Quantifying near-symmetric molecular distortion using symmetry-coordinate structural decomposition

We imagine molecules to be perfect, but rigidified units can be designed to bend from their ideal shape, discarding their symmetric elements as they progress through vibrations and larger, more permanent distortions. The shape of molecules is either simulated or measured by crystallography and strongly affects chemical properties but, beyond an image or tabulation of atom-to-atom distances, little is often discussed of the accessed conformation. We have simplified the process of shape quantification across multiple molecular types with a new web-accessible program - SCSD - through which a molecular subunit possessing near-symmetry can be dissected into symmetry coordinates with ease. This parameterization allows a common set of numbers for comparing and understanding molecular shape, and is a simple method for database analysis; this program is available at https://www.kingsbury.id.au/scsd.

Synthesis and Characterization of Isostructural Th(IV) and U(IV) Pyridine Dipyrrolide Complexes

A series of pyridine dipyrrolide actinide(IV) complexes, (MesPDPPh)AnCl2(THF) and An(MesPDPPh)2 (An = U, Th, where (MesPDPPh) is the doubly deprotonated form of 2,6-bis(5-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)-3-phenyl-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)pyridine), have been prepared. Characterization of all four complexes has been performed through a combination of solid- and solution-state methods, including elemental analysis, single crystal X-ray diffraction, and electronic absorption and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies. Collectively, these data confirm the formation of the mono- and bis-ligated species. Time-dependent density functional theory has been performed on all four An(IV) complexes, providing insight into the nature of electronic transitions that are observed in the electronic absorption spectra of these compounds. Room temperature, solution-state luminescence of the actinide complexes is presented. Both Th(IV) derivatives exhibit strong photoluminescence; in contrast, the U(IV) species are nonemissive.

Computational study of core modified dipyriamethyrin for the competitive complexation of Am3+/Cm3+ from their trichlorides

In the process of handling and storage of radioactive actinides it is essential to selectively sequester the minor actinides, such as Am and Cm, through a competitive complexation process. Herein we computationally designed two core modified ligands (L21- and L3) through systematic oxygen substitution at the NH sites of dipyriamethyrin (L1_2H), a hexadentate expanded porphyrin, and studied their competitive complexation towards trivalent actinides (An = Am/Cm) from their trichlorides using density functional theory (DFT). We observed shorter An-N bonds and longer An-O bonds in complexes based on core modified ligands (L21- and L3). The An-Cl bond length increases with increasing axial coordination number (i.e., from L12- to L3) to accommodate the ligands. All the bonds were identified to be electrostatic in nature. L12- exhibits shorter bonds and larger bond orders on complexing with Am than with Cm. On moving from complexes of L21- to L3, the An-N bond lengths are shortened, while An-O bond lengths become larger. Between the complexes of Am and Cm, there is marginal difference in their bond distances with L21- and L3. Charge analysis shows ligand to metal charge transfer during coordination, with back-donation from An to N/O and Cl. The calculated spin-density analysis indicates that An remains in its trivalent oxidation state on complexation, while orbital occupation analysis shows that the 5f and 6d orbitals are involved in bonding; this was confirmed by molecular orbital (MO) analysis that shows the complexes of L21- and L3 to exhibit higher degeneracy in their overlapping MOs. Further, the energy decomposition analysis (EDA) confirms that all ionic bonds are primarily due to electrostatic contributions, where the orbital contributions increase from L12- to L3 complexes and maximum covalency was observed in Cm complexes due to the energy matching between the 5f orbitals of Cm and the 2p orbitals of N and Cl, compared to Am. To confirm the competitiveness in the complexation of the ligand towards Am vs. Cm, the thermodynamic parameters were analysed for the ligand and metal substitution reactions. L12- shows more affinity towards Am than Cm, while L21- and L3 prefer Cm.

Cyclopentadienyl capped thorium(IV) porphyrinoid complex

The reaction between Th(IV) dipyriamethyrin dichloride and sodium cyclopentadienyl (Cp) results in the formation of a cyclopentadienyl capped thorium dipyriamethyrin complex, which to our knowledge represents the first expanded porphyrin f-element Cp complex.

Syntheses of Thiophene-Thiophene-Linked Corrorin Dimers with Tunable Near-Infrared Absorption and Distinctive Reactivity

Thiahexaphyrinone 1 and thia-dipyrrin-appended corrorin 2 have been synthesized. Surprisingly, further oxidation of compound 2 with 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ) in dichloromethane afforded dimer 3 with two molecules of compound 2 linked at the α-carbon atoms of the thienyl units. Treatment of compound 3 with DDQ in MeOH and SnCl2 in tetrahydrofuran/H2O afforded the dimethoxy-attached dimer 4 and hydrogenated dihydroxy-attached dimer 5, respectively. These results provide the first examples for synthesizing thiophene-linked porphyrinoid dimers with tunable near-infrared absorption and chirality.

Synthesis and comparison of iso-structural f-block metal complexes (Ce, U, Np, Pu) featuring η6-arene interactions

Reaction of the terphenyl bis(anilide) ligand [{K(DME)₂}₂L^Ar] (L^Ar = {C₆H₄[(2,6-ⁱPr²C₆H₃)NC₆H₄]₂}^2-) with trivalent chloride "MCl₃" salts (M = Ce, U, Np) yields two distinct products; neutral L^ArM(Cl)(THF) (1^M) (M = Np, Ce), and the "-ate" complexes [K(DME)₂][(L^Ar)Np(Cl)₂] (2^Np) or ([L^ArM(Cl)₂(μ-K(X)₂)])_∞ (2^Ce, 2^U) (M = Ce, U) (X = DME or Et₂O) (2^M). Alternatively, analogous reactions with the iodide [MI₃(THF)₄] salts provide access to the neutral compounds L^ArM(I)(THF) (3^M) (M = Ce, U, Np, Pu). All complexes exhibit close arene contacts suggestive of η⁶-interactions with the central arene ring of the terphenyl backbone, with 3^M comprising the first structurally characterized Pu η⁶-arene moiety. Notably, the metal-arene bond metrics diverge from the predicted trends of metal-carbon interactions based on ionic radii, with the uranium complexes exhibiting the shortest M-C_centroid distance in all cases. Overall, the data presents a systematic study of f-element M-η⁶-arene complexes across the early actinides U, Np, Pu, and comparison to cerium congeners.

Periodic Trends in the Stabilization of Actinyls in Their Higher Oxidation States Using Pyrrophen Ligands

Owing to the prominent existence and unique chemistry of actinyls, their complexation with suitable ligands is of significant interest. The complexation of high-valent actinyl moieties (An = U, Np, Pu and Am) with the acyclic sal-porphyrin analogue called "pyrrophen" (L₍₁₎) and its dimethyl derivative (L₍₂₎) with four nitrogen and two oxygen donor atoms was studied using relativistic density functional theory. Based on the periodic trends, the [U^VO₂-L₍₁₎/L₍₂₎]^1- complexes show shorter bond lengths and higher bond orders that increase across the series of pentavalent actinyl complexes mainly due to the localization of the 5f orbitals. Among the hexavalent complexes, the [U^VIO₂-L₍₁₎/L₍₂₎] complexes have the shortest bonds. Following the uranyl complex, due to the plutonium turn, the [Am^VIO₂-L₍₁₎/L₍₂₎] complexes exhibit comparable properties with those of the former. Charge analysis suggests the complexation to be facilitated through ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) mainly through σ donation. Thermodynamic feasibility of complexation was modeled using hydrated actinyl moieties in aqueous medium and was found to be spontaneous. The dimethylated pyrrophen (L₍₂₎) shows higher magnitudes of thermodynamic parameters indicating increased feasibility compared to the unsubstituted ligand (L₍₁₎). Energy decomposition analysis (EDA) along with extended transition-state-natural orbitals for chemical valence theory (ETS-NOCV) analysis shows that the dominant electrostatic contributions decrease across the series and are counteracted by Pauli repulsion. Slight but considerable covalency is provided to hexavalent actinyl complexes by orbital contributions; this was confirmed by molecular orbital (MO) analysis that suggests strong covalency in americyl (VI) complexes. In addition to the pentavalent and hexavalent actinyl moieties, heptavalent actinyl species of neptunyl, plutonyl, and americyl were studied. Beyond the influence of the charges, the geometric and electronic properties point to the stabilization of neptunyl (VII) in the pyrrophen ligand environment, while the others shift to a lower (+VI) and relatively stable OS on complexation.

Trends in the Electronic Structure and Chemical Bonding of a Series of Porphyrinoid-Uranyl Complexes

In this paper, we have explored the relativistic density functional theory study on a series of deprotonated porphyrinoid (Lⁿ) complexes of uranyl to investigate the geometrical structures and chemical bonding. The ligands bound with uranyl in the 1:1 complexes [UO₂(Lⁿ)]^x (n = 4, 5, 6; x = 0, -1, -2), showing more thermodynamic stability for "in-cavity" structures of L⁵ and L⁶ than that of the "side-on" structure of L⁴ and an increase in stability with the increase of negative charges, L^2- < L^3- < L^4-. Among the six ligands, the cyclo[6]pyrrole presents the best selectivity toward uranyl. Based on chemical bonding analyses, the U-N_L bond in the in-cavity complexes adopts a typical dative N_L → U bond with mainly ionic bonding and significant covalency, which comes from the significant orbital interaction of U 5f_ϕ6d_δ7s hybrid AOs and N_L 2p-based MOs. This work provides a systematic understanding of the coordination chemistry in uranyl pyrrole-containing macrocycle complexes and the nature of chemical bonding in such systems, which may provide inspirations for the future design of synthetic targets that could be relevant to actinide separations or in the remediation of spent nuclear fuel.

Understanding the Coordination Chemistry of AmIII/CmIII in the DOTA Cavity: Insights from Energetics and Electronic Structure Theory

The minor actinides Am/Cm show multiple possibilities for coordination, providing great opportunities for their extraction and adsorption separation. Herein, we report complexation in an aqueous medium of Am^III/Cm^III in the DOTA (H₄DOTA = 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid) cavity with axial ligands (OH^-, F^-, and H₂O), based on the energetics and electronic structure properties using density functional theory (DFT). The formation and substitution reactions of OH^--capped complexes are more likely to occur due to their enhanced hydration Gibbs free energies, followed by F^-, and then H₂O. Both the longer An-O_DOTA bond lengths and the larger bite angle (∠O-An-O) in the OH^--capped complexes reflect the enhanced coordination provided by the axial ligand, slightly less so for F^-. Energy decomposition analysis based on the electronic structure supports the preference for OH^--capped complexes with a near-perfect balance between attractive and repulsive contributions toward the interaction. Furthermore, molecular orbital analysis revealed that the frontier molecular orbitals of Am and Cm complexes are substantially different; that is, the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) compositions of the Am complexes are all contributed by 5f, while the HOMO and LUMO compositions of the Cm complexes are derived from 5f and 6d, respectively. Finally, the metal-exchange reactions demonstrate competitive complexation of DOTA toward Am^III over Cm^III for the OH^--capped system. These results imply the importance of coordination chemistry in actinide chemistry in general and specifically in Am^III/Cm^III solution chemistry.

Actinide-Oxygen Multiple Bonds from Air: Synthesis and Characterization of a Thorium Oxo Supported by Redox-Active Ligands

The first non-uranyl, f-element oxo complex synthesized from dioxygen in dry air is presented in this work. The synthesis was accomplished by treating the redox-active thorium amidophenolate complex, [Th(^dippap)₃][K(15-c-5)₂]₂ (1-ap crown), with dioxygen in dry air, forming a rare terminal thorium oxo, [O═Th(^dippisq)₂(^dippap)][K(15-c-5)₂]₂ (2-oxo). Compound 1-ap crown was regenerated by treating 2-oxo with potassium graphite. X-ray crystallography of 2-oxo revealed a comparatively longer bond length for the thorium-oxygen double bond when compared to other thorium oxos. As such, several thorium-oxygen single bonds were synthesized for comparison, including Th(^dippisq)₂(OSiMe₃)₂(THF) (4-OSiMe₃), Th(OSiMe₃)₄(bipy)₂ (5-OSiMe₃), and [Th(OH)₂ (^dippHap)₄][K(15-c-5)₂]₂ (6-OH). Full spectroscopic and structural characterization of the complexes was performed via ¹H NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, EPR spectroscopy, and electronic absorption spectroscopy as well as SQUID magnetometry, which all confirmed the electronic structure of these complexes.

Chemical bonding in actinyl(V/VI) dipyriamethyrin complexes for the actinide series from americium to californium: a computational investigation

The separation of minor actinides in their dioxocation (i.e., actinyl) form in high-valence oxidation states requires efficient ligands for their complexation. In this work, we evaluate the complexation properties of actinyls including americyl, curyl, berkelyl, and californyl in their pentavalent and hexavalent oxidation states with the dipyriamethyrin ligand (L) using density functional theory calculations. The calculated bond parameters show shorter AnO_yl bonds with covalent character and longer An-N bonds with ionic character. The bonding between the actinyl cation and the ligand anion shows a flow of charges from the ligand to actinyl in all [An^V/VIO₂-L]^1-/0 complexes. However, across the series, backdonation of charges from the metal to the ligand becomes prominent and stabilizes the complexes. The thermodynamic parameters in the gas phase and solution suggest that the complex formation reaction is spontaneous for [Cf^V/VIO₂-L]^1-/0 complexes and spontaneous at elevated temperatures (>298.15 K) for all other complexes. Spin-orbit corrections have a quantitative impact while the overall trend remains the same. Energy decomposition analysis (EDA) reveals that the interaction between actinyl and the ligand is mainly due to electrostatic contributions that decrease from Am to Cf along with an increase in orbital contributions due to the backdonation of charges from the actinyl metal center to the ligand that greatly stabilizes the Cf complex. The repulsive Pauli energy contribution is observed to increase in the case of [An^VO₂-L]^1- complexes from Am to Cf while a decrease is observed among [An^VIO₂-L]⁰ complexes, showing minimum repulsion in [Cf^VIO₂-L]⁰ complex formation. Overall, the hexavalent actinyl complexes show greater stability (increasing from Am to Cf) than their pentavalent counterparts.

Porphyrinoid actinide complexes

The diverse coordination modes and electronic features of actinide complexes of porphyrins and related oligopyrrolic systems (referred to as "porpyrinoids") have been the subject of interest since the 1960s. Given their stability and accessibility, most work with actinides has focused on thorium and uranium. This trend is also seen in the case of porphyrinoid-based complexation studies. Nevertheless, the diversity of ligand environments provided by porphyrinoids has led to the stabilization of a number of unique complexes with the early actinides that are often without structural parallel within the broader coordination chemical lexicon. This review summarizes key examples of prophyrinoid actinide complexes reported to date, including the limited number of porphyrinoid systems involving transuranic elements. The emphasis will be on synthesis and structure; however, the electronic features and reactivity pattern of representative systems will be detailed as well. Coverage is through December of 2021.

Stable Chelation of the Uranyl Ion by Acyclic Hexadentate Ligands: Potential Applications for 230U Targeted α-Therapy

Uranium-230 is an α-emitting radionuclide with favorable properties for use in targeted α-therapy (TAT), a type of nuclear medicine that harnesses α particles to eradicate cancer cells. To successfully implement this radionuclide for TAT, a bifunctional chelator that can stably bind uranium in vivo is required. To address this need, we investigated the acyclic ligands H2dedpa, H2CHXdedpa, H2hox, and H2CHXhox as uranium chelators. The stability constants of these ligands with UO22+ were measured via spectrophotometric titrations, revealing log βML values that are greater than 18 and 26 for the "pa" and "hox" chelators, respectively, signifying that the resulting complexes are exceedingly stable. In addition, the UO22+ complexes were structurally characterized by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. Crystallographic studies reveal that all six donor atoms of the four ligands span the equatorial plane of the UO22+ ion, giving rise to coordinatively saturated complexes that exclude solvent molecules. To further understand the enhanced thermodynamic stabilities of the "hox" chelators over the "pa" chelators, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed. The use of the quantum theory of atoms in molecules revealed that the extent of covalency between all four ligands and UO22+ was similar. Analysis of the DFT-computed ligand strain energy suggested that this factor was the major driving force for the higher thermodynamic stability of the "hox" ligands. To assess the suitability of these ligands for use with 230U TAT in vivo, their kinetic stabilities were probed by challenging the UO22+ complexes with the bone model hydroxyapatite (HAP) and human plasma. All four complexes were >95% stable in human plasma for 14 days, whereas in the presence of HAP, only the complexes of H2CHXdedpa and H2hox remained >80% intact over the same period. As a final validation of the suitability of these ligands for radiotherapy applications, the in vivo biodistribution of their UO22+ complexes was determined in mice in comparison to unchelated [UO2(NO3)2]. In contrast to [UO2(NO3)2], which displays significant bone uptake, all four ligand complexes do not accumulate in the skeletal system, indicating that they remain stable in vivo. Collectively, these studies suggest that the equatorial-spanning ligands H2dedpa, H2CHXdedpa, H2hox, and H2CHXhox are highly promising candidates for use in 230U TAT.

Metal templated synthesis of a dipyridazinamethyrin and its properties

Presented here is the stepwise and one-pot synthesis of a dipyridazinamethyrin, 1. In either synthetic route, a proper metal cation template was found necessary. 1H NMR and UV-Vis absorption studies suggest this macrocycle exhibits a non-aromatic nature. DFT calculations suggest that the optimized structure of this macrocycle is slightly ruffled rather than planar.

Role of O Substitution in Expanded Porphyrins on Uranyl Complexation: Orbital- and Density-Based Analyses

Search for new U(VI) sequestering macrocyclic ligands is an important area of research due to manifold applications. Besides hard- or soft-donor-based ligands, mixed-donor ligands are also gaining popularity in achieving optimized performances. However, how the combination of hard-soft-donor centers alters the bonding interactions with U(VI) is still not well-understood. Moreover, a consensus is yet to be reached on the nature and role of underlying covalent interactions in mixed N,O-donor ligands. In this work, using the relativistic density functional theory (DFT), we attempted to address these intriguing issues by investigating the subtle change in bonding characteristics of the uranyl ion upon binding with an expanded porphyrin, viz. sapphyrin, with subsequent O substitutions at the cavity. The results obtained from a range of modern analysis tools suggest that in the O-substituted sapphyrin variants, UO₂²⁺ prefers to bind with N over O, and an increase in the number of O-donor sites at the cavity prompts UO₂²⁺ to have a better interaction with the rest of the N-donor-centers. Although O donors are involved in more numbers of mixed molecular orbitals, the variation in the amplitude of overlap and the better σ-donation ability favor N to have stronger bonding interactions with uranyl. Molecular orbital (MO) and density of states (DOS) analyses show favorable participation of U(d), and the involvement of U(f) orbitals in bonding is of a low extent but non-negligible. Although electrostatic interaction dominates at U-O/N bonds in the equatorial plane, the quantum theory of atoms in molecules descriptors, MO analysis, and overlap-integral calculations confirm the presence of underlying near-degeneracy-driven covalent interactions.

Pentanuclear Thorium(IV) Coordination Cluster from the Use of Di(2-pyridyl) Ketone

The Th(NO₃)₄·5H₂O/di(2-pyridyl) ketone [(py)₂CO] reaction system gives a pentanuclear cluster containing the doubly deprotonated form of the gem-diol derivative of the ligand. The cluster consists of a tetrahedral arrangement of four Th^IV ions centered on the fifth ion, which is the first characterized Th^IV₅ complex. The analysis of its structure reveals that this is a Kuratowski-type coordination compound.

Synthesis and Characterizations of a Plutonium(III) Crown Ether Inclusion Complex

We report the synthesis, single-crystal structure, solid-state ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations on the first trivalent plutonium crown ether inclusion complex, [(H₃O)(18-crown-6)][Pu(H₂O)₄(18-crown-6)](ClO₄)₄·2(H₂O) (denoted as Pu^III-18C6). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that Pu^III-18C6 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group of Pccn, which is assembled by independent ionic pairs including [Pu(H₂O)₄(18-crown-6)]³⁺, [(H₃O)(18-crown-6)]⁺, and perchlorate anions. The plutonium atom is fully encapsulated within the cavity of the 18-crown-6, generating a distorted bicapped square antiprism geometry. The theoretical evaluation confirms that weak Pu-O dative bond is involved between Pu^III ions with 18-crown-6. This work may deepen the understanding of the host-guest interactions between trivalent transuranic and macrocyclic ligands.

Coordination of trivalent lanthanum and cerium, and tetravalent cerium and actinides (An = Th(IV), U(IV), Np(IV)) by a 4-phosphoryl 1H-pyrazol-5-olate ligand in solution and the solid state

Structural investigations of three actinide(iv) 4-phosphoryl 1H-pyrazol-5-olate complexes (An = Th(iv), U(iv), Np(iv)) and their cerium(iv) analogue display the same metal coordination in the solid state. The mononuclear complexes show the metal centre in a square antiprismatic coordination geometry composed by the two O-donor atoms of four deprotonated ligands. Detailed solid state analysis of the U(iv) complex shows that dependent on the solvent used altered arrangements are observable, resulting in a change in the coordination polyhedron of the U(iv) metal centre to bi-capped trigonal prismatic. Further, single crystal analyses of the La(iii) and Ce(iii) complexes show that the ligand can also act as a neutral ligand by protonation of the pyrazolyl moiety. All complexes were comprehensively characterized by NMR, IR and Raman spectroscopy. A single resonance in each of the 31P NMR spectra for the La(iii), Ce(iii), Ce(iv), Th(iv) and Np(iv) complex indicates the formation of highly symmetric complex species in solution. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) investigations provide evidence for the same local structure of the U(iv) and Np(iv) complex in toluene solution, confirming the observations made in the solid state.

Computational Study of Actinyl Ion Complexation with Dipyriamethyrin Macrocyclic Ligands

Relativistic density functional theory has been employed to characterize [AnO₂(L)]^0/-1 complexes, where An = U, Np, Pu, and Am, and L is the recently reported hexa-aza porphyrin analogue, termed dipyriamethyrin, which contains six nitrogen donor atoms (four pyrrolic and two pyridine rings). Shorter axial (An═O) and longer equatorial (An-N) bond lengths are observed when going from An^VI to An^V. The actinide to pyrrole nitrogen bonds are shorter as compared to the bonds to the pyridine nitrogens; the former also play a dominant role in the formation of the actinyl (VI and V) complexes. Natural population analysis shows that the pyrrole nitrogen atoms in all the complexes carry higher negative charges than the pyridine nitrogens. Upon binding actinyl ions with the ligand a significant ligand-to-metal charge transfer takes place in all the actinyl (VI and V) complexes. The formation energy of the actinyl(VI,V) complexes in the gas-phase is found to decrease in the order of UO₂L > PuO₂L > NpO₂L > AmO₂L. This trend is consistent with results for the formation of complexes in dichloromethane solution. The calculated ΔG and ΔH values are negative for all the complexes. Energy decomposition analysis (EDA) indicates that the interactions between actinyl(V/VI) and ligand are mainly controlled by electrostatic components over covalent orbital interactions, and the covalent character gradually decreases from U to Am for both pentavalent and hexavalent actinyl complexes.

Detailed characterization of dioxouranium(vi) complexes with a symmetrical tetradentate N2O2-benzil bis(isonicotinoyl hydrazone) ligand

The reactions of UO2(OAc)2·2H2O with benzil bis(isonicotinoyl hydrazone) ligand (H2L) in varied solvent media resulted in the formation of a series of new dioxouranium(vi) complexes 1-3 of the type UO2(L)(X), [where 1, X = DMF; 2, X = DMSO; 3, X = H2O]. The complexes were systematically characterized by elemental analysis, UV-Visible spectroscopy, TGA, mass spectrometry, cyclic voltammetry, and powder X-ray diffraction study. Among all the complexes, 1 was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction study. It was found that 1 preferred a distorted pentagonal bipyramidal geometry, in which an equatorial coordination plane was formed by the ONNO-tetradentate cavity of the deprotonated hydrazone ligand along with an additional oxygen atom of the coordinated solvent molecule. Thermal analysis suggested that complexes 1 and 3 undergo weight loss in the temperature range 180-210 °C and 100-120 °C, respectively, due to the ready release of their coordinated solvent molecules. Complexes 1-3 exhibited analogous UV-Visible absorption bands and the intense band between 300-600 nm was assigned to the M ← L and n → π* transitions. Weakly resolved reduction waves assigned to {UO2}2+/{UO2}+ couple were observed for complexes 1 and 2 {1, -1.76 V; 2, -1.75 V; vs. ferrocenium/ferrocene (Fc+/Fc)} in DMSO solution, signifying the feeble electron-donating nature of the L2- ligand. Powder X-ray diffraction study suggested that the crystallite size of all the complexes was in the nanoscale range. Further analysis using density functional theory (DFT) calculations provided structural insights as well as information on the electronic properties of both complex 1 and the ligand.

Enantiomerically Pure Tetravalent Neptunium Amidinates: Synthesis and Characterization

The synthesis of a tetravalent neptunium amidinate [NpCl((S)-PEBA)3 ] (1) ((S)-PEBA=(S,S)-N,N'-bis-(1-phenylethyl)-benzamidinate) is reported. This complex represents the first structurally characterized enantiopure transuranic compound. Reactivity studies with halide/pseudohalides yielding [NpX((S)-PEBA)3 ] (X=F (2), Br (3), N3 (4)) have shown that the chirality-at-metal is preserved for all compounds in the solid state. Furthermore, they represent an unprecedented example of a structurally characterized metal-organic Np complex featuring a Np-Br (3) bond. In addition, 4 is the only reported tetravalent transuranic azide. All compounds were additionally characterized in solution using para-magnetic NMR spectroscopy showing an expected C3 -symmetry at low temperatures.

Pyrrophens: Pyrrole-Based Hexadentate Ligands Tailor-Made for Uranyl (UO22+) Coordination and Molecular Recognition

Derivatives of a novel pyrrole-containing Schiff base ligand system (called "pyrrophen") are presented which feature substituted phenylene linkers (R¹ = R² = H (H₂L¹); R¹ = R² = CH₃ (H₂L²)) and a binding pocket modeled after macrocyclic species. These ligands bind neutral CH₃OH in the solid state through pyrrolic hydrogen-bonding. The interaction of the uranyl cation (UO₂²⁺) and H₂L^1-2 yields planar hexagonal bipyramdial uranyl complexes, while the Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺ complexes were found to self-assemble as dinuclear helicate complexes (M₂L₂) with H₂L¹ under identical conditions. The favorable binding of UO₂²⁺ over Zn²⁺ provides insight into the molecular recognition of uranyl over other metal species. Structural features of these complexes are examined with special attention to features of the UO₂²⁺ coordination environment which distinguish them from other related salophen and porphyrinoid complexes.

Siamese-Twin Porphyrin Goes Platinum: Group 10 Monometallic, Homobimetallic, and Heterobimetallic Complexes

A series of Pt^II-based monometallic (H₂PtL), homobimetallic (Pt₂L), and heterobimetallic (NiPtL and PdPtL) group 10 complexes of the previously established expanded twin porphyrin (H₄L) were prepared. Structural characterization of the bimetallic Pt^II series (Pt₂L, NiPtL, and PdPtL) revealed their similar general structures, with slight differences correlated to the ion size. An improvement of the metal-ion insertion process also allowed efficient preparation of the known Pd₂L complex, and the novel heterobimetallic NiPdL complex was also structurally characterized. UV-vis spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, magnetic circular dichroism (MCD), and (spectro)electrochemistry were used to characterize the complexes; the electronic properties followed largely established lines for metal complexes of the twin porphyrin, except that the Pt^II-based systems exhibited more complex UV-vis spectral signatures. MCD spectra accompanied by density functional theory (DFT)/time-dependent DFT computations (TDDFT) rationalize the origins of the optical features of the twin porphyrin. The presence of the nonplanar, nonaromatic macrocyclic π system with conjugation pathways confined to each half of the molecule could be visualized. Significant pyrazole(π) → pyrrole(π*) charge-transfer character was predicted for several transitions in the visible region. This study adds to our fundamental understanding of the formation, structure, and electronic structure of bimetallic complexes of this class of expanded metalloporphyrins containing nonpyrrolic moieties.

Synthesis and Characterization of a Binuclear Copper(II)-dipyriamethyrin Complex: [Cu2(dipyriamethyrin)(μ2-1,1-acetato)2]

The reaction between dipyriamethyrin and copper(II) acetate [Cu(OAc)₂] afforded what is, to our knowledge, the first transition metal-dipyriamethyrin complex. Molecular and electronic characterization of this binuclear Cu(II) complex via EPR, UV-vis, and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed marked differences between the present constructs and previously reported binuclear copper(II) hexaphyrin species. UV-vis titration analyses provided evidence for a homotropic positive allosteric effect, wherein the binuclear species is formed without significant intermediacy of a monomeric complex.
