Abstract
N-acyliminium-type cations are examples of highly reactive intermediates that are willingly used in organic synthesis in intra- or intermolecular α-amidoalkylation reactions. They are usually generated in situ from their corresponding precursors in the presence of acidic catalysts (Brønsted or Lewis acids). In this context, 1-aminoalkyltriarylphosphonium derivatives deserve particular attention. The positively charged phosphonium moiety located in the immediate vicinity of the N-acyl group significantly facilitates Cα-P+ bond breaking, even without the use of catalyst. Moreover, minor structural modifications of 1-aminoalkyltriarylphosphonium derivatives make it possible to modulate their reactivity in a simple way. Therefore, these types of compounds can be considered as smart synthetic equivalents of N-acyliminium-type cations. This review intends to familiarize a wide audience with the unique properties of 1-aminoalkyltriarylphosphonium derivatives and encourage their wider use in organic synthesis. Hence, the most important methods for the preparation of 1-aminoalkyltriarylphosphonium salts, as well as the area of their potential synthetic utilization, are demonstrated. In particular, the structure-reactivity correlations for the phosphonium salts are discussed. It was shown that 1-aminoalkyltriarylphosphonium salts are not only an interesting alternative to other α-amidoalkylating agents but also can be used in such important transformations as the Wittig reaction or heterocyclizations. Finally, the prospects and limitations of their further applications in synthesis and medicinal chemistry were considered.

Abstract
An exquisite metal-free cascade cyclization reaction of 2-acylbenzoic acids with amines was developed, which provided a powerful method for the one-pot synthesis of diverse isoindoloisoquinoline and benzoindolizinoindole derivatives. This protocol avoided the use of metal catalysts, proceeded with high efficiency and had broad substrate scope. These resulting products could be transformed into tertiary amines under the reduction of LiAlH4/AlCl3, followed by the Hofmann elimination offering lots of nitrogen-containing nine-membered ring compounds in excellent yields. All synthesized products containing fused N-polycyclic skeletons were difficult to be constructed using traditional methods and they have a wide range of applications in the pharmaceutical area.

Abstract
A strategy for the syntheses of pyrrolo [2,1-a] isoquinolines and indolizinoindolones via a Brønsted acid and Lewis acid co-promoted cascade reaction has been developed. The strategy was exemplified in the total synthesis of Erysotramidine.

Abstract
An efficient Ni(ClO4)2·6H2O-promoted amidoalkylation reaction for the synthesis of 3-substituted isoindolinones involving various γ-hydroxy lactams and nucleophiles has been successfully developed. The transformation proceeds with both carbon (ketones and arenes) and heteroatom (alcohols, thiols, and amines) nucleophiles and in both intermolecular and intramolecular manners. The prominent features of the present strategy are wide substrate scope, excellent group tolerability, and moderate to good yields (up to 96% yield). The present strategy is also characterized by remarkable superiority over the current synthetic methods. Furthermore, the reaction could be scaled up to the multigram scale.

Abstract
A rapid and efficient synthesis of a series of (±)-nuevamine, (±)-lennoxamine and magallanesine aza analogues is described. The synthetic strategy involves Ugi-3CR and two further condensation processes, aza-Diels-Alder cycloaddition and the Pomeranz-Fritsch reaction. The variation of the chain-size in aldehyde moieties provided structural diversity in only two operational reaction steps.

Abstract
An organolithium addition-intramolecular α-amidoalkylation sequence on N-phenethylimides has been developed for the synthesis of fused tetrahydroisoquinoline systems using 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol (binol)-derived Brønsted acids. This transformation is the first in which activated benzene derivatives are used as internal nucleophiles, instead of electron-rich heteroaromatics, generating a quaternary stereocenter. Phenolic substitution on the aromatic ring of the phenethylamino moiety and the use of binol-derived N-triflylphosphoramides as catalysts are determinants to achieve reasonable levels of enantioselection, that is, up to 75% enantiomeric excess, in the α-amidoalkylation step. The procedure is complementary to the intermolecular α-amidoalkylation process, as opposite enantiomers are formed, and to the Pictet-Spengler cyclization, which allows the formation of tertiary stereocenters.

Abstract
Treatment of oxazolidinediones with TiCl4 in CH2Cl2 resulted in conversion to isoindoloisoquinolinones via intramolecular Friedel–Crafts reaction with extrusion of CO2 in the transformation. The alkaloid nuevamine has been synthesized under these conditions in a regiospecific manner.

Abstract
The present chapter describes isolation, biogenetic proposals, and syntheses of the natural products 1-4 and 10-11 with a pyrrolo[2,1-a]-isoquinoline framework. Moreover, the syntheses of some structural analogs are discussed. The pyrrolo[2,1-a]isoquinolines are of interest due to their promising biological activities. For crispine A (1), many total syntheses have been reported and for trolline (3), only three. Only one total synthesis has been reported for each of the following natural products: peyoglutam (10), mescalotam (11), and the antitumor active crispine B (2). Some of the pyrrolo[2,1-a]isoquinoline alkaloids have not been synthesized yet. The following three tables summarize the synthetic efforts toward crispine A (1) (Table 1: racemic syntheses; Table 2: enantioselective syntheses) and trolline (3) (Table 3).

Abstract
This paper describes the development of a highly stereoselective N-acyliminium cyclization protocol for the construction of a range of non-racemic heterocyclic templates. Due to the nature of this review, we have focused primarily on developments made within our own research group, but have included relevant and noteworthy contributions in the same area from others, most notably the research groups of Amat, Bosch and Lete. As a result, we apologize in advance for the omission of much excellent work carried out by many other talented researchers in this field.

Abstract
Rapid progress in the synthetic application of benzotriazole derivatives in the last 20 years has resulted in over 1000 scientific papers on the subject. This fact is reflected in Section 5.01.7, which involves almost a half of the volume of this chapter. The section is arranged according to hybridization of the C-α atom and atomic numbers of the atoms in positions β and γ to allow an easy access to the material of interest. Recent discovery of copper catalysis in [3+2] cycloadditions of azides to acetylenes, the so-called ‘click chemistry’, which boosted application of the 1,2,3-triazole derivatives, especially in medicinal chemistry, is presented in Section 5.01.9. From the point of view of practical applications, Section 5.01.11 is organized according to the number, position, and combination of the substituents at the aromatic rings. Another novel feature that has no precedence in the previous editions of Comprehensive Heterocyclic Chemistry is an addition of triazole and benzotriazole complexes with various transitions metals to Section 5.01.4.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] A new strategy for the synthesis of 3-demethoxyerythratidinone has been developed and is based on an extraordinarily facile intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction of a 2-imido-substituted furan. During the course of the synthesis, several novel acid-induced rearrangement reactions were encountered.
