Abstract
Sesame is an important oilseed crop grown for human consumption in many countries, with a high commercial value due to its high oleic/linoleic acid ratio (O/L ratio). However, its properties may vary among different accessions. In the current study, 282 sesame accessions were evaluated to determine the effects of agronomic traits and genotypes on the O/L ratio. The O/L ratio was positively correlated with the oleic acid (C18:1), stearic acid (C18:0), and myristic acid (C14:0) concentrations, as well as the capsule zone length (CZL), capsule width (CW), and capsule length (CL), and negatively correlated with the linoleic acid (C18:2) and linolenic acid (C18:3) concentrations, the days to maturity (DTM), days to flowering (DTF), and the height of the first capsule-bearing node (HFC) (p < 0.05). In addition, the O/L ratio was affected by the FAD2 haplotype, as the Hap2 and Hap3 sesame accessions had lower O/L ratios. Therefore, we suggest that the increase and decrease in the contents of C18:1 and C18:2 are associated with the FAD2 haplotype. A total of 25 agronomic traits and fatty acid compositions were compared via statistical analysis, and accessions with a high O/L ratio were selected. The results of this study can be used as a basis for further research on the development of new sesame varieties through enhancing nutritional functionality.

Abstract
Sesame is one of the important oilseed crops in the world. Natural genetic variation exists in the sesame germplasm collection. Mining and utilizing the genetic allele variation from the germplasm collection is an important approach for seed quality improvement. The sesame germplasm accession, PI 263470, which has a significantly higher level of oleic acid (54.0%) than the average (39.5%), was identified by screening the entire USDA germplasm collection. The seeds from this accession were planted in a greenhouse. Leaf tissues and seeds were harvested from individual plants. DNA sequencing of the coding region of the fatty acid desaturase gene (FAD2) confirmed that this accession contained a natural mutation of G425A which may correspond to the deduced amino acid substitution of R142H leading to the high level of oleic acid, but it was a mixed accession with three genotypes (G/G, G/A, and A/A at the position). The genotype with A/A was selected and self-crossed for three generations. The purified seeds were used for EMS-induced mutagenesis to further enhance the level of oleic acid. A total of 635 M2 plants were generated from mutagenesis. Some mutant plants had significant morphological changes including leafy flat stems and others. M3 seeds were used for fatty acid composition analysis by gas chromatography (GC). Several mutant lines were identified with high oleic acid (70%). Six M3 mutant lines plus one control line were advanced to M7 or M8 generations. Their high oleate traits from M7 or M8 seeds harvested from M6 or M7 plants were further confirmed. The level of oleic acid from one mutant line (M7 915-2) was over 75%. The coding region of FAD2 was sequenced from these six mutants, but no mutation was identified. Additional loci may contribute to the high level of oleic acid. The mutants identified in this study can be used as breeding materials for sesame improvement and as genetic materials for forward genetic studies.

Abstract
Globally, abiotic stresses, such as temperature (heat or cold), water (drought and flooding), and salinity, cause significant losses in crop production and have adverse effects on plant growth and development. A variety of DNA-based molecular markers, such as SSRs, RFLPs, AFLPs, SNPs, etc., have been used to screen germplasms for stress tolerance and the QTL mapping of stress-related genes. Such molecular-marker-assisted selection strategies can quicken the development of tolerant/resistant cultivars to withstand abiotic stresses. Oilseeds such as rapeseed, mustard, peanuts, soybeans, sunflower, safflower, sesame, flaxseed, and castor are the most important source of edible oil worldwide. Although oilseed crops are known for their capacity to withstand abiotic challenges, there is a significant difference between actual and potential yields due to the adaptation and tolerance to severe abiotic pressures. This review summarizes the applications of molecular markers to date to achieve abiotic stress tolerance in major oilseed crops. The molecular markers that have been reported for genetic diversity studies and the mapping and tagging of genes/QTLs for drought, heavy metal stress, salinity, flooding, cold and heat stress, and their application in the MAS are presented.

Abstract
Temperature is one of the decisive environmental factors that is projected to increase by 1. 5°C over the next two decades due to climate change that may affect various agronomic characteristics, such as biomass production, phenology and physiology, and yield-contributing traits in oilseed crops. Oilseed crops such as soybean, sunflower, canola, peanut, cottonseed, coconut, palm oil, sesame, safflower, olive etc., are widely grown. Specific importance is the vulnerability of oil synthesis in these crops against the rise in climatic temperature, threatening the stability of yield and quality. The natural defense system in these crops cannot withstand the harmful impacts of heat stress, thus causing a considerable loss in seed and oil yield. Therefore, a proper understanding of underlying mechanisms of genotype-environment interactions that could affect oil synthesis pathways is a prime requirement in developing stable cultivars. Heat stress tolerance is a complex quantitative trait controlled by many genes and is challenging to study and characterize. However, heat tolerance studies to date have pointed to several sophisticated mechanisms to deal with the stress of high temperatures, including hormonal signaling pathways for sensing heat stimuli and acquiring tolerance to heat stress, maintaining membrane integrity, production of heat shock proteins (HSPs), removal of reactive oxygen species (ROS), assembly of antioxidants, accumulation of compatible solutes, modified gene expression to enable changes, intelligent agricultural technologies, and several other agronomic techniques for thriving and surviving. Manipulation of multiple genes responsible for thermo-tolerance and exploring their high expressions greatly impacts their potential application using CRISPR/Cas genome editing and OMICS technology. This review highlights the latest outcomes on the response and tolerance to heat stress at the cellular, organelle, and whole plant levels describing numerous approaches applied to enhance thermos-tolerance in oilseed crops. We are attempting to critically analyze the scattered existing approaches to temperature tolerance used in oilseeds as a whole, work toward extending studies into the field, and provide researchers and related parties with useful information to streamline their breeding programs so that they can seek new avenues and develop guidelines that will greatly enhance ongoing efforts to establish heat stress tolerance in oilseeds.

Abstract
Oilseeds are an important source of dietary lipids, and a comprehensive analysis of oilseed lipids is of great significance to human health, while information about the global lipidomes in oilseeds was limited. Herein, an ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray ionization quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry method for comprehensive lipidomic profiling of oilseeds was established and applied. First, the lipid extraction efficiency and lipid coverage of four different lipid extraction methods were compared. The optimized methyl tert-butyl ether extraction method was superior to isopropanol, Bligh-Dyer, and Folch extraction methods, in terms of the operation simplicity, lipid coverage, and number of identified lipids. Then, global lipidomic analysis of soybean, sesame, peanut, and rapeseed was conducted. A total of 764 lipid molecules, including 260 triacylglycerols, 54 diacylglycerols, 313 glycerophospholipids, 36 saccharolipids, 35 ceramides, 30 free fatty acids, 21 fatty esters, and 15 sphingomyelins were identified and quantified. The compositions and contents of lipids significantly varied among different oilseeds. Our results provided a theoretical basis for the selection and breeding of varieties of oilseed as well as deep processing of oilseed for the edible oil industry.

Abstract
Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) is one of the oldest oilseed crops widely grown in Africa and Asia for its high-quality nutritional seeds. It is well adapted to harsh environments and constitutes an alternative cash crop for smallholders in developing countries. Despite its economic and nutritional importance, sesame is considered as an orphan crop because it has received very little attention from science. As a consequence, it lags behind the other major oil crops as far as genetic improvement is concerned. In recent years, the scenario has considerably changed with the decoding of the sesame nuclear genome leading to the development of various genomic resources including molecular markers, comprehensive genetic maps, high-quality transcriptome assemblies, web-based functional databases and diverse daft genome sequences. The availability of these tools in association with the discovery of candidate genes and quantitative trait locis for key agronomic traits including high oil content and quality, waterlogging and drought tolerance, disease resistance, cytoplasmic male sterility, high yield, pave the way to the development of some new strategies for sesame genetic improvement. As a result, sesame has graduated from an "orphan crop" to a "genomic resource-rich crop." With the limited research teams working on sesame worldwide, more synergic efforts are needed to integrate these resources in sesame breeding for productivity upsurge, ensuring food security and improved livelihood in developing countries. This review retraces the evolution of sesame research by highlighting the recent advances in the "Omics" area and also critically discusses the future prospects for a further genetic improvement and a better expansion of this crop.
