectricity Boosted Photodetection

Photoferroelectrics, especially emerging halide perovskite ferroelectrics, have motivated tremendous interests owing to their fascinating bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) and cross-coupled functionalities. However, solid solutions of halide perovskite photoferroelectrics with controllable structure and enhanced performance are scarcely explored. Herein, through mixing cage cation, a homogeneous halide perovskite photoferroelectric PA2 FAx MA1-x Pb2 Br7 solid solution (PA, FA and MA are CH3 CH2 CH2 NH3 + , NH2 CHNH2 + and CH3 NH3 + , 0≤x≤1) has been developed, which demonstrates tunable Curie temperature in a wide range of 263-323 K and excellent optoelectrical features. As the component adjusted to x=0.7, the bulk crystal demonstrates ultrahigh pyroelectric coefficient up to 1.48 μC cm-2  K-1 around room temperature. Strikingly, benefiting from the light-induced pyroelectricity and remarkable BPVE, a self-powered and sensitive photodetector based solid solution crystals with boosted responsivity and detectivity over than 1300 % has been achieved. This pioneering work sheds light on the exploration of photoferroelectric solid solutions towards high-performance photoelectronic devices.

Electrochemical Doping of Halide Perovskites by Noble Metal Interstitial Cations

Metal halide perovskites are an attractive class of semiconductors, but it has proven difficult to control their electronic doping by conventional strategies due to screening and compensation by mobile ions or ionic defects. Noble-metal interstitials represent an under-studied class of extrinsic defects that plausibly influence many perovskite-based devices. In this work, doping of metal halide perovskites is studied by electrochemically formed Au⁺ interstitial ions, combining experimental data on devices with a computational analysis of Au⁺ interstitial defects based on density functional theory (DFT). Analysis suggests that Au⁺ cations can be easily formed and migrate through the perovskite bulk via the same sites as iodine interstitials (I_i ⁺ ). However, whereas I_i ⁺ compensates n-type doping by electron capture, the noble-metal interstitials act as quasi-stable n-dopants. Experimentally, voltage-dependent, dynamic doping by current density-time (J-t), electrochemical impedance, and photoluminescence measurements are characterized. These results provide deeper insight into the potential beneficial and detrimental impacts of metal electrode reactions on long-term performance of perovskite photovoltaic and light-emitting diodes, as well as offer an alternative doping explanation for the valence switching mechanism of halide-perovskite-based neuromorphic and memristive devices.

Inductive Effect of Lewis Acidic Dopants on the Band Levels of Perovskite for a Photocatalytic Reaction

Band-edge modulation of halide perovskites as photoabsorbers plays significant roles in the application of photovoltaic and photochemical systems. Here, Lewis acidity of dopants (M) as the new descriptor of engineering the band-edge position of the perovskite is investigated in the gradiently doped perovskite along the core-to-surface (CsPbBr₃-CsPb_1-xM_xBr₃). Reducing M-bromide bond strength with an increase in hardness of acidic M increases the electron ability of basic Br, thus strengthening the Pb-Br orbital coupling in M-Pb-Br, noted as the inductive effect of dopants. Especially, the highly hard Lewis acidic Mg localized in the outer position of the perovskite induces the increase of work function and then shifts band edge upward along the core-to-surface of the perovskite. Thus, charge separation driven by the dopant-induced internal electric field induces the slow annihilation of the excited holes, improving the slow aromatic C_sp³-H dissociation in the photocatalytic oxidation process by ∼211% (491.39 μmol g^-1 h^-1) enhancements, compared with undoped nanocrystals.

Stabilization of Lead-Reduced Metal Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals by High-Entropy Alloying

Colloidal metal halide perovskite (MHP) nanocrystals (NCs) are an emerging class of fluorescent quantum dots (QDs) for next-generation optoelectronics. A great hurdle hindering practical applications, however, is their high lead content, where most attempts addressing the challenge in the literature compromised the material's optical performance or colloidal stability. Here, we present a postsynthetic approach that stabilizes the lead-reduced MHP NCs through high-entropy alloying. Upon doping the NCs with multiple elements in considerably high concentrations, the resulting high-entropy perovskite (HEP) NCs remain to possess excellent colloidal stability and narrowband emission, with even higher photoluminescence (PL) quantum yields, η_PL, and shorter fluorescence lifetimes, τ_PL. The formation of multiple phases containing mixed interstitial and doping phases is suggested by X-ray crystallography. Importantly, the crystalline phases with higher degrees of lattice expansion and lattice contraction can be stabilized upon high-entropy alloying. We show that the lead content can be approximately reduced by up to 55% upon high-entropy alloying. The findings reported here make one big step closer to the commercialization of perovskite NCs.

Efficient Photoluminescence of Manganese-Doped Two-Dimensional Chiral Alloyed Perovskites

In this work, we introduced chiral cations into the achiral two-position layered perovskite system for the first time to form an alloyed system that still retains a clear layered structure. In addition, in order to explore the potential photoelectric properties of the alloyed system, manganese ions were doped into the alloyed system. The XRD pattern shows that the steady-state absorption and emission spectra of the alloyed system have a large structural distance, while the doped manganese system exhibits a two-color photoluminescence phenomenon. In addition, combined with time-resolved fluorescence and testing, the photoluminescence characteristics and ultralong lifetime of Mn-doped samples were further characterized. The exciton band structure of the lead halide perovskite framework can be adjusted through this design strategy. Mn²⁺ ions can form characteristic energy levels in the host system and then energy transfer of excitons occurs, which is of great significance for the development of new functional and high-efficiency photoluminescent materials.

A review on advances in doping with alkali metals in halide perovskite materials

Recent progress in doping of halide perovskite materials (HPM) by using targeted elements has provided a dimension beyond structural and compositional modification, for achieving desired properties and resulting device performance. Herein doping of alkali metal ions (Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, and Cs+) in three-dimensional HPM is reviewed to lay a particular focus on advances in synthesis, doping-induced changes in optical and electrical properties, and their optoelectronic applications. The introduction of alkali metals in HPM shows an effective route for improved morphology, suppressed ion migration, reduction in non-radiative recombination, passivation of bulk and interface defects, and increased thermal stability. In the end, we provide our perspective that the effect of alkali metal incorporation on the efficiency and stability of HPM should be further investigated via in-situ characterization methods and doped HPM should be considered for more functional applications.

Efficient Zn-Alloyed Low-Toxicity Quasi-Two-Dimensional Pure-Red Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes

Metal halide perovskites have attracted extensive attention in next-generation solid-state lighting and displays due to their fascinating optoelectronic properties. However, the toxicity of lead (Pb) impedes their practical application. Herein, we report an efficient Zn-alloyed quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) pure-red perovskite light-emitting device (PeLED) by introducing zinc ions (Zn²⁺) into the perovskite lattice and partially substituting Pb²⁺. The substitution of Zn²⁺ is confirmed by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering, and transmission electron microscopy measurements. In addition, the vacancy defect density of Pb and the halogen is reduced by the introduction of Zn²⁺ in the PEA₂(Cs_0.3MA_0.7)₂(Zn_xPb_1-x)₃I₁₀ perovskite system, which leads to a more ordered crystal orientation, compact morphology, and increased photoluminescence quantum efficiency. Benefiting from the improved photoelectric properties, a maximum EQE of 9.5% and a luminescence of 453 cd m^-2 are achieved for the Zn-alloyed PeLEDs, with a maximum emission peak of 658 nm and stable electroluminescence spectra under various applied biases.

The metal doping strategy in all inorganic lead halide perovskites: synthesis, physicochemical properties, and optoelectronic applications

All inorganic perovskites CsPbX₃ (X = Cl, Br, I), rising stars of optical materials, have shown promising application prospects in optoelectronic and photovoltaic fields. However, some open issues still exist in these perovskites, like poor long-term stability, inevitable intrinsic defects and much nonradiative recombination, which greatly weakens their optical capability and seriously hinders their further development. The metal doping strategy, through the partial substitution of foreign ions for native ions, has gradually become an effective method for significantly enhancing the comprehensive properties of CsPbX₃. Whereas some previous studies have reported the impressive properties of metal-doped CsPbX₃, there is still a lack of a comprehensive review on the influences of metal doping on CsPbX₃. In this review, we aim to provide a systematic review of the latest achievements in metal-doped CsPbX₃, which focuses on their synthetic methods and the positive effects of metal doping on structure, optical properties, morphology control, carrier behavior and related optoelectronic and photovoltaic devices. Finally, we put forward a few opportunities and challenges about the further investigation of metal-doped perovskites, which may help researchers explore new research directions.

Recent Advances in Ligand Design and Engineering in Lead Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals

Lead halide perovskite (LHP) nanocrystals (NCs) have recently garnered enhanced development efforts from research disciplines owing to their superior optical and optoelectronic properties. These materials, however, are unlike conventional quantum dots, because they possess strong ionic character, labile ligand coverage, and overall stability issues. As a result, the system as a whole is highly dynamic and can be affected by slight changes of particle surface environment. Specifically, the surface ligand shell of LHP NCs has proven to play imperative roles throughout the lifetime of a LHP NC. Recent advances in engineering and understanding the roles of surface ligand shells from initial synthesis, through postsynthetic processing and device integration, finally to application performances of colloidal LHP NCs are covered here.

Ambient Condition Mg2+ Doping Producing Highly Luminescent Green- and Violet-Emitting Perovskite Nanocrystals with Reduced Toxicity and Enhanced Stability

The lack of long-term stability, the presence of toxic lead, and a low photoluminescence (PL) efficiency are the major obstacles to the commercialization of lead-halide perovskite-based optoelectronic and photovoltaic devices. Herein we report a facile ambient condition doping protocol that addresses all three issues of the CsPbX₃ perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) to a substantial extent. We show that the room-temperature treatment of these NCs with MgX₂ results in the partial (18-23%) replacement of toxic lead, enhances the PL quantum yield of green-emitting CsPbBr₃ (to ∼100% from ∼51%) and violet-emitting CsPbCl₃ NCs (to ∼79% from ∼1%), and improves the stability under ambient conditions and in the presence of light and a polar solvent. Ultrafast pump-probe and temperature-dependent PL studies reveal that curing of the intrinsic structural disorder, introduction of some shallow energy levels close to the conduction band edge, and effective passivation of the halide deficiency contribute to the improved properties of the doped systems.
