Characterization of a Reactive Rh2 Nitrenoid by Crystalline Matrix Isolation

Triplet carbenes with transition-metal substituents

The extraordinary advances in carbene (R1-C-R2) chemistry have been fuelled by strategies to stabilize the electronic singlet state via π interactions. In contrast, the lack of similarly efficient approaches to obtain authentic triplet carbenes with appreciable lifetimes beyond cryogenic temperatures hampers their exploitation in synthesis and catalysis. Transition-metal substitution represents a potential strategy, but metallocarbenes (M-C-R) usually represent high-lying excited electronic configurations of the well-established carbyne complexes (M≡C-R). Here we report the synthesis and characterization of triplet metallocarbenes (M-C-SiMe3, M = PdII, PtII) that are persistent beyond cryogenic conditions, and their selective reactivity towards carbene C-H insertion and carbonylation. Bond analysis reveals significant stabilization by spin-polarized push-pull interactions along both π-bonding planes, which fundamentally differs from bonding in push-pull singlet carbenes. This bonding model, thus, expands key strategies for stabilizing the open-shell carbene electromers and closes a conceptual gap towards carbyne complexes.

Photoinitiated Single-Crystal to Single-Crystal Redox Transformations of Titanium-Oxo Clusters

Titanium-oxo clusters can undergo photochemical reactions under UV light, resulting in the reduction of the titanium-oxo core and oxidation of surface ligands. This is an important step in photocatalytic processes in light-absorbing Ti/O-based clusters, metal-organic frameworks, and (nano)material surfaces; however, studying the direct outcome of this photochemical process is challenging due to the fragility of the immediate photoproducts. In this report, titanium-oxo clusters [TiO(OiPr)(L)]n (n = 4, L = O2PPh2, or n = 6, L = O2CCH2tBu) undergo a two-electron photoredox reaction in the single-crystal state via an irreversible single-crystal to single-crystal (SC-SC) transformation initiated by a UV laser. The process is monitored by single crystal X-ray diffraction revealing the photoreduction of the cluster with coproduction of an (oxidized) acetone ligand, which is retained in the structure as a ligand to Ti(3+). The results demonstrate that photochemistry of inorganic molecules can be studied in the single crystal phase, allowing characterization of photoproducts which are unstable in the solution phase.

N-(Sulfonio)Sulfilimine Reagents: Non-Oxidizing Sources of Electrophilic Nitrogen Atom for Skeletal Editing

The one-pot synthesis of λ4-dibenzothiophen-5-imino-N-dibenzothiophenium triflate (1) in multigram scale is reported. This compound reacts with Rh2(esp)2 (esp=α,α,α',α'-tetramethyl-1,3-benzenedipropionic acid) generating a Rh-coordinated sulfonitrene species, which is able to transfer the electrophilic nitrene moiety to olefins. When indenes are used as substrates, isoquinolines are obtained in good yields. We assumed that after formation of the corresponding N-sulfonio aziridine, a ring expansion occurs via selective C-C bond cleavage and concomitant elimination of dibenzothiophene. Unexpectedly, a similar protocol transforms 1-arylcyclobutenes into 1-cyano-1-arylcyclopropanes. Our calculations indicate that aziridination is not favored in this case; instead, sulfilimine-substituted cyclobutyl carbocations are initially formed, and these evolve to the isolated cyclopropanes via ring contraction. Both procedures are operationally simple, tolerate a range of functional groups, including oxidation-sensitive alcohols and aldehydes, and enable the convenient preparation of valuable 15N-labelled products. These results demonstrate the potential of 1 to provide alternative pathways for the selective transfer of N-atoms in organic molecules.

Photoinduced Group Transposition via Iridium-Nitrenoid Leading to Amidative Inner-Sphere Aryl Migration

We herein report a fundamental mechanistic investigation into photochemical metal-nitrenoid generation and inner-sphere transposition reactivity using organometallic photoprecursors. By designing Cp*Ir(hydroxamate)(Ar) complexes, we induced photo-initiated ligand activation, allowing us to explore the amidative σ(Ir-aryl) migration reactivity. A combination of experimental mechanistic studies, femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the metal-to-ligand charge transfer enables the σ(N-O) cleavage, followed by Ir-acylnitrenoid generation. The final inner-sphere σ(Ir-aryl) group migration results in a net amidative group transposition.

A rhodium(II)/rhodium(III) redox couple for C-H bond amination with alkylazides: a rhodium(III)-nitrenoid intermediate with a tetradentate [14]-macrocyclic ligand

The catalytic activity of a rhodium(II) dimer complex, [RhII(TMAA)]2 (TMAA = tetramethyltetraaza[14]annulene), in C-H amination reactions with organic azides is explored. Organic azides (N3-R) with an electron-withdrawing group such as a sulfonyl group (trisylazide; R = S(O)2iPr3C6H2 (Trs)) and a simple alkyl group (R = (CH2)4Ph, (CH2)2OCH2Ph, CH2Ph, or C6H4NO2) are employed in intra- and intermolecular C-H bond amination reactions. The spectroscopic analysis using ESI-mass and EPR spectroscopy techniques on the reaction intermediate generated from [RhII(TMAA)]2 and N3-R reveals that a rhodium(III)-nitrenoid species is an active oxidant in the C-H bond amination reaction. DFT calculations suggest that the species can feature a radical localised nitrogen atom. The DFT calculation studies also indicate that the amination reaction involves hydrogen atom abstraction from the organic substrate R'-H by the NR moiety of 2N˙R and successive rebound of the generated organic radical intermediate R'˙ to [RhIII(NH-R)(TMAA)], giving [RhII(TMAA)] and R'-NH-R (amination product).

Deciphering Iron-Catalyzed C-H Amination with Organic Azides: N2 Cleavage from a Stable Organoazide Complex

Catalytic C-N bond formation by direct activation of C-H bonds offers wide synthetic potential. En route to C-H amination, complexes with organic azides are critical precursors towards the reactive nitrene intermediate. Despite their relevance, α-N coordinated organoazide complexes are scarce in general, and elusive with iron, although iron complexes are by far the most active catalysts for C-H amination with organoazides. Herein, we report the synthesis of a stable iron α-N coordinated organoazide complex from [Fe(N(SiMe3 )2 )2 ] and AdN3 (Ad=1-adamantyl) and its crystallographic, IR, NMR and zero-field 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopic characterization. These analyses revealed that the organoazide is in fast equilibrium between the free and coordinated state (Keq =62). Photo-crystallography experiments showed gradual dissociation of N2 , which imparted an Fe-N bond shortening and correspond to structural snapshots of the formation of an iron imido/nitrene complex. Reactivity of the organoazide complex in solution showed complete loss of N2 , and subsequent formation of a C-H aminated product via nitrene insertion into a C-H bond of the N(SiMe3 )2 ligand. Monitoring this reaction by 1 H NMR spectroscopy indicates the transient formation of the imido/nitrene intermediate, which was supported by Mössbauer spectroscopy in frozen solution.

Development of Nonclassical Photoprecursors for Rh2 Nitrenes

Characterization of reactive intermediates in C-H functionalization is challenging due to the fleeting lifetimes of these species. Synthetic photochemistry provides a strategy to generate post-turnover-limiting-step intermediates in catalysis under cryogenic conditions that enable characterization. We have a long-standing interest in the structure and reactivity of Rh2 nitrene intermediates, which are implicated as transient intermediates in Rh2-catalyzed C-H amination. Previously, we demonstrated that Rh2 complexes bearing organic azide ligands can serve as solid-state and in crystallo photoprecursors in the synthesis of transient Rh2 nitrenoids. Complementary solution-phase experiments have not been available due to the weak binding of most organic azides to Rh2 complexes. Furthermore, the volatility of the N2 that is evolved during in crystallo nitrene synthesis from these precursors has prevented the in crystallo observation of C-H functionalization from lattice-confined nitrenes. Motivated by these challenges, here we describe the synthesis and photochemistry of nonclassical nitrene precursors based on sulfilimine ligands. Sulfilimines bind to Rh2 carboxylate complexes more tightly than the corresponding azides, which has enabled the full solid-state and solution-phase characterization of these new complexes. The higher binding affinity of sulfilimine ligands as compared with organic azides has enabled both solution-phase and solid-state nitrene photochemistry. Cryogenic photochemical studies of Rh2 sulfilimine complexes confined within polystyrene thin films demonstrate that sulfilimine photochemistry can be accomplished at low temperature but that C-H amination is rapid at temperatures compatible with N═S photoactivation. The potential of these structures to serve as platforms for multistep in crystallo cascades is discussed.

Mechanistic snapshots of rhodium-catalyzed acylnitrene transfer reactions

Rhodium acylnitrene complexes are widely implicated in catalytic C-H amidation reactions but have eluded isolation and structural characterization. To overcome this challenge, we designed a chromophoric octahedral rhodium complex with a bidentate dioxazolone ligand, in which photoinduced metal-to-ligand charge transfer initiates catalytic C-H amidation. X-ray photocrystallographic analysis of the Rh-dioxazolone complex allowed structural elucidation of the targeted Rh-acylnitrenoid and provided firm evidence that the singlet nitrenoid species is primarily responsible for acylamino transfer reactions. We also monitored in crystallo reaction of a nucleophile with the in situ generated Rh-acylnitrenoid, providing a crystallographically traceable reaction system to capture mechanistic snapshots of nitrenoid transfer.

Copper Complexes with Diazoolefin Ligands and their Photochemical Conversion into Alkenylidene Complexes

Homometallic copper complexes with alkenylidene ligands are discussed as intermediates in catalysis but the isolation of such complexes has remained elusive. Herein, we report the structural characterization of copper complexes with bridging and terminal alkenylidene ligands. The compounds were obtained by irradiation of Cu^I complexes with N-heterocyclic diazoolefin ligands. The complex with a terminal alkenylidene ligand required isolation in a crystalline matrix, and its structural characterization was enabled by in crystallo photolysis at low temperature.

Visible-Light-Induced Decarboxylation of Dioxazolones to Phosphinimidic Amides and Ureas

A visible-light-induced external catalyst-free decarboxylation of dioxazolones was realized for the bond formation of N=P and N–C bonds to access phosphinimidic amides and ureas. Various phosphinimidic amides and ureas (47 examples) were synthesized with high yields (up to 98%) by this practical strategy in the presence of the system’s ppm Fe.

A Combined Spectroscopic and Computational Study on the Mechanism of Iron-Catalyzed Aminofunctionalization of Olefins Using Hydroxylamine Derived N-O Reagent as the "Amino" Source and "Oxidant"

Herein, we study the mechanism of iron-catalyzed direct synthesis of unprotected aminoethers from olefins by a hydroxyl amine derived reagent using a wide range of analytical and spectroscopic techniques (Mössbauer, Electron Paramagnetic Resonance, Ultra-Violet Visible Spectroscopy, X-ray Absorption, Nuclear Resonance Vibrational Spectroscopy, and resonance Raman) along with high-level quantum chemical calculations. The hydroxyl amine derived triflic acid salt acts as the “oxidant” as well as “amino” group donor. It activates the high-spin Fe(II) (S_t = 2) catalyst [Fe(acac)₂(H₂O)₂] (1) to generate a high-spin (S_t = 5/2) intermediate (Int I), which decays to a second intermediate (Int II) with S_t = 2. The analysis of spectroscopic and computational data leads to the formulation of Int I as [Fe(III)(acac)₂-N-acyloxy] (an alkyl-peroxo-Fe(III) analogue). Furthermore, Int II is formed by N–O bond homolysis. However, it does not generate a high-valent Fe(IV)(NH) species (a Fe(IV)(O) analogue), but instead a high-spin Fe(III) center which is strongly antiferromagnetically coupled (J = −524 cm^–1) to an iminyl radical, [Fe(III)(acac)₂-NH·], giving S_t = 2. Though Fe(NH) complexes as isoelectronic surrogates to Fe(O) functionalities are known, detection of a high-spin Fe(III)-N-acyloxy intermediate (Int I), which undergoes N–O bond cleavage to generate the active iron–nitrogen intermediate (Int II), is unprecedented. Relative to Fe(IV)(O) centers, Int II features a weak elongated Fe–N bond which, together with the unpaired electron density along the Fe–N bond vector, helps to rationalize its propensity for N-transfer reactions onto styrenyl olefins, resulting in the overall formation of aminoethers. This study thus demonstrates the potential of utilizing the iron-coordinated nitrogen-centered radicals as powerful reactive intermediates in catalysis.

A combined experimental and theoretical study on the reactivity of nitrenes and nitrene radical anions

Nitrene transfer reactions represent one of the key reactions to rapidly construct new carbon-nitrogen bonds and typically require transition metal catalysts to control the reactivity of the pivotal nitrene intermediate. Herein, we report on the application of iminoiodinanes in amination reactions under visible light photochemical conditions. While a triplet nitrene can be accessed under catalyst-free conditions, the use of a suitable photosensitizer allows the access of a nitrene radical anion. Computational and mechanistic studies rationalize the access and reactivity of triplet nitrene and nitrene radical anion and allow the direct comparison of both amination reagents. We conclude with applications of both reagents in organic synthesis and showcase their reactivity in the reaction with olefins, which underline their markedly distinct reactivity. Both reagents can be accessed under mild reaction conditions at room temperature without the necessity to exclude moisture or air, which renders these metal-free, photochemical amination reactions highly practical.

Gaining in-depth understanding of photochemical processes is key for developing more sustainable and efficient chemical transformations. Here the authors show that under visible light photochemical conditions, iminoiodinanes undergo formation of triplet nitrenes or nitrene radical anions, depending on the use of a photosensitizer; These reagents are studied in amination reactions with olefins.

An Isolable Azide Adduct of Titanium(II) Follows Bifurcated Deazotation Pathways to an Imide

AdN₃ (Ad = 1-adamantyl) reacts with the tetrahedral Ti^II complex [(Tp^tBu,Me)TiCl] (Tp^tBu,Me = hydrotris(3-tert-butyl-5-methylpyrazol-1-yl)borate) to generate a mixture of an imide complex, [(Tp^tBu,Me)TiCl(NAd)] (4), and an unusual and kinetically stable azide adduct of the group 4 metal, namely, [(Tp^tBu,Me)TiCl(γ-N₃Ad)] (3). In these conversions, the product distribution is determined by the relative concentration of reactants. In contrast, the azide adduct 3 forms selectively when a masked Ti^II complex (N₂ or AdNC adduct) reacts with AdN₃. Upon heating, 3 extrudes dinitrogen in a unimolecular process proceeding through a titanatriazete intermediate to form the imide complex 4, but the observed thermal stability of the azide adduct (t_1/2 = 61 days at 25 °C) is at odds with the large fraction of imide complex formed directly in reactions between AdN₃ and [(Tp^tBu,Me)TiCl] at room temperature (∼50% imide with a 1:1 stoichiometry). A combination of theoretical and experimental studies identified an additional deazotation pathway, proceeding through a bimetallic complex bridged by a single azide ligand. The electronic origin of this deazotation mechanism lies in the ability of azide adduct 3 to serve as a π-backbonding metallaligand toward free [(Tp^tBu,Me)TiCl]. These findings unveil a new class of azide-to-imide conversions for transition metals, highlighting that the mechanisms underlying this common synthetic methodology may be more complex than conventionally assumed, given the concentration dependence in the conversion of an azide into an imide complex. Lastly, we show how significantly different AdN₃ reacts when treated with [(Tp^tBu,Me)VCl].

Nitrogen Atom Transfer Catalysis by Metallonitrene C-H Insertion: Photocatalytic Amidation of Aldehydes

C−H amination and amidation by catalytic nitrene transfer are well‐established and typically proceed via electrophilic attack of nitrenoid intermediates. In contrast, the insertion of (formal) terminal nitride ligands into C−H bonds is much less developed and catalytic nitrogen atom transfer remains unknown. We here report the synthesis of a formal terminal nitride complex of palladium. Photocrystallographic, magnetic, and computational characterization support the assignment as an authentic metallonitrene (Pd−N) with a diradical nitrogen ligand that is singly bonded to Pd^II. Despite the subvalent nitrene character, selective C−H insertion with aldehydes follows nucleophilic selectivity. Transamidation of the benzamide product is enabled by reaction with N₃SiMe₃. Based on these results, a photocatalytic protocol for aldehyde C−H trimethylsilylamidation was developed that exhibits inverted, nucleophilic selectivity as compared to typical nitrene transfer catalysis. This first example of catalytic C−H nitrogen atom transfer offers facile access to primary amides after deprotection.

Tin(II)-Nitrene Radical Complexes Formed by Electron Transfer from Redox-Active Ligand to Organic Azides and Their Reactivity in C(sp3)-H Activation

A tin(II) complex coordinated by a sterically demanding o-phenylenediamido ligand is synthesized. The ligand is redox-active to reach a tin(II) complex with the diiminobenzosemiquinone radial anion in the oxidation by AgPF₆. The tin(II) complex reacts with a series of nosylazides (x-NO₂C₆H₄-SO₂-N₃; x = o, m, or p) at -30 °C to yield the corresponding nitrene radical bound tin(II) complexes. The nitrene radical complexes exhibit C(sp³)-H activation and amination reactivity.

Nitrene Photochemistry of Manganese N-Haloamides*

Manganese complexes supported by macrocyclic tetrapyrrole ligands represent an important platform for nitrene transfer catalysis and have been applied to both C-H amination and olefin aziridination catalysis. The reactivity of the transient high-valent Mn nitrenoids that mediate these processes renders characterization of these species challenging. Here we report the synthesis and nitrene transfer photochemistry of a family of Mn^III N-haloamide complexes. The S=2 N-haloamide complexes are characterized by ¹ H NMR, UV-vis, IR, high-frequency and -field EPR (HFEPR) spectroscopies, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Photolysis of these complexes results in the formal transfer of a nitrene equivalent to both C-H bonds, such as the α-C-H bonds of tetrahydrofuran, and olefinic substrates, such as styrene, to afford aminated and aziridinated products, respectively. Low-temperature spectroscopy and analysis of kinetic isotope effects for C-H amination indicate halogen-dependent photoreactivity: Photolysis of N-chloroamides proceeds via initial cleavage of the Mn-N bond to generate Mn^II and amidyl radical intermediates; in contrast, photolysis of N-iodoamides proceeds via N-I cleavage to generate a Mn^IV nitrenoid (i.e., {MnNR}⁷ species). These results establish N-haloamide ligands as viable precursors in the photosynthesis of metal nitrenes and highlight the power of ligand design to provide access to reactive intermediates in group-transfer catalysis.

In crystallo organometallic chemistry

X-ray crystallography is an invaluable tool in design and development of organometallic catalysis, but application typically requires species to display sufficiently high solution concentrations and lifetimes for single crystalline samples to be obtained. In crystallo organometallic chemistry relies on chemical reactions that proceed within the single-crystal environment to access crystalline samples of reactive organometallic fragments that are unavailable by alternate means. This highlight describes approaches to in crystallo organometallic chemistry including (a) solid-gas reactions between transition metal complexes in molecular crystals and diffusing small molecules, (b) reactions of organometallic complexes within the extended lattices of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and (c) intracrystalline photochemical transformations to generate reactive organometallic fragments. Application of these methods has enabled characterization of catalytically important transient species, including σ-alkane adducts of transition metals, metal alkyl intermediates implicated in metal-catalyzed carbonylations, and reactive M-L multiply bonded species involved in C-H functionalization chemistry. Opportunities and challenges for in crystallo organometallic chemistry are discussed.

Iron-catalyzed stereoselective haloamidation of amide-tethered alkynes

In this work, by using N-methoxybenzamides as efficient acyl nitrene precursors, an iron-catalyzed formal cis-haloamidation of alkyne is reported. Without assistance of additives, the reaction worked well in the presence of 50 mol% FeCl3 or FeBr3, leading to a series of chloro/bromo-containing isoindolin-5-ones with high efficiency and wide reaction scope. In the reaction, the iron-facilitated haloamidation proceeds through a halo anion-participating concerted [3+2] cyclization to release the final products. The key intermediate ferric acyl nitrene A is generated in situ from a formal removal of MeOH.

Spectroscopic Evidence of Hyponitrite Radical Intermediate in NO Disproportionation at a MOF-Supported Mononuclear Copper Site

Dianionic hyponitrite (N₂ O₂ ^2- ) is often proposed, based on model complexes, as the key intermediate in reductive coupling of nitric oxide to nitrous oxide at the bimetallic active sites of heme-copper oxidases and nitric oxide reductases. In this work, we examine the gas-solid reaction of nitric oxide with the metal-organic framework Cu^I -ZrTpmC* with a suite of in situ spectroscopies and density functional theory simulations, and identify an unusual chelating N₂ O₂ ^.- intermediate. These results highlight the advantage provided by site-isolation in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for studying important reaction intermediates, and provide a mechanistic scenario compatible with the proposed one-electron couple in these enzymes.

Selectivity of Rh⋅⋅⋅H-C Binding in a σ-Alkane Complex Controlled by the Secondary Microenvironment in the Solid State

Single-crystal to single-crystal solid-state molecular organometallic (SMOM) techniques are used for the synthesis and structural characterization of the σ-alkane complex [Rh(tBu2 PCH2 CH2 CH2 PtBu2 )(η2 ,η2 -C7 H12 )][BArF 4 ] (ArF =3,5-(CF3 )2 C6 H3 ), in which the alkane (norbornane) binds through two exo-C-H⋅⋅⋅Rh interactions. In contrast, the bis-cyclohexyl phosphine analogue shows endo-alkane binding. A comparison of the two systems, supported by periodic DFT calculations, NCI plots and Hirshfeld surface analyses, traces this different regioselectivity to subtle changes in the local microenvironment surrounding the alkane ligand. A tertiary periodic structure supporting a secondary microenvironment that controls binding at the metal site has parallels with enzymes. The new σ-alkane complex is also a catalyst for solid/gas 1-butene isomerization, and catalyst resting states are identified for this.

In Crystallo Snapshots of Rh2-Catalyzed C-H Amination

While X-ray crystallography routinely provides structural characterization of kinetically stable pre-catalysts and intermediates, elucidation of the structures of transient reactive intermediates, which are intimately engaged in bond-breaking and -making during catalysis, is generally not possible. Here, we demonstrate in crystallo synthesis of Rh₂ nitrenoids that participate in catalytic C-H amination, and we characterize these transient intermediates as triplet adducts of Rh₂. Further, we observe the impact of coordinating substrate, which is present in excess during catalysis, on the structure of transient Rh₂ nitrenoids. By providing structural characterization of authentic C-H functionalization intermediates, and not kinetically stabilized model complexes, these experiments provide the opportunity to define critical structure-activity relationships.

Scalable Synthesis of Esp and Rhodium(II) Carboxylates from Acetylacetone and RhCl3·xH2O

Rhodium(II) carboxylates are privileged catalysts for the most challenging carbene-, nitrene-, and oxo-transfer reactions. In this work, we address the strategic challenges of current organic and inorganic synthesis methods to access these rhodium(II) complexes through an oxidative rearrangement strategy and a reductive ligation reaction. These studies illustrate the multiple benefits of oxidative rearrangement in the process-scale synthesis of congested carboxylates over nitrile anion alkylation reactions, and the impressive effect of inorganic additives in the reductive ligation of rhodium(III) salts.

C-H Amination Mediated by Cobalt Organoazide Adducts and the Corresponding Cobalt Nitrenoid Intermediates

Treatment of (^ArL)CoBr (^ArL = 5-mesityl-1,9-(2,4,6-Ph₃C₆H₂)dipyrrin) with a stoichiometric amount of 1-azido-4-(tert-butyl)benzene N₃(C₆H₄-p-^tBu) furnished the corresponding four-coordinate organoazide-bound complex (^ArL)CoBr(N₃(C₆H₄-p-^tBu)). Spectroscopic and structural characterization of the complex indicated redox innocent ligation of the organoazide. Slow expulsion of dinitrogen (N₂) was observed at room temperature to afford a ligand functionalized product via a [3 + 2] annulation, which can be mediated by a high-valent nitrene intermediate such as a Co^III iminyl (^ArL)CoBr(^•N(C₆H₄-p-^tBu)) or Co^IV imido (^ArL)CoBr(N(C₆H₄-p-^tBu)) complex. The presence of the proposed intermediate and its viability as a nitrene group transfer reagent are supported by intermolecular C-H amination and aziridination reactivities. Unlike (^ArL)CoBr(N₃(C₆H₄-p-^tBu)), a series of alkyl azide-bound Co^II analogues expel N₂ only above 60 °C, affording paramagnetic intermediates that convert to the corresponding Co-imine complexes via α-H-atom abstraction. The corresponding N₂-released structures were observed via single-crystal-to-crystal transformation, suggesting formation of a Co-nitrenoid intermediate in solid-state. Alternatively, the alkyl azide-bound congeners supported by a more sterically accessible dipyrrinato scaffold ^tBuL (^tBuL = 5-mesityl-(1,9-di-tert-butyl)dipyrrin) facilitate intramolecular 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition as well as C-H amination to furnish 1,2,3-dihydrotriazole and substituted pyrrolidine products, respectively. For the C-H amination, we observe that the temperature required for azide activation varies depending on the presence of weak C-H bonds, suggesting that the alkyl azide adducts serve as viable species for C-H amination when the C-H bonds are (1) proximal to the azide moiety and (2) sufficiently weak to be activated.

Homo- and Hetero-Oligonuclear Complexes of Platinum Group Metals (PGM) Coordinated by Imine Schiff Base Ligands

Chemistry of Schiff base (SB) ligands began in 1864 due to the discovery made by Hugo Schiff (Schiff, H., Justus Liebigs Ann. der Chemie 1864, 131 (1), 118-119). However, there is still a vivid interest in coordination compounds based on imine ligands. The aim of this paper is to review the most recent concepts on construction of homo- and hetero-oligonuclear Schiff base coordination compounds narrowed down to the less frequently considered complexes of platinum group metals (PGM). The combination of SB and PGM in oligonuclear entities has several advantages over mononuclear or polynuclear species. Such complexes usually exhibit better electroluminescent, magnetic and/or catalytic properties than mononuclear ones due to intermetallic interactions and frequently have better solubility than polymers. Various construction strategies of oligodentate imine ligands for coordination of PGM are surveyed including simple imine ligands, non-innocent 1,2-diimines, chelating imine systems with additional N/O/S atoms, classic N2O2-compartmental Schiff bases and their modifications resulting in acyclic fused ligands, macrocycles such as calixsalens, metallohelical structures, nano-sized molecular wheels and hybrid materials incorporating mesoionic species. Co-crystallization and formation of metallophilic interactions to extend the mononuclear entities up to oligonuclear coordination species are also discussed.
