Non-Catalytic Benefits of Ni(II) Binding to an Si(111)-PNP Construct for Photoelectrochemical Hydrogen Evolution Reaction: Metal Ion Induced Flat Band Potential Modulation

Tailoring Second Coordination Sphere for Tunable Solid-Liquid Interfacial Charge Transfer toward Enhanced Photoelectrochemical H2 Production

The recombination of photogenerated charge carriers severely limits the performance of photoelectrochemical (PEC) H2 production. Here, we demonstrate that this limitation can be overcome by optimizing the charge transfer dynamics at the solid-liquid interface via molecular catalyst design. Specifically, the surface of a p-Si photocathode is modulated using molecular catalysts with different metal atoms and organic ligands to improve H2 production performance. Co(pda-SO3H)2 is identified as an efficient and durable catalyst for H2 production through the rational design of metal centers and first/second coordination spheres. The modulation with Co(pda-SO3H)2, which contains an electron-withdrawing -SO3H group in the second coordination sphere, elevates the flat-band potential of the polished p-Si photocathode and nanoporous p-Si photocathode by 81 mV and 124 mV, respectively, leading to the maximized energy band bending and the minimized interfacial carrier transport resistance. Consequently, both the two photocathodes achieve the Faradaic efficiency of more than 95 % for H2 production, which is well maintained during 18 h and 21 h reaction, respectively. This work highlights that the band-edge engineering by molecular catalysts could be an important design consideration for semiconductor-catalyst hybrids toward PEC H2 production.

Semiconductor Band Structure, Symmetry, and Molecular Interface Hybridization for the Chemist

Merging molecular bonding concepts with semiconductor- and materials-based concepts of band structure is challenging due to the mutually exclusive historical development and notations used in those respective fields: symmetry adapted linear combinations (SALCs) and Mulliken terms for molecules, versus k space and Bloch sums for materials. This lack of commonality brings the issue of hybridization (aka electronic coupling) between molecules and materials to the forefront in many aspects of modern chemical research─including nanocrystal properties, solar energy conversion, and molecular computing. It is thus critical to establish a holistic approach to hybridizing orbital (molecule) and plane-wave (semiconductor/material) systems to better describe symmetry-based molecule|material bonding and the corresponding symmetry-adapted molecular orbital (MO) diagrams. Such a unified approach would enable the construction of testable hypotheses about the role of symmetry and electronic structure in determining the extent of electronic coupling between molecular orbitals and semiconductor band structure. This Perspective provides an analysis and compendium of "translations" between the physics and chemistry language of group theory. In this vein, this approach describes the symmetries─and corresponding point groups─that occur in k space along the available descent in symmetry pathways (k space vectors). As a result, chemists may arrive at a more intuitive understanding of the band symmetries of semiconductors, as well as insights into the corresponding algebraic formulations. This analysis can ultimately generate MO diagrams for hybrid molecule|material systems. Lastly, an Outlook provides some context to the application of this analysis to modern problems at the interface of molecular and materials chemistry.

Multi-Electron Transfer at H-Terminated p-Si Electrolyte Interfaces: Large Photovoltages under Inversion Conditions

Photovoltages for hydrogen-terminated p-Si(111) in an acetonitrile electrolyte were quantified with methyl viologen [1,1'-(CH₃)₂-4,4'-bipyridinium](PF₆)₂, abbreviated MV²⁺, and [Ru(bpy)₃](PF₆)₂, where bpy is 2,2'-bipyridine, that respectively undergo two and three one-electron transfer reductions. The reduction potentials, E°, of the two MV²⁺ reductions occurred at energies within the forbidden bandgap, while the three [Ru(bpy)₃]²⁺ reductions occurred within the continuum of conduction band states. Bandgap illumination resulted in reduction that was more positive than that measured with a degenerately doped n⁺-Si demonstrative of a photovoltage, V_ph, that increased in the order MV^2+/+ (260 mV) < MV^+/0 (400 mV) < Ru^2+/+ (530 mV) ∼ Ru^+/0 (540 mV) ∼ Ru^0/- (550 mV). Pulsed 532 nm excitation generated electron-hole pairs whose dynamics were nearly constant under depletion conditions and increased markedly as the potential was raised or lowered. A long wavelength absorption feature assigned to conduction band electrons provided additional evidence for the presence of an inversion layer. Collectively, the data reveal that the most optimal photovoltage, as well as the longest electron-hole pair lifetime and the highest surface electron concentration, occurs when E° lies energetically within the unfilled conduction band states where an inversion layer is present. The bell-shaped dependence for electron-hole pair recombination with the surface potential was predicted by the time-honored SRH model, providing a clear indication that this interface provides access to all four bias conditions, i.e., accumulation, flat band, depletion, and inversion. The implications of these findings for photocatalysis applications and solar energy conversion are discussed.

Surface Immobilization of a Re(I) Tricarbonyl Phenanthroline Complex to Si(111) through Sonochemical Hydrosilylation

A sonochemical-based hydrosilylation method was employed to covalently attach a rhenium tricarbonyl phenanthroline complex to silicon(111). fac-Re(5-(p-Styrene)-phen)(CO)₃Cl (5-(p-styrene)-phen = 5-(4-vinylphenyl)-1,10-phenanthroline) was reacted with hydrogen-terminated silicon(111) in an ultrasonic bath to generate a hybrid photoelectrode. Subsequent reaction with 1-hexene enabled functionalization of remaining atop Si sites. Attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirms attachment of the organometallic complex to silicon without degradation of the organometallic core, supporting hydrosilylation as a strategy for installing coordination complexes that retain their molecular integrity. Detection of Re(I) and nitrogen by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) further support immobilization of fac-Re(5-(p-styrene)-phen)(CO)₃Cl. Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy under white light illumination indicate that fac-Re(5-(p-styrene)-phen)(CO)₃Cl undergoes two electron reductions. Mott-Schottky analysis indicates that the flat band potential is 239 mV more positive for p-Si(111) co-functionalized with both fac-Re(5-(p-styrene)-phen)(CO)₃Cl and 1-hexene than when functionalized with 1-hexene alone. XPS, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, and Mott-Schottky analysis show that functionalization with fac-Re(5-(p-styrene)-phen)(CO)₃Cl and 1-hexene introduces a negative interfacial dipole, facilitating reductive photoelectrochemistry.

Molecular-Modified Photocathodes for Applications in Artificial Photosynthesis and Solar-to-Fuel Technologies

Nature offers inspiration for developing technologies that integrate the capture, conversion, and storage of solar energy. In this review article, we highlight principles of natural photosynthesis and artificial photosynthesis, drawing comparisons between solar energy transduction in biology and emerging solar-to-fuel technologies. Key features of the biological approach include use of earth-abundant elements and molecular interfaces for driving photoinduced charge separation reactions that power chemical transformations at global scales. For the artificial systems described in this review, emphasis is placed on advancements involving hybrid photocathodes that power fuel-forming reactions using molecular catalysts interfaced with visible-light-absorbing semiconductors.

Molecular Catalysts with Diphosphine Ligands Containing Pendant Amines

Pendant amines play an invaluable role in chemical reactivity, especially for molecular catalysts based on earth-abundant metals. As inspired by [FeFe]-hydrogenases, which contain a pendant amine positioned for cooperative bifunctionality, synthetic catalysts have been developed to emulate this multifunctionality through incorporation of a pendant amine in the second coordination sphere. Cyclic diphosphine ligands containing two amines serve as the basis for a class of catalysts that have been extensively studied and used to demonstrate the impact of a pendant base. These 1,5-diaza-3,7-diphosphacyclooctanes, now often referred to as "P₂N₂" ligands, have profound effects on the reactivity of many catalysts. The resulting [Ni(P^R₂N^R'₂)₂]²⁺ complexes are electrocatalysts for both the oxidation and production of H₂. Achieving the optimal benefit of the pendant amine requires that it has suitable basicity and is properly positioned relative to the metal center. In addition to the catalytic efficacy demonstrated with [Ni(P^R₂N^R'₂)₂]²⁺ complexes for the oxidation and production of H₂, catalysts with diphosphine ligands containing pendant amines have also been demonstrated for several metals for many different reactions, both in solution and immobilized on surfaces. The impact of pendant amines in catalyst design continues to expand.

6-Aza-2-thio-thymine-gold nanoclusters: an excellent candidate in the photoelectrochemical field

The high performance of the photoelectrochemical (PEC) properties of AuNCs can be achieved with 6-aza-2-thio-thymine-AuNCs (ATT-AuNCs) as a photoactive material. The ATT-AuNCs yielded a cathodic photocurrent density as high as 88 μA cm^-2 with O₂ as electron acceptor, which is three orders of magnitude higher than those of other AuNCs in aqueous solutions. Moreover, ATT-AuNCs also show a higher carrier density, shorter Debye length, and smaller depletion layer width than those of reported AuNCs. This work not only reveals the PEC performance and mechanism of ATT-AuNCs, but also establishes a framework for in-depth design and studying the PEC performance of AuNCs.

Through-Space Electrostatic Effects of Positively Charged Substituents on the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Elucidating the effects of various structural components on energy-related small molecule activation is of fundamental and practical significance. Herein the inhibition effect of positively charged substituents on the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) was reported. With the use of Cu porphyrins 1-5 containing different numbers and locations of positively charged substituents, it was demonstrated that their electrocatalytic HER activities significantly decreased when more cationic units were located close to the Cu ion: the i_cat /i_p (i_cat is the catalytic peak current, i_p is the one-electron reduction peak current) value decreased from 38 with zero cationic unit to 15 with four closely located cationic units. Inspired by this result, Cu porphyrin 6, with four meso-phenyl groups each bearing a negatively charged para-sulfonic substituent, was designed. With these anionic units, 6 outperformed the other Cu porphyrins for electrocatalytic HER under the same conditions.

A photoelectrochemical biosensor based on methylene blue sensitized Bi5O7I for sensitive detection of PSA

Herein, bismuth oxyiodide (Bi₅O₇I) was used as a signal probe to construct an effective sensitization structure with methylene blue (MB), combined with protein conversion strategy, and a photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensor was constructed for sensitive detection of prostate-specific antigen (PSA). The designed biosensor had a high sensitivity and a low detection limit (LOD) of 0.047 fg mL^-1, which opened up a simple way for the detection of PSA and showed a good application prospect in clinical and medical fields.

Phenolic water toxins: redox mechanism and method of their detection in water and wastewater

Phenolic pollutants are highly toxic and persistent in the environment. Their efficient detection is a pressing social demand. In this regard we introduce a novel ultrasensitive electroanalytical platform for the individual and synchronized detection of three phenolic isomers commonly known as hydroquinone (HQ), resorcinol (RC), and catechol (CC). The sensing device consists of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with functionalized carbon nanotubes (fCNTs) and gold-silver (Au-Ag NPs) bimetallic nanoparticles. The sandwiched scaffold represented as fCNTs/Au-Ag NPs/fCNTs/GCE efficiently senses HQ, RC, and CC with detection limits of 28.6 fM, 36.5 fM and 42.8 fM respectively. The designed sensor is more promising than reported sensors for phenolic toxins in the context of high sensitivity, selectivity, and rapid responsiveness. The designed sensor also shows the qualities of stability, reproducibility, reliability, and selective recognition capacity for target analytes in multiple real water samples. Moreover, computational calculations explain the function of the electrode modifier in facilitating charge transfer between the transducer and analytes.

Approaching Industrially Relevant Current Densities for Hydrogen Oxidation with a Bioinspired Molecular Catalytic Material

Integration of efficient platinum-group-metal (PGM)-free catalysts to fuel cells and electrolyzers is a prerequisite to their large-scale deployment. Here, we describe the development of a molecular-based anode for the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) through noncovalent integration of a DuBois type Ni bioinspired molecular catalyst at the surface of a carbon nanotube modified gas diffusion layer. This mild immobilization strategy enabled us to gain high control over the loading in catalytic sites. Additionally, through the adjustment of the hydration level of the active layer, a new record current density of 214 ± 20 mA cm^-2 could be reached at 0.4 V vs RHE with the PGM-free anode, at 25 °C. Near industrially relevant current densities were obtained at 55 °C with 150 ± 20 and 395 ± 30 mA cm^-2 at 0.1 and 0.4 V overpotentials, respectively. These results further demonstrate the relevance of such molecular approaches for the development of electrocatalytic platforms for energy conversion.

Immobilising molecular Ru complexes on a protective ultrathin oxide layer of p-Si electrodes towards photoelectrochemical CO2 reduction

Photoelectrochemical CO2 reduction is a promising approach for renewable fuel generation and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Owing to their synthetic tunability, molecular catalysts for the CO2 reduction reaction can give rise to high product selectivity. In this context, a RuII complex [Ru(HO-tpy)(6-mbpy)(NCCH3)]2+ (HO-tpy = 4'-hydroxy-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine; 6-mbpy = 6-methyl-2,2'-bipyridine) was immobilised on a thin SiOx layer of a p-Si electrode that was decorated with a bromide-terminated molecular layer. Following the characterisation of the assembled photocathodes by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and ellipsometry, PEC experiments demonstrate electron transfer from the p-Si to the Ru complex through the native oxide layer under illumination and a cathodic bias. A state-of-the-art photovoltage of 570 mV was determined by comparison with an analogous n-type Si assembly. While the photovoltage of the modified photocathode is promising for future photoelectrochemical CO2 reduction and the p-Si/SiOx junction seems to be unchanged during the PEC experiments, a fast desorption of the molecular Ru complex was observed. An in-depth investigation of the cathode degradation by comparison with reference materials highlights the role of the hydroxyl functionality of the Ru complex to ensure its grafting on the substrate. In contrast, no essential role for the bromide function on the Si substrate designed to engage with the hydroxyl group of the Ru complex in an SN2-type reaction could be established.
