Abstract
Here we describe the use of the hexadehydro-Diels-Alder (HDDA) reaction for the de novo construction of the isoindolinone scaffold and its application to the synthesis of the title natural products. The key isoindolinone-forming HDDA reaction involved an unprecedented substrate motif in which an amide carbonyl group was conjugated to the 4π 1,3-diyne component. In addition, a dimethylsilyl (-SiMe2H) substituent was exploited to trigger a Fleming-Tamao-Kumada oxidation for the installation of an essential phenolic hydroxyl group.

Abstract
The synthesis of C3-substituted isoindolin-1-ones from oxazolines and cyclopropanols has been achieved with oxazoline as a bifunctional nucleophilic directing group. The reaction proceeds by the cleavage of three chemical bonds and allows the formation of three new chemical bonds, a C-N bond, a C-C bond, and a C-O bond, in a single step.

Abstract
Various N-substituted benzisoselenazol-3(2H)-ones and their non-selenium-containing analogues have been synthesized and tested against selected viruses (HHV-1, EMCV and VSV) to determine the extent to which selenium plays a role in antiviral activity. The data presented here show that the presence of selenium is crucial for the antiviral properties of benzisoselenazol-3(2H)-ones since their isostructural analogues having different groups but lacking selenium either did not show any antiviral activity or their activity was substantially lower. The open-chain analogues of benzisoselenazol-3(2H)-ones--diselenides also exhibited high antiviral activity while selenides and disulfides were completely inactive towards model viruses.

Abstract
A concise and efficient total synthesis of alkaloid narceine imide is disclosed. The key steps are based upon the sequential construction of the isoindolinone template followed by metalation and coupling with an isoquinolinium salt. Subsequent E1cb elimination enables the creation of the arylmethylene unit with the concomitant formation of the dimethylaminoethyl chain and ultimate deprotection completes the synthesis of the natural product.

Abstract
We herein describe a novel palladium catalysed three-component cascade process involving carbonylation of an aryl iodide to generate an acyl palladium(II) species that is intercepted by a primary aliphatic or aromatic amine, amide, or sulfonamide followed by intramolecular Michael addition to furnish N-substituted isoindolinones in good yield. Overall, the cascade results in the formation of one CC and two CN bonds, one ring and one stereocentre.Key words: isoindolinone, palladium, cascade, amidation, sulfonamidation.

Abstract
An unusual reductive ring-opening reaction in the title compounds, of the phthalimide group with sodium hydride in anhydrous DMF is observed for the first time and the presumed mechanism is described in detail. An unexpected hydrogenation of the phthalimide group was also observed.

Abstract
Cyclization under both radical and carbanionic conditions of N-substituted 3-phenylsulfanylisoindolin-1-one 14 containing a chiral N-tether incorporating an enoate ester as the acceptor leads to tetrahydropyrido[2,1-a]isoindolones stereoselectively. The major product 17 from carbanionic cyclization was stereoselectively desulfurized with nickel boride allowing correlation of cyclization products from both methodologies. The cyclization stereoselectivities have been rationalised using a transition-state model in which the acceptor grouping adopts a pseudoaxial configuration. This contrasts with other 6-exo-trig processes in which a pseudoequatorial configuration is normally adopted, and has been attributed to the steric influence imposed by the bulky tert-butyldiphenylsilyloxy chiral auxiliary allylic to the enoate ester. The product stereochemistries provide models for the required cis-stereochemistry of the D/E ring fusion of the Tacaman alkaloid skeleton via the relatively unexplored C-3-C-14 bond disconnection.
