Exploring Isomerism in Isolated Cyclodextrin Oligomers through Trapped Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry

Isomerism of Cyclodextrin Tetramer Induced by Alkali Halide Cluster Ions Observed by Ion Mobility Spectrometry-Mass Spectrometry

Cyclodextrins (CDs) exhibit versatile self-assembly properties due to their hydrophilic and hydrophobic components, with applications such as drug delivery and selective binding. While research on CD self-assembly is extensive, limited studies have explored their aggregation behavior, particularly in interactions with small ionic guests. The present work investigates the structure of β-CD tetramers aggregated with alkali metal chloride clusters using ion mobility spectrometry-mass spectrometry (IMS-MS). The results revealed that diverse structures emerge in the tetramer depending on the alkali metal cluster size. Notably, the doubly charged tetramer exhibits distinct aggregation trends with specific numbers of MCl clusters for Na+ and K+ ions. After initially adopting a bucket-wheel structure with two internal cations, the structure transforms into a new isomer with a tetrahedral configuration upon cluster addition. The formation of the new isomer structure is closely linked to filling the cavity volume with MCl clusters and ionic interactions, which possibly compensate for the weakened hydrogen bonds between CDs. Theoretical calculations further support the structures, showing well-matched collision cross-section (CCS) values compared with the experimental CCS values. This study highlights the role of alkali metal chloride clusters as potential templates, leading to the formation of novel CD assemblies.

A concise guide to chemical reactions of atomically precise noble metal nanoclusters

Nanoparticles (NPs) with atomic precision, known as nanoclusters (NCs), are an emerging field in materials science in view of their fascinating structure-property relationships. Ultrasmall noble metal NPs have molecule-like properties that make them fundamentally unique compared with their plasmonic counterparts and bulk materials. In this review, we present a comprehensive account of the chemistry of monolayer-protected atomically precise noble metal nanoclusters with a focus on the chemical reactions, their diversity, associated kinetics, and implications. To begin with, we briefly review the history of the evolution of such precision materials. Then the review explores the diverse chemistry of noble metal nanoclusters, including ligand exchange reactions, ligand-induced structural transformations, and reactions with metal ions, metal thiolates, and halocarbons. Just as molecules do, these precision materials also undergo intercluster reactions in solution. Supramolecular forces between these systems facilitate the creation of well-defined hierarchical assemblies, composites, and hybrid materials. We conclude the review with a future perspective and scope of such chemistry.

Ion mobility mass spectrometry enables the discrimination of positional isomers and the detection of conformers from cyclic oligosaccharides-metals supramolecular complexes

Cyclic oligosaccharides are well known to interact with various metals, able to form supramolecular complexes with distinct sizes and shapes. However, the presence of various isomers in a sample, including positional isomers and conformers, can significantly impact molecular recognition, encapsulation ability and chemical reactivity. Therefore, it is crucial to have tools for deep samples probing and correlation establishments. The emerging ion mobility mass spectrometry (IM-MS) has the advantages to be rapid and sensitive, but is still in its infancy for the investigation of supramolecular assemblies. In the herein study, it was demonstrated that IM-MS is suitable to discriminate several isomers of cyclodextrins (CD)-metals complexes, used as cyclic oligosaccharide models. In this sense, we investigated branched 6-O-α-glucosyl- or 6-O-α-maltosyl-β-cyclodextrins (G1-β-CD and G2-β-CD) and their purely cyclic isomers: CD8 (γ-CD) and CD9 (δ-CD). The corresponding collision cross section (CCS) values were deducted for the main positive singly and doubly charged species. Experimental CCS values were matched with models obtained from molecular modelling. The high mobility resolving power and resolution enabled discrimination of positional isomers, identification of various conformers and accurate relative content estimation. These results represent a milestone in the identification of carbohydrate conformers that cannot be easily reached by other approaches.
