Distinct Role of Surface Hydroxyls in Single-Atom Pt1/CeO2 Catalyst for Room-Temperature Formaldehyde Oxidation: Acid-Base Versus Redox

Facilely Fabricated Single-Site Ptδ+-O(OH)x- Species Associated with Alkali on Zirconia Exhibiting Superior Catalytic Oxidation Reactivity

Fabrication of robust isolated atom catalysts has been a research hotspot in the environment catalysis field for the removal of various contaminants, but there are still challenges in improving the reactivity and stability. Herein, through facile doping alkali metals in Pt catalyst on zirconia (Pt-Na/ZrO2), the atomically dispersed Ptδ+-O(OH)x- associated with alkali metal via oxygen bridge was successfully fabricated. This novel catalyst presented remarkably higher CO and hydrocarbon (HCs: C3H8, C7H8, C3H6, and CH4) oxidation activity than its counterpart (Pt/ZrO2). Systematically direct and solid evidence from experiments and density functional theory calculations demonstrated that the fabricated electron-rich Ptδ+-O(OH)x- related to Na species rather than the original Ptδ+-O(OH)x-, serving as the catalytically active species, can readily react with CO adsorbed on Ptδ+ to produce CO2 with significantly decreasing energy barrier in the rate-determining step from 1.97 to 0.93 eV. Additionally, owing to the strongly adsorbed and activated water by Na species, those fabricated single-site Ptδ+-O(OH)x- linked by Na species could be easily regenerated during the oxidation reaction, thus considerably boosting its oxidation reactivity and durability. Such facile construction of the alkali ion-linked active hydroxyl group was also realized by Li and K modification which could guide to the design of efficient catalysts for the removal of CO and HCs from industrial exhaust.

Insights into the roles of superficial lattice oxygen in formaldehyde oxidation on birnessite

K+-modified birnessite materials were constructed to remove formaldehyde (HCHO) in this work. The introduction of K+ led to weakening of the Mn-O bonds and enhanced the migration of superficial lattice oxygen, resulting in improved redox properties and catalytic activity. MnO2-3K with the largest specific surface area and greatest abundance of superficial lattice oxygen showed the best catalytic performance at 30-130 °C. The operando analyses reveal that HCHO is primarily activated to dioxymethylene (DOM) and subsequently converted to formate species (*COOH). The accumulation of formate species caused a decline in catalytic performance during extended testing at 30 °C, a challenge that could be mitigated by raising the temperature. Theoretical studies disclose that the *COOH → *H2CO3 step with the largest energy barrier is the rate limiting step for HCHO deep decomposition. Molecular oxygen could be activated at oxygen vacancies to replenish the depleted lattice oxygen after decomposition of carbonate species (*H2CO3) and CO2 and H2O desorption. The adsorbed oxygen and water did not limit the deep oxidation of HCHO. This research presents a promising approach for designing highly efficient, non-noble metal catalysts for formaldehyde degradation.

Formaldehyde Ambient-Temperature Decomposition over Pd/Mn3O4-MnO Driven by Active Sites' Self-Tandem Catalysis

The widespread presence of formaldehyde (HCHO) pollutant has aroused significant environmental and health concerns. The catalytic oxidation of HCHO into CO2 and H2O at ambient temperature is regarded as one of the most efficacious and environmentally friendly approaches; to achieve this, however, accelerating the intermediate formate species formation and decomposition remains an ongoing obstacle. Herein, a unique tandem catalytic system with outstanding performance in low-temperature HCHO oxidation is proposed on well-structured Pd/Mn3O4-MnO catalysts possessing bifunctional catalytic centers. Notably, the optimized tandem catalyst achieves complete oxidation of 100 ppm of HCHO at just 18 °C, much better than the Pd/Mn3O4 (30%) and Pd/MnO (27%) counterparts as well as other physical tandem catalysts. The operando analyses and physical tandem investigations reveal that HCHO is primarily activated to gaseous HCOOH on the surface of Pd/Mn3O4 and subsequently converted to H2CO3 on the Pd/MnO component for deep decomposition. Theoretical studies disclose that Pd/Mn3O4 exhibits a favorable reaction energy barrier for the HCHO → HCOOH step compared to Pd/MnO; while conversely, the HCOOH → H2CO3 step is more facilely accomplished over Pd/MnO. Furthermore, the nanoscale intimacy between two components enhances the mobility of lattice oxygen, thereby facilitating interfacial reconstruction and promoting interaction between active sites of Pd/Mn3O4 and Pd/MnO in local vicinity, which further benefits sustained HCHO tandem catalytic oxidation. The tandem catalysis demonstrated in this work provides a generalizable platform for the future design of well-defined functional catalysts for oxidation reactions.

Electron Donation from Boron Suboxides via Strong p-d Orbital Hybridization Boosts Molecular O2 Activation on Ru/TiO2 for Low-Temperature Dibromomethane Oxidation

Low-temperature catalytic oxidation is of significance to the degradation of halogenated volatile organic compounds (HVOCs) to avoid hazardous byproducts with low energy consumption. Efficient molecular oxygen (O2) activation is pivotal to it but usually limited by the insufficient electron cloud density at the metal center. Herein, Ru-B catalysts with enhanced electron density around Ru were designed to achieve efficient O2 activation, realizing dibromomethane (DBM) degradation T90 at 182 °C on RuB1/TiO2 (about 30 °C lower than pristine Ru/TiO2) with a TOFRu value of 0.055 s-1 (over 8 times that of Ru/TiO2). Compared to the limited electron transfer (0.02 e) on pristine Ru/TiO2, the Ru center gained sufficient negative charges (0.31 e) from BOx via strong p-d orbital hybridization. The Ru-B site then acted as the electron donor complexing with the 2π* antibonding orbital of O2 to realize the O2 dissociative activation. The reactive oxygen species formed thereby could initiate a fast conversion and oxidation of formate intermediates, thus eventually boosting the low-temperature catalytic activity. Furthermore, we found that the Ru-B sites for O2 activation have adaptation for pollutant removal and multiple metal availability. Our study shed light on robust O2 activation catalyst design based on electron density adjustment by boron.

Efficient Exciton Dissociation on Ceria Chelated Cerium-Based MOF Isogenous S-Scheme Photocatalyst for Acetaldehyde Purification

Long-term exposure to low concentration indoor VOCs of acetaldehyde (CH3 CHO) is harmful to human health. Thus, a novel isogenous heterojunction CeO2 /Ce-MOF photocatalyst is synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method for the effective elimination of CH3 CHO in this work. This CeO2 /Ce-MOF photocatalyst performs well in CH3 CHO removal and achieves an apparent quantum efficiency of 7.15% at 420 nm, which presents ≈6.7 and 3.4 times superior to those generated by CeO2 and Ce-MOF, respectively. The enhanced efficiency is due to two main aspects including i) an effective photocarrier separation ability and the prolonged reaction lifetime of excitons play crucial roles and ii) the formation of an internal electric field (IEF) is sufficient to overcome the considerable exciton binding energy, and increases the exciton dissociation efficiency by up to 50.4%. Moreover, the reasonable pathways and mechanisms of CH3 CHO degradation are determined by in situ DRIFTS analysis and simulated DFT calculations. Those results demonstrated that S-scheme heterojunction successfully increases the efficiency of harmful volatile organic compounds elimination, and it offers essential guidance for designing rare earth-based MOF photocatalysts.

Tuning the Interaction between Platinum Single Atoms and Ceria by Zirconia Doping for Efficient Catalytic Ammonia Oxidation

Aiming at the development of an efficient NH3 oxidation catalyst to eliminate the harmful NH3 slip from the stationary flue gas denitrification system and diesel exhaust aftertreatment system, a facile ZrO2 doping strategy was proposed to construct Pt1/CexZr1-xO2 catalysts with a tunable Pt-CeO2 interaction strength and Pt-O-Ce coordination environment. According to the results of systematic characterizations, Pt species supported on CexZr1-xO2 were mainly in the form of single atoms when x ≥ 0.7, and the strength of the Pt-CeO2 interaction and the coordination number of Pt-O-Ce bond (CNPt-O-Ce) on Pt1/CexZr1-xO2 showed a volcanic change as a function of the ZrO2 doping amount. It was proposed that the balance between the reasonable concentration of oxygen defects and limited surface Zr-Ox species well accounted for the strongest Pt-CeO2 interaction and the highest CNPt-O-Ce on Pt/Ce0.9Zr0.1O2. It was observed that the Pt/Ce0.9Zr0.1O2 catalyst exhibited much higher NH3 oxidation activity than other Pt/CexZr1-xO2 catalysts. The mechanism study revealed that the Pt1 species with the stronger Pt-CeO2 interaction and higher CNPt-O-Ce within Pt/Ce0.9Zr0.1O2 could better activate NH3 adsorbed on Lewis acid sites to react with O2 thus resulting in superior NH3 oxidation activity. This work provides a new approach for designing highly efficient Pt/CeO2 based catalysts for low-temperature NH3 oxidation.

Formulating the Li sites of Li-CoOx composites for achieving high-efficiency oxidation removal of formaldehyde over the Ag/Li-CoOx catalyst under ambient conditions

Oxide supported noble metals are extensively investigated for ambient formaldehyde oxidation, and the Ag-CoOx complex is one promising combination in terms of cost and activity. Further, we previously observed that cooperating Ag with Li + greatly boosted formaldehyde degradation on CoOx. Yet, there is still room for improvement in removal efficiency, mineralization capacity and resistance to severe conditions. These objectives could be realized via strategically formulating the Li+ sites of Li-CoOx composite in this sister study. Three samples with Li + ---Co3+-O2- connections (L-CO), spinel Li+ (LCO-S) and layered Li+ (LCO-L) were obtained at low (300 °C), moderate (500 °C) and high (700 °C) temperatures, respectively. The specific Li+ positions and componential interaction were demonstrated by Hyperspectral imaging (HSI), XRD, SEM, TEM, HAADF mapping, UV-vis DRS and XPS. Moreover, the effect of reactive oxygen exposure on catalytic oxidation of formaldehyde (330-350 mg/m3) was disclosed through CO-TPR and O2-TPD. Compared with the LCO-S and LCO-L, L-CO exhibited dominant formaldehyde degradation due to the larger content of surface oxygen. After Ag decoration, the Li+---Co3+-O2- connections uniquely caused a strong binding of Ag species with catalyst host, which boosted the amount of reactive oxygen and finally resulted in an even higher elimination of ∼73% (CO2 yield = ∼21%), 47% higher than that of the L-CO (CO2 yield = ∼6%). But in contrast, the Ag@LCO-S only achieved ∼53% removal (CO2 yield = ∼9%) and Ag modification was powerless in altering the inertness of LCO-L, demonstrating that the chemical environment of alkali metal is crucial to effectively tuning the catalyst activity. The advantage of Ag@L-CO in formaldehyde depollution was further reflected from its much better resistance to moisture and aromatic compound omnipresent in indoor air. For the first time, this study extended the understanding of the alkali-metal-promoted formaldehyde oxidation reaction to an in-depth level.

What is the role of interface in the catalytic elimination of multi-carbon air pollutants?

Multi-carbon air pollutants pose serious hazards to the environment and health, especially soot and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Catalytic oxidation is one of the most effective technologies for eliminating them. The oxidation of soot and most hydrocarbon VOCs begins with C-H (or edge-CH) activation, so this commonality can be targeted to design active sites. Rationally designed interface nanostructures optimize metal-support interactions (MSIs), providing suitable active sites for C-H activation. Meanwhile, the interfacial reactant spillover facilitates the further decomposition of activated intermediates. Thus, rationally exploiting interfacial effects is critical to enhancing catalytic activity. In this review, we analyzed recent advances in the following aspects: I. Understanding of the interface effects and design; II. Optimization of the catalyst-reactant contact, metal-support interface, and MSIs; III. Design of the interfacial composition and perimeter. Based on the analysis of the advances and current status, we provided challenges and opportunities for the rational design of interface nanostructures and interface-related stability. Meanwhile, a critical outlook was given on the interfacial sites of single-atom catalysts (SACs) for specific activation and catalytic selectivity.

Memory-dictated dynamics of single-atom Pt on CeO2 for CO oxidation

Single atoms of platinum group metals on CeO₂ represent a potential approach to lower precious metal requirements for automobile exhaust treatment catalysts. Here we show the dynamic evolution of two types of single-atom Pt (Pt₁) on CeO₂, i.e., adsorbed Pt₁ in Pt/CeO₂ and square planar Pt₁ in Pt_ATCeO₂, fabricated at 500 °C and by atom-trapping method at 800 °C, respectively. Adsorbed Pt₁ in Pt/CeO₂ is mobile with the in situ formation of few-atom Pt clusters during CO oxidation, contributing to high reactivity with near-zero reaction order in CO. In contrast, square planar Pt₁ in Pt_ATCeO₂ is strongly anchored to the support during CO oxidation leading to relatively low reactivity with a positive reaction order in CO. Reduction of both Pt/CeO₂ and Pt_ATCeO₂ in CO transforms Pt₁ to Pt nanoparticles. However, both catalysts retain the memory of their initial Pt₁ state after reoxidative treatments, which illustrates the importance of the initial single-atom structure in practical applications.

Effect of MnO2 Crystal Type on the Oxidation of Furfural to Furoic Acid

The base-free oxidation of furfural by non-noble metal systems has been challenging. Although MnO2 emerges as a potential catalyst application in base-free conditions, its catalytic efficiency still needs to be improved. The crystalline form of MnO2 is an important factor affecting the oxidation ability of furfural. For this reason, four crystalline forms of MnO2 (α, β, γ, and δ-MnO2) were selected. Their oxidation performance and surface functional groups were analyzed and compared in detail. Only δ-MnO2 exhibited excellent activity, achieving 99.04% furfural conversion and 100% Propo.FA (Only furoic acid was detected by HPLC in the product) under base-free conditions, while the furfural conversion of α, β, and γ-MnO2 was below 10%. Characterization by XPS, IR, O2-TPD and other means revealed that δ-MnO2 has the most abundant active oxygen species and surface hydroxyl groups, which are responsible for the best performance of δ-MnO2. This work achieves the green and efficient oxidation of furfural to furoic acid over non-noble metal catalysts.

Recent progresses on single-atom catalysts for the removal of air pollutants

The booming industrialization has aggravated emission of air pollutants, inflicting serious harm on environment and human health. Supported noble-metals are one of the most popular catalysts for the oxidation removal of air pollutants. Unfortunately, the high price and large consumption restrict their development and practical application. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) emerge and offer an optimizing approach to address this issue. Due to maximal atom utilization, tunable coordination and electron environment and strong metal-support interaction, SACs have shown remarkable catalytic performance on many reactions. Over the last decade, great potential of SACs has been witnessed in the elimination of air pollutants. In this review, we first briefly summarize the synthesis methods and modulation strategies together with the characterization techniques of SACs. Next, we highlight the application of SACs in the abatement of air pollutants including CO, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and NOx, unveiling the related catalytic mechanism of SACs. Finally, we propose the remaining challenges and future perspectives of SACs in fundamental research and practical application in the field of air pollutant removal.

Enhanced Formaldehyde Oxidation Performance of the Mesoporous TiO2(B)-Supported Pt Catalyst: The Role of Hydroxyls

As one of the crystal phases of titania, TiO2(B) was first utilized as a catalyst carrier for the oxidation of formaldehyde (HCHO). The mesoporous TiO2(B) loaded with Pt nanoparticles enhanced the HCHO oxidation reaction whose reaction rate was 4.5-8.4 times those of other crystalline TiO2-supported Pt catalysts. Simultaneously, Pt/TiO2(B) exhibited long-term stable HCHO oxidation performance. The structural characterization results showed that in comparison with Pt/anatase, Pt/TiO2(B) had more abundant hydroxyls, facilitating increasing the content of oxygen species. Studies on the role of hydroxyls in HCHO oxidation of Pt/TiO2(B) illustrated that synergistic involvement of terminally bound hydroxyls and bridging hydroxyls in HCHO oxidation accelerated the transformation from HCHO to formate via dioxymethylene. Moreover, hydroxyls could avoid the accumulation of excessive formate on Pt/TiO2(B) and promote the rapid oxidation of CO. Accordingly, the hydroxyl groups could accelerate each substep of formaldehyde oxidation, which enabled Pt/TiO2(B) to exhibit excellent formaldehyde oxidation performance.
