Synthesis and Properties of a Compositional Series of MIL-53(Al) Metal-Organic Framework Crystal-Glass Composites

Upcycling of post-consumer polyethylene terephthalate bottles into aluminum-based metal-organic framework adsorbents for efficient orthophosphate removal

2-Phosphonobutane-1,2,4,-tricarboxylic acid (PBTC) is an orthophosphate compound widely used as an antiscalant chemical and corrosion inhibitor in manufacturing. However, PBTC poses persistent environmental concerns due to its stability and resistance to conventional water treatment. In addressing the issues of PBTC in aquatic systems, Al-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been developed and applied as sustainable adsorbents. The materials are synthesized from terephthalic acid (TPA) linkers derived from upcycling products of post-consumer polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles. The PET-derived linker was prepared using alkaline hydrolysis followed by acidification and employed in forming MIL-53 (Al), with a comparative assessment against the corresponding MOFs made from commercial-grade TPA. The structures and properties of the materials were characterized with microscopic and spectroscopic methods. The synthesized adsorbents achieved a phosphate adsorption capacity of 826 mg/g at pH 5, with kinetics fitting a pseudo-second-order model and isotherm patterns aligning with Langmuir, Freundlich, and Sips models, indicative of diverse adsorption on heterogeneous surfaces. The results highlight the role of electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding mechanisms in PBTC adsorption. The eco-friendly materials with high adsorption performance offer an innovative route for sustainable waste management and water purification.

Loading and thermal behaviour of ZIF-8 metal-organic framework-inorganic glass composites

Here we describe the synthesis of a compositional series of metal-organic framework crystalline-inorganic glass composites (MOF-CIGCs) containing ZIF-8 and an inorganic phosphate glass, 20Na2O-10NaCl-70P2O5, to expand the library of host matrices for metal-organic frameworks. By careful selection of the inorganic glass component, a relatively high loading of ZIF-8 (70 wt%) was achieved, which is the active component of the composite. A Zn⋯O-P interfacial bond, previously identified in similar composites/hybrid blends, was suggested by analysis of the total scattering pair distribution function data. Additionally, CO2 and N2 sorption and variable-temperature PXRD experiments were performed to assess the composites' properties.

Designing Dual-Responsive Drug Delivery Systems: The Role of Phase Change Materials and Metal-Organic Frameworks

Stimuli-responsive drug delivery systems (DDSs) offer precise control over drug release, enhancing therapeutic efficacy and minimizing side effects. This review focuses on DDSs that leverage the unique capabilities of phase change materials (PCMs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to achieve controlled drug release in response to pH and temperature changes. Specifically, this review highlights the use of a combination of lauric and stearic acids as PCMs that melt slightly above body temperature, providing a thermally responsive mechanism for drug release. Additionally, this review delves into the properties of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), a stable MOF under physiological conditions that decomposes in acidic environments, thus offering pH-sensitive drug release capabilities. The integration of these materials enables the fabrication of complex structures that encapsulate drugs within ZIF-8 or are enveloped by PCM layers, ensuring that drug release is tightly controlled by either temperature or pH levels, or both. This review provides comprehensive insights into the core design principles, material selections, and potential biomedical applications of dual-stimuli responsive DDSs, highlighting the future directions and challenges in this innovative field.

Hierarchical porous amorphous metal-organic frameworks constructed from ZnO/MOF glass composites

For the first time, hierarchical porous amorphous metal-organic frameworks (HP-aMOFs) containing ultramicropores, micropores, and mesopores were synthesized by etching a composite of MOF glass (agZIF-76) and ZnO using ammonia. These materials show potential applications in the adsorption of C2 hydrocarbons.

Effective C4 Separation by Zeolite Metal-Organic Framework Composite Membranes

Inorganic zeolites have excellent molecular sieving properties, but they are difficult to process into macroscopic structures. In this work, we use metal-organic framework (MOF) glass as substrates to engineer the interface with inorganic zeolites, and then assemble the discrete crystalline zeolite powders into monolithic structures. The zeolites are well dispersed and stabilized within the MOF glass matrix, and the monolith has satisfactory mechanical stabilities for membrane applications. We demonstrate the effective separation performance of the membrane for 1,3-butadiene (C4H6) from other C4 hydrocarbons, which is a crucial and challenging separation in the chemical industry. The membrane achieves a high permeance of C4H6 (693.00±21.83 GPU) and a high selectivity over n-butene, n-butane, isobutene, and isobutane (9.72, 9.94, 10.31, and 11.94, respectively). This strategy opens up new possibilities for developing advanced membrane materials for difficult hydrocarbon separations.

A Short Review of Advances in MOF Glass Membranes for Gas Adsorption and Separation

The phenomenon of melting in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has recently garnered attention. Crystalline MOF materials can be transformed into an amorphous glassy state through melt-quenching treatment. The resulting MOF glass structure eliminates grain boundaries and retains short-range order while exhibiting long-range disorder. Based on these properties, it emerges as a promising candidate for high-performance separation membranes. MOF glass membranes exhibit permanent and accessible porosity, allowing for selective adsorption of different gas species. This review summarizes the melting mechanism of MOFs and explores the impact of ligands and metal ions on glassy MOFs. Additionally, it presents an analysis of the diverse classes of MOF glass composites, outlining their structures and properties, which are conducive to gas adsorption and separation. The absence of inter-crystalline defects in the structures, coupled with their distinctive mechanical properties, renders them highly promising for industrial gas separation applications. Furthermore, this review provides a summary of recent research on MOF glass composite membranes for gas adsorption and separation. It also addresses the challenges associated with membrane production and suggests future research directions.

Ultrasensitive detection of zearalenone based on electrochemiluminescent immunoassay with Zr-MOF nanoplates and Au@MoS2 nanoflowers

In this work, an effective competitive-type electrochemiluminescence (ECL) immunosensor was constructed for zearalenone determination by using Zr-MOF nanoplates as the ECL luminophore and Au@MoS2 nanoflowers as the substrate material. Zr-MOF have an ultra-thin sheet-like structure that accelerates the transfer of electrons, ions and co-reactant intermediates, which exhibited strong and stable anodic luminescence. The three-dimensional Au@MoS2 nanoflowers would form a thin film modification layer on the glassy carbon electrode (GCE). And its good electrical conductivity and higher specific surface area utilization further improving the sensitivity of the ECL immunosensor. Under the optimized conditions, the proposed immunosensor exhibited satisfactory stability, sensitivity and accuracy, and its ECL signal was proportional to the logarithm of ZEN concentration (0.0001-100 ng/mL) and the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.034 pg/mL. In addition, the results of recovery experiment acquired for wheat flour and pig urine samples further proved the feasibility of the immunosensor for the detection of real samples, indicating its potential for ultrasensitive detection of ZEN.

Thermally activated structural phase transitions and processes in metal-organic frameworks

The structural knowledge of metal-organic frameworks is crucial to the understanding and development of new efficient materials for industrial implementation. This review classifies and discusses recent advanced literature reports on phase transitions that occur during thermal treatments on metal-organic frameworks and their characterisation. Thermally activated phase transitions and procceses are classified according to the temperaturatures at which they occur: high temperature (reversible and non-reversible) and low temperature. In addition, theoretical calculations and modelling approaches employed to better understand these structural phase transitions are also reviewed.

Unveiling the MIL-53(Al) MOF: Tuning Photoluminescence and Structural Properties via Volatile Organic Compounds Interactions

MIL-53(Al) is a metal-organic framework (MOF) with unique properties, including structural flexibility, thermal stability, and luminescence. Its ability to adsorb volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and water vapor makes it a promising platform for sensing applications. This study investigated the adsorption mechanism of MIL-53(Al) with different VOCs, including ketones, alcohols, aromatics, and water molecules, focusing on structural transformations due to pore size variation and photoluminescence properties. The reported results assess MIL-53(Al) selectivity towards different VOCs and provide insights into their fundamental properties and potential applications in sensing.

Facilitating Proton Coupled Electron Transfer Reaction through the Interfacial Micro Electric Field with Fe─N4 ─C in FeMOFs Glass

The proton-coupled electron transfer(PCET) reaction plays a crucial role in the chemical transformation process andhas become one of the most concerned elementary reactions. However, the complex kinetics of PCET reaction, which requires the simultaneous transfer of protons and electrons, leads to the dilemma that thermodynamics and kinetics cannot bebalanced and restricts its further development. In this, an interface micro-electric field (IMEF) basedon Fe─N4 in FeMOFs (Fe-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks) glass is designed tosynchronize proton/electron interface behavior for the first time to realizeefficient PCET reaction and optimize reaction thermodynamics and kinetics. The IMEF facilitates the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes, and accelerates Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle. Driven by near-surface electric field force, the protons near surfacemigrate to Fe sites and participate in Fe(IV)═O formation and reaction, lowering the reaction energy barrier. Based on the interface regulation ofIMEF, a high-efficiency PCET reaction is realized, and kinetic reactionrate constant of photocatalytic oxidation of emerging contaminants is increasedby 3.7 times. This study highlights a strategy for IMEFs to modulate PEC Treactions for a wide range of potential applications, including environmental and ecological applications.

Passivation-Free, Liquid-Metal-Based Electrosynthesis of Aluminum Metal-Organic Frameworks Mediated by Light Metal Activation

The production of aluminum (Al) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) by electrosynthesis using solid-state Al electrodes always faces significant challenges due to the formation of a passivating aluminum oxide layer in the process. Here, we developed a liquid-metal-based method to electrosynthesize an aluminum Al-MOF (MIL-53). This method uses a liquid-state gallium (Ga) anode as a reservoir and activator for a light metal, Al, in the form of Al-Ga alloys that releases Al3+ for the electrosynthesis of Al-MOFs. Introducing Ga into the system inhibits the formation of aluminum oxide passivation layer and promotes the electrochemical reaction for Al-MOF synthesis. The electrosynthesis using liquid Al-Ga alloy is conducted at ambient temperatures for long durations without requiring pretreatment for aluminum oxide removal. We show that the Al-MOF products synthesized from 0.40 wt % Al in liquid Ga lead to the highest crystallinity and possess a specific surface area greater than 800 m2 g-1 and a low capacity for CO2 adsorption that can be used as a potential matrix for CO2/N2 separation. This work provides evidence that employing liquid-metal electrodes offers a viable pathway to circumvent surface passivation effects that inevitably occur when using conventional solid metals. It also introduces an efficient electrosynthesis method based on liquid metals for producing atomically porous materials.

Occurrence, toxicity, impact and removal of selected non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): A review

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are among the most frequently used pharmaceuticals for human therapy, pet therapeutics, and veterinary feeds, enabling them to enter into water sources such as wastewater, soil and sediment, and seawater. The control of NSAIDs has led to the advent of the novel materials for treatment techniques. Herein, we review the occurrence, impact and toxicity of NSAIDs against aquatic microorganisms, plants and humans. Typical NSAIDs, e.g., ibuprofen, ketoprofen, diclofenac, naproxen and aspirin were detected at high concentrations in wastewater up to 2,747,000 ng L-1. NSAIDs in water could cause genotoxicity, endocrine disruption, locomotive disorders, body deformations, organs damage, and photosynthetic corruption. Considering treatment methods, among adsorbents for removal of NSAIDs from water, metal-organic frameworks (10.7-638 mg g-1) and advanced porous carbons (7.4-400 mg g-1) were the most robust. Therefore, these carbon-based adsorbents showed promise in efficiency for the treatment of NSAIDs.

In situ recrystallization of zero-dimensional hybrid metal halide glass-ceramics toward improved scintillation performance

Zero-dimensional (0D) hybrid metal halide (HMH) glasses are emerging luminescent materials and have gained attention due to their transparent character and ease of processing. However, the weakening of photoluminescence quantum efficiency from crystal to glass phases poses limitations for photonics applications. Here we develop high-performance glass-ceramic (G-C) scintillators via in situ recrystallization from 0D HMH glass counterparts composed of distinct organic cations and inorganic anions. The G-C scintillators maintain excellent transparency and exhibit nearly 10-fold higher light yields and lower detection limits than those of glassy phases. The general in situ recrystallization within the glass component by a facile heat treatment is analyzed via combined experimental elaboration and structural/spectral characterization. Our results on the development of G-Cs can initiate more exploration on the phase transformation engineering in 0D HMHs, and therefore make them highly promising for large-area scintillation screen applications.

Innovative Metal-Organic Frameworks for Targeted Oral Cancer Therapy: A Review

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have proven to be very effective carriers for drug delivery in various biological applications. In recent years, the development of hybrid nanostructures has made significant progress, including developing an innovative MOF-loaded nanocomposite with a highly porous structure and low toxicity that can be used to fabricate core-shell nanocomposites by combining complementary materials. This review study discusses using MOF materials in cancer treatment, imaging, and antibacterial effects, focusing on oral cancer cells. For patients with oral cancer, we offer a regular program for accurately designing and producing various anticancer and antibacterial agents to achieve maximum effectiveness and the lowest side effects. Also, we want to ensure that the anticancer agent works optimally and has as few side effects as possible before it is tested in vitro and in vivo. It is also essential that new anticancer drugs for cancer treatment are tested for efficacy and safety before they go into further research.

Metal-organic framework glass composites

The melting phenomenon in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been recognised as one of the fourth generation MOF paradigm behaviours. Molten MOFs have high processibility for producing mechanically robust glassy MOF macrostructures, and they also offer highly tunable interfacial characteristics when combined with other types of functional materials, such as crystalline MOFs, inorganic glass and metal halide perovskites. As a result, MOF glass composites have emerged as a family of functional materials with dynamic properties and hierarchical structural control. These nanocomposites allow for sophisticated materials science studies as well as the fabrication of next-generation separation, catalysis, optical, and biomedical devices. Here, we review the approaches for designing, fabricating, and characterising MOF glass composites. We determine the key application opportunities enabled by these composites and explore the remaining hurdles, such as improving thermal and chemical compatibility, regulating interfacial properties, and scalability.

Functions and applications of emerging metal-organic-framework liquids and glasses

Traditional metal-organic-frameworks (MOFs) have been extensively studied and applied in various fields across chemistry, biology and engineering in the past decades. Recently, a family of emerging MOF liquids and glasses have gained ever-growing research interests owing to their fascinating phase transitions and unique functions. To date, a growing number of MOF crystals have been found to be capable of transforming into liquid and glassy states under external stimuli, which overcomes the limitations of MOF crystals by introducing functional disorder in a controlled manner and offering some desirable properties. This review is dedicated to compiling recent advances in the fundamental understanding of the phase and structure evolution during crystal melting and glass formation in order to give insights into the underlying conversion mechanism. Benefiting from the disordered metal-ligand arrangement and free grain boundaries, various functional properties of liquid and glassy MOFs including porosity, ionic conductivity, and optical/mechanical properties are summarized and evaluated in detail, accompanied by the structure-property correlation. At the same time, their potential applications are further assessed from a developmental perspective according to their unique functions. Finally, we summarize the current progress in the development of liquid/glassy MOFs and point out the serious challenges as well as the potential solutions. This work provides perspectives on the functional applications of liquid/glassy MOFs and highlights the future research directions for the advancement of MOF liquids and glasses.

Mapping nanocrystalline disorder within an amorphous metal-organic framework

Intentionally disordered metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) display rich functional behaviour. However, the characterisation of their atomic structures remains incredibly challenging. X-ray pair distribution function techniques have been pivotal in determining their average local structure but are largely insensitive to spatial variations in the structure. Fe-BTC (BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate) is a nanocomposite MOF, known for its catalytic properties, comprising crystalline nanoparticles and an amorphous matrix. Here, we use scanning electron diffraction to first map the crystalline and amorphous components to evaluate domain size and then to carry out electron pair distribution function analysis to probe the spatially separated atomic structure of the amorphous matrix. Further Bragg scattering analysis reveals systematic orientational disorder within Fe-BTC's nanocrystallites, showing over 10° of continuous lattice rotation across single particles. Finally, we identify candidate unit cells for the crystalline component. These independent structural analyses quantify disorder in Fe-BTC at the critical length scale for engineering composite MOF materials.

ZIF-62 glass foam self-supported membranes to address CH4/N2 separations

Membranes with ultrahigh permeance and practical selectivity could greatly decrease the cost of difficult industrial gas separations, such as CH₄/N₂ separation. Advanced membranes made from porous materials, such as metal-organic frameworks, can achieve a good gas separation performance, although they are typically formed on support layers or mixed with polymeric matrices, placing limitations on gas permeance. Here an amorphous glass foam, a_gfZIF-62, wherein a, g and f denote amorphous, glass and foam, respectively, was synthesized by a polymer-thermal-decomposition-assisted melting strategy, starting from a crystalline zeolitic imidazolate framework, ZIF-62. The thermal decomposition of incorporated low-molecular-weight polyethyleneimine evolves CO₂, NH₃ and H₂O gases, creating a large number and variety of pores. This greatly increases pore interconnectivity but maintains the crystalline ZIF-62 ultramicropores, allowing ultrahigh gas permeance and good selectivity. A self-supported circular a_gfZIF-62 with a thickness of 200-330 µm and area of 8.55 cm² was used for membrane separation. The membranes perform well, showing a CH₄ permeance of 30,000-50,000 gas permeance units, approximately two orders of magnitude higher than that of other reported membranes, with good CH₄/N₂ selectivity (4-6).

Enhanced Solid-State Fluorescence of Flavin Derivatives by Incorporation in the Metal-Organic Frameworks MIL-53(Al) and MOF-5

The flavin derivatives 10-methyl-isoalloxazine (MIA) and 6-fluoro-10-methyl-isoalloxazine (6F-MIA) were incorporated in two alternative metal-organic frameworks, (MOFs) MIL-53(Al) and MOF-5. We used a post-synthetic, diffusion-based incorporation into microcrystalline MIL-53 powders with one-dimensional (1D) pores and an in-situ approach during the synthesis of MOF-5 with its 3D channel network. The maximum amount of flavin dye incorporation is 3.9 wt% for MIA@MIL-53(Al) and 1.5 wt% for 6F-MIA@MIL-53(Al), 0.85 wt% for MIA@MOF-5 and 5.2 wt% for 6F-MIA@MOF-5. For the high incorporation yields the probability to have more than one dye molecule in a pore volume is significant. As compared to the flavins in solution, the fluorescence spectrum of these flavin@MOF composites is broadened at the bathocromic side especially for MIA. Time-resolved spectroscopy showed that multi-exponential fluorescence lifetimes were needed to describe the decays. The fluorescence-weighted lifetime of flavin@MOF of 4 ± 1 ns also corresponds to those in solution but is significantly prolonged compared to the solid flavin dyes with less than 1 ns, thereby confirming the concept of "solid solutions" for dye@MOF composites. The fluorescence quantum yield (Φ_F) of the flavin@MOF composites is about half of the solution but is significantly higher compared to the solid flavin dyes. Both the fluorescence lifetime and quantum yield of flavin@MOF decrease with the flavin loading in MIL-53 due to the formation of various J-aggregates. Theoretical calculations using plane-wave and QM/MM methods are in good correspondence with the experimental results and explain the electronic structures as well as the photophysical properties of crystalline MIA and the flavin@MOF composites. In the solid flavins, π-stacking interactions of the molecules lead to a charge transfer state with low oscillator strength resulting in aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) with low lifetimes and quantum yields. In the MOF pores, single flavin molecules represent a major population and the computed MIA@MOF structures do not find π-stacking interactions with the pore walls but only weak van-der-Waals contacts which reasons the enhanced fluorescence lifetime and quantum yield of the flavins in the composites compared to their neat solid state. To analyze the orientation of flavins in MOFs, we measured fluorescence anisotropy images of single flavin@MOF-5 crystals and a static ensemble flavin@MIL53 microcrystals, respectively. Based on image information, anisotropy distributions and overall curve of the time-resolved anisotropy curves combined with theoretical calculations, we can prove that all fluorescent flavins species have a defined and rather homogeneous orientation in the MOF framework. In MIL-53, the transition dipole moments of flavins are orientated along the 1D channel axis, whereas in MOF-5 we resolved an average orientation that is tilted with respect to the cubic crystal lattice. Notably, the more hydrophobic 6F-MIA exhibits a higher degree order than MIA. The flexible MOF MIL-53(Al) was optimized essentially to the experimental large-pore form in the guest-free state with QuantumEspresso (QE) and with MIA molecules in the pores the structure contracted to close to the experimental narrow-pore form which was also confirmed by PXRD. In summary, the incorporation of flavins in MOFs yields solid-state materials with enhanced rigidity, stabilized conformation, defined orientation and reduced aggregations of the flavins, leading to increased fluorescence lifetime and quantum yield as controllable photo-luminescent and photo-physical properties.

A resonant energy transfer electrochemiluminescence immunosensor based on low trigger potential of Zn-metal organic framework and CoOOH nanosheets for 5-fluorouracil detection

The organic luminophores have inspired widespread interest in electrochemiluminescence (ECL). Herein, a novel rod-like metal-organic framework was formed by chelating Zn ion with 9,10-di(p-carboxyphenyl)-anthracene (DPA), defined as Zn-MOF for simplicity. In this proposal, the prepared Zn-MOF was first used as a powerful organic luminophore with low trigger potential, thus developing a competitive ECL immunoassay for ultrasensitive detection of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) with 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (D-H₂) as the coreactant. The absorption spectrum of cobalt oxyhydroxide (CoOOH) nanosheets and the ECL emission spectrum of Zn-MOF could be highly matched, which ensured the occurrence of resonance energy transfer (RET). For that, ECL-RET was applied in the assembly strategy of the ECL biosensor, and Zn-MOF was used as the energy donor and CoOOH nanosheets as the acceptor. Taking advantage of the luminophore and ECL-RET, the immunoassay can be used for ultra-sensitive quantitative detection of 5-fluorouracil. The proposed ECL-RET immunosensor showed satisfactory sensitivity and accuracy with a wider linear range from 0.001 to 1000 ng/mL, and a lower detection limit (0.52 pg/mL). Hence, it is worth believing that this strategy can pave a bright research direction for the detection of 5-FU or other biological small molecules.

Composite with a Glassy Nonporous Coordination Polymer Enhances Gas Adsorption Selectivity

A glass-crystal composite (g-NCP/PCP), comprising a glassy nonporous coordination polymer (g-NCP) and a crystalline porous coordination polymer (PCP)/metal-organic framework, was synthesized by using a melt-quenched method. Compared to that of the PCP itself, g-NCP/PCP has an enhanced gas adsorption selectivity. The results should stimulate further studies of the chemistry of g-NCP/PCP glass-crystal composites.

Direct Sintering Behavior of Metal Organic Frameworks/Coordination Polymers

In this study, we investigate the sintering behavior and mechanisms of metal-organic frameworks/coordination polymers (CPs) through physical and microstructural characterization of [Zn(HPO₄)(H₂PO₄)₂]·2H₂Im (ZPI; a melting CP, Im = imidazole) and ZIF-8 (a non-melting CP). By performing simple compaction and subsequent sintering, a bulk body of CPs was obtained without losing the macroscopic crystallinity. The sintering behavior was found to be dependent on the temperature, heating rate, and physical properties of the CPs and, in particular, their meltability. During sintering, shrinkage occurred in both the CPs, but the observed shrinkage rate of the ZPI was in the 10-20% range, whereas that of the ZIF-8 was less than 1%. Additionally, the sintering mechanisms of the ZPI and ZIF-8 varied between low and high temperatures, and in the case of ZPI, localized melting between the primary particles was the dominant mechanism on the high-temperature side. However, substantial shrinkage did not correspond to an increase in density; on the contrary, a decrease in the apparent density of ZPI was observed as the sintering temperature was increased. The sintering technique is well established and commercially available; thus, the results obtained in this study can be utilized for optimizing the manufacturing conditions of melting CPs.

A dual purpose aluminum-based metal organic framework for the removal of chloramphenicol from wastewater

The presence of antibiotics in the aquatic environment can cause significant environmental and human health problems even at trace concentrations. Conventional treatment systems alone are ineffective in removing these resistant antibiotics. To address this problem, oxidation and adsorption techniques were used to explore the removal of recalcitrant antibiotic chloramphenicol (CAP). An aluminum-based metal-organic framework (Al-MIL) with high surface area and extended porosity, was prepared and used both as adsorbent and catalyst for the oxidation of CAP. Characterization of the Al-MIL revealed a large surface area of 1137 m² g^-1, a homogeneous microporous structure, good crystallinity, and particle size in the range of 200-400 nm. Adsorption of CAP on Al-MIL achieved equilibrium after 1 h, reaching a maximum adsorption capacity of 96.1 mg g^-1 at the optimum pH value of 5.3. The combination of adsorption and oxidation did not improve the % TOC reduction considerably, indicating an antagonistic rather than synergistic effect between the two processes. Oxidation alone in the presence of persulfate, achieved a % TOC reduction of 71% after 2 h, compared to 56% achieved by adsorption alone at the same duration. The optimum persulfate concentration was determined as 2.5 mM. The Al-MIL structure did not demonstrate any substantial deterioriation after six repeated runs, according to the reusability experiments.

Mapping short-range order at the nanoscale in metal-organic framework and inorganic glass composites

Characterization of nanoscale changes in the atomic structure of amorphous materials is a profound challenge. Established X-ray and neutron total scattering methods typically provide sufficient signal quality only over macroscopic volumes. Pair distribution function analysis using electron scattering (ePDF) in the scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) has emerged as a method of probing nanovolumes of these materials, but inorganic glasses as well as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and many other materials containing organic components are characteristically prone to irreversible changes after limited electron beam exposures. This beam sensitivity requires 'low-dose' data acquisition to probe inorganic glasses, amorphous and glassy MOFs, and MOF composites. Here, we use STEM-ePDF applied at low electron fluences (10 e^- Å^-2) combined with unsupervised machine learning methods to map changes in the short-range order with ca. 5 nm spatial resolution in a composite material consisting of a zeolitic imidazolate framework glass a_gZIF-62 and a 0.67([Na₂O]_0.9[P₂O₅])-0.33([AlO_3/2][AlF₃]_1.5) inorganic glass. STEM-ePDF enables separation of MOF and inorganic glass domains from atomic structure differences alone, showing abrupt changes in atomic structure at interfaces with interatomic correlation distances seen in X-ray PDF preserved at the nanoscale. These findings underline that the average bulk amorphous structure is retained at the nanoscale in the growing family of MOF glasses and composites, a previously untested assumption in PDF analyses crucial for future non-crystalline nanostructure engineering.

Fabrication of hydrangea-shaped Bi2WO6/ZIF-8 visible-light responsive photocatalysts for degradation of methylene blue

In this paper, the hydrangea-shaped Bi₂WO₆/ZIF-8 (BWOZ) visible light photocatalysts have been prepared via a facile synthetic strategy for the first time. The constructed BWOZ composites were systematically studied by a series of characterization techniques. The SEM results manifested the octahedral ZIF-8 coated the flower-like Bi₂WO₆ uniformly and the composition of BWOZ composites had been confirmed by XPS measurement. And the photocatalytic activity was evaluated by eliminating methylene blue with the help of visible light. The results showed that 7%-BWOZ (7.0 wt% Bi₂WO₆) exhibited better photodegradation capability than pure Bi₂WO₆ and ZIF-8. Compared with Bi₂WO₆, the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue by 7%-BWOZ could reach 85.7%. In addition, the pseudo-first-order kinetic constant of 7%-BWOZ was 23.00 and 1.61 times that of pristine Bi₂WO₆ and ZIF-8, respectively. The improved photocatalytic ability of BWOZ systems may be due to the construction of heterojunctions between Bi₂WO₆ and ZIF-8, which resulted in the rapid separation of photogenerated carriers. Additionally, the specific surface area of the formed BWOZ system was also improved in comparison with the flower-shaped Bi₂WO₆, and thus more active sites could be provided to contact with methylene blue molecules, thereby achieving better removal capacity. Moreover, trapping experiments and electron spin resonance results further illustrated that the coexistence of multiple free radicals realized efficient degradation of methylene blue. More importantly, the photocatalytic property of the 7%-BWOZ composite remained even after three cycles. Furthermore, a feasible photodegradation mechanism was also explored in depth.

Materials Formed by Combining Inorganic Glasses and Metal‐Organic Frameworks

Here, we propose the combination of glassy or crystalline metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) with inorganic glasses to create novel hybrid composites and blends.The motivation behind this new composite approach is to improve the processability issues and mechanical performance of MOFs, whilst maintaining their ubiquitous properties. Herein, the precepts of successful composite formation and pairing of MOF and glass MOFs with inorganic glasses are presented. Focus is also given to the synthetic routes to such materials and the challenges anticipated in both their production and characterisation. Depending on their chemical nature, materials are classified as crystalline MOF‐glass composites and blends. Additionally, the potential properties and applications of these two classes of materials are considered, the key aim being the retention of beneficial properties of both components, whilst circumventing their respective drawbacks.

Dumbbell Plate-Shaped AIEgen-Based Luminescent MOF with High Quantum Yield as Self-Enhanced ECL Tags: Mechanism Insights and Biosensing Application

It is widely known that high-performance electrochemiluminescence (ECL) emitters play a crucial part in improving the detection sensitivity of the ECL strategy. Through the combination of aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens), 1,1,2,2-tetra(4-carboxylbiphenyl)ethylene (H₄ TCBPE) with Zr(IV) cations, a dumbbell plate-shaped metal-organic framework (MOF) with high luminous efficiency is synthesized as ECL tags. The resultant MOF exhibits stronger ECL activity than those of H₄ TCBPE monomers and aggregates. Herein, this phenomenon is defined as the coordination-triggered electrochemiluminescence (CT-ECL) enhancement effect. Furthermore, the nearly matched ECL and photoluminescence (PL) spectra imply the bandgap emission mechanism. Remarkably, polyethyleneimine (PEI) as the coreactant is covalently connected with MOF to form the uniquely self-enhanced ECL complex of Zr-TCBPE-PEI, where the robust ECL signal is captured owing to the intramolecular-like coreaction acceleration. Based on the resonance energy transfer (RET) behavior, the AuPd@SiO₂ composite is designed as the high-efficiency quencher. In this manner, an innovative and ultrasensitive ECL sensor is constructed for neuron-specific enolase (NSE) detection through sandwich-type immunoreaction, with the detection limit down to 52 fg ml^-1 . The present study has gone some way toward designing MOF-based self-luminescent ECL materials, thus paving a new avenue to expand the late-model ECL emitters for immunoassay.

Properties of Single-Component Metal-Organic Framework Crystal-Glass Composites

The formation, and subsequent structural, thermal and adsorptive properties of single-component metal-organic framework crystal-glass composites (MOF-CGCs) are investigated. A series of novel materials exhibiting chemically identical glassy and crystalline phases within the same material were produced, where crystalline ZIF-62(Zn) was incorporated within an a_g ZIF-62(Zn) matrix. X-ray diffraction showed that the crystalline phase was still present after heating to above the glass transition temperature of a_g ZIF-62(Zn), and interfacial compatibility between the crystalline and glassy phases was investigated using a mixed-metal (ZIF-62(Co))_0.5 (a_g ZIF-62(Zn))_0.5 analogue. CO₂ gas adsorption measurements showed that the CO₂ uptakes of the MOF-CGCs were between those of the crystalline and glassy phases.

Mixed hierarchical local structure in a disordered metal-organic framework

Amorphous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are an emerging class of materials. However, their structural characterisation represents a significant challenge. Fe-BTC, and the commercial equivalent Basolite® F300, are MOFs with incredibly diverse catalytic ability, yet their disordered structures remain poorly understood. Here, we use advanced electron microscopy to identify a nanocomposite structure of Fe-BTC where nanocrystalline domains are embedded within an amorphous matrix, whilst synchrotron total scattering measurements reveal the extent of local atomic order within Fe-BTC. We use a polymerisation-based algorithm to generate an atomistic structure for Fe-BTC, the first example of this methodology applied to the amorphous MOF field outside the well-studied zeolitic imidazolate framework family. This demonstrates the applicability of this computational approach towards the modelling of other amorphous MOF systems with potential generality towards all MOF chemistries and connectivities. We find that the structures of Fe-BTC and Basolite® F300 can be represented by models containing a mixture of short- and medium-range order with a greater proportion of medium-range order in Basolite® F300 than in Fe-BTC. We conclude by discussing how our approach may allow for high-throughput computational discovery of functional, amorphous MOFs.

Enhanced Visible-Light-Driven Hydrogen Production through MOF/MOF Heterojunctions

A strategy for enhancing the photocatalytic performance of MOF-based systems (MOF: metal-organic framework) is developed through the construction of MOF/MOF heterojunctions. The combination of MIL-167 with MIL-125-NH₂ leads to the formation of MIL-167/MIL-125-NH₂ heterojunctions with improved optoelectronic properties and efficient charge separation. MIL-167/MIL-125-NH₂ outperforms its single components MIL-167 and MIL-125-NH₂, in terms of photocatalytic H₂ production (455 versus 0.8 and 51.2 μmol h^-1 g^-1, respectively), under visible-light irradiation, without the use of any cocatalysts. This is attributed to the appropriate band alignment of these MOFs, the enhanced visible-light absorption, and long charge separation within MIL-167/MIL-125-NH₂. Our findings contribute to the discovery of novel MOF-based photocatalytic systems that can harvest solar energy and exhibit high catalytic activities in the absence of cocatalysts.

The reactivity of an inorganic glass melt with ZIF-8

The thermal behaviour of ZIF-8, Zn(meIm)2 in the presence of a sodium fluoroaluminophosphate glass melt was probed through differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. The structural integrity of ZIF-8 was then determined by a combination of powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infra-red and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

Structural modulation of the photophysical and electronic properties of pyrene-based 3D metal–organic frameworks derived from s-block metals

Materials in which charge delocalization and migration can be tuned are critical for electronic applications.

Current Progress and Future Directions in Gas-Phase Metal-Organic Framework Thin-Film Growth

Deposition of materials as a thin film is important for various applications, such as sensors, microelectronic devices, and membranes. There have been breakthroughs in gas-phase metal-organic framework (MOF) thin-film growth, which is more applicable to micro- and nanofabrication processes and also less harmful to the environment than solvent-based methods. Three different types of gas-phase MOF thin film deposition methods have been developed using chemical vapor deposition (CVD), atomic layer deposition (ALD), and physical vapor deposition (PVD)-CVD combined techniques. The CVD-based method basically converts metal oxide layers into MOF thin films by exposing the surface to ligand vapor. The ALD-based method allows growing MOF thin films following layer-by-layer (LBL) growth by sequentially exposing gas-phase metal and ligand precursors. The PVD-CVD method uses PVD for metal deposition and CVD for ligand deposition, which is similar to LBL growth. These gas-phase growth methods can broaden the use of MOFs in diverse areas. Herein, the current progress of gas-phase MOF thin film growth is discussed and future directions suggested.

Direct Imaging of Correlated Defect Nanodomains in a Metal-Organic Framework

Defect engineering can enhance key properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Tailoring the distribution of defects, for example in correlated nanodomains, requires characterization across length scales. However, a critical nanoscale characterization gap has emerged between the bulk diffraction techniques used to detect defect nanodomains and the subnanometer imaging used to observe individual defects. Here, we demonstrate that the emerging technique of scanning electron diffraction (SED) can bridge this gap uniquely enabling both nanoscale crystallographic analysis and the low-dose formation of multiple diffraction contrast images for defect analysis in MOFs. We directly image defect nanodomains in the MOF UiO-66(Hf) over an area of ca. 1000 nm and with a spatial resolution ca. 5 nm to reveal domain morphology and distribution. Based on these observations, we suggest possible crystal growth processes underpinning synthetic control of defect nanodomains. We also identify likely dislocations and small angle grain boundaries, illustrating that SED could be a key technique in developing the potential for engineering the distribution of defects, or "microstructure", in functional MOF design.

An AIEgen-based 2D ultrathin metal-organic layer as an electrochemiluminescence platform for ultrasensitive biosensing of carcinoembryonic antigen

In this work, a novel two-dimensional (2D) ultrathin metal-organic layer (MOL) based on the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) ligand H4ETTC (H4ETTC = 4',4''',4''''',4'''''''-(ethene-1,1,2,2-tetrayl)tetrakis(([1,1'-biphenyl]-4-carboxylic acid))) was developed and used to construct a novel electrochemiluminescence (ECL) aptasensor for ultrasensitive detection of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). The newly synthesized AIE luminogen (AIEgen)-based MOL (Hf-ETTC-MOL) yielded a higher ECL intensity and efficiency than did H4ETTC monomers, H4ETTC aggregates and 3D bulk Hf-ETTC-MOF. This improvement occurred not only because the ETTC ligands were coordinatively immobilized in a rigid MOL matrix, which restricted the intramolecular free rotation and vibration of these ligands and then reduced the non-radiative transition, but also because the porous ultrathin 2D MOL greatly shortened the transport distances of ions, electrons, coreactant (triethylamine, TEA) and coreactant intermediates (TEA˙ and TEA˙+), which made more ETTC luminophores able to be excited and yielded a high ECL efficiency. On the basis of using the Hf-ETTC-MOL as a novel ECL emitter and rolling circle amplification (RCA) as a signal amplification strategy, the constructed ECL aptasensor exhibited a linear range from 1 fg mL-1 to 1 ng mL-1 with a detection limit of 0.63 fg mL-1. This work has opened up new prospects for developing novel ECL materials and is expected to lead to increased interest in using AIEgen-based MOLs for ECL sensing.

Functional Group Mapping by Electron Beam Vibrational Spectroscopy from Nanoscale Volumes

Vibrational spectroscopies directly record details of bonding in materials, but spatially resolved methods have been limited to surface techniques for mapping functional groups at the nanoscale. Electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) in the scanning transmission electron microscope presents a route to functional group analysis from nanoscale volumes using transmitted subnanometer electron probes. Here, we now use vibrational EELS to map distinct carboxylate and imidazolate linkers in a metal-organic framework (MOF) crystal-glass composite material. Domains <100 nm in size are observed using vibrational EELS, with recorded spatial resolution <15 nm at interfaces in the composite. This nanoscale functional group mapping is confirmed by correlated EELS at core ionization edges as well as X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy for elemental mapping of the metal centers of the two constituent MOFs. These results present a complete nanoscale analysis of the building blocks of the MOF composite and establish spatially resolved functional group analysis using electron beam spectroscopy for crystalline and amorphous organic and metal-organic solids.

Halogenated Metal-Organic Framework Glasses and Liquids

The synthesis of four novel crystalline zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) structures using a mixed-ligand approach is reported. The inclusion of both imidazolate and halogenated benzimidazolate-derived linkers leads to glass-forming behavior by all four structures. Melting temperatures are observed to depend on both electronic and steric effects. Solid-state NMR and terahertz (THz)/far-IR demonstrate the presence of a Zn-F bond for fluorinated ZIF glasses. In situ THz/far-IR spectroscopic techniques reveal the dynamic structural properties of crystal, glass, and liquid phases of the halogenated ZIFs, linking the melting behavior of ZIFs to the propensity of the ZnN₄ tetrahedra to undergo thermally induced deformation. The inclusion of halogenated ligands within metal-organic framework (MOF) glasses improves their gas-uptake properties.

Interfacial engineering of a polymer-MOF composite by in situ vitrification

Non-stoichoimetric crystalline ZIF-62 was used as the filler for a 6FDA-DAM polyimide-based composite membrane. In situ melting and vitrification of ZIF-62 was then performed, to yield the ZIF-62 glass phase (agZIF-62), within the polymer matrix. Focus ion beam scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM), thermal characterisation and membrane separation tests demonstrate the filling of voids at the MOF/polymer interface from the liquid phase of ZIF-62.
