Abstract
BACKGROUND Gamma-oryzanol (γ-oryzanol) is one of the rice bran oil (RBO) compounds, known as a principal food source throughout the world. In recent numerous experimental studies, γ-oryzanol has been revealed to have several useful pharmacological properties, such as anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, ameliorating unpleasant menopausal symptoms, cholesterol-lowering, improving plasma lipid pattern, etc. Methods: In this study, we reviewed the scientific literature published up until 2020, which has evaluated the biological and pharmacological activity of gamma-oryzanol. This review summarizes the published data found in PubMed, Science Direct, and Scopus. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION The present review attempts to summarize the most related articles about the pharmacological and therapeutic potential from recent studies on γ-oryzanol to gain insights into design further studies to achieve new evidence that confirm the observed effects.

Abstract
Phytosterols have been shown to lower cholesterol levels and to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and other biological activities. However, the high melting point and poor solubility limit their bioavailability and practical application. It is advantageous to modify phytosterols chemically and physically. This article reviews and discusses the chemical and physical modifications of phytosterols, as well as their effects on the bioavailability and possible toxicity in vivo. The current research on chemical modifications is mainly focused on esterification to increase the oil solubility and water solubility. For physical modifications (mainly microencapsulation), there are biopolymer-based, surfactant-based and lipid-based nanocarriers. Both chemical and physical modifications of phytosterols can effectively increase the absorption and bioavailability. The safety of modified phytosterols is also an important issue. Phytosterol esters are generally considered to be safe. However, phytosterol oxides, which may be produced during the synthesis of phytosterol esters, have shown toxicity in animal models. The toxicity of nanocarriers also needs further studies.

Abstract
Increased consumer awareness of health and wellness has promoted a high demand for foods and beverages with functional and therapeutic properties. Cereals, apart from being important staple crops and primary sources of energy and nutrition, are replete with bioactive phytochemicals with health properties. Cereal grains contain a diverse range of bioactive phytochemicals including phenolic compounds, dietary fibers, carotenoids, tocols, phytosterols, γ-oryzanol, and phytic acid and therefore have great potential for processing into functional beverages. Although there are a variety of cereal grain-based beverages produced world-wide, very little scientific and technological attention has been paid to them. In this review, we have discussed cereal grain-based functional beverages based on 3 main categories: cereal grain-based milk alternatives, roasted cereal grain teas, fermented nonalcoholic cereal grain beverages. The processing techniques, health properties and product features of these beverages are elaborated, and the challenges and future perspectives are proposed. As the food market becomes increasingly diverse, cereal grain-based beverages could be a promising new category of health functional beverages in our daily life.

Abstract
This study evaluated the efficacy of extracted rice bran (ERB) in weanling piglets. One hundred forty weanling pigs [(Yorkshire × Landrace) × Duroc] with an average BW of 5.70 ± 1.41 kg (21 d of age) were fed in two phases in a 6-wk experiment. Weanling pigs were allotted to diets containing 0 or 0.1 g kg−1 of ERB, and 0 or 165 mg kg−1 of apramycin according to a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. Both apramycin and ERB supplementation increased growth efficiency (G:F) during phase 1 and overall, respectively (P < 0.05). The apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of dry matter (DM) was increased in response to either ERB or apramycin at wk 2 and 6 (P < 0.05). Supplementation of ERB decreased total cholesterol (TC) and increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) in diets lacking ERB at wk 6 (P < 0.05). Pigs receiving diets supplemented with apramycin reduced Escherichia coli at wk 2 and 6, and Salmonella counts at wk 6 (P < 0.05). Supplementation of ERB increased fecal Lactobacillus and reduced Salmonella counts at wk 6 (P < 0.05). In conclusion, results indicated that dietary supplementation of ERB improved performance in weanling pigs.

Abstract
Gamma-oryzanol (GO) is an abundant dietary antioxidant that is considered to have beneficial effects in cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes. Other potential properties of GO include inhibition of gastric acid secretion and decreased post-exercise muscle fatigue. GO is a unique mixture of triterpene alcohol and sterol ferulates present in rice bran oil, a byproduct of rice processing. GO has been studied by many researchers over the last three decades. In particular, the utility of GO supplementation has been documented in numerous animal models. A large variety of species was examined, and various experimental methodologies and targets were applied. The aim of this study was to summarize the body of research on GO supplementation in animals and to examine possible mechanisms of GO action. Furthermore, while the safety of GO supplementation in animals has been well documented, studies demonstrating pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and efficiency are less clear. The observed differences in these findings are also discussed.

Abstract
Epidemiological studies have clearly shown that whole-grain cereals can protect against obesity, diabetes, CVD and cancers. The specific effects of food structure (increased satiety, reduced transit time and glycaemic response), fibre (improved faecal bulking and satiety, viscosity and SCFA production, and/or reduced glycaemic response) and Mg (better glycaemic homeostasis through increased insulin secretion), together with the antioxidant and anti-carcinogenic properties of numerous bioactive compounds, especially those in the bran and germ (minerals, trace elements, vitamins, carotenoids, polyphenols and alkylresorcinols), are today well-recognised mechanisms in this protection. Recent findings, the exhaustive listing of bioactive compounds found in whole-grain wheat, their content in whole-grain, bran and germ fractions and their estimated bioavailability, have led to new hypotheses. The involvement of polyphenols in cell signalling and gene regulation, and of sulfur compounds, lignin and phytic acid should be considered in antioxidant protection. Whole-grain wheat is also a rich source of methyl donors and lipotropes (methionine, betaine, choline, inositol and folates) that may be involved in cardiovascular and/or hepatic protection, lipid metabolism and DNA methylation. Potential protective effects of bound phenolic acids within the colon, of the B-complex vitamins on the nervous system and mental health, of oligosaccharides as prebiotics, of compounds associated with skeleton health, and of other compounds such as alpha-linolenic acid, policosanol, melatonin, phytosterols and para-aminobenzoic acid also deserve to be studied in more depth. Finally, benefits of nutrigenomics to study complex physiological effects of the 'whole-grain package', and the most promising ways for improving the nutritional quality of cereal products are discussed.

Abstract
Elsholtzia splendens extract-loaded chitosan nanoparticles prepared by ionic gelation were characterized by particle size, zeta potential, entrapment efficiency, and loading efficiency. As the initial concentration of E. splendens extract was increased, the loading efficiency and zeta potential significantly increased, whereas the entrapment efficiency and particle size significantly decreased. The optimum concentration of E. splendens extract for maximum loading efficiency was found to be 0.8 mg/mL. Both free E. splendens extract and E. splendens extract-loaded chitosan nanoparticles showed concentration-dependent antioxidant activity. However, the lipid peroxidation inhibitory activity of E. splendens extract was effectively enhanced when it was entrapped within chitosan nanoparticles. Chitosan nanoparticle encapsulation is therefore a potentially valuable technique for improving the antioxidant activity of E. splendens extract.

Abstract
We used response surface methodology to optimize the preparation conditions of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) microcapsules for maximum entrapment efficiency. Three independent variables were used: the ratio of CLA core material to agar and waxy corn starch wall material (X(1)), the temperature of dispersion fluid (X(2)), and the concentration of emulsifier (X(3)). The optimized values of X(1), X(2), and X(3) were found to be 3.82:6.18, 19.97 degrees C, and 0.34%, respectively. The CLA oxidation stability was significantly protected by microencapsulation. These results suggest that CLA-loaded microcapsules can be used as a means to enhance not only the entrapment efficiency but also the oxidative stability of CLA.
