Abstract
The tetramers of azapentacene derivatives with unique hash mark (#)-shaped structures were prepared in a quite facile manner. The #-shaped tetramers are optically active due to possessing extended biaryl skeletons, and the structure of the tetramer composed of four dihydrodiazapentacene (DHDAP) units (1) was investigated as the first example of this kind of molecule. The tetramer 1 showed characteristic chiroptical properties reflecting its orthogonally arranged quadruple DHDAP moieties, as well as redox activity. The solution of enantiopure 1 exhibited intense circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) with a dissymmetry factor of 2.5 × 10-3. The absolute configuration of the enantiomers of 1 was experimentally determined by X-ray crystal analysis for the dication salt of the enantiomer of 1 with SbCl6- counterions. The solutions of enantiopure 12+·2[SbCl6-] also showed NIR circular dichroism (CD) spectra over the entire range from visible to 1100 nm, enabling the modulation of the chiroptical properties by redox stimuli.

Abstract
We have investigated the chiroptical, linear, and second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of seven binaphthol derivatives and elucidated structure-property relationships from the micromechanism for the first time. The excitation energies, oscillator strengths, and rotational strengths of the 150 lowest energy electron excitations for the most stable conformers have been calculated at TDB3LYP/cc-pVDZ level of theory. The experimental UV-vis absorption energies were reproduced well by our calculations. The simulated circular dichroism (CD) spectra and calculated optical rotation (OR) values are in reasonable agreement with experimental ones. These results demonstrate that TDDFT calculations can not only describe the electron transition property but also can be used to assign the absolute configurations (ACs) of binaphthol derivatives with high confidence. Whereas OR values are more sensitive to the molecular structures than CD spectra. The electron transition property and chiroptical origin have been assigned and analyzed. These derivatives possess remarkably large molecular first hyperpolarizabilities, especially compound 7 which has a value of 241.65 × 10(-30) esu. This value is about 60 times as large as that of highly π-delocalized phenyliminomethyl ferrocene complex. Moreover, compound 6 exhibits pronounced different second-order NLO response values from neutral state to the two cationic states (6(2+) and 6(4+)), which indicates that this compound could act as a potential NLO switch material. The cooperativity of intramolecular charge transfer of the studied compounds was also discussed.

Abstract
This critical review surveys the development of the structural and electrochemical knowledge of the TCAQ moiety since its discovery, nearly two decades ago, until the present. Additionally, recent advances in the chemistry and functionalization of this versatile building block are highlighted, with special emphasis on the strategies devoted to the preparation of donor-acceptor molecular and polymeric materials. The applications of TCAQ-based materials in materials science as electrical conductors, molecular rectifiers, in photoinduced electron transfer processes, optoelectronic devices and as electrochiroptical materials are also reviewed (89 references).

Abstract
This critical review covers the timely topic of carbon nanostructures-fullerenes and carbon nanotubes-in combination with metalloporphyrins as integrative components for electron-donor-acceptor ensembles. These ensembles are typically probed in condensed media and at semi-transparent electrode surfaces. In particular, we will present a comprehensive survey of a variety of covalent (i.e., nanoconjugates) and non-covalent linkages (i.e., nanohybrids) to demonstrate how to govern/fine-tune the electronic interactions in the resulting electron-donor-acceptor ensembles. In the context of covalent bridges, different spacers will be discussed, which range from pure "insulators" (i.e., amide bonds, etc.) to sophisticated "molecular wires" (i.e., p-phenylenevinylene units, etc.). Furthermore, we will elucidate the fundamental impact that these vastly different spacers may exert on the rate, efficiency, and mechanism of short- and long-range electron transfer reactions. Additionally, a series of non-covalent motifs will be described: hydrogen bonding, complementary electrostatics, pi-pi stacking and metal coordination-to name a few. These motifs have been successfully employed by us and our collaborators en route towards novel architectures (i.e., linear structures, tubular structures, rotaxanes, catenanes, etc.) that exhibit unique and remarkable charge transfer features.

Abstract
We report the hydrothermal synthesis and characterization of a layered cobalt phenylphosphonate. Unlike most metal phosphonates reported to date, the structure was solved by single crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD). Co(ii) centres are hexa-coordinated by oxygen and the octahedra corner-share into a layer. The layers are capped by phenylphosphonate groups, where the phenyl groups define a hydrophobic bilayer region. The material was also characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and SQUID (superconducting quantum interference device) magnetometry. The material undergoes an antiferromagnetic transition at a relatively low Néel temperature of 4.0 K, while the Curie-Weiss temperature of -76.5 K reflects the low-dimensionality of the magnetic structure. The effective magnetic moment of 5.01 micro(B) per Co(2+) verifies a high-spin configuration and an octahedral coordination of the metal centres. This layered material was correctly predicted in the literature from powder data, adds to the structural diversity of the cobalt phosphonates, and may be useful as an intercalation or exfoliation compound.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] A series of butterfly-shaped tetracyanoanthraquinodimethanes (TCNAQs) with a chiral amide auxiliary 1a-f were prepared from the corresponding anthraquinones. They are stronger acceptors than the unsubstituted derivative and undergo one-wave two-electron reduction. They form weak electron-donor-acceptor (EDA) complexes with the title pinacol 2. Upon charge-transfer excitation of these complexes, dihydro-TCNAQs 3 and 1,8-dianisoylnaphthalene 4 were efficiently formed, the latter of which is the product of a retropinacol reaction via 2+*. Partial enantiodifferentiation of rac-2 was realized during the photoreactions with 2-[(R)-1-phenylethylcarbamoyl]-TCNAQ 1ain CD3CN. Thus, optically active (S,S)-(+)-pinacol 2 (12.3% ee at 54% conversion; 21.5% ee at 70% conversion) was recovered from the photolyzates. This reaction represents a new and rare example of the pseudokinetic resolution of tert-alcohol accompanied by C-C bond fission. Significant differences in the association constants for the diastereomeric EDA complexes are responsible for the observed enantiodifferentiation.

Abstract
New chiral, soluble binaphthyl derivatives that incorporate stilbenoid dendrons at the 6,6'-positions have been prepared. The synthesis of the new enantiopure dendrimers was performed in a convergent manner by Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons (HWE) reaction of the appropriately functionalized 1,1'-binaphthyl derivative (R)-1 and the appropriate dendrons (R)(2n)G(n)-CHO. Different electroactive units were incorporated in the peripheral positions of the dendrons in order to tune both the optical and electrochemical behavior of these systems. Fluorescence measurements on the chiral dendrimers reveal a strong emission with maxima between 409 and 508 nm depending upon the substitution pattern. Finally, the redox properties of the dendrimers were determined by cyclic voltammetry, showing the influence of the functional groups at the peripheral positions of the dendrimer on the redox behavior of these systems.

Abstract
The first enantiomerically pure and soluble C(60) dimers have been synthesized from suitably functionalized 1,1'-binaphthyl derivatives by 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of the respective in situ generated diazo compounds to C(60). These systems exhibit optical and electrochemical activity.
