Light Responsiveness and Assembly of Arylazopyrazole-Based Surfactants in Neat and Mixed CTAB Micelles

Accurately recognizing chromium species with multi-functionalized nano Au-based sensor array

High-resolution identification of chromium (Cr) species, especially various organic-Cr complexes, in a convenient and economically-feasible manner is the prerequisite for achieving the advanced treatment of chromium wastewater. To this end, a colorimetric nano-Au sensor array was developed by taking advantage of the UV-spectra shift of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) upon interaction with Cr species; specifically, four molecular modifiers [i.e., iminodiacetic acid (IDA), tripolyphosphate (TPP), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), and 1,5-diphenylcarbazide (DPC)] were intentionally employed for assembling nano-Au array receptors, which showed respective responses toward different Cr species through the formation of coordination, hydrophobic interaction, electrostatic attraction, and redox reaction, respectively; the "fingerprint" differences of the unique optical properties were then integrated for semi-quantitatively recognizing Cr species by pattern recognition techniques. Eleven ubiquitous Cr species [i.e., Cr(III), Cr(VI), and various Cr(III)-organic complexes] served as the model samples, which could be sensitively identified, no matter in individual or mixture mode, by the developed nano-Au sensor array on the basis of the colorimetric responses resulted from diverse nano-Au-aggregation behaviors, with excellent anti-interference ability in the simulated or actual water scenario. Attractively, the nano-Au sensor array can achieve very sensitive detection limit of the quantitative analyses of Cr species in a prompt in-situ manner, which usually requires a two-step process of separation and detection for the conventional analytical methods. Such a convenient strategy of Cr species discrimination conduces to rationally designing specific protocols for the advanced treatment of chromium wastewater.

Understanding X-ray-induced isomerisation in photoswitchable surfactant assemblies

Dynamic, responsive materials can be built using photosurfactants (PS) that self-assemble into ordered nanostructures, such as micelles or liquid crystals. These PS contain photoswitchable groups, such as azobenzene (Azo) or, more recently, arylazopyrazoles (AAPs), which change shape and polarity on photoisomerisation between the E and Z states, thus changing the self-assembled structure. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) is a powerful technique to probe the morphology of PS and can be used to measure the mechanisms of structural changes using in-situ light irradiation with rapid, time-resolved data collection. However, X-ray irradiation has been shown previously to induce Z-to-E isomerisation of Azo-PS, which can lead to inaccuracies in the measured photostationary state. Here, we investigate the effect of light and X-ray irradiation on micelles formed from two different PS, containing either an Azo or AAP photoswitch using SAXS with in-situ light irradiation. The effect of X-ray irradiation on the Z isomer is shown to depend on the photoswitch, solvent, concentration and morphology. We use this to create guidelines for future X-ray experiments using photoswitchable molecules, which can aid more accurate understanding of these materials for application in solar energy storage, catalysis or controlled drug delivery.

Light-Driven Hexagonal-to-Cubic Phase Switching in Arylazopyrazole Lyotropic Liquid Crystals

Photoinduced manipulation of the nanoscale molecular structure and organization of soft materials can drive changes in the macroscale properties. Here we demonstrate the first example of a light-induced one- to three-dimensional mesophase transition at room temperature in lyotropic liquid crystals constructed from arylazopyrazole photosurfactants in water. We exploit this characteristic to use light to selectively control the rate of gas (CO2) diffusion across a prototype lyotropic liquid crystal membrane. Such control of phase organization, dimensionality, and permeability unlocks the potential for stimuli-responsive analogues in technologies for controlled delivery.

Monitoring the response of a model protocell to dye and surfactant molecules through second harmonic generation and fluorescence imaging

Probing the interaction between molecules and protocells is crucial for understanding the passive transport of functional molecules in and out of artificial and real cells. Second-harmonic generation (SHG) has been proven to be a powerful method for analyzing the adsorption and cross-membrane transport of molecules on lipid bilayers. In this study, we used SHG and two-photon fluorescence (TPF) imaging to study the interaction of charged dye molecules (D289) with a lipid vesicle. Unexpectedly, it was observed that the transport of D289 at a relatively high concentration is not as efficient as that at a lower dye concentration. Periodic shrinking of the model protocell and discharging of D289 out from the vesicle were revealed by combined analyses of SHG and TPF images. The response of the vesicle to a surfactant was also analyzed with D289 as a probe. This work demonstrates that the combined SHG and TPF imaging method is a unique approach that can provide detailed information on the interaction of molecules and lipids (both morphology and molecular kinetics). Determining these subtle interfacial kinetics in molecules is important for understanding the mechanism of many biophysical processes occurring on lipids.

Azoheteroarene and Diazocine Molecular Photoswitches: Self-Assembly, Responsive Materials and Photopharmacology

Aromatic units tethered with an azo (-N=N-) functionality comprise a unique class of compounds, known as molecular photoswitches, exhibiting a reversible transformation between their E- and Z-isomers in response to photo-irradiation. Photoswitches have been explored extensively in the recent past to prepare dynamic self-assembled materials, optoelectronic devices, responsive biomaterials, and more. Most of such materials involve azobenzenes as the molecular photoswitch and to date, SciFinder lists more than 7000 articles and 1000 patents. Subsequently, a great deal of effort has been invested to improve the photo-isomerization efficiency and related mesoscopic properties of azobenzenes. Recently, azoheteroarenes and cyclic azobenzenes, such as arylazopyrazoles, arylazoisoxazoles, arylazopyridines, and diazocines, have emerged as second generation molecular photoswitches beyond conventional azobenzenes. These photoswitches offer distinct photoswitching behavior and responsive properties which make them highly promising candidates for multifaceted applications ranging from photoresponsive materials to photopharmacophores. In this minireview, we introduce the structural refinement and photoresponsive properties of azoheteroarenes and diazocines and summarize the state-of-the-art on utilizing these photoswitches as responsive building blocks in supramolecular assembly, material science and photopharmacology, highlighting their versatile photochemical behavior, enhanced functionality, and latest applications.

Photo-Responsive Control of Adsorption and Structure Formation at the Air-Water Interface with Arylazopyrazoles

Smart interfaces that are responsive to external triggers such as light are of great interest for the development of responsive or adaptive materials and interfaces. Using alkyl-arylazopyrazole butyl sulfonate surfactants (alkyl-AAP) that can undergo E/Z photoisomerization when irradiated with green (E) and UV (Z) lights, we demonstrate through a combination of experiments and computer simulations that there can be surprisingly large changes in surface tension and in the molecular structure and order at air-water interfaces. Surface tensiometry, vibrational sum-frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy, and neutron reflectometry (NR) are applied to the study of custom-synthesized AAP surfactants with octyl- and H-terminal groups at air-water interfaces as a function of their bulk concentration and E/Z configuration. Upon photoswitching, a drastic influence of the alkyl chain on both the surface activity and the responsiveness of interfacial surfactants is revealed from changes in the surface tension, γ, where the largest changes in γ are observed for octyl-AAP (Δγ ∼ 23 mN/m) in contrast to H-AAP with Δγ < 10 mN/m. Results from vibrational SFG spectroscopy and NR show that the interfacial composition and the molecular order of the surfactants drastically change with E/Z photoisomerization and surface coverage. Indeed, from analysis of the S-O (head group) and C-H vibrational bands (hydrophobic tail), a qualitative analysis of orientational and structural changes of interfacial AAP surfactants is provided. The experiments are complemented by resolution of thermodynamic parameters such as equilibrium constants from ultra-coarse-grained simulations, which also capture details like island formation and interaction parameters of interfacial molecules. Here, the interparticle interaction ("stickiness") and the interaction with the surface are adjusted, closely reflecting experimental conditions.
