Potent anti-HIV (type 1 and type 2) activity of polyoxometalates: structure-activity relationship and mechanism of action

Can polyoxometalates (POMs) prevent of coronavirus 2019-nCoV cell entry? Interaction of POMs with TMPRSS2 and spike receptor domain complexed with ACE2 (ACE2-RBD): Virtual screening approaches

The unexpected appearance and global spread of COVID-19 create significant difficulties for healthcare systems and present an unusual challenge for the fast discovery of medicines to combat this fatal disease. Screening metallodrugs libraries from the medicinal inorganic chemistry society may expand the studied ‘chemical space’ and improve the probability of discovering effective anti-COVID drugs, including polyoxometalates. POMs are an oxygen-rich family of inorganic cluster systems that have previously been tested for antiviral action against different types of viruses. Human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), human transmembrane protease serine 2 (TMPRSS2), and the SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein are required for host cell-mediated viral entrance. Targeting these proteins demonstrates potential possibilities for preventing infections and transmissions in the initial stage. As a result, POMs with known antiviral effects were investigated for this purpose using molecular docking and dynamic simulations. This research shows that POMs can prevent SARS CoV-2 from entering cells by blocking TMPRSS2, which SARS-CoV-2 uses for spike glycoprotein priming. They may also engage with ACE2 and the spike glycoprotein and disrupt their binding by blocking the active sites. We think that a thorough investigation of POMs as possible anti-COVID-19 drugs will provide significant opportunities.

Increased in vitro Anti-HIV Activity of Caffeinium-Functionalized Polyoxometalates

Polyoxometalates (POMs), molecular metal oxide anions, are inorganic clusters with promising antiviral activity. Herein we report increased anti-HIV-1 activity of a POM when electrostatically combined with organic counter-cations. To this end, Keggin-type cerium tungstate POMs have been combined with organic methyl-caffeinium (Caf) cations, and their cytotoxicity, antiviral activity and mode of action have been studied. The novel compound, Caf4 K[β2 -CeSiW11 O39 ]×H2 O, exhibits sub-nanomolar antiviral activity and inhibits HIV-1 infectivity by acting on an early step of the viral infection cycle. This work demonstrates that combination of POM anions and organic bioactive cations can be a powerful new strategy to increase antiviral activity of these inorganic compounds.

Anti-flavivirus activity of polyoxometalate

Viruses in the Flaviviridae family such as Zika virus (ZIKV), dengue virus (DENV), and Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) are major public health concerns. The development of antiviral agents against these viruses is urgently needed. We have previously discovered that the Keggin structured polyoxometalate POM-12 has potent inhibitory activity against hepatitis C virus, another member of the Flaviviridae family. In this study, we tested its antiviral activity of DENV, JEV and ZIKV, and found that POM-12 dramatically inhibited their infection with IC50 value of 1.16 μM, 1.9 μM and 0.64 μM, respectively. Mechanistic studies indicated that POM-12 directly disrupted the integrity of these virions. Moreover, POM-12 also targeted the post-entry steps of viral replication of JEV, but having no similar activities on ZIKV and DENV. The differential actions of POM-12 on these viruses suggest that surface topology and charge of virion may have influence on its drug effect, and thus POM-12 may be modified to more efficiently inhibit these and other similar viruses.

Polyoxometalates in Biomedicine: Update and Overview

BACKGROUND

Polyoxometalates (POMs) are negatively charged metal-oxo clusters of early transition metal ions in high oxidation states (e.g., WVI, MoVI, VV). POMs are of interest in the fields of catalysis, electronics, magnetic materials and nanotechnology. Moreover, POMs were shown to exhibit biological activities in vitro and in vivo, such as antitumor, antimicrobial, and antidiabetic.

METHODS

The literature search for this peer-reviewed article was performed using PubMed and Scopus databases with the help of appropriate keywords.

RESULTS

This review gives a comprehensive overview of recent studies regarding biological activities of polyoxometalates, and their biomedical applications as promising anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-tumor, and anti-diabetic agents. Additionally, their putative mechanisms of action and molecular targets are particularly considered.

CONCLUSION

Although a wide range of biological activities of Polyoxometalates (POMs) has been reported, they are to the best of our knowledge not close to a clinical trial or a final application in the treatment of diabetes or infectious and malignant diseases. Accordingly, further studies should be directed towards determining the mechanism of POM biological actions, which would enable fine-tuning at the molecular level, and consequently efficient action towards biological targets and as low toxicity as possible. Furthermore, biomedical studies should be performed on solutionstable POMs employing physiological conditions and concentrations.

Tryptophan Trimers and Tetramers Inhibit Dengue and Zika Virus Replication by Interfering with Viral Attachment Processes

Here, we report a class of tryptophan trimers and tetramers that inhibit (at low micromolar range) dengue and Zika virus infection in vitro These compounds (AL family) have three or four peripheral tryptophan moieties directly linked to a central scaffold through their amino groups; thus, their carboxylic acid groups are free and exposed to the periphery. Structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies demonstrated that the presence of extra phenyl rings with substituents other than COOH at the N1 or C2 position of the indole side chain is a requisite for the antiviral activity against both viruses. The molecules showed potent antiviral activity, with low cytotoxicity, when evaluated on different cell lines. Moreover, they were active against laboratory and clinical strains of all four serotypes of dengue virus as well as a selected group of Zika virus strains. Additional mechanistic studies performed with the two most potent compounds (AL439 and AL440) demonstrated an interaction with the viral envelope glycoprotein (domain III) of dengue 2 virus, preventing virus attachment to the host cell membrane. Since no antiviral agent is approved at the moment against these two flaviviruses, further pharmacokinetic studies with these molecules are needed for their development as future therapeutic/prophylactic drugs.

Inhibition of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Entry by a Keggin Polyoxometalate

Here, we report the anti-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) potency and underlying mechanisms of a Keggin polyoxometalate (PT-1, K₆HPTi₂W₁₀O₄₀). Our findings showed that PT-1 exhibited highly potent effects against a diverse group of HIV type 1 (HIV-1) strains and displayed low cytotoxicity and genotoxicity. The time-addition assay revealed that PT-1 acted at an early stage of infection, and these findings were supported by the observation that PT-1 had more potency against Env-pseudotyped virus than vesicular stomatitis virus glycoprotein (VSVG) pseudotyped virus. Surface plasmon resonance binding assays and flow cytometry analysis showed that PT-1 blocked the gp120 binding site in the CD4 receptor. Moreover, PT-1 bound directly to gp41 NHR (N36 peptide), thereby interrupting the core bundle formation of gp41. In conclusion, our data suggested that PT-1 may be developed as a new anti-HIV-1 agent through its effects on entry inhibition.

The antibacterial activity of polyoxometalates: structures, antibiotic effects and future perspectives

Polyoxometalates (POMs) are, mostly anionic, metal oxide compounds that span a wide range of tunable physical and chemical features rendering them very interesting for biological purposes, an continuously emerging but little explored field. Due to their biological and biochemical effects, including antitumor, -viral and -bacterial properties, POMs and POM-based systems are considered as promising future metallodrugs. In this article, we focus on the antibacterial activity of POMs and their therapeutic potential in the battle against bacteria and their increasing resistance against pharmaceuticals. Recent advances in the synthesis of POMs are highlighted, with emphasis on the development and properties of biologically active POM-based hybrid and nanocomposite structures. By analysing the antibacterial activity and structure of POMs, putative mode of actions are provided, including potential targets for POM-protein interactions, and a structure-activity-relationship was established for a series of POMs against two bacteria, namely Helicobacter pylori and Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Pharmacokinetics of anti-HBV polyoxometalate in rats

Polyoxometalates are non-nucleoside analogs that have been proven to exhibit broad-spectrum antiviral activity. In particular, Cs₂K₄Na[SiW₉Nb₃O₄₀].H₂O 1 shows low toxicity and high activity against HBV. The preclinical pharmacokinetics of Compound 1 in rats were characterized by establishing and applying inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry method to determine the concentration of W in plasma, urine, feces, bile and organ samples. The quantitative ICP-MS method demonstrated good sensitivity and application in the pharmacokinetics study of polyoxometalates. The pharmacokinetic behavior of Compound 1 after intravenous or oral administration fit a two-compartment model. T_max ranges from 0.1 h to 3 h and the T_1/2 of Compound 1 is between 20 h and 30 h. The absolute bioavailability of Compound 1 at 45, 180 and 720 mg/kg groups were 23.68%, 14.67% and 11.93%, respectively. The rates of plasma protein binding of Compound 1 at 9, 18 and 36 mg/ml of Compound 1 are 62.13±9.41%, 71.20±24.98% and 49.00±25.59%, respectively. Compound 1 was widely distributed throughout the body, and high levels of compound 1 were found in the kidney and liver. The level of Compound 1 in excretion was lower: 30% for urine, 0.28% for feces and 0.42% for bile, respectively. For elaborate pharmacokinetic characteristics to be fully understood, the metabolism of Compound 1 needs to be studied further.

Inhibition of hepatitis C virus infection by polyoxometalates

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infects about 2% of the world population. The standard treatment of chronic HCV infection is still discontented because of the low sustained virological response rate. The development of new HCV antivirals is a healthcare imperative. We explored the potentials of polyoxometalates to inhibit HCV infection using newly developed HCVcc cell culture system. We found one polyoxometalate compound (named POM-12) can inhibit HCV infection at the nanomolar range while displayed little cytotoxicity. We showed that POM-12 inhibited pseudotyped HCV infection but had no effect on HCV RNA replication. Furthermore, we showed that POM-12 was virucidal and can disrupt HCV particles. Finally we demonstrated that POM-12 had no effect on the vesicular stomatitis virus infection while had weak inhibitory activity against the influenza virus infection. In conclusion, we identified a potent anti-HCV compound which may provide an attractive drug candidate to cure HCV infection.

Polyoxometalates active against tumors, viruses, and bacteria

Polyoxometalates (PMs) as discrete metal-oxide cluster anions with high solubility in water and photochemically and electrochemically active property have a wide variety of structures not only in molecular size from sub-nano to sub-micrometers with a various combination of metals but also in symmetry and highly negative charge. One of the reasons for such a structural variety originates from their conformation change (due to the condensed aggregation and the structural assembly) which strongly depends on environmental parameters such as solution pH, concentration, and coexistent foreign inorganic and/or organic substances. In the course of the application of the physicochemical properties of such PMs to the medical fields, antitumoral, antiviral, and antibacterial activities have been developed for realization of a novel inorganic medicine which provides a biologically excellent activity never replaced by other approved medicines. Several PMs as a candidate for clinical uses have been licensed toward the chemotherapy of solid tumors (such as human gastric cancer and pancreatic cancer), DNA and RNA viruses (such as HSV, HIV, influenza, and SARS), and drug-resistant bacteria (such as MRSA and VRSA) in recent years: [NH3Pr(i)]6[Mo7O24]∙3H2O (PM-8) and [Me3NH]6[H2Mo(V) 12O28(OH)12(Mo(VI)O3)4]∙2H2O (PM-17) for solid tumors; K7[PTi2W10O40]∙6H2O (PM-19), [Pr(i)NH3]6H[PTi2W10O38(O2)2]∙H2O (PM-523), and K11H[(VO)3(SbW9O33)2]∙27H2O (PM-1002) for viruses; and K6[P2W18O62]∙14H2O (PM-27), K4[SiMo12O40]∙3H2O (SiMo12), and PM-19 for MRSA and VRSA. The results are discussed from a point of view of the chemotherapeutic clarification in this review.

In vitro anti-hepatitis B and SARS virus activities of a titanium-substituted-heteropolytungstate

A structural determined heteropolytungstate, [K₄(H₂O)₈Cl][K₄(H₂O)₄PTi₂W₁₀O₄₀]·NH₂OH 1, has been synthesized and evaluated for in vitro antiviral activities against hepatitis B (HBV) and SARS virus. The identity and high purity of compound 1 were confirmed by elemental analysis, NMR, IR analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The compound 1, evaluated in HepG 2.2.15 cells expressing permanently HBV, significantly reduced the levels of HBV antigens and HBV DNA in a dose-dependent and time-dependent manner. EC₅₀ values were determined to be 54 μM for HBeAg, 61 μM for HBsAg and 2.66 μM for supernatant HBV DNA, as compared to 1671, 1570, 169 μM, respectively, for the commercially-available hepatitis B drug adefovir dipivoxil (ADV). Intracellular cccDNA, pgRNA and HBcAg were also found to be decreased by compound 1 in a concentration-dependent manner. Cytotoxicity results showed that compound 1 has low toxicity in HepG 2 cells with CC₅₀ value of 515.20 μM. The results indicate that compound 1 can efficiently inhibit HBV replication in HepG 2.2.15 cells line in vitro. Additionally, compound 1 also shows high anti-SARS activity at an EC₅₀ of 7.08 μM and toxicity with a CC₅₀ of 118.6 μM against MDCK cells.

Molecular simulation study of the binding mechanism of [α-PTi2W10O40]7- for its promising broad-spectrum inhibitory activity to FluV-A neuraminidase

Polyoxometalate (POM) has promising antiviral activities. It shows broad-spectrum inhibiting ability, high efficiency, and low toxicity. Experimental assays show that titanium containing polyoxotungstates have anti-influenza-virus activity. In this paper, the binding mechanisms of five isomers of di-Ti-substituted polyoxotungstate, [α-1,2-PTi₂W₁₀O₄₀]^7- (α-1,2), [α-1,6-PTi₂W₁₀O₄₀]^7- (α-1,6), [α-1,5-PTi₂W₁₀O₄₀]^7- (α-1,5), [α-1,4-PTi₂W₁₀O₄₀]^7- (α-1,4) and [α-1,11-PTi₂W₁₀O₄₀]^7- (α-1,11), to five subtypes of influenza virus A neuraminidase (FluV-A NA) were investigated in the context of aqueous solution by using molecular docking and molecular dynamics studies. The results show that the isomer α-1,2 is superior to other isomers as a potential inhibitor to neuraminidase. The positively charged arginine residues around the active site of NA could be induced by negatively charged POM to adapt themselves and could form salt bridge interactions and hydrogen bond interactions with POM. The binding free energies of POM/NA complexes range from -5.36 to -8.31 kcal mol^-1. The electrostatic interactions are found to be the driving force during the binding process of POM to NA. The conformational analysis shows that POM tends to bind primarily with N1 and N8 at the edge of the active pocket, which causes the conformational change of the pincers structure comprising residue 347 and loop 150. Whereas, the active pockets of N2, N9 and N4 are found to be more spacious, which allows POM to enter into the active pockets directly and anchor there firmly. This study shows that negatively charged ligand as POM could induce the reorganization of the active site of NA and highlights POM as a promising inhibitor to NA despite the ever increasing mutants of NA.

2D and 3D Polymeric Wells-Dawson polyoxometelates: synthesis, crystal structures, and cyclic voltammetry of [(M(H(2)O)(4))(x)][H(6-2x)P(2)W(18-n)Mo(n)O(62)] (M = Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II))

The synthesis, X-ray crystal structures, cyclic voltammetry, and IR and (31)P NMR characterizations of five new Wells-Dawson-type polyoxometalates are reported, the formulas of which being [(Cu(H(2)O)(4))(2.5)][HP(2)W(18)O(62)].11.33H(2)O (4), [(Cu(H(2)O)(4))(2.4)][H(1.2)P(2)W(12)Mo(6)O(62)].11.4H(2)O (5), [(Cu(H(2)O)(4))(2.3)][H(1.4)P(2)W(15)Mo(3)O(62)].10.1H(2)O (6), [Co(H(2)O)(4))(2.3)][H(1.4)P(2)W(14)Mo(4)O(62)].18.8H(2)O (7), and [Ni(H(2)O)(4))(1.85)][H(2.3)P(2)W(15)Mo(3)O(62)].20.6H(2)O (8). These compounds are obtained as crystalline materials from the corresponding acids by substitution of a transition metal in aqueous solution. Compounds 4, 5, and 6 are isostructural; their crystal structure consists of 2D polymeric hexagonal layers where each Wells-Dawson anion is connected to six neighbors by [CuO(6)] octahedra. On the other hand, compounds 7 and 8, which are also isostructural, present a 3D structure where the Mo-substituted [P(2)W(14)Mo(4)O(62)] units are connected by [MO(6)] octahedra (M = Co(II), Ni(II)). Different types of substitution modes of Mo ions are observed within polyanions. Cyclic voltammetry shows that Cu(II) derivatives have similar behavior but different from that of the starting compounds. No electrochemical activity has been detected for the Ni-containing compound 8.

Sectroscopic study of stability and molecular species of 12-tungstophosphoric acid in aqueous solution

The various molecular species of 12-tungstophosporic acid (WPA) in aqueous solutions of different pH values (from 1 to 11.5) were investigated by UV, IR, and NMR spectroscopy. The dependence of the attained equilibrium composition in solution on time, concentration of WPA, and type of buffer used was studied. Obtained results indicate that the buffer type and pH value greatly determine the equilibrium composition in the solution. The Keggin structure of the WPA is sustained only up to pH 1.5. With further increase in pH, the decomposition of Keggin anion does not lead directly to the monovacant lacunary anion. Between 1.5 and 2.0, the structures with 2 phosphorus atoms from the Dawson series are dominant as intermediate species. In the pH range 3.5–7.5, WPA is present in the form of the monovacant lacunary Keggin anion. These results are of special importance for the biomedical and catalytic applications of heteropoly compounds (HPCs) and for an improved understanding of the mechanism of their functioning.Key words: heteropolyacids of the Keggin structure, hydrostability, UV, IR and NMR spectroscopy.

A study of 12-tungstosilicic and 12-molybdophosphoric acids in solution

The behaviour of two heteropolyacids (HPAs) with quite different stability in aqueous solutions was systematically investigated by UV, IR and NMR spectroscopy and potentiometric titration. It was shown that the Keggin structure of 12-tungstosilicic acid (H4SiW12O40, WSiA) anion was sustained over a wide range of pH from 1.0 to 7.0, while the same anion type of 12-molybdophosphoric acid (H3PMo12O40, MoPA) was present only at pH 1.0. This means that under physiological conditions WSiA is dominantly present in the form of a Kegginanion, whereas the structure of MoPA is completely decomposed to molybdate and phosphate. The obtained results are of special importance for bio-medical and catalytic applications of these compounds and for a better understanding of the mechanism of their action.

Studies on the interactions of Ti-containing polyoxometalates (POMs) with SARS-CoV 3CLpro by molecular modeling

Ti-containing alpha-Keggin polyoxometalates (POMs) have been proved with properties of both anti-tumor and anti-HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). The potential anti-SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) activity of the POMs [alpha-PTi(2)W(10)O(40)](7-) isomers was investigated in this paper by molecular modeling method. The SARS 3c like protease, namely the SARS 3CL(pro) is the key function protease for virus replication as well as transcription and thus can be taken as one of the key targets for anti-SARS drug design. Affinity/Insight II was used to explore possible binding locations for POMs/3CL(pro) interaction. Charges in the POMs were obtained from density-functional theory (DFT) method. The results show that POMs bind with 3CL(pro) in the active site region with high affinity; POMs are more prone to bind with 3CL(pro) than with some organic compounds; for the POMs/3CL(pro)complex, the OTi(2) in POMs is the vital element for electrostatic interaction, and the electrostatic binding energy is strong enough to keep the complex stable.

Anti-RNA virus activity of polyoxometalates

The anti-RNA virus activity of polyoxometalates (POM) is reviewed, with a special emphasis on the anti-respiratory virus activities. There are many causative agents of acute viral respiratory infections; and it is rather difficult to identify the relevant agent in a given case by rapid clinical means. During acute progress of infection before the definitive diagnosis is obtained physicians need to prescribe certain broad spectrum anti-viral drugs. A titanium containing polyoxotungstate, PM-523 exhibited potent anti-influenza virus (FluV) A and anti-respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) activities in vitro. Therapeutic effect of FluV A infected mice with aerosol inhalation of PM-523 was proven. A vanadium substituted polyoxotungstate, PM-1001 has antiviral activity against FluV A, RSV, parainfluenza virus (PfluV) type 2, Dengue fiver virus, HIV-1 and SARS coronavirus in vitro. Thus, POMs have been proven to be broad spectrum and non-toxic anti-RNA virus agents in both in vitro and in vivo experiments and are promising candidates for first-line therapeutics in acute respiratory diseases.

Preparation, Structure, and Electrochemistry of a Polypyrrole Film Doped with Manganese(III)-Substituted Dawson-Type Phosphopolyoxotungstate

The fabrication, structure, electrochemical properties, and electrocatalytic properties of a manganese(III)-substituted Dawson-type phosphopolyoxotungstate, alpha 2-K7P2W17O61(Mn3+.OH2).12H2O (P2W17Mn), entrapped in polypyrrole (PPy) film have been studied. The hybrid film was prepared by potentiostatic polymerization from aqueous solution containing 20 mM pyrrole (Py) and 2 mM P2W17Mn on a pyrolytic graphite (PG) surface. Chronoamperometry, Raman spectroscopy, UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry were used to monitor and characterize the growth, structure, and properties of the film. The chronoamperometric curve shows that P2W17Mn can catalyze the electrochemical polymerization of Py. The Raman spectrum suggests that the doped P2W17Mn has little effect on the structure of PPy film. The P2W17Mn/PPy film exhibits good voltammetric response in both the acidic aqueous and acetonitrile solutions. At pH 1.0, the molar ratio of pyrrole to P2W17Mn7- in the hybrid film is 21.1:1, quite close to the expected ratio of 21.2:1 for a PPy film with a +0.33 oxidation level per pyrrole moiety and doped with an anion with a charge of 7. The influence of solution pH on P2W17Mn7- in the film is much smaller than that in the aqueous solution. During the potential scanning in 0.1 M LiClO4 acetonitrile solution, P2W17Mn7- was slowly released from the hybrid film and electrolyte ions (Li+ and ClO4-) were inserted into the film. This was identified by cyclic voltammetry and UV-visible spectroscopy. Additionally, the hybrid film can effectively catalyze the reduction of hydrogen peroxide and nitrite.

Considerations and development of topical microbicides to inhibit the sexual transmission of HIV

The increased incidence of HIV/AIDS disease in women aged 15 - 49 years has identified the urgent need for a female-controlled, efficacious and safe vaginal topical microbicide. To meet this challenge, new topical microbicide candidates consisting of molecules or formulations that modify the genital environment (BufferGel, engineered Lactobacillus, over-the-counter lubricants), surfactants (C31D/Savvy, sodium dodecyl sulfate, sodium lauryl sulfate), polyanionic polymers (PRO 2000, beta-cyclodextrin, Carraguard, CAP, D2S, SPL-7013), proteins (cyanovirin-N, monoclonal antibodies, thromspondin-1 peptides, Pokeweed antiviral protein and others), reverse transcription inhibitors (PMPA [Tenofovir ]), UC-781, SJ-3366, DABO and thiourea) and other molecules (NCp7-specific virucides, chemokine receptor agonists/antagonists, WHI-05 and WHI-07) are currently being investigated for activity, safety and efficacy. This review will assess the development of these molecules in the context of cervicovaginal defences and the clinical failure of nonoxynol-9.

Solution structural studies of molybdate-nucleotide polyanions

The complexation of molybdate with the nucleotides adenosine-5'-monophosphate (5'-AMP), adenosine-3'-monophosphate (3'-AMP) and guanosine-5'-monophosphate (5'-GMP) has been investigated by (1)H and (31)P NMR and Mo K-edge X-ray absorption near edge (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. Acidification of aqueous solutions containing molybdate and each of the nucleotides resulted in the formation of a single species characterized by (1)H resonances which are deshielded relative to those of free nucleotide. Analysis of the two-component systems indicated a Mo/nucleotide ratio of 2.5:1 for the complexation species. White compounds, characterized as Na(2)[Mo(5)O(15)(HB)(2)] (B=5'-AMP, 5'-GMP), have been isolated from the acidified molybdate/H(2)B solutions. Dissolution in D(2)O replicates the NMR spectra of the solution species observed prior to precipitation. Solution and solid state Mo K-edge XAS and EXAFS spectroscopy of Na(2)[Mo(5)O(15)(HAMP)(2)] and Na(6)[Mo(5)O(15)(PO(4))(2)] provide convincing evidence for the presence of a pentamolybdodiphosphate core in the molybdate-nucleotide complexes in both the solid and solution states.
