Resolution of P-Sterogenic 1-Phenylphosphin-2-en-4-one 1-Oxide into Two Enantiomers by ( R, R)-TADDOL and Conformational Diversity of the Phosphinenone Ring and TADDOL in the Crystal State. Abstract
The resolution of racemic 1-phenylphosphin-2-en-4-one 1-oxide (2), was achieved through the fractional crystallization of its diastereomeric complexes with (4R,5R)-(−)-2,2-dimethyl -α,α,α′,α′-tetraphenyl-dioxolan-4,5-dimethanol (R,R-TADDOL) followed by the liberation of the individual enantiomers of 2 by flash chromatography on silica gel columns. The resolution process furnished the two enantiomers of 2 of 99.1 and 99.9% e.e. at isolated yields of 62 and 59% (counted for the single enantiomer), respectively. The absolute configurations of the two enantiomers were established by means of X-ray crystallography of their diastereomerically pure complexes, i.e., (R)-2•R,R)-TADDOL and (S)-2•(R,R)-TADDOL. The structural analysis revealed that in the (R)-2•(R,R)-TADDOL complex, the P-phenyl substituent occupied a pseudoequatorial position, whereas in (S)-2•(R,R)-TADDOL, it appeared in both the pseudoequatorial and the pseudoaxial positions in four symmetrically independent molecules. Concurrent conformational changes of the TADDOL molecules were best described by the observed changes of a pseudo-torsional CO...OC angle that could be considered as a possible measure of TADDOL conformation in its receptor–ligand complexes. The structural analysis of the (R,R)-TADDOL molecule revealed that efficiency of this compound for use as an effective resolving factor comes from its ability to flexibly fit its structure to both enantiomers of a ligand molecule, producing a rare case of resolution for both pure enantiomers with one chiral separating agent. The resolved (R)-2 was used to assign the absolute configuration of a recently described (−)-1-phenylphosphin-2-en-4-one 1-sulfide by chemical correlation. In addition, an attempted stereoretentive reduction of (R)-2 by PhSiH3 at 60 °C revealed an unexpectedly low barrier for P-inversion in 1-phenylphosphin-2-en-4-one.

Abstract
X-ray crystallographic analysis of the title compounds revealed that they assume a folded helical conformation of an approximate C2 symmetry in the solid state. Dithioamide 5b, diselenoamide 5c and monoselenoamide 5d were resolved to enantiomers by inclusion crystallization with optically active diols (TADDOLs). The absolute configuration of the guest molecules in the complexes 5b·6a, 5c·6a and 5d·6a was assigned as P. The optical activity of the resolved compounds is manifested by their CD spectra showing relatively strong Cotton effects in the region of thionoamide and selenoamide n–π* transition. The optically active thiono- and selenoamides are configurationally labile compounds and gradually racemize in solution but they are stable in the form of the inclusion complexes. The first-order kinetics of the racemization in solution allowed us to assign the racemization barriers by the spectropolarimetric measurements.

Abstract
Planar chiral N,N'-dimethyldithiodianthranilide (2b) was resolved to enantiomers through a diasteromeric complex with easily accessible silver(I) (1S)-camphorosulfonate (3). The (-)-2b enantiomer was assigned the R absolute configuration from the X-ray crystal structure of the silver complex. The compound is configurationally stable and its racemization occurs through boat-to-boat ring inversion (DeltaG(double dagger) = 36.5 +/- 0.2 kcal mol(-1) at 438 K). The analysis of the CD spectrum of the title compound showed that the n-pi* Cotton effect sign is determined by the helicity of the skewed thiobenzamide chromophore. The molecules of 2b are unable to achieve efficient crystal packing by themselves and easily form inclusion complexes with toluene or pentafluorophenol.

Abstract
N-Nitroso- (5a,c) and N-nitraminotetrazoles (6a-c) were synthesized from the corresponding aminotetrazoles (3a-c) either by the direct nitration with acetic anhydride/HNO3 or by dehydration of the corresponding nitrates (4a-c) with concentrated sulfuric acid. The conversion of the N-nitrosoaminotetrazoles (5a,c) with peroxytrifluoroacetic acid (CF3CO3H) yielded the corresponding nitramines in high yield (6a (82%), 6c (80%)). The N-nitroso- (5a,c) and N-nitraminotetrazoles (6a-c) have been fully characterized by vibrational (IR, Raman) and multinuclear NMR spectroscopy (14N/15N, 1H, 13C), mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis. A detailed discussion of the 15N chemical shifts and 1H-15N coupling constants is given. The molecular structures in the solid state were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (3a,c; 5a,c; 6a-c) and a detailed discussion of the molecular structures will be presented. Furthermore, the structure and bonding as well as N,N rotational barriers are discussed on the basis of theoretically obtained data (B3LYP/6-31G(d,p), NBO analysis). In the case of two N-nitraminotetrazoles (6a,c) the physicochemical properties (e.g., D, P, delta(f)H degrees) were evaluated. The heat of formation was calculated to be positive for 6a and 6c (+2.8 and +85.2 kcal mol(-1), respectively) and the calculated detonation velocity with 5988 (6a) and 7181 (6c) m s(-1) reaches values of TNT and nitroglycerin.

Abstract
Two types of chiral Brønsted acid catalysts have been shown to catalyze regio- and enantioselective nitroso aldol synthesis between nitrosobenzene and achiral enamine. The combination of Brønsted acidity and amine moiety of enamine realizes complete regioselectivity with high enantioselectivity. After a survey of Brønsted acid catalysts, 1-naphthyl glycolic acid is found to be optimal in the O-nitroso aldol pathway, while 1-naphthyl TADDOL is the best catalyst for the N-nitroso aldol pathway. This is based on our finding on the control of regioselectivity by changing the amine moiety of enamine and the choice of Brønsted acidity.

Abstract
Nitrosobenzene or nitrosopyridine are found to be attractive electrophiles in catalytic enantioselective carbon-nitrogen and/or carbon-oxygen bond forming reactions. In the presence of designer Lewis or Brønsted acid catalysts, catalytic enantioselective O- and N-nitroso aldol reaction or nitroso Diels-Alder reaction proceed smoothly. The scope and limitation of new catalytic processes are described.

Abstract
The crystalline inclusion complexes of cholic acid with three symmetric N-aryl-N-nitrosamines were prepared, and their X-ray structures were solved. As a result of chiral conformations adopted by the enclathrated guest nitrosamines, the solid-state CD spectra were measured in KBr disks. The observed Cotton effect sign, corresponding to the n-pi* transition, was correlated with the helicity of the twisted nitrosamine chromophore conjugated with the N-aryl substituent. In addition, the absolute configuration of the enantiomorphous crystals of N-benzyl-N-nitroso-4-chloroaniline was established on the basis of the solid-state CD and X-ray crystallographic results.

Abstract
A series of substituted 2-nitrosiminobenzothiazolines (2) were synthesized by the nitrosation of the corresponding 2-iminobenzothiazolines (6). Thermal decomposition of 2a--f and of the seleno analogue 7 in methanol and of 3-methyl-2-nitrosobenzothiazoline (2a) in acetonitrile, 1,4-dioxane, and cyclohexane followed first-order kinetics. The activation parameters for thermal deazetization of 2a were measured in cyclohexane (Delta H(++) = 25.3 +/- 0.5 kcal/mol, Delta S(++) = 1.3 +/- 1.5 eu) and in methanol (Delta H(++) = 22.5 +/- 0.7 kcal/mol, Delta S(++) = -12.9 +/- 2.1 eu). These results indicate a unimolecular decomposition and are consistent with a proposed stepwise mechanism involving cyclization of the nitrosimine followed by loss of N(2). The ground-state conformations of the parent nitrosiminothiazoline (9a) and transition states for rotation around the exocyclic C==N bond, electrocyclic ring closure, and loss of N(2) were calculated using ab initio molecular orbital theory at the MP2/6-31G* level. The calculated gas-phase barrier height for the loss of N(2) from 9a (25.2 kcal/mol, MP4(SDQ, FC)/6-31G*//MP2/6-31G* + ZPE) compares favorably with the experimental barrier for 2a of 25.3 kcal/mol in cyclohexane. The potential energy surface is unusual; the rotational transition state 9a-rot-ts connects directly to the orthogonal transition state for ring-closure 9aTS. The decoupling of rotational and pseudopericyclic bond-forming transition states is contrasted with the single pericyclic transition state (15TS) for the electrocyclic ring-opening of oxetene (15) to acrolein (16). For comparison, the calculated homolytic strength of the N--NO bond is 40.0 kcal/mol (MP4(SDQ, FC)/6-31G*//MP2/6-31G* + ZPE).
