Effect of soil wetting and drying cycles on metolachlor fate in soil applied as a commercial or controlled-release formulation

Promising Delivery Platform for Smart Pest Control with High Water-Retaining Capacity

Hydrogels have been extensively used in agriculture to improve crop yields for their excellent properties. However, they are currently used either as pesticide delivery platforms or water retention agents alone; the combination of these two functions into one agricultural hydrogel formulation has never been reported, which is crucial to promote sustainable development in agriculture. Herein, using poly(β-cyclodextrin) and adamantane-grafted poly(acrylic acid) (PAA-Ada) as the host and guest, respectively, an easy operating, multi-responsive, and safer hydrogel delivery system for insecticides is fabricated by the host-guest interaction between cyclodextrin and adamantane, which can load uniformly dispersed insecticides (fipronil, imidacloprid, and thiamethoxam) up to 60%. Benefiting from the carboxyl and hydroxyl groups on polymer chains, different temperatures (25, 35, and 45 °C) and pH values (5.0, 6.8, and 10.0) change the intermolecular forces within the hydrogel network and then the diffusion of the content, finally resulting in controlled release behaviors. Besides, this platform can rapidly release the insecticides in the presence of amyloglucosidase due to its ring-opening effect on cyclodextrin. Moreover, this platform exhibits high water-retaining capacity toward soil, which can increase the maximum water absorption of nutrient soil and quartz sand by 31.6 and 13.9%, respectively, and slows down the water loss. Compared with commercial formulation, this smart system reduces the acute toxicity to non-target organism earthworms by 52.4% and improves the efficacy against target organism aphids by 47.3%, showing better durability, lower environmental toxicity, and higher efficiency. To our knowledge, this is the first idea that simultaneously adopts the water-retaining capacity and controlled release ability of hydrogels to improve insecticide efficacy. In this regard, this smart hydrogel platform holds great potentials as slow-release granules with water-holding ability for protection against insect pests, providing an alternative platform for the sustainable development in green agriculture.

Modified Compositions of Micelle–Clay and Liposome–Clay Composites for Optimal Removal from Water of Bacteria and Hydrophobic Neutral Chemicals

The efficiency in water treatment by granulated complexes formed from the clay bentonite with (i) micelles of the cations of octadecyltrimethyl-ammonium (ODTMA) or (ii) liposomes of didodecyldimethyl-ammonium (DDAB) was investigated. The bentonite–ODTMA complexes were synthesized in three variations: I. mass ratio of 68/32, which resulted in an excess of positive charge of half of the clay cation exchange capacity and is denoted “ordinary”; II. complexes having higher loads of ODTMA, denoted “enriched”; and III. “neutral”. These variations were designed to optimize the efficiency and reduce the costs of water treatment. “Ordinary” and “neutral” complexes of DDAB were also synthesized. The “ordinary” complex of ODTMA was shown to be efficient in the removal of anionic/hydrophobic molecules and bacteria. The “enriched” complexes were more active in removal of bacteria from water by filtration due to the higher release of free ODTMA cations, which causes biostatic/biocidal effects. The corresponding “ordinary” and “neutral” complexes of ODTMA and DDAB yielded the same efficiency in removal from water of the neutral and hydrophobic herbicides, S-metolachlor (i) and alachlor (ii), respectively. Model calculations, which considered sorption/desorption and convection yielded simulations and predictions of filtration results of the herbicides. The neutral complexes are advantageous since their production saves about 1/3 of the amount of ODTMA or DDAB, which constitutes the expensive component in the respective composite.

Diverse effects of wetting and drying cycles on soil aggregation: Implications on pesticide leaching

The important effect of soil wetting and drying cycle (WDC) on soil structure, and the consequent effect on pollutant fate is underexplored. We thoroughly investigated the changes in soil structure and in leaching of Alion (indaziflam) and Express (tribenuron methyl), pre and post WDC, from two clayey soils and two loamy soils under different land uses (uncultivated, field crops, and orchards). Soil stability was quantified by an aggregate durability index we recently developed. WDC did not affect the stability of the sandy-loam soils, as expected. However, for the sandy-clay-loam with high CaCO₃ content aggregation was observed. For the clayey soils with similar CaCO₃, aggregation and disaggregation were obtained, for a soil with relatively low and high SOM, respectively. The stability trends are reflected by the ratio between the contents of inorganic carbon and soil organic matter (SOM), CaCO₃/SOM, normalized to the clay content. Aggregation was explained by CaCO₃ cementation, while disaggregation was attributed to high clay content and to alterations in SOM conformation post WDC. These opposite trends, obtained for the two clayey soils, were confirmed by analyzing changes in soil packing employing X-ray tomography (micro-CT). Our results clearly demonstrated that soil aggregation and disaggregation, induced by a WDC, suppresses and enhances herbicide mobility, respectively. However, the effect of WDC on herbicide leaching was not noticeable for Alion upon its high adsorption to a clayey soil, indicating that herbicide physical-chemical properties may dominate. Finally, WDC induces micron-scale changes in aggregate structure, which have a notable effect on pollutant mobility and fate in the environment.

A novel method for evaluating the potential release of trace metals associated with rainfall leaching/runoff from urban soils

The release of pollutants in soils owing to rainfall is a major challenge related to urbanization. Here, urban soils from different functional zones were collected to evaluate the release risk and estimate their annual release amounts of trace metals (Co and Ni) using multiple techniques, including diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT), DGT-induced fluxes in sediments (DIFS) model, and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The results indicate that the average concentration of Co (6.55 mg kg^-1) was slightly lower than that of the local soil background, whereas for Ni, the trend was reversed. Risk assessments based on total concentrations show that the soil samples were uncontaminated with Co while uncontaminated to moderately contaminated with Ni. However, the mobility coefficients indicate that Co posed low to medium risk, while Ni posed low risk. Hence, further investigation of DGT measurements and DIFS model show that the DGT-measured Co and Ni concentrations were lower than the corresponding concentrations in solution, leading to low R values and the partial resupply of Co and Ni from the solid phase. The FTIR spectra and elemental analysis suggest that because of the electrostatic attraction and complexation of the hydrosilicate minerals and organic matters, the metal resupply was restrained, resulting in them being only a partial resupply. Moreover, the mobility of Co was mainly controlled by the resupply ability, response time, and desorption rate; while for Ni, the particle concentration and porosity played important roles in determining mobility. In addition, the release amounts of the trace metals were quantified using the binary mixing equation. The estimated annual release amounts of Co and Ni in Pingshan District were 0.44-3.54 t and 1.93-16.47 t, respectively. This study provides an effective in-situ method for estimating the release amounts of trace metals in soils during rainfall combining DGT and DIFS model.

Impact of rainfall patterns and frequency on the export of pesticides and heavy-metals from agricultural soils

The combined influence of soil characteristics, pollutant aging and rainfall patterns on the export of pollutants from topsoils is poorly understood. We used laboratory experiments and parsimonious modeling to evaluate the impact of rainfall characteristics on the ponding and the leaching of a pollutant mixture from topsoils. The mixture included the fungicide metalaxyl, the herbicide S-metolachlor, as well as copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn). Four rainfall patterns, which differed in their durations and intensities, were applied twice successively with a 7days interval on each soil type. To evaluate the influence of soil type and aging, experiments included crop and vineyard soils and two stages of pollutant aging (0 and 10days). The global export of pollutants was significantly controlled by the rainfall duration and frequency (P<0.01). During the first rainfall event, the longest and most intense rainfall pattern yielded the largest export of metalaxyl (44.5±21.5% of the initial mass spiked in the soils), S-metolachlor (8.1±3.1%) and Cu (3.1±0.3%). Soil compaction caused by the first rainfall reduced in the second rainfall the leaching of remaining metalaxyl, S-metolachlor, Cu and Zn by 2.4-, 2.9-, 30- and 50-fold, respectively. In contrast, soil characteristics and aging had less influence on pollutant mass export. The soil type significantly influenced the leaching of Zn, while short-term aging impacted Cu leaching. Our results suggest that rainfall characteristics predominantly control export patterns of metalaxyl and S-metolachlor, in particular when the aging period is short. We anticipate our study to be a starting point for more systematic evaluation of the dissolved pollutant ponding/leaching partitioning and the export of pollutant mixtures from different soil types in relation to rainfall patterns.

Environmental behaviors of phoxim with two formulations in bamboo forest under soil surface mulching

Phoxim (emulsifiable concentrate (EC) and granules (G)) has been widely used in bamboo forests. The persistence and magnitude of phoxim residues in the crop and soil must be investigated to ensure human and environmental safety. The environmental behaviors of the two formulations were investigated in a bamboo forest under soil surface mulching conditions (CP) and non-covered cultivation conditions (NCP). The half-lives of phoxim in soil under the two conditions in soil were 4.1-6.2days (EC) and 31.5-49.5days (G), respectively. Phoxim in EC could be leached from the topsoil into the subsoil. A minimized leaching effect was observed for G under NCP. Inversely, an enhanced leaching effect was observed for G under CP. The G formulation resulted in more parent compound (in bamboo shoots) and metabolite (in soil) residues of phoxim than in the case of EC, especially under CP conditions. In addition, the intensity and duration of the formulation effect on soil pH adjustment from G were more obvious than that from EC. Results showed that the environmental behaviors (distribution, degradation, residue) of phoxim in the bamboo forest were significantly influenced by the type of formulation. The prolongation effect from phoxim G might cause persistence and long-term environmental risk. However, bamboo shoot consumption could be considered relatively safe after applying the recommended dose of the two phoxim formulations.

We report an excellent photoresponsive controlled release formulation based on a coumarin copolymer for pesticide 2,4-D.

Evidence of preferential path formation and path memory effect during successive infiltration and drainage cycles in uniform sand columns

The formation of preferential flow paths in the partially saturated zone, and in naturally structured media, is well known. This study examines non-uniform flow in uniform sand columns under different pressure and infiltration/drainage conditions. Experiments were carried out in a vacuum box, with applied suction set to three different heads, and with infiltration fixed at two different flow rates. Tailing observed in some conservative tracer breakthrough curves suggests the formation of immobile resident water pockets which slowly exchange mass with the flowing water fraction. The applied suction controlled the degree of water immobilization whereas flow rate had minimal effect on the dynamic behavior. Trapping and exchange of water occurred repeatedly during successive infiltration and drainage cycles, implying a (hysteretic) memory effect of the previously formed preferential flow paths. Flow and solute transport modeling suggests that these dynamics can be described by a mobile-immobile model that corroborates measurements suggesting preferential flow path formation. These findings have implications for the natural attenuation of contaminants in the partially saturated zone, but also for the persistence of a contamination source exposed to repeated conditions of infiltration and drainage.

Use of rice straw biochar simultaneously as the sustained release carrier of herbicides and soil amendment for their reduced leaching

The sustained release and reduced leaching of herbicides is expected for enhancing their efficacy and minimizing their pollution. For this purpose, the rice straw biochar made at a relatively low temperature (350 °C) (RS350) was used simultaneously as the carrier for incorporating herbicides besides as the soil amendment. In this way, the sustained release of herbicides acetochlor and 2,4-D was obtained in the release experiments, due to the high and reversible sorption by RS350 biochar. Besides, the RS350 biochar significantly reduced the leached amount of herbicides by 25.4%-40.7% for acetochlor, and by 30.2%-45.5% for 2,4-D, depending on the depth (50 or 100 mm) of biochar-amended soil horizon. The high retention of both herbicides in the biochar-amended topsoil makes it possible to extend their efficacy. The results suggest a potential way of using low temperature biochars to reduce the leaching of herbicides without impacting their efficacy.
